As the nationwide debate over U.S. judicial nominations continues, members of the Hip-Hop generation and civil rights veterans are convening Tuesday (May 17) at the Hip-Hop for Justice Press Conference in Washington, D.C. to speak out on the issue.
Over the past weeks, Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. Senate have disputed upcoming judicial appointments and the use of filibusters, a rule that blocks or delays Senate action on a bill.
The Hip-Hop Caucus and Jeff Johnson, also known as Cousin Jeff from BET’s “Cousin Jeff Chronicles” will voice their concerns by supporting the filibuster at a press conference held in the U.S. Capitol, HC-9 at 10:30 a.m.
While Republican leaders have threatened a rule change to prohibit the filibusters, Democrats have worked to prevent what they view as a possible Republican take-over in the judicial arena by attempting to prevent President George Bush’s judicial nominations.
Along with members of the Congressional Black Caucus and People for the American Way, the Hip-Hop Caucus will outline the importance of the filibuster and the federal judges in defending social justice.
The Hip-Hop Caucus also plans to assemble youth leaders and announce a long-term endeavor to make sure young people understand the significance of the judicial process.
Using filibusters, Democrats have already blocked 10 of Bush’s appellate court selections. The move required that those nominees obtain 60 votes in the 100-member Senate instead of the majority required for Senate confirmation, which none of the nominees could pass.
Speakers at the press conference include Rev. Lenox Yearwood and Representatives Linda Sanchez (D-OH), and Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH).
Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’ Citizen Change, Rock the Vote, and League of Pissed off Voters are among the participating organizations.
