Jay Z’s Controversial Barneys Collection Surpasses $1 Million In Sales

(AllHipHop News) No good deed goes unrewarded , not matter how misguided the deed. Six weeks after Jay Z’s BNY SCC collection debuted to heavy criticism, the collection has reportedly surpassed $1 million in sales.

The partnership was originally designed to provide Jay Z’s charity the Shawn Carter Foundation 25% of all proceeds(with Barneys accumulating 75%). However, after numerous lawsuits against Barney’s regarding racial profiling in the weeks prior to BNY SCC’s November 20th debut, the deal was changed as to give the Shawn Carter Foundation 100% of the proceeds. In addition, the Foundation is also stipulated to receive 10% of all Barneys sales of the collection on the day of its debut.

As a response to the media and public scrutiny over Barneys alleged racial profiling, Jay Z stated he would assume “a leadership role and seat on a council specifically convened to deal with the issue of racial profiling,” according to his statement on his website Life+Times on November 15th. He further addressed his stance on Barney’s racial profiling in his collaboration with Rick Ross, “Devil Is A Lie”:

You seen what I did to the stop and frisk
Brooklyn on the Barney’s like we own the bitch
Give the money to the hood, now we all win
Got that Barney’s floor lookin like a VIM

Social responsibility…James Brown would’ve shhh on Jay over this bullshhh..he could’ve and should’ve just moved from Barney’s took that shhh to a competitor like see..we don’t need you and still gotten his but noooooooo. Anyway i’m sure we’ll have a 100 apologists come on here saying he’s got no responsibility to his own people, that its business. Well if everyone still thought like that we’d still be eating at the colored section. The fact remains everyday you wake up and leave your house you as a solo person represent a whole bunch of people by default whether you like it or not.

    • Black Jay

You’re in The United States of America….. Social Responsibility????? Since when did this society ever give a damn about anything but money?

      • Da Ledgendary

        exactly!

      • Believe it or not, there WAS a time period when our people as a whole didn’t allow a dollar to control every fiber of our beings…we had MUCH bigger fish to fry. Problem is we still do, most of us just refuse to see it just cuz they’re allowin us to wet our beaks a lil bit now.

      • digitallife

It’s cause we are now programmed into a slave brand mentality..these dudes don’t get it. As once was famously said “we are our biggest threat when we think as me and not we”

      • digitallife

Clearly you know little to nothing about the history of the civil rights movement dating back to the mid 1800’s. You young mofo’s act like what’s going on in the last 20 – 40 years is all we know about racism and before that it was slavery. Social Responsibility was black men and women getting stoned while walking into colleges to become doctors and lawyers and never fighting back because their mission was for the greater good. Yeah we live in a me, me, me era where you suckers think money is everything. You got the nerve to call yourself BlackJay and don’t know jack shh about your own history son. I guess we all love dr king, malcolm, rosa, and thousands of others because they were about that dollar bill right..

      • Black Jay

Dude… The root cause of most slavery in the world is greed. Money. Period and point blank. But let’s take it back even further. Who did this country originally belong to? White People? I think not. This country was built on blood, greed, and money. The United States straight bullies and murders without regard to the individuals everyday. Just ask Bush. Why are there privately owned prisons? And you expect people to be angels while living in the flames of hell? Get the f*ck outta here with that.

Y’all are acting like Jigga spent the money on Beyoncé. There are young Black students that will use this money to better their lives and families.

You wanna be a priest? Go to church. This is America nigga. Get money or get gone.

      • digitallife

The root of slavery is money…really…because slavery didn’t exist before there was a such thing as currency anywhere in the world. Slavery wasn’t about power and prestige, right?…you talking about bush and shhh…again a young minded mofo…pick up a proper history book and learn some shh bro..cause right now you sound stupid as fck. Get money…I live four blocks from times square and guess what sucka I ain’t ever had to backstab or shade my people to get here..you know for a fact..so you raise a million bucks and spend 20 grand on scholarships but you did good with that money right…foundations spend whatever the fck they want if they want to spend it..most don’t…again learn why every musician on earth has a damned foundation..it is a tax shelter and a way to hire your family members….

      • Celz

You took all that from 2 sentences? You need to look in the mirror and check up on some history yourself..

      • digitallife

From the sugar cane fields to a midtown high riser and a masters degree. Yeah son I am the embodiment of my history…what about you?

      • Celz

So am I, I’m the program director for a NPO in So Cali that provides programs for thousands of youths in Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and L.A. counties. I come from a long line of civil rights leaders but I don’t name drop online bro. But what difference does any of that make?

      • digitallife

Well congrats my brother, I can’t knock you for your success but don’t assume i’m some broke @ss uneducated mofo either…

      • LetsBeRealpeople

Last line of the movie in Killing Them Softly. Nailed it.

    • Celz

You act like you know it was corporate policy. If their Policy was to profile every black then it would happened every time. They had some racist over zealous managers is the most likely scenario. The intentions of this partnership were good to begin with and good in the end. Jay and Barneys fumbled bad by waiting so damn long to handle it, and whoever committed the civil rights violations should be fired. But you really can’t knock rich people wasting their money like they would and then it being used for scholarships. Jay needs to step his game up he slipped big time on handling this one.. But overall it’s still a win for the foundation and honestly that’s most important.

