Nas and Pusha T Invest in Urban Media Company

(AllHipHop News) Queensbridge native Nas has announced a joint venture to own urban media company, Mass Appeal, investing a “six-figure sum” into the company.

Other investors on the endeavor include Pusha T, record label/creative agency DECON, and an international firm, White Owl Capital.

Moving into online content, the media group is expecting to expand from print to an online publication, with Nas serving as Mass Appeal’s associate publisher.

Mass Appeal was founded in 1996 and shut down in 2008, before being revived by the current team earlier this year.

Seeking to include web video, photography, social, print and live experiences, Mass Appeal  YouTube account features behind the scenes of the magazine, the “Time Pieces” series of short videos from Jason Goldwatch, and more.

“While we embrace all things hip-hop (as it is part of our heart and soul), we stand for (and have always stood for) creative instigation,” said publisher Peter Bittenbender, who is also the CEO of DECON. “Music and its influence is such a massive part of our creative equity along with street art and fashion.”

[…] My first year at school in Virginia I was put on to the Clipse heavily, consisting of rappers Pusha-T and Malice. I knew the bare minimum of what they were about. “Grindin’” was the lunch room table cadence heard around the world and I knew of their involvement with Pharrell and The Neptunes, but until I was a freshman in college I hadn’t heard any of their completed projects. Lord Willin’ had some of the best crossover hits in hip-hop compared to any other record in the early 2000’s. “Cot Damn,” “Grindin’,” and “When The Last Time,” all had considerable radio success, but they also had some of the best mafioso styled rap singles in years. “Virginia,” became the states unofficial drug dealer anthem and simultaneously put Virginia Beach on hip-hop’s radar. After some legal troubles and two more albums, the group disbanded with Malice “finding god,” and renaming himself as No Malice while Pusha-T has risen to notable mainstream success.
