Kanye West: “I Am Humbly Top 5 Of All Time: Dead Or Alive!”

(AllHipHop News) Kanye West continues to make headlines for his rants at various concert spots and now the rapper has proclaimed himself “top 5 of all time.”

West made the proclamation at the Albany, NY stop on his Yeezus Tour shouting, “I am humbly top 5 of all time: dead or alive. Let me humbly show you what I’m talking about.”

Then the rapper explained his case, revealing others that are seemingly on the same level.

“When I say genius, why is that offensive? Like I hurt somebody… Rap is all geniuses. When you go to school don’t they talk about poets, like they geniuses? What y’all witnessing; Wayne, Eminem, Drake, Jay Z, right now in front of you, doing genius work. But because we’ve got gold chains and we’ve got gold teeth they don’t wanna think we’re geniuses.”

I don’t think Kanye really knows what a genius is. That’s the only explanation I can come up with..

    • Ron

      perhaps you dont.

  • danboy1386

So if you go with a lot of people’s top 5 doa? 2 pac, BIG, nas, eminem, jay-z Who Is Kanye better than on that list? not to mention all the legends I see on other top 5 lists. KRS-1, Rakim, chuck d, scarface, ice cube, big l, big pun……….

  • Andy

4:25 “Now i got the right, to call myself whatever I want to call myself!”. Sure, call yourself a genius, doesn’t mean It’s true.

  • Chris

If you find yourself constantly having to remind people that you’re a genius, you’re probably not a genius. SMH.

Bro you just a backpackin, follow the leader type clown. You dont know shit bout real rap or hiphop just by the shit you sayin on this site. You prolly wear those little tiny pants n sag em like the rest of em

      • Black Jay

Tupac has become more of a cultural icon. Lyrically he was never a top 5. But oh well….Opinions vary.

      • Bumpy Johnson

“i hang around with the thugs and even tho they sold drugs, they showed a young brother love”

is more lyrical than 99% of punchlines and metaphors rappers wrote in history.

If i die tonight – the word pattern n word play in that..com’on chief stop smokin that wack shit

      • Obi Won

I wouldn’t say over rated but more like a positive, conscious rapping lil wayne

      • Black Jay

I would actually call him the PROTOTYPE OF WHAT AN MC IS SUPPOSED TO BE. He kept it real. He had attitude. He didn’t diss a dude he wasn’t ready to take it to the streets with.

More than anything Pac is elevated now. He’s a cultural icon. He stopped being a rapper before he died.

But as a lyricist? I stand by my words. He was overrated.

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

Pac never claim to be the best of anything. Matter of fact he probably wouldn’t respond to that. He had bigger plans, being a rapper was a means to the bigger picture he had in mind. Reaching brothers and educating them. But a lot these so call rappers pac would destroyed them with these bullshit rap song they putting out today. It wasn’t bout Fame to him.

      • Black Jay

For the most part you and I are on the same page. Like I said, he’s a cultural icon. A snap shot in time of the injustices against and contradictions of the black male. He was well beyond an MC before he died. But if we’re speaking about lyrics, he wasn’t in the top 5.

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

Yeah I agree not top 5. I just think he was beyond that. On most of his interviews he hardly ever talk about himself. He had a huge following and I think that made some people in high places nervous. But what I really like about dude was he never tried to crossover, he made them crossover to his style of music. JMO!!!

      • Black Jay

Now that’s the truth! He damn sure bent the world to his beliefs. I can’t front on that.

      • Bumpy Johnson

being a lyricist isn’t only bars n punchlines….biggie never had punchlines like that niether just straight flow…check juicey out tell me 1 punchline.

      • Black Jay

I never mentioned “punch lines”. But to judge fairly you have to take all factors into account. You can’t go ala cart and choose which factors you like and toss the rest in the garbage. For me….

        1. Content
        2. Delivery
        3. Rhyme Pattern
        4. Surprise
        5. Voice

That’s what does it for me as far as lyricists go. But everyone is different.

      • Bumpy Johnson

whatt????? did u say more of a positive conscious lil wayne???

