Fresh off the heels of receiving the Vanguard Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), Janelle Monae has released a new remix video for “Tightrope,” which served as the lead single for The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III). The official “Wondamix” features all-new versus from Janelle Monae, as well as her Atlantic label mates, B.o.B and Lupe Fiasco. Shortly after the video’s release, Clayton Perry managed to catch-up with B.o.B. and Lupe Fiasco, in order to comment and reflect on the artistry of Janelle Monae. AllHipHop.com: What do you admire the most about the music and/or character of Janelle Monae? B.o.B: What I admire most about Janelle Monae’s music is the sincerity and uniqueness that she brings to the music. Lupe Fiasco: I admire Janelle Monae’s fearlessness more than anything. The bravery to do things right and with care but at the same time wrapped in style and grace is definitely lacking in today’s popular culture and Janelle Monae possesses it, this bravery, in abundance. AllHipHop.com: What immediate reaction(s) do you have to her recent receipt of ASCAP’s Vanguard Award? Lupe Fiasco: I think its well-deserved and utterly appropriate. B.o.B: [I] feel very proud, proud for music. Proud that she is receiving the credit she deserves. AllHipHop.com: Janelle Monae is… [open-ended question] Lupe Fiasco: Janelle Monae is a rare phenomenon that exudes all those attributes that demand not only respect but reverence as well. An entertainer’s entertainer. B.o.B: Janelle Monae is proof for women that you can make it in the industry if you have good music. AllHipHop.com: Beyond “Tightrope,” what is your favorite track on The ArchAndroid? Why? B.o.B: My favorite track on ArchAndroid is “Cold War.” Shows passion….and I love passion. Gives me chills.
