Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Rick Ross Steal Waka Flocka Flame's Style? Waka Thinks So!

Bricksquad’s Waka Flocka Flame has taken a few shots at Rick Ross in a cover-story for Complex. In the article, Waka accuses Ricky Rozay of stealing his style and making a career out of it. Check out what he said below:

“This n*gga out here making 30 f*cking songs with your sound. He watering it down, just putting words together that sounded good. Sh*t would be harder if it was the truth.

“That sh*t made me tight. “N*ggas built labels off our sound—like, literally. You know how many n*ggas sound like Lex Luger and Southside? I go in n*ggas’ studios, all their beats sound like my producers. I be like, What the f*ck?” But above all he tries to maintain perspective: “You can’t be mad at something you can’t control.”

Waka also takes credit for creating the term “H.A.M.” and implies that the Watch The Throne single “H.A.M.”, which was produced by Lex Luger, was very similar to his signature sound. Check out what he said below:

“What are y’all gonna say now? Jay-Z stupid as h*ll? My sound is wack? You gonna say that? They love the sound. They can’t run away from it. That sh*t re-sparked n*ggas’ careers.

“My sound put life into a lot of people’s careers. I feel like my sound changed hip-hop. Period. It’s crazy when I came out with it everybody laughed at it, but the next year everybody’s doing it. They getting credit for the sh*t you started. You be like, Damn, how is this n*gga a genius for doing something I started?”

I guess “BMF” does sound a little like it could be a Waka song, but it was produced by Lex Luger. If anything that’s Lex Luger’s sound, and he is free to give it to whomever he wants. Right?

  • BUT they sound NOTHING alike!!!!! and Rick Ross has been out since the early  2000’s, Waka is still a newbie!!

    • True but listen to more recent stuff before you decide. Waka might have a point. maybe.

    • Nemesis_Enforcer

Waka is talking about the music. The beats.  He didn’t say “style” as in rap. SIdney Lace said style.  Huge difference between style and sound.  As far as sound, Waka is right.

  • bigdoe6

I hate to say this but Waka is telling the God honest truth, every dude that’s making beats sound like Lex, and Southside. Truth be told. It was a time when producers had their own sound but niggas is cloning like crazy. I have to agree with Waka on this one.

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

       following success lol 😉

    • RIGCH_THA_GREAT

      my beats dont soundcloudcom/rigchisproductions

  • So rappers are taking credit for producer’s sounds now? This dude is ill in the head. Artists wanted Lex Luger’s sound! The same way producers started speeding up soul samples like Kanye did and Rappers were making songs on those style of beats! This dude is tripping! Lex Luger got paid for his sound and any rapper can get that sound if they pay for it!

    • bigdoe6

Lex Luger and Southside are music producers that have a production deal under his Brick Squad label. Waka signed them as in house producers. So at the end of the day Waka can take some credit.

      • Weedras

he aint making no beats, he composing no sound… dame and Jay can’t take credit for Kanye’s or just blaze’s production because they were in house producers…. nor can DMX take credit from Swizz…

      • Nemesis_Enforcer

Not true.  If you have a label or production situation, the OWNER of the company can and does claim it as his own.  There was a such thing as “The Motown sound” and the only thing musical that Gordy was touching was Diana Ross.  But people still call it the Motown sound.

Did he create the tracks? No. Did he put these guys on to taylor make a sound for him? Yes.  He should have done what Drake did with 40, discourage (but not forbid) them from working with other artists until he was fully established.  As a reward, 40 did 90% of Drake’s album, in comparison to Boi1da (who sold more music outside of Drake) doing 1 song.

Waka got paid for it though.  Yo know him and his mom owns their publishing lol.

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

he picked the beats tho …. if you listen to lex youtubes if you ask me he doesnt want to even make those kind of beats … he had a youtube saying that he hates when people call him and ask them to do the same beat over …..

      •  Yeah I remember seein that vid too…but at the end of the day it should be on Lex as a producer to have the integrity to say “Hell nah I ain’t doin that shit no more, I’m more than just this one sound”.  Yeah I know, he gotta eat and they’re payin, I’ve heard it all before.  But at what point does one put the money to the side for a second and start havin some standards about themselves?  If they just did that the game wouldn’t be half as stale as it’s been.

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

but they didnt really asking for Lex beat until after the success of OH LETS DO IT and HARD IN THE PAINT … had waka didnt drop those joints would BMF exist ????? 😉

      • I see your point, but Ross was making noise before BMF. Music production is an artform, I can’t see a rapper taking credit for a producer’s sound. DJ Premier laced many rappers’ projects but Jay-Z or Nas can’t say rappers stole their styles cuz they worked with Preemo.