      • Bumpy Johnson

u trippin!…HE IS THE GREATEST!! by FAR!!!

      • HipHop1980

        You don’t know hip hop.

      • Clayton Bigsby

I knew someone was going to pull Pac out of their anus.

Tupac isn’t even Top 10. He had a tremendous work ethic and was easily the greatest personality that Hip Hop ever had, but he was far from the greatest rapper. He wasn’t even a great rapper and when he was alive NO ONE EVER categorized him as such. His death immortalized him, but let’s not get it twisted about his actual lyrical ability.

And I am being real here, so get ready for my dislike quota to go up ten fold…

Tupac Shakur had FIVE words in his whole vocabulary:

‘THUG’, ‘MAMA’, ‘DRAMA’, ‘HENNESSY’ and ‘INDO’ (he sometimes would throw ‘WINDOW’ in there too, promptly after the usage of ‘indo’).

You may hit the dislike button now.

      • Bumpy Johnson

ur dumb AF…if i die to night vocab was crazy…

the fact that he is one in a few musicians let alone rapper who u listen to his songs and his words can change ur life, they can make you cry, they can just put you in a whole other world itself makes him one of the greatest musicians ever and DEFINITELY the G.O.A.T rapper

    • Black Jay

Me personally, I would remove Biggie. That’s not to say that he didn’t have serious lyrics and flow. But that’s based on him dieing at an early age. He doesn’t really have the body of work to support being placed above a Nas, Kane, or Jay Z for that matter. I’ll piss people off with that but it’s true. He died too soon.

      • Obi Won

I been saying that for years but everyone loves the Big Homie.
That’s always been a tender subject.

      • Black Jay

Oh I like his joints too. But people need to be real. You gotta go deeper than 2 albums to qualify for the greatest. That “death boost” won’t work. That’s like Eminem dieing when he made Marshal Mathers. Everyone on earth would’ve been calling him the greatest. And I would say the same thing that I’m saying now. Died too young.

      • HipHop1980

You just said it. Look at what he accomplished in such short time. He was hailed as the King of NY,Savior of East Coast Rap and one the Greatest Rappers Ever after his first LP dropped. He released only 2 Studio only albums. One is considered to be one of the Greatest Hip Hop Album ever. The other Is the Greatest Double Hip Hop Album Ever. He bought us the most succesful female MC ever lil Kim. Every single he released was an instant Classic. He made Jay Z and Diddy what they are today. I can go on and on.

      • Black Jay

You’re getting sidetracked. Just because he had two nice albums, he was still not properly represented with his body of work. I don’t know of any hip hop legend with under 3 albums that would fit into my criteria. Longevity in hip hop says a lot. Biggie had one classic album. And I know I’ll piss people off when I say this but…. Life After Death was not a classic. Absolutely not! His death helped elevate that album above what it would’ve been if he were alive. That’s not to take away from the classic songs he had on it. But that album wouldn’t make my top 20 albums of all time. No way! Album sales by no means makes an MC a top 5 greatest of all time. If that were the case, Puff would be there.
Me personally, I judge my MCs by a different set of criteria. I AM NOT SAYING THAT I AM THE DEFINITIVE AUTHORITY ON HIP HOP. I DON’T KNOW EVERYTHING. Everyone has their own criteria. But for me, this is mine (not in any particular order….)

        1. Longevity (3 or more albums)
        2. Lyrical ability (Well above average)
        3. Has the MC engaged in battle on the world stage against a worthy opponent to protect his crown?
        4. Has his product affected the culture and improved it?
        5. Does the artist have one “classic” album under his belt?

If an artist is missing any of these items, they can’t even be considered for my Top 5.

      • HipHop1980

LMAO if you say Life after Death isn’t a classic.

Give me your top 5 MC’s in order?

        Top 10 Hip hop albums?

        1. Nas
        2. Rakim (normally I wouldn’t put an artist that hasn’t battled on my list but Rakim is the obvious exception. Every rapper that came after him has elements of his style and has borrowed heavily from him and so that was taken into consideration and is the exception)
        3. Big Daddy Kane
        4. KRS One

These albums are almost impossible to rank. But these are my top 20. I’m not an expert and I don’t claim to know any more than the dude down the street. But these are my personal preferences.

