DMC Talks About His Disappointment With Hip-Hop And The Lack Of Respect For Its Pioneers

(AllHipHop News) Run-DMC is considered one of (if  not the) greatest Hip-Hop groups of all time and is often credited as the foundation of rap music crossing over to a larger audience. When you have those credentials on your résumé, your voice on the culture is seen as valuable.

Founding member Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels spoke with Access Atlanta, and the Hip-Hop icon provided his thoughts about where the culture is now.

“What bugs me about Hip-Hop is that we created it to go against everything that is on MTV and BET today,” said DMC. “The real gangsta rap told a story and said, ‘Shorty, you can do something better than that’.”

When asked about recent deaths and health scares involving Hip-Hop artists, DMC points out that the culture has 40 years of experience to look back on for guidance but does not do so.

“The problem is this, we don’t learn from the lessons that have been put forth to us from the generations preceding. We are not being responsible, and the people who want to be responsible are afraid because they don’t get no support,” stated the 48-year-old veteran.

DMC also addressed what he felt was a lack of respect by the Hip-Hop media when fellow legendary group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five became the first Hip-Hop act to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

“I was kind of disappointed in the culture of Hip-Hop. Grandmaster Flash was the first group to be inducted into the Rock Hall, and people did not celebrate it,” said the Rock Hall of Famer. “When the press came knocking [for our induction], I said, ‘Before you come talk to me, you need to talk to Grandmaster Flash.’ Magazines like the Source, XXL … they should have been the front cover. I’m happy that we’re in, but I’m not happy about how my people handled them.”

  • rap aint even that much different… run dmc.. big daddy kane.. erik b n rakim.. all had the fresh gear and mad jewels… same today… freddy foxx talked about harming somebody on every song, so violence was there too. the same way the older generation of their day frowned upon them and what they were doing, theyre doing it to todays youth.

    • Tony G.

rap and the hip hop culture in general is FAR from where it was back then bro..sorry

      • MrNoName2K

        2^.. agreed

    • DirtyHarriett

You are correct BUT, not EVERY rapper said the same thing. The people you speak of had their own lane. The time you speak of, HIP HOP was diverse.

    • eddieknucks

Run DMC did songs like hard times, I’m proud to be black, your blind. Big Daddy did young gifted and black and lean on me, oh word to the mother. All of Eric B and Rakim early joints spoke of knowledge of self. Freddie fox came along around the time the gangsta rap took over. He was there before but went hard after the takeover. These cats ain’t saying shit on no songs. All swag rap. No message. Even a lot of the gangsta rappers of the day had a this ain’t the type of life message in there music.

      • Darkfather504

Good point eddieknucks!!!! the shit is not balancing out

      • Willis Deqfedt

Forgot about that joint right there. Foxx and Guru. True shit.

Rap ain’t that much different? how old are you? back in the day hip-hop was diverse and had a message that nobody thought was even a reality on the TV screen, of course everyone had jewels, but everyone had a message and a style of there own….from positive to gangster everyone had a story to tell and it was never the same….We barely now have any pieces of hip-hop left its mostly “rap music” and most everybody is saying the same thing….I hip-hop back in my life, because back in the day hip-hop changed my life from worse to better……but now kanye is right this generation are the new slaves…..

    • Pierre Elliott

YEAH AND HE IS IN CHAINS HIMSELF

  • YaheardSyndicate

he’s right and ofcourse he’s right. These dudes did shows in Russia during the cold war. I would say he’s an expert on the matter.

  • Montezuma1

Rap changes every few years with every new generation. Yes it’s different from back in the day but we had our heroes then and the youth today deserve their own. Honoring pioneers and acting as if they’re still relevant today, which is what they seem to expect are not the same. Your fans are the people who grew up with your music for the most part. To expect people who have no organic connection to your music or era to be a fan is delusional. Today’s youth love it or hate it have a mind of their own and a preference to go along with it. The old-timers miss the attention more than anything. You had your time. It’s someone else’s right now. Yours may come again or it may not. That’s life. You can’t indict an entire group because things aren’t going your way. I like Run-DMC. In my opinion they’re the greatest Hip Hop band ever bar none but that was a long time ago and all of this is subjective. Ask 20 people and you might get 20 answers. My point is artists and people tend to have an inflated sense of self. Enjoy the good times while you have them and learn to bow out gracefully if and when the time comes.

