Diddy and Quincy Jones

Hip-Hop Rumors: Quincy Jones Calls Diddy Musically Illiterate

Legendary producer Quincy Jones wants Diddy to learn his craft. During the launching of Spotify’s new app yesterday, Jones told Bruno Mars that, “P. Diddy wouldn’t know a B-flat if it hit him.“ Coming from one of the most respected producers in history, that’s got to hurt!

Jones, who has worked with everyone from Michael Jackson to Ray Charles, went on to say, “P. Diddy has a doctorate in marketing…. He’s got clothes companies and Ciroc vodka.”

It’s obvious Jones has no love for Combs.

Although Quincy Jones was just speaking the truth, Diddy can’t read music like him, but he makes hits – point blank, period.

  • scullyson

LOL..Somebody sounds salty, foreal…hmm…Tell us why you mad Quinc….Wasnt Pac engaged to Quincy Daughter B4 he passed?…

    • q jones salty the man produced off the wall and most thriller the BEST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL TIME damn yall niggas on here got no respect lol

      • immackulate

just cuz he produced THRILLER dont mean he cant be salty
its typical for old heads to be a little salty when the pendulum swings
and the game changes – MJ hates KOBE comparisons just like
QUINCY hates PUFFY comparisons (understand both arguments)
but PUFF is like the modern day QUINCY as KOBE is to MJ (you could throw lebron in the argument if he gets about 4-5 more rings) –
once we old they gonna compare the NEW NIGGA to PUFF/KOBE
and them niggahs aint gonna like it one bit (either)

    • Nemesis_Enforcer

How is Quincy mad? Dude has made some of the greatest music from scratch. He is the one that people sample. Why would he be mad?  Why is it that when someone tells an inconvenient truth these days, they are mad or hating?

    • immackulate

and PAC said some disparaging things about QUINCY at the same damn time too

      • scullyson

Oh word? I didnt know that….LOL@ ” at the same damn time” phrase….Thats F’ed up….

  • Diddy = Barry Gordy not Quincy Jones.  Diddy doesn’t make hits.  In all his reality shows have you ever seen DIDDY MAKE A HIT. NO. Just cause he has producer credits doesn’t mean he made the beat.  He’s like Barry Gordy. In fact Barry Gordy had more musical talent and Diddy is the better business man.

    • thaGOD83

UNFAIR comparison, diddy has a good ear, had a good production team, without them is only the ego left, barry never danced, was in a groupm nor had a solo album, cant compare diddy to a dude that had gamble and huff, smokey writing songs, stevie wonder, rick james, ross, ooops and the jacksons etc….not even fair to barry, puff had 92-2001 in music but that is gone, barry never tried to be famous for being an act, and THAT made him one of the most successful in music history, puff is one that came and went…sorry but thats the truth

    • Wrong again Berry Gordy wrote songs and plyed piano.

      • immackulate

you the damn “CLEAN UP MAN” lol

        CHECK MATE again

  • S

How many times are ya’ll going to bring this up? Rumors must be really slow today

    • S

Oh! My bad ya’ll just late with this story…….

  • OaklandOxymoron

Its proven that musical literacy isn’t necessary to create music in this day and age. Quincy Jones sounds bitter or something…

    • bitter really???

      • OaklandOxymoron

Yeah. He seems to go out of his way to point out that a lot of producers, or even music execs, aren’t musically trained. Almost like he discredits what they’re doing because he feels they cant transcribe music. I feel him on the non musician argument not the discrediting tho

      •  Bitter over what exactly?lol he is worth 300 million and produced the biggest album in history and collects royalties while he is in bed, just on sanford and son alone he makes millions .lol

      • OaklandOxymoron

He’s made plenty of comments about so called producers making fortunes off of making music but not being trained musicians. I’d say he’s bitter about the perceived easy path that these so called producers have to millions. He always talks about how hard he and other musicians had it. 300 million, $3, he still openly criticizes today’s producers. Just my observation tho… Oh, lol

      • Nemesis_Enforcer

But he is right.  What negative or untrue thing has he mentioned?  I see basketball commentators and players say the same thing all day long. “Player needs to develop a consistent jumper. Needs to work on foul shots.  Needs to learn fundamentals”.  It’s just Quincy’s opinion.  But he has nothing to be bitter about. This is music.  It could only make Puff better and help him EARN that producer credit.