      • HipHop1980

You gotta lot of work to. Also Jay z will never be better than bigge in any way. JAy z stole everything from Biggie. Biggie is the most copied Rapper of all time. Even though he was only around for such a short time. watch the link below on y.o.u.t..u.b.e

        /watch?v=U_BqLfOLnr8

      • Black Jay

I don’t think so. It’s all opinionated anyway. But this is my list. Yours may be different. But to be even more honest, I think it is impossible to have a Top 5, 10 , or even 20 at this point. Hip Hop has aged a bit and it would be pretty much impossible to put all of hip hop’s contributors in a top 20 list. I think it should probably move to a top 50 list at this point. Like I was telling one of my peeps, I could find 10 classic hip hop albums in New York alone. So it’s not really fair to the whole culture to limit the list like that.

      • HipHop1980

HIp hop has been dead for over a decade. I don’t listen to any of today’s artist or even consider them musicians.

      • Black Jay

I don’t agree with that. I’m anti-radio but there are still some artists that are putting out quality material. You just don’t hear it because the radio is controlled by the corporations now and not the DJs. But there are definitely some dope artists out now.

      • HipHop1980

        That’s the point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Bumpy Johnson

        yo where are you from?

      • Black Jay

Originally born in Jamaica but raised in Georgia, North Carolina, and Washington DC. Currently residing in DC.

    • Craig

      1. KRS ONE 2.Jay 3. 50 Cent 4.Ice Cube 5.Pac Nas and Biggie are the only competition for my list even though the other 2 are legends

      • Bumpy Johnson

good list except 50 should be the honorable mention

      • Craig

why? 50 have almost the hardest impact than all of them, KRS basically created hiphop, Jay came back and still making good stuff in his 40s and 50 shook up New York and left hits 50 created mix tapes and made them hot, G-Unit, come on now and hes an Icon around the world. Lets not forget about power of the dollar

Top 5 of what? That depends on what you’re ranking. Top 5 Producer/Rapper? Definitely! Top 5 influential hip hop artist? Definitely! Top 5 Lyricist? Get the f*ck outta here! Top 5 All Around Hip Hop Artist (sales, lyrics, affecting the culture, producer, style) definitely!

These lists are all subjective anyway. But it really depends on what your weighted scoring points are. Either way, it’s debatable. Dude “kinda” has a point.

    • Fosho3528

I just might agree with you. It’s just that he acts like such a little f*ggot it makes it really hard to appreciate and acknowledge his merits. No offense to gay people but this is the best word I could think of that describes his behavior.

      • Black Jay

Cosign! That sh*t is so f*cking annoying. I just wish he could be a humble winner. Let the body of work speak for itself. Instead that dude be annoying the sh*t outta me.

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

stop saying “Cosign” as if Ye or anybody with any talent cares what you think. You are a bird, pawn and stan. Go take some karate lessons and get shot the first time you try to use it LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn homey why bros. be tripping on you. Everytime i read your post you spit some good shit. Nigglet b just hating to be hating, and i see you never respond. That’s what separate Geto Boys from Girl.SMH!!!

      • Black Jay

Lol! Sometimes I do respond. Hahahaha…. But for the most part I try to stay away from ignorance. Some of these dudes make themselves look silly. They don’t need my help with that. But I’m assuming you’re talking about @inmadopuroz…. We’ve gotten in to it before and now I simply acknowledge him for what he is. A racist. And I don’t have any more of my time to entertain his nonsense. But sometimes it’s hard bro. Hahahahahahaha……

    • Killyoself Asap

You think that clown is a top five producer huh? You think that weak ass chipmunk shit on those old ass sampled drums is real creative huh lol? This faggot didnt even produce his last album and it still sounded n sold like shit. You just a sheep like the rest of ’em

      • Black Jay

I’d disagree homie. Without him you don’t have those Jay Z classics. Let’s not forget the work he’s done strictly as a producer. No doubt Kanye is a top 5 Producer. 100%! I’d put his catalog up against any of them.

