A$AP Rocky To Kendrick: You Smoking Crack If You Think You The King Of New York

(AllHipHop News) A$AP Rocky loves the competitive spirit his brethren Kendrick Lamar incited with his “Control” verse but does believe the West Coast MC was “crazy” for naming himself the King of New York.

In an interview with Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex, A$AP Rocky, one of the MC’s named in Kendrick’s “Control” verse, Rocky said Kendrick must be “smoking crack” in reference to his King of New York comment. While the Harlem MC was simply joking, he did believe it was good for Hip Hop:

Honestly, K. Dot and them ni**as, that’s fam. I think hip-hop needs this shit,” said Rocky. “It’s ni**as pissed off just because they wasn’t mentioned. I’m not justifying shit, rap is rap. The ni**a didn’t say nothing about nobody mother, he ain’t want problems. He said these is my ni**as and I’m lettin’ ya’ll know it’s competition. What’s the problem? That man know I’m where he at.

Rocky then admitted that he hardly listens to rap these days however he did like Joell Ortiz and B.O.B’s responses to Kendrick.

How come all these rappers say they hardly listen to rap? It is like a football player saying he doesn’t watch any games or an actor saying he doesn’t watch any movies, an author not reading any books. How can you not be a fan of the line of work that you are in?

    • Pierre Elliott

cause the MAJORITY of these NEW dudes are FOLLOWERS.
Everyone in NYC wants the real shlt back, on top of that REAL MCs
who have something to say or who aint trying to do TRAP RAP>

Until ANY of these dudes makes that real HEART FELT HIP HOP
      THEY WILL FOR EVER SUCK…

DONT MATTER WHAT COAST YOU FROM…..THAT GOES FOR OLDER HEADS AS WELL..

      • @Real_SirJamie

But (In my opinion) when the “Real” is in peoples face they don’t accept it. They actually LOOK for ways to diss it. For instance. I’ve heard people say “New York music don’t sound like New York anymore”. OF COURSE if you listen to French or A$AP Mob. But what about Mysonne The General? They find a way to diss him. “He’s washed” or “Isn’t he with BWS? That’s a west coast crew that aint New York” (even though his music is still NY’s sound) or Jadakiss, Stylez P, Uncle Murda, Hell even Maino still sounds like N.Y. music. But you have to figure out what YOU think “Hip Hop” is. A bunch of kids just having fun in the park dancing and rapping about really nothing at all, (Busy Bee, Sugarhill Gang) or are you looking for the new KRS-One or Public Enemy, N.W.A. or something like that?

      • Pierre Elliott

YEP. ITS TIME FOR THE NEW GEN, AND IT AINT THESE CATS…….. IF ITS GOTTA BE ME, THEN IT WILL BE.

BUT ITS ABOUT TIME TO GET THIS STARTED.
Put it this way, I was at a beat battle and i smashed everyone.
Just Blaze happened to be there, no biggie.
But when I played my final joint to nail the coffin, I could see Just Blaze eyes watering. Because He just got a glimpse of the future….

And when its REAL. YOU FEEL IT IN YOUR HEART>

And it aint ASAP. Or maino. Not even these older cats.
        They done.

    • 7yoyo7

      Why? EGO!
None of these dudes wanna show another rapper’s recognition. Unless they are extra cool with that other person or unless it’s an “OG”.

Of course they listen to rap music, they just wont admit it.

Damn I know Kendrick Lamar is somewhere rubbing his hands together lovin all the promotion yall giving him, especially in NY..he knew what he was saying when he wrote it and knew the backlash he was gonna get, thats why he aint responded to anything lol…cant lie, well played

    • TALK_BOSS

      Checkmate lol

  • J.Erick

A$AP clique cant say shyt tho. A group of Harlem ni99as who rap like they from Houston

  • PhilTheGreat

Why do so many rappers say that they hardly listen to rap these days and then rap? Maybe that is what is wrong with rap???

    • @Real_SirJamie

Yea you make a good point, I remember back in the day (2002 – 2005 maybe?) on 106th & Park Free asked Stylez P what was in his CD player. He said, “Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Minnie Riperton, Marvin Gaye… Some old Jazz. Yea I don’t really listen to other rappers.” I was like WHAT?!?!?! All that GRIMEY ISH you spit and you sitting around listening to “Lovin You”.

      • PhilTheGreat

Well if you’re listening to something that has soul or street culture I can’t really hate, because that is where a lot of original hip hop came from. (They had to start somewhere- i.e. Sugarhill Gang went through that) Those old blues, jazz, pop beats. If you’re listening to current rock, pop top 40, acid music etc. and making hip hop songs then that is what is showing in the music.