      • OaklandOxymoron

I feel he’s correct in his stance on musicianship as it pertains to producing also. It just doesn’t translate to hip hop producers in my opinion. I always have agreed with him on his stance on composers vs new age producers. I just never understood his singling out of certain ones, especially Diddy because that dude never said he was a great producer lol. I never perceived his statements as negative. Just misplaced sometimes.

      • Thats probably a different argument though. In basketball you can’t necessarily be a great player if your free throw game or basic fundamentals are weak. In music you can no know how to transcribe music and still make a “hit”. Which is what I think Quincy has an issue with

      • immackulate

QUINCY need to change up his angle cuz it sounds like he’s bytching
even though he’s just bringing things to light – lot of old heads dont want or like to be compared to their younger, more affluent COUNTERPARTS
its that TRUE SKOOL vs NEW SKOOL thang – but as a pioneer, patriach, and game changer he should bring the less musically inclined into the fold and LEARN’EM SOME GAME lol or at least teach the one’s that want to know

      • OaklandOxymoron

I couldn’t have said it better! I totally agree!

    • YaheardSyndicate

Quincy Jones bitter? He produced the greatest album and artist of all time.

  • “It’s obvious Jones has no love for Combs.” keep ya opinions out of your articles! unprofessional

  • breed500

funny thing is that Q learned how to read and write scores later on in his development as an producer and musician,,but I get his point..Diddy however isn´t a producer in the truest sense of the word he is a creative director more or less..and he gets $..so take that, take that..

    • scullyson

      lmao

  • S

I don’t think Quincy Jones is bitter because he doesn’t have anything to be bitter about. These two are in two different lanes when it come to producing. I think he more mad when people try to compare new top producers to him because these new producers don’t really sit down and write music or even play an instrument. Alot of these new kats use “one man band” programs like Fl studio or Reason where you don’t need external equipment to make music. Its all done on a computer program, I know because I produce and I’m kinda from both sides of the track because I used to buy all kinds of equipment like MPC’s and all kinds of keyboards but nowadays you don’t need to do that because it’s all wrapped up in one program. As a matter of fact most new kats don’t even know how to read sheet music. Its only a few that write music like Raphael Saadiq, R.Kelly, Neyo and few others. And Bands in this era are unheard of. You only have bands like The Roots or a band like Mint Condition that’s still doing it the old school way. Quincy is one of the best to EVER do it in any form of music hands down. Diddy could never compare to him but Diddy is to me the better business man. Go google Quincy’s track record and compare it to Diddy track record and there is no comparison. All I have to say is Quincy produced Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall album and the Thiller album in which I still don’t think has been topped in sales Nuff Said!. But Quincy should give Diddy his props for his accomplishments because althought he got people for alot of money! He was responsible for ALOT of kats getting bread too.

    •  No they are actually in the same lane Quincy Jones can produce a hip hop record as well as a jazz record which he has done he did tracks for ludacriss and game.

      • immackulate

dayum CHECK MATE – i didnt know that my bruvah –

      • S

, So your saying that just because Quincy did a few rap songs him and Diddy are in the same lane? Listen I respect Puff all he has done but I don’t see him arranging scores, being a music & film composer or working with people like Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles,Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra,Marvin Gaye, Dean Martin “R.I.P”, Sarah Vaughn, Stevie Wonder, Eddie Van Halen and the list goes on. I don’t see Puff playing ANY instruments. Quincy has 27 Grammys and what lane is Puff in?and I can care less about the Grammy’s but I know if your not in certain lanes your not getting that. I don’t see Puff producing Rhythm and blues, Funk, Big Band, jazz or Rock-N-Roll no time soon that’s all I’m saying. So CHECKMATE TO THAT PLAYBOY! Like I said NOT IN THE SAME LANE. That’s like comparing Prince to Trey Songs because they both did R&B. YA FEEL ME!

