A man that provided high level security services to celebrities like Sean “Diddy” Combs and Hillary Duff has been sentenced to prison for identity theft, after years of living and working under an assumed identity.
According to The Miami Herald, Combs bodyguard Robert A. Morillo was sentenced Friday (June 15) in federal court to two years in prison for aggravated identity theft.
The conviction marks the end of a long history of identity theft for the 40-year-old West Miami-Dade man.
In 1990, Morillo took on the identity of another man to obtain a state license to become a bodyguard, after he was busted for carrying a concealed firearm.
The license provided a way for the Puerto Rico native to get jobs protecting various clients, including a member of the Saudi royal family and a diplomat with the Jamaican Parliament.
Using the experiences from those jobs, Morillo ended up doing security consulting for Combs as well as traveling to Los Angeles to work as a bodyguard for teen pop singer/actress Hilary Duff from 2004 to 2005.
Despite his lucrative positions, Morillo was eventually exposed.
According to the Herald, in 2006, the Diplomatic Security Service said it uncovered evidence that Morillo assumed another person’s identity almost a decade ago and obtained a U.S. passport in the name of co-worker Richard Joseph Rodriguez, another Miami-Dade resident.
With the passport, Morillo was able to get a state license to carry a firearm and work as a bodyguard to provide dignitary protection services to celebrities and international figures, according to the State Department.
Morillo evaded capture by assuming another identity and fleeing to Puerto Rico.
He was captured in December 2006.