    • Spoken like a true G!

I’ll see you at the parade this year.

    • Severe Thebeneficent

nigga…huh? did you say indict an entire group because things arent going your way? lol what a crock of horse shit! What on gods blue earth made you ASSUME this LEGEND is mad because things arent going his way? lol like wtf? where did you even come up with that one? miss the attention? HA! Run DMC could TOUR the US right now and pull in more money than ALOT of these chitlin circuit ass rappers no problem if they had too…like get real lol! YOu cant even believe that bullshit! I think his point is if you dont support the foundation, the house has nothing to stand on…period! its not “hating” its cut and dry right to the point lol! These young niggas is so far in the woods chasing this money they forgetting to leave bread tracks…For themselves!
i.e. what is hip hop as a culture, rap as a genre of music gonna have in 15-20 years…of OUR OWN? Who is gonna be left in 15 yrs? who is the internet gumps gonna argue about? what top 10 list lol? GOAT who they gonna be arguing about lol? especially when everything is damn near techno already and everybody is cool with that…niggas argue AGAINST lyricism, argue AGAINST diversity, AGAINST OUR OWN LEGENDS, niggas just want it to be as lawless as the internet has made you to be! nobody has integrity to getting money as long as they got it, and thats cool too…then what? Wasnt a damn thing G about what you said…go on and take it personal…who cares…

      • Montezuma1

Personal? It’s a comment section where men who should’ve been cheerleaders catch feelings about viewpoints that make them aware of their groupie tendencies. lol From your verbiage and grammar you may want to take a few English courses. You really need to get a hobby, woman and life. You got way too much time on your hands.

    • Pierre Elliott

STUPID. GET YOUR OWN CULTURE WETBACK

      • Montezuma1

You need to get a culture instead of pretending what these old white men control is yours.

      • Pierre Elliott

        WHAT???1111 ARE YOU STUPID????!!!

      • Montezuma1

No but you are. Rap is not Black culture. It’s a white owned business where blacks get paid to make black people look like buffoons, whores and all sorts of deviant. Stupid is the guy who thinks it’s his “culture.” That would be you asshole. You’re like the prostitute who thinks the pimp is looking out. Assume the position… On your knees. So Iovine, Cohen, Rifkin, Moscowitz and all the rest can jizz in your mouth.

  • wilson

These old muhfukkas coulda put money together and started distribution. Y’all coulda built brands and labels that’ll be hot today. Now all u old fukks den sold out and wanna cry n bitch bout the lack of respect? Yall let the jews play u out OUR shyt for a few ni99er pennies. Yup, all the music sounds the same, but that was the plan once the culture thieves came in. Fukk outta here

    • Lionel Ratchie

^^^ Exactly what DMC is talking about. New niggas wouldn’t have been able to build a damn thing without DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, etc. All they want is a salute, they ain’t asking for money.

    • I agree.

    • Keep in mind that the first rappers got jerked more than today’s rappers. They had no blue print to follow….but they did kick in the door.

Any Hip Hopper that disrespects them….disrespects themselves.

    • LetsBeRealpeople

I will disagree with the whole distribution. Griff spoke on that whole choke hold. The only thing to do now is stay independent, and support that trunk sale. If we stop promoting Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and the like, then things will be as it should be, There are six beast that control distribution as a whole. As for cable ish Viacom controls mainstream hip hop. $hort spoke on sales back in the East West mess, but that East Coast press would not promote what the buyer was actually consuming ’cause of the hate. This very sight runs the same 5 stories and gets on topic every now and again. You can’t fault that last bit from this dude when he shunned the shine..he said basically “that’s all good but what about who started this movement, “The Message” I really don’t think he popped to the media, somebody asked him a question and he was straight up. That’s on Access Atlanta for asking his opinion on all things hip hop.