    • immackulate

if you scroll thru all my post – you just said er’thang i was thinking already – 2 different lanes, era’s

  • bigdoe6

Well what he saying is true. Sometimes the truth just hurt. Deal with it.

    • immackulate

quincy dont wanna talk about his own truths LOL
promise he aint NO DIFFERENT than PUFF

  • thaGOD83

quincy, with his gay ass lol, is right on the money, like mark curry said, the smartest thing puff did was include himelf on every project in every video, so he would also be a musical interest meaning his company couldnt fire him because his face, is so recognizable on/in every project and that payed out because his image is used to market products, not OWN but market, but musically the best thing he ever did was have the HITmen, stevie, myrick, carlos, etc. that made those HITS.and they made him appear to be a musical genius, even though he beyonced them by putting puff after every beat as if he produced, and we are only speaking music, he is not musically inclinded..he HAD good ears back in the day, but his IMAGE,like mentioned earlier or EGO, hurt bad boy, and any respect a Real musician would have, puff era last from uptown/BADB BOY 92-2001, quicny is right on the money, and he said not to take away from his business , so he is cleary not hating, and quicny has more personal wealth than diddy anyway, not gross (all the companies he doesnt own) but money he can touch..puff, diddy, see my point is a brand, not an artist, producer, rapper, singer, etc…only a brand, that is all he has left…quincy till this day is still making music, he cant write music, not only lyrics, he is a conducter of 50+symphony, so from his point of view, seeing all of the talented artists that never got paid, because they were not as media whorish as puff, he is right by saying he is a businessman, and i would have put limited in front of that, PEOPLE there is a bigg line between the truth and hate, KnoW the difference because what he said is the truth, put these non talented ego maniacs in there place..SHALOM

    • Casor_Greener

this dude with then Shalom! ahah judah is that you?

      • immackulate

yooo i asked that same thang on a different post … no response though

      • scullyson

        I peeped That as well…(Judah/Shalom)…..

      • thaGOD83

        explain please bro….the judah part

    • immackulate

they said the same thing about DRE … you cant compare puff/dre to quincy cuz its 2 different genre’s of music … rappers rap in BARS and not NOTES – yes QUINCY is right but he also wrong for not telling the whole truth on WHY hip hop produces dont need to kow what a musical note is – beat machines and orchestra/bands are 2 different devices

i dig that  (quincy, with his gay ass) comment too

  • King Cold

when the last time diddy had a hit? hahaha. get em Q

    • DLOUPO

When was the last time quincy had a hit

    • rs_yes

Wasn’t “Good Morning” a hit?  Oh…what about “Shot Caller”?  I’m just saying…he’s marketing those songs.  Two (2) different types of folks here… Quincy was the Worker Bee who became known for this dedicated work ethic in string sounds together, while Diddy became known for his Marketing ability.

  • Bad Boy is a rest haven for one hit wonders and tax write offs!

When is the last time that an act had three albums on Bad Boy?
Puff is a bonifide leech when it comes to music!

    • Nemesis_Enforcer

Straight up tax write offs lol

    • immackulate

thats the game … thats why you see artists slowly but surely getting back to the
indie route cuz going major you gonna always have a hand in your pocket – AT ALL TIMES – what kills me is how niggahs cont. to think they can reinvent the wheel by signing to bad boy year after year like it aint gonna happen to them …

HELL BIGGIE DIED DAMN NEAR BROKE – and he was puff’s MEAL-MILL ticket
dont see where NEW ARTISTS signed to bad boy think they gonna be treated better or any different

  • junj03

not a damn rumor and Sydney fails again

      • junj03

i can do her job. everything on hiphopdx is here after worlds. its called copy & paste…illseed is much better at this & this is not a rumor dude. its on hiphopdx as a fact

      • immackulate

for real peeps … ILLSEED stepped down from writing a while ago
i been frequenting thsi site for almost 5 yrs – and there’s always a
“rumor” that’s not really a rumor – there’s always a “title” that has nothing
to do with the post … they get rid of her i promise it will be another one just as bad as you believe sydney to be … PROMISE. eventually, you gonna start turning the other cheek to typoes, errors, misleading titles, and a bunch of feminine azz DRAKE posts –

END OF THE DAY we all mostly MEN and really shouldnt be caring about this gossip like shyt – on the cool, i dont even come here for the rumors cuz i could very well get them at HIPHOPDX.COM 1st – its a damn habit at work – it help me pass the day

  • Not only can he not read music he nor suge knight, nor damon dash know how to program a drum machine which is the cornerstone of hip hop music, which started the demise of the music when people started making glorified compilations with a million producers and no coherent albums.