  • I really want to like Kanye West but the more he rants the more I have a disliking for him.
The dude is probably delusional and trying to convince himself or just doing this for attention. I blame the fans that encourage him. If I was in the audience I’ll ask him to STFU and sing. LOL

    • Nana De Baus

he is smart no artist at his shows he making profits preaching

  • Obi Won

Kanye, the PEOPLE make that decision, NOT the artist. I don’t know anyone who has Kanye in the top 5. Like Drake I think two of his albums were R & B anyway.

    • Ryan Williams

I AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT DRAKE ALBUMS

    • Black Jay

In most artists’ cases I agree. But this isn’t Kanye’s first album and he’s not popping off about what he COULD do or MIGHT do. He has the body of work to intelligently argue and stand up to even the greatest. So I have to give him some respect in that regards. But all of that popping off at the mouth is annoying as f*ck. I can’t front.

      • Obi Won

Oh w/o out a doubt, its about that time for everyone to refresh their top 5 dead or alive anyway. Kanye has a catalogue of good hip hop albums. 1-3 yes sir, 808’s nah, I think people gave him a pass bc of what he’d been going through. His moms, the break up etc. and everyone has a bush album in their book. MBDTF was cool, but this Yeezus I felt like wth dude. At this rate he’s dipping into being creative which is cool, but the essence of hip hop in him is fading. To me that’s what could potentially f his top 5 slot up.

  • Jayson C Williams

He must really wanna sell tickets to his tour..

  • Jayson C Williams

80’s.. Krs, Kane, Rakim, scarface, LL
    90’s… biggie jayz & Nas, Pac Pun/Em
2000’s Kanye, Jada, Wayne, 50/TI, ross
Future 2010 on – Drake, K.Dot, Cole, big Sean (he just has bars sorry), *personally I like Nipsey Hustle (everything about him seems authentic)

    • Obi Won

I was riding with you until you had drake Cuzzo. He’s the only singer on the list

      • Jayson C Williams

Lmao aye these kids love that shit.. And though I do get depressed listening to too much of him, he does have bars. Can’t take that away from homie

      • Obi Won

Lol, u right about that one, lil homie told me Drake was the greatest ever. After I laughed I then realized he was serious. It was cool bc he was 13, He hasn’t heard nothing for real.

    • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

u came correct with the 80’s and 90’s. but then u started falling off, why you not put the Bit*h in your profile to thefront left? Lookin like Jim Jones BALLLLINNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        Lol

    • Bumpy Johnson

      2000’s- DMX, Dipset,50 cent, Eminem, n some otha guy u didn’t mention

      • Jayson C Williams

Dipset is a group. I mentioned 50. N dmx got considerably worse album after album first 1 was a classic.. 2nd was so so def not the first. And I named Em already

      • Jayson C Williams

Read it again only person I left off was dmx

    • Obi Won

I just noticed, man Face could’ve been top 5 in two of your decades 80’s & 90’s

      • Jayson C Williams

He could have.. So could hov..

    • Black Jay

Bruh…. You put Drake on your list?! How the hell can an R&B artist be an MC?

      • Jayson C Williams

He has bars bro. My comment below addressed that issue. He has hooks, his flow is consistent, you gotta give it up bro. No matter how me & you feel.. Gotta give it up, he’s nice.

      • Black Jay

I didn’t say he wasn’t nice. He has lyrics. WHEN HE CHOOSES TO ACTUALLY RAP. When R&B weighs 40% of what comes out of your mouth, you’re not an MC.

      • Obi Won

        you helped by saying 40%

      • Jayson C Williams

Well slick rick use to sing in his rhymes, more melodic, but there’s no written rule on that disqualifying him from being an MC. I don’t see nobody from hov to kanye to anyone challenging him. When you do let me know!

      • Black Jay

Bruh… You know I normally roll with you…. But did you just compare Drake to f*ckin’ Slick Rick???? For real?????

