The UniverSoul Circus will continue its tradition of honoring outstanding leaders in the communities it visits, by celebrating Grammy Award winning rapper/actor LL Cool J and New York Senator Malcolm A. Smith during the Circus’ run in the New York/New Jersey area.
The two founders of the “Jump and Ball Tournament,” held every summer in Queens, will be honored during a special ceremony at Roy Wilkins Park on Saturday (April 19) during the show at 4:30pm.
“It is truly a privilege to be recognized by UniverSoul Circus,” said Senator Smith. “I am especially pleased to share this honor with someone that I not only consider a friend, but one who recognizes the need to give back as I do.
“UniverSoul is one of incredible creativity and brings amusement to families across the country,” continued the Senator. “I am delighted that they have once again brought their world-renowned production to Southeast Queens.”
Senator Smith and LL Cool J, both born and raised in Queens, launched the “Jump and Ball Tournament” in 2005, a teen basketball and Double Dutch competition held every summer in Queens.
The Tournament is just one of many community initiatives at least partially sponsored by the Senator, who has remained committed to sustaining family-oriented projects in various areas.
“It is extremely important for us at the UniverSoul Circus to recognize these two individuals who have taken the time to give back to their community despite their status,” said UniverSoul Circus CEO Cedric Walker.
The UniverSoul Circus is introducing an all-new production this year, “Jabulani: Joy, Happiness & Laughter.”
The production is a collection of exhilarating multicultural and international acts incorporating Hip-Hop, R&B, Funk and Gospel, including a three-man comedy trapeze troupe from South Africa and two Guinean child contortionists.
The Circus will complete its stop in Queens on April 27, continuing on to the Bronx on April 29-May 4 and Newark on May 6-May 11.
