A$AP Ferg Says New York Hip Hop Never Had A Specific Sound

(AllHipHop News) In the coming years, 2013 may be seen as the turn around year for New York Hip Hop. Several rising East Coast artists and crews started getting serious attention from the media and rap fans over the last twelve months. One of those NYC collectives that made big waves in ’13 was Harlem’s A$AP Mob.

While the Mob’s A$AP Rocky became one of the few New York based rappers to log a #1 album in recent years, the “F**kin’ Problems” performer was also criticized for adopting a sound more reflective of the South and not embracing what some consider an authentic New York vibe. Fellow A$AP member A$AP Ferg feels that New York never had a distinct sound and artistic evolution is necessary in the creative process.

“New York came back, and New York never had a specific sound,” Ferg tells 1st Class Films. “If you really pay attention to Hip Hop, it went from ‘the hip hop, the hippie – everybody was rapping like that at one time. We’re suppose to keep rapping like that now? A couple of years later? No.”

Ferg also states that in the modern world the Internet allows artists to connect with musicians from across the globe and the result is a more universal sound that is not representative of any one place.

The A$AP Mob will get to display their various styles on the forthcoming compilation album Lords. The project is scheduled for release on March 14th, 2014.

You know what? This whole “NY hip hop is dead” stuff is bonkers! Hip Hop has always been about giving voice to the youth and transmitting the street news to the world. Who gives a shit about putting NY against Cali against The South. Hip Hop is Hip Hop. For all of y’all that buy into that stuff, eat a dick.

    • Sean Taylor

      ” eat a dick.”

      Spoken like a true gump.

  • The Arsonist

Is this dude 13 years old? Eastcoast,Westcoast and the south have always had their own sound.

  • Opposite Of Everyone

the east specific sound, didn’t mean everyone sounded the same, just meant if you weren’t from there, you could here the difference between east, south and west… these new cats is always trying to customize reality

  • lil nigga grew up in the ebro era… thats why he dont know what ny music sounds like.

    • cromthelaughinggod7

      Exactly!

    • Remi

      lol

  • dirtysleepy

I’m from the south that nigga don’t know shit about NY music then. NY always had that story telling grimy sound mixed with fly shit. All through the 80’s and 90’s that what it was. 2000’s came and shit been down hill ever since.

  • cromthelaughinggod7

This dude is really not a smart person. His comments I will never take seriously. There is a video on youtube with an interviewer asking him hiphop questions and he couldn’t answer none of them. I mean none of them basic questions. Example he asked ferg name the 9 members of wutang. He named 3. They asked him questions about hiphop albums he failed from the golden era. He his not hiphop. NY has a sound considered with boom bap snares and gritty drums. Ferg is a average rapper not an mc.

    • lola lovely la’shaun

and this is the end of the truth!!!!

  • Chris

I would have understood if he had just made note of the many regional influences on his own music. I can dig that. But, to say that NYC never had a specific sound?? That’s just blatantly inaccurate and further strengthens the claim that NY killed itself. This is a an “L” for Fergie and an “L” for NYC. SMH.

    • lola lovely la’shaun

ooh some more of the truth…

    • Remi

I think its unfortunate, but i agree

  • majesticking

Bullshit dude, every region always had they own sound this was how we differentiate ourselves. We used to be trendsetters now it seems that were following the trends. I’m just calling it how I see it. People will sell their souls for a buck so if this is what’s hot and this is what radio plays than I must make my music similar. There’s no balance of what we hear, it doesn’t matter to me where your from I feel all so called categories of hip hop music should be played but its not and that’s the problem. No balance in what we hear daily. Public Enemy said it fight the power we need to do that more now than ever. The powers that control radio. Where are the public enemies of today, the hip hop radicals that challenged the norm I know your out there and in time you will manifest your powers to the world. It takes a nation of millions to hold us back.

    • lola lovely la’shaun

      ahh, the truth.

    • Pierre Elliott

      I’m almost here my brotha

  • Jonathan Bacher

    What ?

  • When the boom bap sound was popular, the south had boom bap too. Listen to early 90’s southern hip hop and it was the same grooves. Outkast drums where very dirty and had a “funkier” melody to it, but the only REAL difference was that 808 but lets not act like the 808 was distinctively southern because East coast music used it where it was necessary and the south just felt it was ALWAYS necessary and that was the main difference, hell if anything the south bit the west and east to get their sound and it just blended beautifully! that being said, Whatever the east coast was doing that made it hot at the time is what every coast was doing at the time to be hot so Ferg has a point. It’s just the South is winning right now and you have to just make better music if you wanna shine! ~Detroit All Day~

    • southside4lyfe

No its not true that the south felt it always necessary. Yall new york niggaz don’t drive cars like we do in the south. We like bass in our shit when we driving. Maybe if new york niggaz could play music in their cars more than having it in their earbud on the train then you would understand why we love bass in our music.

      • Yiz

You ever been to NY? Obviously not, to assume we don’t drive cars with big bass. Come thru and see for yourself before you make dumbass generalized statements. I’m born and raised in the NY and have always had a knocking system in my ride as well as all my peoples out here.

  • MikeMillz

This nigga sound stupid. Most of these new New York niggas is dick riders , so of course he would say some shit like that. They just go with the trends instead of setting them which is what NYers used to do.

    • majesticking

Indeed just as I said. But I disagree with us being dick riders!

      • MikeMillz

I didn’t say all, but definitely most. All I hear when I’m in the streets in south shit blaring from car stereos. And its not even the south niggas that get it in, its bullshit like Future and the Migos and dude of that caliber. Im tired of hearing the “NY niggas don’t make good songs” cuz neither do these dudes. Its all formulaic repetitive garbage. Much respect tho youngin. I agree with everything you said.

  • lola lovely la’shaun

I can’t speak for everyone else but I always knew a new york emcee vs. other region of emcees….but that’s just my ear and my experience.

  • TALK_BOSS

This nigga can’t be older than 21 smh

  • regal84

He’s only saying that because he and his crew abandoned NY hip hop and completely emulated the South…there is no trace of NY Hip Hop in their music, with the exception of “1 Train”…that’s my shit…

  • Nox22

I live in the MIDWEST, in my opinion there was a NEW YORK/EAST COAST sound. You could tell what COAST a artist was from, EAST, WEST, South, and Midwest…

Even the artist states it themselves know this, here’s a quote that backs up my comment… “if you want to hear my old shit, go by my old shit…

  • Pierre Elliott
