AllHipHop.com Catches Up With Chris Webby Backstage At His NYC Show

Connecticut native and AllHipHop.com Breeding Ground artist Chris Webby closed out 2011 with a bang at one of New York City’s most famous venues, Irving Plaza, where AllHipHop.com had an all-access pass to his sold-out show.

Webby is no stranger to selling out shows in NYC, as his rabid fan base has been packing venues like Webster Hall, Highline Ballroom, and now Irving Plaza for over two years.

AllHipHop.com caught up with Webby in his dressing room before he hit the stage to perform an hour-and-a-half set packed with tracks that spanned a majority of his projects. Fan favorite’s like “Webster’s Lab,” “Bounce,” “Off the Chain,” and “Skyline” are just a few of the over 15 songs Webby performed that night.

Backstage, we talked about his newly released project There Goes the Neighborhood, his favorite album of 2011, what he plans to purchase with his first check, and where he’s headed in 2012.

Dude can spit….If I was a young white guy, I would rap too. It’s a largely untapped world with one white guy (EM) at the top of the HIP-HOP sales world and not too far from having the most overall appeal. I’m personally waiting on a totally hot EM album/cd. So Em gets no top 5 or 10 status from me.  Don’t feel bad folks JAY ain’t in my top 5 either. HIP HOP ain’t young enough for me to see either artist in that light and there are too many ill MC’s before them period. It’s this premature rush to add someone as the greatest or top 5 that has most rappers sounding alike because this generation thinks HIP-HOP music started with TUPAC & BIGGIE then JAY-Z? SAD….Back to Chris Webby…again dude sounds nice but I need to know your rapper appeal is not orchestrated politics in other words…white handed to him. I know in some ways he can’t help his skin color. But prefabricated rapper spells HIP-POP not HIP-HOP there is a difference.

I wanna see a white rapper like some white actors and comedians who keep it totally real and speak to their  racist world history not on some guilt shit but being  frank, just admit as a white rapper or MC that yall got some shit with yall and don’t be afraid or sensitive to saying the N-word if your need to express a topic or feeling that includes that phrase. I commend EM for dodging the term, shit is amazing considering EM’s word play. EM’s career is on auto-pilot as he has long been an artist with global appeal. Another hot rapper can’t just be another EM clone be it his rap style or in his or her striving for success. Give me another angle that will set him or her apart from a largely entitled white person infatuated with the black urban music and getting instant record sales (politics) which saddly we the fans use as a gauge to determine who’s the best black or white.

See my point on entitlement and or political tolerance or acceptance. If a black mc or rapper performed the song and EM & RIHANNA’s multi-platinum hit single “I LOVE THE WAY YOU LIE” The song would have been viewed as offensive and criminal (See Akineyle’s 1993 song on the cd Vagina Diner “I LUH HER” Which lead to the cd being shelved not long after it’s release). The lyrics in EM’s song clearly supported an abusive couples need to inflict bodily harm on each other (domestic violence). With lines that suggested he would set his mate on fire and physically detain his mate against her will. Yeah this song would have been canned from the rip if a black artist had recorded this song, yet the media totally looked the other way for EM post Chris Brown’s felony assault conviction. Instead this single was pushed 5 times platinum……SAD…totally green lighting domestic violence.
