position.
Michael
Jackson’s first (and sure not to be last) posthumous album, Michael, enters the charts at number
three selling 224,910 copies.
A couple of
weeks ago R. Kelly appeared at the Soul Train awards alongside Ronald Isely and
received a standing ovation proving what Michael Vick, Kanye West and Robert
Downey Jr. know all too well…Success will make the public forget why they didn’t like you. This theory works for all celebrities…except
maybe Mel Gibson. R. Kelly’s Love Letter
enters the charts at number 6 selling 150,405.
That means
the number one album in Hip Hop is none other than Pink Friday. The debut album by Nicki Minaj falls one spot
but still holds the number seven position.
This week the Jamaica Queens artist sells 98,458 copies bringing her
totals to 656,520.
She is followed
by the P.Diddy helmed group Diddy Dirty Money.
(Did he have to put Diddy in front of it? Really? Did anyone out there not know that this was a
Puffy project? I’m going to keep asking
this until someone tells me.) This week
the group sells 87,380 copies and holds the number 10 spot.
That means
the only Hip Hop albums in the top 10 are Nicki Minaj and Diddy Dirty
Money. Erykah Badu might be right…maybe
Hip-Hop is turning into “pop-techno cornball-ass music.”
And keeping
in that same musical vein is our next guests.
In the Maybe-I-Spoke-To-Soon category are the Black Eyed Peas. Last week they fell to number 19 leading me
to say this:
Is the public’s
musical taste getting better? Is this “the beginning” of the end for bad music
(bad pun intended)?
Well apparently
the public had me fooled. The Black Eyed
Peas jump from number 19 to number 11 by selling 82,973 copies of their latest
album The Beginning. To date the group has sold 256,149 of
their sixth studio album.
Eminem’s Recovery jumps up 5 spots to land at
number 19. This week the Detroit rapper’s
seventh studio album moves 69,233 copies this week. I would tell you about the album’s total
sales but I stopped counting when he crossed the triple platinum mark.
The next
two albums took a serious dip on the charts this week. T.I’s No
Mercy
falls from 4 to 23 while Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy drops from 13 to 25. I kind of expected that from the T.I. albumbut I am a little surprised by Kanye. No
Mercy moves 64,317 copies bringing its totals sales to 220,120 while West’s
MBDTF sells 62,010. That means the
Chicago emcee has sold 732,760 copies to date.
Lil Wayne’s
I Am Not A Human Being EP is the last record on the countdown, landing at number
48. This week the EP moves 31,009 copies
adding to its 596,266 total.
Dropping This Week
At this
point some of you (myself included) have not even attempted to do any Christmas
shopping. Maybe you should brighten up
the day of that Hip Hop fan in your life and pick up an album.
The first
album up is well worth mentioning. David
Banner and 9th Wonder’s collaboration Death of a Pop Star has been
talked about for months and is finally being released this week. The duo joins forces with Channel 3,
Ludacris, Anthony Hamilton, Marz, Lisa Ivey and Erykah Badu to create the nine
track album. 9th Wonder has
produced some great albums, especially when he teams up with artists like Murs,
Jean Grae, and Sean Price. Hopefully
this effort will be no different.
Next up is
Ghostface Killah, often called the most consistent member of Wu-Tang. Think about it….has Ghostface put out a bad
album? I mean, he may put out an album
that you don’t think is a as good as another but has he ever put out a garbage
album? That type of consistency is probably why he can drop an album with little
to no promotion. (I don’t know if this is Ghost’s fault or Def Jam’s but can we
get a video? Is there a video?) This week GFK drops his ninth studio album Apollo Kids. This album is supposed to be a return to his
Wu Tang sound which should relieve fans that weren’t feeling the R&B driven
Ghostdini: Wizard of Poetry in Emerald
City (I know what you’re thinking.
That album wasn’t garbage…it was different. He told you it was R&B so you should have
known what you were getting into). Apollo Kids features Killah Priest, GZA,
Busta Rhymes, Cappadonna, Trife Diesel, Joell Ortiz, The Game, Black Thought,
Jim Jones, Shawn Wiggs, Sheek Louch, Sun God, Raekwon, U-God, Redman and Method
Man.