    • immackulate

jam master jay didnt produce beats for RUN DMC either homey –
yella boy, dr. dre didnt make all of NWA beats

  • Q.

    (YAWNS)

  • Q.

So where was this commentary 15 years ago, Quincy? It might’ve changed the course of the game, coming from a legend. LATE.

Puffy…the glorified A&R, the Don King of urban contemporary music. His true talent lies in his ability to con people with his mouth. Nigga sacrificed blood, lives for that money, with no remorse. If that’s what people find admirable and respectable about this cat, that says more about you than it does him.

    • Casor_Greener

brothas need to learnt hey business, that’s why it isn’t cool to be ignorant

      • immackulate

different type of genre … and different type of era
quincy grew up when artists played strings, pushed piano keys, and plucked chords (R&B)

puff is a product of TECHNOLOGY, sampling, and looping (RAP)

both have made DECENT contributions to the both genres

Michael Jackson’s THRILLER – Big’s READY TO DIE

truth be told – they had apprentices, in-house producers who really worked that shyt – them niggahs just rec’v the CREDIT

      • YaheardSyndicate

Comparing Ready To Die To Thriller is just stupid. Ready To DIe isnt even the best rap album of the 90s, and Thriller is considered one of the best albums ever recorded any genre.

      • S

Wow! My man compared Ready to Die(Which was my sh!t) to Thriller………THAT IS NUTS! @YaheardSyndicate….you took the words right out of my head….I was thinking the same thing.

      • immackulate

NOW HEAR THIS … i didnt compare READY TO DIE to THRILLER MR. JUST STUPID – i said they both had GREAT contributions to their genre’s THRILLER was as GREAT to pop music aS READY TO DIE was to HIP HOP

comparing the 2 would be saying – one was better than the other – if you dont comprehend something ask 1st cuz if you respond off impulse makes you look like a jackazz

      • Good a response that makes sense

    • immackulate

QUINCY made those same sacrifices for MONEY – “2 peas in a pod”

      • YaheardSyndicate

What are you talking about? Quincy Jones produced “We are The world”, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, and Michael Jackson. Comparing Puff Daddy to Quincy Jones is like Comparing Kurt Rambis to Michael Jordan

      • immackulate

did i ask for a list of quincy’s production NO
I THINK YOU NEED TO RE-READ THEN HOP BACK ON MY DICK AFTER THAT … OK?

      • Q.

        Who was Q’s sacrifice?

  • ccwaterbound32

    aint like quincy was lying…

  • Nemesis_Enforcer

“HITS” does not equate to music.  Nicki Minaj – Beez in the trap and Tyga – Rack City are both “hits” but neither consist of any actual music.  Rack City has a slight baseline but thats it.

So a “hit is null and void in a convo about music.

  • johnblacksad

Hmmm… Yo Quincy, i’m really happy for you, i’mma let you finish, but Puff Daddy had some of the best ad libs of all time!
Bad boy…eh eh… eh eh… and we won’t stop, cause we can’t stop… ah ha!

Real talk though… Fcuk you Quincy Jones… what the fcuk is wrong with yo parkinson azz? Yeah, n!ggaz got no respect for real… for old n!ggaz like that… so what you made Thriller?! You don’t have to shoot a young brotha down like that… and since when did Puffy claim to know what a b-flat is? (had to google that mothafcuka) ..Fcuk yo b-flat n!gga… all we care is if this sh!t bumpin or not.