      • Jayson C Williams

No I didn’t compare the two, that was an analogy. Just proving I similarity. Stop hating on drake bro. He’s deserving for all the criticism for singing but nelly did it, j cole does it, ti’s done it, every rapper has sung on tracks pretty much.. So let’s not take away from his true talent… rapping. He’s a better rapper by far in comparison to his singing. That’s a comparison lol

      • Black Jay

Oh…. Okay….. Hahahaha…. I damn near dropped my laptop on the ground. Lol!

I see what you’re saying bro but I think you’re very wrong. Drake is good but to call him an MC is offensive to those that have come before him. Hell, he won’t even battle a dude that called him out by name. That alone is sacrilegious to the art form. Imagine Kane not going at nobody. Imagine MC Lyte not battling. Imagine KRS or MC Shan not mixing it up. Common and Ice Cube, Nas and Jigga…. There’s a rich history to the battle. And for him to p*ssy out and refuse but instead sing some songs? Come on. That in itself should be enough to suspend his MC status.

Nah dude. He ain’t in nobody’s top 5 until he earns it (at least not mine). On the real? I probably pick 50 Cent over him. Even at this point in 50’s career. I’m not impressed with Drake at all.

      • Jayson C Williams

Think top 5 rappers and top 5 mc’s are two different discussions. But just because you battle another rapper doesn’t make you an MC.. Is big not an MC? He never battled anyone! Or named Nas, Raekwon, or Pac by name. So I think your argument is a little flawed. PAC had the best diss of my generation but was he an mc? No he wasn’t and to say he is, is sort not being honest.

      • Black Jay

Sorry to do this to you bruh but Big did go at Nas. As far as him being in my top 5, I piss people off with this constantly but….. He’s not in my top 5. He was a dope MC and could’ve made it there but he died too soon. You gotta have the body of work available to judge. 2 albums ain’t enough.

      • Jayson C Williams

Name the song track and album he said nas’s name? Kick in the door was nameless.. And we disagree again because body of work will leave NAS out of most top 5 that’s why I left dmx out.

      • Black Jay

I don’t think “Kick In The Door” is speculation any more. Nas has openly admitted that the record was about him. Name or not, it was for Nas. And I think Nas would know better than most people.
And what do you mean “body of work would leave Nas out”? You’re trippin’! Talk to anybody and most people will tell you that Nas chose wack producers. But NOBODY will say that lyrically Nas is subpar. On almost all of his albums his lyrics are straight dope. We’re talking about lyrics, not producing or album sales. In my opinion nobody can out MC Nas. And that’s straight fact.

      • Jayson C Williams

Yea but we disagree you talking bodies of work.. Producing or not, if the music is wack or subpar in nas’s case than u can’t just disregard it. Facts are he has four good to great albums.. And the last 2 I can only get with a few songs. Honestly speaking Nas is my favorite rapper but I’m not partial ain’t no exception to any rules only if you’re dead! Pun was an MC.. But had mediocre albums

      • Black Jay

Name one legendary MC that didn’t have a wack album. They all have them. Jigga had his. Rakim had his. Nas had his. They all have wack albums. If you’re in the game long enough you’re going to put out a dud. But lyrically? Nas has no equal. You may get into bodies of work but how many classic albums has he dropped? I count two. How many classics has Jay dropped? I count two. I just think that a lot of people have it twisted. Nobody’s talking about album sales. But people bought into that TAKEOVER bomb that Jay dropped. But truth be told? Nas and Jay are almost neck and neck in terms of body of work accomplishments.
But if we talking body of work, like you just said, Drake isn’t even on your list (according to your own criteria). He doesn’t have a classic yet. Zero. How can he be a top 5 with no classic under his belt???
We can agree to disagree on this one homie. Drake is on your list. He’s not even top 20 on mine.

      • Black Jay

For the record…. This is my criteria. I’m not saying that I know everything or that people should use what I use. But this is how I rank my MCs….

Obviously this doesn’t mean that every rapper that has this will get on my list. But to even go into consideration you have to have these as an entrance to my top 5. Not saying I know everything. This is just what I use.