      • @Real_SirJamie

You got that right… If you notice most of lil jon’s beats, and most of the gucci mane, waka flocka beats, hell most trap songs today, Its just techno/house sounds (synths and leads) the bpms are just slower. Sorry if I’m talking that producer talk I make beats LOL.

      • AK

yeah but most hip hop beats come from jazz and other genres too

      • Pierre Elliott

didnt know u made beats but u 100% right. ive been tellin dudes since LAST YEAR that all the COMMERCIAL RAP is all TECHNO 808 BULLSHlT. I was here when MC Hammer was the rage. I was here when VANILLA ICE took over. I was here when PUFFY and Arista Records decided to monopolize Hip Hop, turn it to RAP MUSIC which came before HIP HOP which was MOSTLY TRASH records.

I dont give myself props cause I ‘ Keep it 100″ on making music and listening to dope stuff, its just thats all I know.

So when I see a 35 to 40 year old dude playing Trap; I wanna smack him. Cause you aint nothin but a follower.
And then you look like a older dude trying to recapture your youth while playing ugly soul-less music.

I grew up in a time ( which aint that long ago) where NONE of OUR music got ANY PLAY. The black stations didnt really play any hip hop until 1988-89-90. So you had to get tapes from cousins from L.A. or NYC cause they had different styles but were STILL ILL and ORIGINAL.

SO you younfg cats that rock drake wayne jeezy, do you.
You need something to hold on to, but in the big scheme of things…. YOUR RAP MUSIC SUCKS, and it aint that older heads is tight. We cant be when ALL of OUR music STILL gets played. The new gen STILL COPIES.

But right now NYC is garbage. EVERYONE. I make beats and I rhyme, I am taking it upon myself to bring this SHlT back.

Im nasty on the beats. And I rhyme. I dont have nothing up except Soundcloud and Myspace and Reverbnation.

I am the focused. I am The few. And I have a message.
I am about show and prove. ANd I will show you all how it should be done…..

I met a couple rappers and well known producers.
Yeah they made some dope stuff, but its time to move over or OUT of the way…

So in order to become a KING I must KILL the messenger.
If I gotta battle dudes, then nggas will get embarrassed.
So if YOU aint about the NEW struggle which never left
then you need to move into masters house.

Be yourself. Dont minimize YOURSELF to fit into SOMEONE ELSES WORLD…..

AND THATS WHAT WE HAVE DONE TO OUR MUSIC IN 15 YEARS———

ANd then the corporations took the rest.

    • chippc

Reminds me of when rappers say, “I’m not a rapper!, or when speaking on other hip hop cats calling them, “these rap dudes”, Usually said by niggaz with minimum to no skills.

    • If you were ASAP Rocky…..would YOU listen to ASAP Rocky?

Only read the quote but he’s right, people are all up in arms like Kendrick said some personally disrespectful stuff. An “Ether” verse this was not. He just said he’s out to make music so good he steals other people’s fans. These people need to stop crying.

Pull ya skirts down b’s, the man was just stirring things up with some competitive words.

  • Fredrick”The Truth” Douglass

NY niggas act like broads… That nigga Asap Rocky spoke some real shit bout how niggas speak all that i shot this and that shit, but when a nigga say something about being this and that of NY these niggas go to crying and complaining…LAMES!-Fredrick “StopCrying” Douglass

NY fell when Big, Big Pun, and Big L died and everybody started beefing inside the city. Jay – nas/ nas – mobb deep/ rocafella- dblock/ dipset-gunit/ gunit- terror squad, etc etc 10-15 years ago everybody was sayin rappers beef too much blah blah blah now everybodys cool and niggas dont like it. Its safe to say niggas will never be happy

    • digitallife

NY fell because it’s easier to sign dudes from elsewhere to crap contracts where they don’t own anything and don’t make much off anything. To get signed out of NYC now you need to have a barn burner track or some sort of media buzz on your own. In NYC there are courses musicians can take that teach them music law for free, you don’t see that everywhere so artists here try to negotiate more and become more difficult to manage. Musically pull up nyc’s rappers mixtapes and tell me we fell off musically.

      • OSBKE3000

u must only know of the world in a from the view of a one block radius bruh .. that was dumb shit .. an I seen you speak on the real a few times before .. not so much now

      • digitallife

Ask any manager, a&r, etc what are the first three things an unsigned artist comes in asking for first from nyc vs elsewhere. It’s a drastic change from what it used to be…there is a huge self entitlement mentality with NYC rappers thinking they will be the next jay-z. The talent is undeniably here but even the radio stations here barely play non-mainstream music. Ask anyone from NYC when was the last time they heard a non mainstream song on the radio here.