  • I didnt know I had to give 2 shits about the rock and roll hall of fame…why dnt the pioneers come together and create they own?!?

  • kwimby72

I agree with D and these fools on here knocking them legends ur not looking at the big picture cuz if u haven’t noticed rnb from back n the day still gets played hip hop doesnt which means the industry will take a dump on ur favorite rapper for today there are still things that need to be done groups like the rolling stones red hot chilli peppers even linkin park still get respect from young n older why is it we want to disrespect our hip hop founders .rolling stone will run a beatles cover but xxl wont cuz they worry abt sales which means we still haven’t come wake up ppl

  • kwimby72

And how is it u know abt the business and protecting urself…..oh through the old heads…but what is funny is the old heads still tour all over the world most rappers from the past 5 years are locked up washed up and forgotten abt cuz most of u r looking for the nxt new guy that will be following the same routine getting played by the industry that only pretends they like hip hop music

  • docg gee

@Eli……What more do u want from the pioneers?? Thank u….u just proved my point.

  • Severe Thebeneficent

The comments Im reading are exactly what he’s talkin about. And you ever notice that the wildest most disrespectful comments come from blank screen name niggas too scared to come out of the shadows and show your fkn face lol! Murder yourself for thinking this man is somehow missing the spotlight or has an inflated sense of self! niggas like YOU are a cancer to the culture! This generation has more opinions than logic and thats 80% of the problem! Everybody has these idiotic point of views like “thats just the way it is deal with it” “yall did it, why cant we” “yall had your turn” etc or your blaming OUR GREATS for not doing enough…which is some bullshit! You think for one second these artist didnt break down doors for OUR culture/genre your dumber than you sound, ESPECIALLY Run DMC, I dont know how anybody who claims to love hip hop can even form their mouth to say some dumb shit like that! He talkin about how your destroying OUR OWN footsteps and killing YOUR OWN LEGACY! Dummy! Yall gonna be half techno half dubstep dickheads just happy to be down with something in 10 yrs you keep fuckin around! Niggas keep fighting back against your own shit! And for what exactly? Its not like these new niggas is making half the money artist in the 90s or 2000s were making, their hardly selling records and the music is easily forgettable!
Hip Hop broke crazy barriers in music, the rest of the universe knows this, its the feeble minded youth WITHIN HIP HOP who dont get it! think abou tit, Its gotta suck for niggas like DMC and whoever else who helped craft the art, who saw it start from some local shit to what it is today watch the rebels without a cause generation run hip hop into the ground like its some right of yours or thats just the way it goes and we should deal with it…and all you can say is “its your fault?”. smh I pray you and karma have a loooong miserable life together sir…that is all…

  • I feared this would read like another old school head making his claims
for something he can’t back. But it’s surprisingly well formulated and a
logical statement from the beginning to the end.

He knows where Hip-Hop comes from as a revolution of the lower class.
People who didn’t become criminals and used their skills, no matter how
much they were shown the middle finger. Years later it has been all
bought out by corporate America and all the key figures were well
compensated and rewarded for their treason. Dividing the people
by promoting ego-centrism and jealousy. Get rich or die trying.
Then spend all your money on luxury goods, the money you from
Drug sales or other hustles that harm your own people.
Robin Hood reverse. Take from the poor to donate to the rich.

remember back in the days when new york was on top of the rap game in the 1980’s & they were so cocky & arrogant and they dissed anybody who wasn’t from new york ?

but the tables have turned BIG TIME & the south controls the rap / hip-hop game weather you like it or not , but nobody seen this coming . the reason the south took over the game , is because they made music for the ladies to dance to , think about this ! females can’t dance off rakim or public enemy , i have have respect for those artist but the times have changed & everything is catered to the ladies .

peace to pioneers of the rap game !