      • digitallife

You do realize a foundation is a fancy word for rich folk to pay friends and family members absurd paychecks for doing invisible jobs right..a foundation unlike a charity can literally spend 100% of it’s money on staffing while a charity has to spend at least 15% of their money actually doing something but ok. Don’t think profiling is the policy? Take a look who is the head of security at these places…but just for a test..put on the most hood outfit you own and walk into a barney’s and walk around real slow..touching stuff on the shelves and not actually grabbing anything to buy…do that for about 15 minutes or so…look around real good while you do it…then quickly jump into a womens section of the store…i’m sure you’ll notice the casual clothing wearing “shopper” that will follow your @ss.

      • Celz

So you want me to dress like someone who doesn’t shop at the store and walk around suspiciously and touch shyt.. My nicca that will get you tagged at your local wal-mart. Stop grasping for straws. If you don’t like Jay that’s cool I’m not particularly interested in meetin the nicca either but you’re saying him having a foundation is bad because some people run bad foundations. That makes no sense, how is HIS ran. There are fraudulent charities as I am sure you are aware. So if this deal is a bad look then Jay is running a fake foundation, just say that.

You searchin high and low for a reason to cut a nicca down when you are ignoring the only valid reason, which was him waiting so long to do anything to protect his business relationships first, because I already brought it up… Weak fam.. You can do better

      • digitallife

Weak…Nicca fk you moron. Maybe just maybe I know what life was like at Rocawear..maybe just maybe i’m not sitting here talking about the man out of my @ss but ok son. Jay ain’t no different than all them other mofo’s…but had the topic been anyone else you jay-z apologists wouldn’t be saying jack shhh just because Jay is the most prominent black man financially somehow he’s no like everyone else.Wake the fk up. Slavery predates america and it wasn’t about money, it was about power and prestige. I guess all the black leaders that have been critical of the man are just hating him right..my point about barney’s is you would get followed by security for it but Bianca the white teenager kleptomaniac wouldn’t…got a white friend? Test out my theory…i’ll happily pay for the gas or transportation fare.

      • Celz

Yea nicca you are weak as fucc because when I do bring up valid criticisms you ignore them so you can hate more.. Fucc outta here.. Nicca tearin another man down like a women and callin anyone who brings up the good and bad an apologist. Like I said look in mirror young nicca.. And if you aren’t one stop actin like it

      • Peter

        ohhh kill em…. lol

      • digitallife

        You his fan b*tch?

      • Peter

and now “its” mad at me too lmaoo…”it” puts the lotion on “it” skin and shuts the F*ck up!!

      • digitallife

Thank you for making my point for me sideline h*e

      • Peter

        ohhhh kill em…lol

      • Peter

and now “its” mad at me too lmaoo…”it” puts the lotion on “its” skin and shuts the F**k up!!

      • digitallife

Valid criticisms my @ss you would first have to know wtf you are talking about which you clearly don’t but cool…this is the same way shhh goes down no matter who criticizes this cat.

      • Celz

My bad homie next time I’ll completely agree with you

      • digitallife

Yup..it’s all good. Peace be unto you, you sound like someone with an education..I hope someday you understand what i’m getting at. I’m starting to figure until people feel it and see it they don’t get it.

      • Celz

I am educated and I do understand what you are saying. You are getting Jay-Z the man mixed up with Jay-Z’s deal with Barneys. If he is crooked this runs a bad foundation that just say that. All I’m gettin at is if Barneys was wholly racist there would probably have been more incidents than this, so overall giving the foundation more money should be a good look. BUT they both still majorly fucced up and someone needs to be fired.

Jay can do 10 maybe 100 times more than he does. But that doesn’t change the fact that he does do good shyt. He’s the only rapper (of his status) that denounced Molly in a song and raps about being faithful to his wife. So yea he has flaws, I think he fucced over niccas at Def Jam when he was Pres, all I’m saying is there is two sides to every coin. You would be doing yourself a disservice to only consider one no matter which one it is. Niccas in our position need to be paying attention so we can manuever better than he did when we are in the spotlight, just how every generation of rapper gets a little more advanced with the flow, (even though these new niccas is still ass).

      • Celz

Lol in your first comment you said the foundation should have left Barney and did business elsewhere.. I thought the foundation was a scam??

      • digitallife

If it was really about the foundation he could’ve easily found a competitor to go to..or even sold his shhh online..I can see the type of argumentative person you are….you’ll make it seem like things were meant in a way you can use them as your argument piece…

      • Celz

It doesn’t work like that.. They already had contracts I’m sure, might be clauses, might be copyrights, litigation, etc etc etc. Cancelling the deal because 2 people were harassed could easily take 4 years in court and a few hundred thousand dollars. If it was a walk away situation then yea he probably should have bounced, but big deals like that are rarely that simple to prevent people from backing out..

  • Mec-One

I bet most of you cats never even heard of Barney’s before all this …..and I bet you same cats still stroll up in Macy’s like it’s nothing when they was accused of the same thing back in 2005 ……. racism has been alive and well before the first mall was built …. hell you still got corner store owning immigrants looking at Blacks all suspect when we walk in their stores …..
Jay won cause he’s selling this expensive stuff to these cacs and making money for his foundation which is helping inner city kids …..

    • digitallife

You may want to look at the law side differences between a charity and a foundation before you start saying “it’s helping inner city kids”

      • Mec-One

What’s the big difference besides control, tax filings, and intent on how it serves the community? Would lower income, inner city students seeking higher education work better for you? smh