  • “It’s crazy when I came out with it everybody laughed at it, but the next year everybody’s doing it.”
nah, niggaz was laughing at how simple this nigga flow was………had nothing to do with the PRODUCTION, shit, if it wasnt for the PRODUCTION who would wanna listen to waka?

  • That’s like saying Jay-Z stole the Clipse sound, and the Clipse stole Nore’s sound, and Nore stole Fabolous sound just because they all had Neptunes-produced hits at some point. GTFOH, Waka.

    • David Gonz

JAY Z DID STEAL THE CLPSE SOUND. HE STOLE PAC SOUND. BIGGIE SOUND. COME TOI THIINK OF IT THE NIGGA JUST STEAL SOUNDS

      • Weedras

smh… ignorance personified…. last i checked hip hop is a genre, a culture where   artists influence, motivate and compete against each other… what ya’ll call stealing is influence.. i never heard old school rapper accusing each other of stealing trivial shit… smh…

      • Nemesis_Enforcer

You sound like one of these clowns that endorse biting in the name of “influence”.  Nah dude it’s BITING and old skool rappers went to war with each other over it.

      • Weedras

there is a difference fool…. everything nowadays to you “clowns” is deemed as biting… this instance isn’t biting nor is many of the ‘famous’ references such as the dumb one used above…

      • No, he didn’t steal Miley ray Cirus’ sound, or Brittaney Spears, but everybody else….uhmmm , yeah!

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

cosign and nore has let it be known HE SHOWED EVERYONE HOW TO RAP ON A NEPTUNES BEAT lol 😉

      • ReadMore82

        Stop it.

  • all lex luger shit sound alike….he aint a genius…where tf is premo when you need em

  • If anything Lex and Southside made Waka truth be told. Like a lot of rap niggas the producers are the reason why niggas are eating because a lot of nigga PIN GAME’S are lacking. you can put a bird pissing over Lex beats and niggas would say it was hot because of the production. I like waka’s music for what it is crunk club music period. triple 6 was putting out the same kind of music way before waka ever got stated you don’t hear them crying about him, Lex or Southside stilling there style, nor do you hear lil Jon, pastor Troy and the list goes on and on of dudes that were the orignators of the crunk sound put him on blast. H.A.M sounds nothing like any beat the Lex has produced for waka lets be real could anybody have heard waka rapping over that beat. you can’t because that it was too complex for for his style of rap to catch. B.M.F does sound like a beat wacka would usually rap on and killed and had niggas going crazy over at the club but I thought is was one of Ross worst songs even thou it did get alot of love. I don’t think it would’ve made the cut on the “Deeper then Rap” or “Port of Mia” CD. Lex and Southside should be the once mad that waka is taking sole credit for the movement.

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

very true def … but he is currently the only guy kind of providing that energy right now … def not a pioneer of it ….. but he brought it back into mainstream

  • CanYouAllHearMe

OF COURSE HE DID GO AND LISTEN TO ANY NEW MUSIC FROM MMG AND YOU WILL HEAR THE LEX LUGER SOUND

    MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  • Nobody stole waka’s sound. It’s called being a producer. when you buy beats you buy a sound, and certain producers have certain sounds.

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

certain artist have a “sound” too … however shawty red and jeezy should get credit for that trap music sound …. i believe im not a south dude so it might go deeper than them …….. but i kind of agree with waka …. its cool to get lex to produce your single with that sound … but when you droppping albums full of that sound … now your making an statement …. MMG Self Made got that lex sound all over it and from what i can remember correct me if im wrong .. he didnt produce one track on that album ?????

      • ReadMore82

Yeah he did produce just one. #8 “That Way” feat. Jeremih. Doesn’t sound like his usual production though (sounds much better).

  • Weedras

funny thing the title of the article says “style” but the article itself is refering to musical sound… Waka aint not producer what is he talking about… let Lex luger do the talking and and shut up! as  matter of fact how about u come up with a proper flow while your at it…

  • Well, that was because in the old school, your $hyt had to be original. You couldn’t steal anyone’s name of beat, etc. & expect to get away with it.

Youtube MC Lyte ” Beat Biter” dissing Antionette’s ” I got an attitude “.

” Your a beat BITER, dope style taker, Tell you to your face, you ain’t nothing but a faker!”

    • Jas1ne

That’s 10% dis. Dope song, Lyte dont play!

  • True!  To steal Waka’s sound, an MC would have to rap, while chewing a box of crayons!

