Talib Kweli Says “NY Radio Doesn’t Support NY Music” + Hot 97’s Ebro Darden Responds

(AllHipHop News) Ever since last year’s big debate over New York City radio’s apparent support of local acts, the dialogue has not ceased but intensified. Yesterday (December 11th), Talib spoke with SOHH sided with Trinidad James’ sentiments on New York City radio.

While not explicitly supporting James’ “South runs NY” comments, the veteran MC does perceive James’ statement as a commentary on the state of New York City radio:

Trinidad James is right, when you listen to New York radio, New York radio does not support New York music. That’s what he was speaking to.

Kweli also states that Maino, a vocal detractor of James’ comments, does not solely make New York Hip Hop but also “does music down South too.” An added reason why Kweli is sharing James’ comments is the fact that he himself made similar statements on his personal Twitter account and was criticized for them. The criticism Kweli may be referring to is that from Hot 97’s Program Director Ebro Darden who responded to Kweli’s comments three hours after the article was published:

Kweli has since asked to thoroughly discuss his comments and Ebro Darden’s “troll” accusations with the Hot 97 Program Director either on air on Twitter:

Talib Kweli’s sixth solo album Gravitas, will be released this Sunday (December 15th).

what do you know, one of your fellow new york rappers is complaining about newyork hip-hop. you dont say. im tired of beating a dead drum but i’ll say it one more time. new york rap is currently on life support and i dont see their prognosis changing anytime soon. if your style stinks and your lyrical content sucks, face the music, your a non motherf_cking factor. hip-hop as a whole is almost unbearable to listen 2, but these down south country bumpkins are keeping money generating throughout the hip-hop community. more than what i can say 4 boring rappers new york city currently has representing them. i like talib but the unconscious black hip-hop community dont wanna hear the relevant message he has 2 say because the lyrics are 2 righteous 4 their lost souls.

Radio is a business for PROFIT, they have to play top 40’s and HOT singles to keep their rating$ up. Why don’t we blame the NY rappers for not evolving their style and make HOT tracks. I can’t blame the radio for giving what the people wants as a business man, BUT they can do more to help promote local artists……….I am in Miami and we say the same ish about our Radio stations. I have been all over the US and the only major cities that promotes their local artist are ATL, LA & Oakland.

    • Chrisblackusa

top 40 is not new York radio,,that is the rest of the country,,nyc hiphop history is to break new music,,,nyc hiphop radio gets the profit for being new York radio!!! you have rock & roll stations that still play rolling stones music and they getting that guap,,,nyc is a nation of mc’s and a nation of dj’s, bboys and graffiti kings,,,so I am with homey on nyc not supporting the small nyc guy in music,,,used to be able to send ya tape to the station ,,,nyc is ripe for what ed lover does on xm radio for public radio,,,,

      • 1SOFLO1

        Those days are over.

      • Chrisblackusa

yes the days of mainstream free radio for organic hiphop is in big money hands,,,but hiphop itself is back to square 1 as far as underground radio where it first gained airways time,,,college radio,,what we have today we didn’t have then is internet radio ,,

      • 1SOFLO1

You referring about when it was for the love of the art, it’s business now my friend.

  • Obi Won

Maybe its the fact that I don’t listen to the radio, but its still NY that get regular rotation. Even some new cats like Joey Badass & Troy Ave, make good music. Not really radio friendly but still go. Lloyd Banks still got that grimy NY feel to his music, but radio sux now.
Let Nicki Minaj & French Montana represent the radio portion of it, but its still real NY music out there.

  • scullyson

Fact is it’s not east or west or south running things. It’s what type of music execs wanna push. This era is all about being super trumped up with a few hot singles and a following. During the Grimey era we had a bunch of Brooklyn rappers. Gangsta era we had plenty of west coast artists. But because the south has been suppressed for years because ppl thought their accent sounded funny country or slow, is the reason why their run/turn at being on top longer. Think about it a lot of ppl thought kris Kris’s were from nyc. That was jermaine dupri. They appealed to what we wanted. The south has been making mainstream rap for years. Nobody fucked with outkast in nyc when they were rapping (minus the accent) with more of an up north flow & bars. When wheezy rapped like jigga nobody really cared.. It’s the south being itself and having been boxed In o trying to fit in with the east & west is why their run is so long. Nobody wanna hear that tough shit with no hook or quantum physics lyrics anymore, the recession is over. Now it’s about flexing being the biggest boss and it’s relatively new to the rest of us. Let the south have their run, southerners don’t get cocky because it didn’t start in the south so u got it from us do your thing but ur not bigger than the culture rap/hiphop will be fine w/o ayo gotti, juicy j, gucci, Paul waul or who ever. But it’s the T.I.’s, Ross’s & wheezys we really need from down there. Ya can keep cash out Trinidad flames and the rest if corner sounding niggaz.

