Memphis Bleek Discusses Starting Jay Z/Nas Battle

(AllHipHop News) The epic battle between Jay Z and Nas will undoubtedly go down in Hip Hop history as one the culture’s greatest lyrical rivalries. While most fans know about the classic diss tracks “Takeover” and “Ether,” many may not be aware the entire situation was sparked by Jay’s right-hand man Memphis Bleek.

Bleek spoke with VladTV about the Jay-Nas battle. According to the Brooklyn rapper, he mistakenly took lines from Nas as shots at him, and his decision to respond caused everything to explode after that.

“I started that drama. I felt like I got my big homie in some s**t,” says Bleek. “Nas had did a freestyle on the [DJ] Clue tape, and my homie hit me like, ‘Yo, Nas getting at you on this joint.'”

That perceived diss led to his own song “Mind Right” going at Nas. The Queensbridge emcee then responded with another freestyle calling out the entire Roc-A-Fella crew which brought Jay into the fray.

While Bleek accepts the blame for launching the feud on wax, he believes Jay’s “Takeover” was a better record than “Ether.” When Vlad points out that he and Schoolboy Q have publicly stated they enjoyed “Takeover” more than “Ether,” Bleek agrees.

“Anybody that listens to facts would. ‘Ether’… I’m not going to say it was a bad record. It was dope, but all that s**t was just fake s**t,” states Bleek. “He didn’t say no facts in that song. That’s why I can’t hold it up there against ‘Takeover.’ ‘Takeover’ was factual.”

The longtime Jay Z associate does acknowledge his opinion on the matter is biased.

“You think you’re going to really get me to be like Nas killed my big homie. I don’t give a f**k if he did. You ain’t never going to hear that from my mouth,” adds Bleek.

    • Casor_G

Yep. Half the isht Jay was saying wasn’t factual either. Plus who knows how much of NAs’ lyrics were true. All Jay did was clown him because he was knocking Nas’ girl. In my eyes, most hoes in the rap game are freaking multiple dudes like super head anyway.

But Jay’s money is growing fast, Meaning his career wasn’t damaged, And before you say anything else, That’s what all these rappers want is MONEY, Point Blank, Period!

      • Jared

I feel you bro but I’m talking about rap and lyrics. Neither of their money does nothing for me. Their music does.

      • Raheem Classick

(Neither of their money does nothing for me. Their music does.) Word” Then check out my big post at the top.

      • Slick Blak

Dude you sucking jay off? It was never about money Nas was comfortable with 10 mill cause you can get girls with out it now Jay need over 100 mil to make a chic forget he looks like that…shit he needed a few thousands to fix his grill. Jay sounded like he wanted to CRY on Hot 97 after B. Nas shrugged off Takeover if it hurt he sure hid it better than Jay emotional ass.

      • Spirit Equality

It took Nas three months to respond to Takeover. I’d say that’s a good indicator of how much impact it had on him. Jay dropped Super Ugly, what, a week or so after Ether came out? Nas said his mother was dying of cancer at the time, but Q-Tip’s father died while he was making Low End Theory, he didn’t put the album on hold for three months.

      • JLAWES

I am sure if your momma was dying you would put that on hold to respond to a diss record. Dude stop it. There comes a time when you just stop. You keep on referencing Jay sales. Well a lot more people bougt Jay records # Facts, Well a lot more people thought Nas won # Facts,,

      • Raheem Classick

Slick Blak, With your ole emotional ass.

Because one of the purposes of A battle is to crush your opponent and make his fans yours. Clearly that didn’t happen.

he know damn well he felt sleepy just like jay did when he heard ether

  • thats just loyalty talking… not common sense.
on some “I dont care if my man right or wrong.. Im riding with him!”
well ur mans is wrong, but play ur part.

  • Carlos

The thing with Ether is that it is a good song all around, what i mean is that Nas not onlyh went hard but made it into an album song that doesnt feel like filler, Jay went hard on Takeover but the things he said were in bad taste, imo. I disagree with Bleek, Nas said some factual shit. So to the public Ether is better, but on a personal Jay and Nas level, i bet Nas felt that shit in his heart when he heard takeover.

    • FRUKOH

      Too many facts in Ether:

      slowly loading up this ammo
To explode it on a camel

When KRS already made an album called Blueprint
First, Biggie’s ya man, then you got the nerve to say that you better than Big

Were you abused as a child, scared to smile, they called you ugly?
What you think, you getting girls now ’cause of your looks?

