Rap star Remy Ma plans to appeal the jurys guilty verdict that was reached yesterday (March 27) in her trial for assault and weapons charges.
Remy Ma attorney Ivan Fischer has revealed that he is planning to appeal the Manhattan Supreme Court grand jurys decision.
A jury convicted Remy Ma on four counts on two counts of first-degree assault, attempted coercion and criminal possession of a weapon.
During the trial, the rappers lawyer insisted that Remy Ma accidentally shot Makeda Barnes-Joseph in her car, after a night of partying in Manhattans Meatpacking District in July of 2007.
Remy Ma accused Barnes-Joseph of stealing $3,000 from her purse.
Remy Ma followed Barnes-Joseph to her car The two women argued inside of the car and according to testimony, struggled over the purse.
Barnes-Joseph was subsequently shot in the tussle over the purse.
During his closing statements, Fischer maintained that the shooting was an accident, a fact that was supported by Barnes-Josephs own testimony.
Prosecutors maintained that Remy Mas shooting was the result of the rapper’s decision to take “an illegal .45-caliber automatic and [load] it with hollow-point bullets and go into Ms. Josephs car.”
Remy Ma, born Remy Smith, faces 25 years in prison. She will be held in prison until her sentencing day next month.