Alzheimer sh!t… or maybe viagra side effects sh!t

(Quincy gets inside mad bad hoes tho… Uncle Russell’s style)

    • immackulate

quincy got CREDITS but he sucker … he aint no better or worse than DIDDY (imo)

      • johnblacksad

It is hard to deny his creditS indeed… rep, check! dollar$$$, check!(pun that!), fame, check! top notch breezes, check! …and since he seems to care so much : Musicology, check!

(It aint like Puffy aint done sh!t either tho…)

      • immackulate

they both one in the same – just different genres

      • YaheardSyndicate

are you stupid? quincy jones produced OFF THE WALL, THRILLER and BAD. Thriller alone has made more money then everything diddy has done musically, and business wise. Probably around 70 million copies sold and counting

      • immackulate

DAMN this niggah everywhere i turn LOL

      • S

Your comment seem to be personal rather than facts….

      • immackulate

personal … man kick rocks homey you obviously dont know shyt from shoe shine and took what i said about another man PERSONALLY yourself “homo tendencies” – QUINCY was a pillow biting, white woman worshipping BATTY BOY lol

    • S

I don’t he really was trying to shoot him down he’s just stating the facts. He came off a little ruff but Puff grown….He came take it playboy!

  • thuglifefukdapolice

F P DIDDY IM STILL A BAD BOY KILLA JAY Z DIE TOO

  • Weedras

This ain’t no diss its just the truth, Quincy is a classically trained musician who can play numerous instruments and can read and write music…. only few in hip hop can touc h Quincy and Diddy ain’t one, so what if he said it.. it’s not like he’s saying nothing bad about Diddy… shit i can’t read music either but gimme a MPC5000 and sync that shit with fruityloops and see if i don’t make a banger lol!!

  • Vaughn Pyne

quincy is the fuckin man!! if you dont know  !!! ya better  ask somebody!!!! better google that man before ya start dissin him.shit even 2pac dated the mans daughter.just to get close to him

  • Quincy Jones produced “Thriller” then turned around and wrote a classical music film score for “The Color Purple”. Do you know how difficult it is to write for a 15+ instrument orchestra?? You CANNOT compare Quincy and Diddy. Cut that sh*t out, bruh. SMH.

    • S

      Nuff said!

  • jamaicanbornanbreed

been dat way since big died….quincy just talking da truth

  • count_210

quincy selling records and creating music 2 different things playa,i don’t think elvis knew what a bflat was either but he sold a whole bunch of records

  • I’m happy Quincy is saying this… Shiit, only about 10% of the producers today can read music…

    • rs_yes

10%?  You have evidence of that?  Don’t throw stats out there if you don’t have proof to back it up.  #ImJustSaying

      • S

Ok Roderick! What % of producers nowadays do you think can read & write music? Its not alot playboy! You go put same sheet music in front of your favorite producers face and see what the reaction is.

  • Pierre Elliott

SIMPLE AND PLAIN HE SAYING THE TRUTH. THIS NGGA AND OTHERS LIKE HIM
ARE VULTURES….THEY NEVER GIVE ANYBODY A CHANCE TO COME WITH ANYTHING
NEW..THE WHOLE TIME PUFF HAS BEEN OUT HIS BEST WORK WAS BIG FAITH AND MARYS ” MY LIFE” OTHER THAN THAT HE IS TRASH…JUST LIKE DRAKE IS TRASH
FLO-RIDA IS TRASH. RHIANNA IS TRASH. GAGA IS TRASH. JAY Z IS TRASH.
WAYNE IS TRASH. BIRDMAN IS TRASH. TRINA IS TRASH.    and what he is saying is: come with something better… something with depth, that has meaning…
Because some of us are not WORTHY of being musical heirs to these LEGACIES that
came before us.   Anyone to say “FCUK YOU” to Quincy… YOU NEED TO FCUK YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE dont even have to talk ANY of the MJ stuff, but he is HISTORY.
He is the living progression of the black exp over the last 60 YEARS!!!
ANd when he says Puffy is trash, he IS TRASH…
And for a man of HIS stature to come out and say that means something, it means he can see into this mans character, and that at the end of the day…

    Puff is a hack.

    • black_messiah9000

      So well put. Thank you.