    • EL_BARK

      Cites
      Isk for this post.
      Lmao

  • Jas1ne

Overall Officer Thick False and Wacka Wacka are both garbage!

  • Raphop71

The Honest Truth is everyone wanna sound like the South PERIOD. That’s all one can infer after listening to the culture, lingo and influence of Hip Hop being oversaturated by the Southeast for so long. It’s true, a lot of style and vocab in the game now originated in ATL and all over the South and big artists like Waka, Gucci, etc have been biten for years. Just respect what the South has done for the game, and stop stealing and denying. By the way, Miami is still the South long as Trick Daddy from there.

    • thuglifefukdapolice

  • Nemesis_Enforcer

Folks are missing the point. At least Waka is calling out the biters. It’s been going on too long in rap, making it all sound uninspiring (unless Im bout to ride on someone).  They call it trap music but there is no soundtrack to selling drugs.  And most of these dudes are lying anyway.  No one who makes REAL money selling (I mean trapping) does what these clowns talk about. You ain’t cutting up or weighing no dope if you are a BOSS!  You don’t even touch the stuff.  You ain’t on the block. Thats entry level.  You make the deals and let the do-boys do the dirt, stand outside in the cold, rain, etc. So most of these rappers talk about the lifestyle of a do-boy. They are the first to get shot when they are short lol. You let them put themselves in position to get caught while you LIVE THE LIFE!  But since they dudes are so busy lying, they don’t even know they are playing themselves (and most of you don’t either). Get out of here with that.

I personally would like to see Luger and Southside do an article like this.  Producers have been jacking their sound ever since BMF.  Some are even more established and they reached back and grabbed a hi hat or synth here or there.  It’s a shame that in 2012, rap music has come to this. It’s like no shame. If you do something different and it becomes a hit, get ready because all these “beat makers” are going to emulate it.

    • Thank you for your detailed history on drug dealing, but that ish is irrelevant to this current discussion. You must have just started listening to hip-hop in 2011. How can you give credit to Lex Luger without giving Shawty Redd and D. Rich their just due? Go back and listen to Jeezy’s TM101. Hell, Manny Fresh and Beats By the Pound were doin’ it loooooong before them. What about Atlanta, Memphis, and Miami? SMH.

      • Nemesis_Enforcer

No YOU go back and listen to all of those dudes that you listed and you’ll realize what I’m taking about. 808 aint new.  South beats ain’t new.  But no one can deny that Lex Luger started those super fast hi hats that everyone started biting. You thought you had a good point or something?  Niggas

      • FOH. Manny Fresh birthed ALL these dudes. Cut it out, bruh.

  • Waka is starting to realize that he’s gettin’ washed up so now he wants to take shots at people who are bigger than him.
Sad mo’fucka, he’s wack as hell anyway.

  • Southcidal

I didn’t know Waka made beats. This dude need to worry about them shiity azz bars. Niggaz be having diarreah at the mouth I tell ya. Stealing his sound? This “sound” that he speak of is nothing new. Running high hats and snares on top of a 808 kick is new? GTFOH? Manny Fresh was doing those type of beats in 88.

    • Pretty much. Put on an old Cash Money CD and you can hear all that stuff these dudes are doin’ today, and Manny gets no credit for it.

  • thuglifefukdapolice

HIP HOP OFFICIALL DEAD WAKA SAYIN HE A ORIGINAL OVER BEATS

  • brotha_man

IDK some of Rick ross stuff do sound waka flocka’ish. with that being said the both garbage rappers….Also aint waka from N.Y so he is technically biting the south

  • Flocka is HOT GARBAGE!!! He gonna say people steal “his” sound but all he talking about is “Lex Luger’s” beats.. How does having good producers make somebody a good rapper? And if you dont contribute to producing anything but the lyrics (which is ALWAYS the worst part of the song) its not “your” sound to claim.. When you can tell me all the rappers who after hearing Flocka, who then no longer have rhythm or bars then I will be convinced that they stole his sound.. FOH..

  • atlantahiphopshop

NIGGA YOU AND  LEX LUGER ADOPTED THAT WHOLE SWAG FROM ATLANTA, EVERYBODY BEEN DOING THAT SWAG IN ATLANTA SINCE FOREVER WITH A NATURAL ORIGIN BASED ON TRIPLE SIX MAFIA, GHETTOBOYS ETC. • Thank you, sir. Someone knows their history around here. Cats in the South were rappin’ over beats like that when Waka was still livin’ in Queens. Now these dudes actin’ like nobody knew what an 808 drum was before they came into the game. SMH.

  • But see Ross CAN rap and thatz the difference
