Afeni Shakur and the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation (TASF) have confirmed dates for the 8th presentation of the Shoulders of Giants, a show based on works from the spoken word album, The Rose That Grew From Concrete.
The Rose… features Mos Def, Russell Simmons, Q-Tip, Mos Def, Danny Glover and Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur contributing performances of the late rapper’s poetry and was released in 2000.
Held at Georgia State University’s Rialto Center for Performing Arts in Atlanta, the annual show serves as a reminder of the impact the TASF Performing Arts camp has had on its 12-18 year-old attendants.
The camp students are set to display various art forms including poetry and dance as they perform signature pieces during the show.
The program centers around material used from The Rose That Grew From Concrete, which serves as the basis for the students’ presentations.
Over the years, TASF Camp students have performed at venues as varied as the Source Awards Community Service Awards in Miami, the Georgia State Conference of NAACP Freedom Fund Gala and on television on Good Day Atlanta.
Students who attend the TASF camp are driven to strive and enhance their various creative talents while also cultivating life skills in preparation for living a successful, enriched life.
Skills emphasized include everything from discipline and goal setting to teamwork, self-expression and volunteering.
Graduates are also encouraged to return to the camp and share their experiences with incoming students.
The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation was founded by Afeni Shakur in 1997, with the mission of training and supporting students who aspire to enhance their creative talents.
The Shoulders of Giants will be held on July 29 at 7:00pm and is open to the public with tickets available at the TASCA Visitor Center at 5616 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain, GA.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students under 18 and Senior Citizens.
Proceeds from the play will go towards the continued development of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts.