  • rep87

Q is right about this, Diddy actually screwed up alot of songs with his nagging lines all thru the late
Biggie tracks and damn show messed up videos with his non dancing azz he caught a break on others talent, Biggie was a beast on the mic and had some nice beats made by others, Q and guys like the late Iassc Hayes who could write and compose music thats Real Talent, Diddy has no talent and does a dis service to the careers of his artist and yes diddy is illierate when it comes to music and couldnt reconize a B flat true statement from MR> JONES

  • D_Ably

Why is it obvious that jones has got no love for puffy? I mean Jones is just talkin truth, there ain’t no diss in truth. Puffy is to music what Ronald is to McDonalds or what mickey mouse is to disney

  • Pingback: Hip-Hop Rumors: Quincy Jones Calls Diddy Musically Illiterate | I Am South Florida()

  • Ravishing Quinc Rude

“making hits” and “making music” is 2 vastly different things. People keep calling Diddy a producer… shit, if I was Quincy Jones, I’d be offended too. It takes more to produce a track than some bravado and swagger.

    • S

Word! I’d be offended too……I only speak because I produce. I can read sheet muic but I will tell you the truth! I’m not sitting down at the piano writting sheet musie, I wish I could but I play piano by ear so I have mad respect for producers that do. I don’t see anything wrong with people like myself that do play by ear or sample to express your art. But it is diffenently a difference because I’m around people who do write music & lyrics to create a song so its a BIG difference from just jumping on a “one man band” program and doing your thing. But truth be told Quincy not saying anything that Puff don’t already know because he pays people to do what quincy does to make the hits for him.

  • diddy’s ‘hits’ are usually pretty bad songs & i hate listening to a lot of big or other bad boy songs bcz diddy is too annoying & ruins the songs. this dude is a fame whore

  • black_messiah9000

Your article held it’s weight until the very last sentence. As if because he made hits validates anything. He’s still void of musical talent. Diddy’s artists made hits, not Diddy. Diddy isn’t a prolific rapper, singer or producer. He’s a marketing man – point blank, period.

    • scullyson

True dat..I can Rock with that…Basically Puff is a Hustla in the industry. Hell he’s a son of a hustla I mean what you expect? @ the end of the day he’s clockin $$$ it aint mine so I could care less but you dont have to like the brotha but you gotta respect his grind Just a tad bit…Im sayin

      • black_messiah9000

I don’t have to respect con men.

      • scullyson

Nope better yet you dont have to respect yourself….Actually I dont think anybody gives a rabbits A** if you do or dont…..lmao…Take it easy greazy

      • black_messiah9000

You’re a buffoon who can’t spell defending a buffoon who can’t perform or understand music. Why is it so important to you who I respect? It never occurred to you that if a man as reputable as Quincy Jones himself does not possess a level of respect for someone who parades himself as “the black Frank Sinatra” there must be a validated cause behind the expressed consideration for him. “Im sayin” smh

      • scullyson

Listen to yourself man…LOL!!! Important to me? Nah homie you got this shyt F***** up….Neither one is paying my bills so it dosent matter one way or another unlike you. Get off Quincy D*** homeboy….Yoos uh Bum ….smh ..stfu already kid

      • black_messiah9000

You’re obviously not angled towards anything remotely intelligent because you prove every bit of what I previously said concerning you. You don’t even realize who Quincy Jones is. I’m probably safe to assume that you’re one of those television/radio engineered thug wanna be’s that have to speak the loudest but usually always have nothing of value to say. Case and point. If I were a religious man I’d be praying to someone that you were not black because people like you disgrace us with your total disregard for sensible thought and/or behavior. You should put your ego aside and strive for true understanding by learning to type in complete sentences like an adult when you want to express your ideas through words in a forum, kid.

Obviously not. But I am curious to see if you’re going to actually articulate, through words of course, an actual complete thought or just reply with petty banter in foolish attempts to divert attention form the fact that you don’t have an actual thought to share in the first place. You’re drowning in your own bullshit just to have the last word. I’ll allow you to prove me to be correct again in your response. Take your time.