THE RECESSION ISNT OVER, AND ITS ALL BEING CONTROLLED BY CORP
SOME OF WHAT YOU ARE SAYING IS TRUE BUT ITS BIGGER THAN THAT, ITS DYNAMICS AND CONTROL-DIVIDE AND TAKE OVER.

ONE–THE PROGRAMMING FORMAT OF HOT 97 HAS BEEN DUPLICATED SO MANY TIMES OVER IN THE COUNTRY AND THE WORLD IT IS SICK.

WHEN IT COMES TO PLAYING LOCAL ARTISTS–IT ALL STOPPED WHEN THE RADIO STATIONS FELL INTO THE PAYOLA. THEN THE STATIONS WERE SCOOPED UP BY BIGGER COMPANIES WHICH IN TURN CUT DEALS
      WITH DISTS–LABELS–DEMOGRAPHICS–COMMERCIALS—PRODUCTS.

THEY DONT CARE ABOUT BLACK SOUND-SOUL OR FEEL.
AND WHEN YOU HAVE A WHOLE “CULTURE” BUILT AROUND GETTING YOUR DOLLAR–EDUCATING YOU IS THE LAST THING THEY WANT TO DO.

THEY WANT TO CONTROL YOUR DOLLAR–FROM WHEN YOU CASH YOUR CHECK–TO–WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR PURCHASE—SO THE SAME MONEY CAN RECYCLE ALL OVER AGAIN.

SO UNDERSTAND: SO FAR THE SOUTH HASNT STOOD FOR ANYTHING
EXCEPT : STRIPPERS–SYRUP–CLUBS–AND MORE RECENTLY MOLLY.

WHICH ROSS SO FAMOUSLY PUT–NY HIP HOP reguardless GRIMEY
      STREET–UNDERGROUND–EDUCATED PEOPLE TO SOME EXTENT.

BE IT THE DRUG GAME–SCHOOL SYSTEM–DIRTY COPS–SOCIAL ILLS.
EVERYDAY LIFE FOR YOUR PARENTS–THE SAME CAN BE SAID FOR THE WEST COAST AND ORIGINAL SOUTHERN OGs.

AND ILL SAY IT AGAIN—-THE SOUTH HAS WASTED THEIR TIME DOING NOTHING BUT DANCING-DRINKING–AND JIVING–WHICH IS WHAT PEOPLE DO, BUT NOT ALLLLLLLLLLLLL THE TIME.

LIFE IS SERIOUS SOMETIMES. WHERE IS JEEZY OR WAYNE TO SAY SOMETHING ABOUT TRAYVON MARTIN? OH HE COULDNT CAUSE HE ALREADY DISSED EMMIT TILL. WHY DONT YOU SEE OUTKAST OUT?
OR EVEN BIG BOIS ALBUM GOT HATED ON. NO PROMO AT ALL.

BUT ITS MORE THAN JUST THE SOUTH—ITS EVERYTHING.
ALL MUSIC SUCKS—–KANYE,JAYZ ITS ALL THE SAME SHlT OVER AND OVER AND OVER….AND OVER AND OVER

DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT RAPPERS–FROM THE WEST–EAST–EVEN THE SOUTH AND NORTH ARE SYSTEMATICALLY BEING HATED ON.

THEY HAVE A COMPLETE LIST OF PEOPLE WHO *NOT* TO PLAY.

LOOK UP CLEAR CHANNEL WHICH OWNS HOT 97 AND SEE HOW MANY STATIONS THEY OWN. AND THEN ALSO LOOK UP HOW MANY BILLBOARDS THEY OWN TO ALSO ADVERTISE ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND MANY MAJOR CITIES.

WE GAVE UP HIP HOPS SOUL FOR A QUICKER DOLLAR–AND IN RETURN ITS BEEN STOLEN FROM US AND TOLD WHAT IT IS.

IM SORRY BUT FOR THIS GENERATION OF SOUTHERN RAPPERS IT AINT YOU—-YOU MADE RAP AND DANCE MUSIC. IT WILL BE NOTED.

BUT THERE IS A NEW GENERATION OF MUSIC COMING—AND IT WILL BE BASED IN THE ORIGINAL SHlT–WHICH ARE GROOVES AND SMOOTH WARM VIBES, NOT THIS UGLY SYNTH ONE NOTE NON TALENT PLAYING SIMPLE SIMON CLOWN MONKEY SHlT.

LAST TIME I CHECKED–BLACK PEOPLE DONT OWN SHlT–THE SKY IS FALLING AND DRAKES TALKING ABOUT GOING DOWN ON HIS MOMS AND HE IS CRYING…

IM SORRY YALL, BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

      • Afi Keita James

sadly it’s not gonna happen anytime soon.
