Bay Area rap stars Too $hort, E-40 and MC Hammer have been tapped to serve as consultants on the upcoming docu-drama film, Weight.
Weight is based on the life story of one of Oaklands youngest drug kingpins, Darryl Lil D Reed, who took control of the local drug trade after the incarceration of Felix “The Cat” Mitchell.
The flick is executive produced by Todd Hollywood G. Graham, who said the rappers have been utilized to keep the authenticity of the project.
Lil D, who was featured on an episode of BETs American Gangster series, is infamous for his role in controlling the Oakland drug market in the last 1980s.
By the time he was 18, he was making millions of dollars, but by the time he was 21, he was facing a lengthy prison sentence on federal drug dealing charges.
Lil D was eventually sentenced to 35 years in prison under mandatory minimum federal guidelines and he is currently still incarcerated, having served 20.
While the movie has yet to find a director, casting is currently underway.
Representatives for the project told AllHipHop.com that Weight is due for a theatrical release in Spring/Summer of 2010.