Rockefeller died of AIDS, that was the end of his chapter
And that’s the guy y’all chose to name your company after?
Put it together, I rock hoes, y’all rock fellas

Ne-gro please You no mustache having, with whiskers like a rat
      Compared to Beans you wack

And your man stabbed Un and made you take the blame
You ass, went from Jaz to hanging with Caine, to Herb, to Big
And, Eminem murdered you on your own shit

You a dick-riding faggot, you love the attention
Queens niggas run you niggas, ask Russell Simmons

Shawn Carter to Jay-Z, damn you on Jaz dick
How much of Biggie’s rhymes is gonna come out your fat lips?
Wanted to be on every last one of my classics
You pop shit, apologize, nigga, just ask Kiss

NO WONDER JAY Z was nearly crying on Hot 97 after Ether came out! lolol

      • Raheem Classick

Yeah, You don’t know any better.

      • FRUKOH

        tfoh p***y!

      • Raheem Classick

        Feelings” LOL!!!!!!!

      • Spirit Equality

Most of what you posted were lies or errors
        1) Nas never loaded up ammo to explode on anybody at the Roc LOL. Nas has never even been seen with a gun in public (i.e. not in Belly LMAO), to his credit, this makes him smarter than all the rappers who caught gun charges.
        2) This is one of the few facts, about KRS/BDP having the Blueprint title first. One of the hardest lines in Ether because it was true.
        3) This “abused as a child” BS is totally made up. WTF? Pointing out that Jay is ugly is like saying water is wet, not the most creative dis.
        4) Rockefeller didn’t die of AIDS, Rock Hudson did, one of the most egregious errors in Ether.
        5) Jay has no mustache, true. Compared to Beanie, Jay is…still good. No one on earth compares Jay to Beans and says Jay is wack.
        6) No one has ever said Jay didn’t stab Un other than Nas. And a guy with Jay’s money would never have pled guilty to stabbing Un if somebody else did it. You sound retarded repeating that and so did Nas for saying it in the first place. Nobody said Em murdered Jay on Renegades until *after* Ether came out. Read every 2001 record review of The Blueprint, no critic ever said this anywhere. For my money, Eminem rhymed slightly better, but killed Jay? Pshaw. The fact that you spelled Kane’s name wrong here hurts your credibility in any hip-hop discussion.
        7) The story about Jay’s name involves the J and Z subway lines. That’s too terrible to make up. LOL @ Nas saying “every one of my classics” when up to 2001, his only undisputed classic was “Illmatic” (and I doubt Jay was clamoring to appear on “I Am” LMAO). Took a couple of years before people credited “It Was Written” as a classic, for years it was considered a letdown/commercial sellout post-Illmatic. The line about Jay quoting too much Big is the other great line on this song, because it’s also true.
All you did was hurt Nas’ case by quoting lines with that many inaccuracies.

      • adam pitterson

        1) Its called a metaphor…..
        2) This is one of the few facts, about KRS/BDP having the Blueprint title first. One of the hardest lines in Ether because it was true.
        3) IDK where you from but everyone knows Jay got played for being ugly when he was younger. As well as the terrible way he treated women back in the day…
        4) LMAO…Rocafella was a legendary hustler in Jay-Z’s old hood in the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, and he died of AIDS around the time when it was a epidemic…so again…youre grossly uninformed.
5)Youre looking at things from a 2014 perspective, at the time, Beans was the hardest and considered one of the best Lyricists on the Roc.
6)Peep the history, that whole thins was BS. Un even went on record that if it had gone to court he wouldve left the country or testified in Jays favor. And again, youre crazy if you dont think people thought Em outshined Jay at the time. When Renegrade dropped it was a big moment that everyone was paying attention to…and most thought Em killed it and Jay was just aiight…
        7) Again, youre wrong…Jay’s first name on the streets was Jazzy, which he changed to Jayz to salute Jaz-O. and you can LOL, but I guess you forget that It Was Written was a #1 on Billboard, The Firm #1 on Billboard, I am #1 on Billboard, Nastradamus slumped to #2…all of these were pre Ether. Nas was killing the game despite your revisionist history lesson…lol..I think you should brush up on facts before you talk about credibilty….

      • Spirit Equality

        1) Nas was NOT using “loading up ammo” as a metaphor. It’s not like he said “this song is lyrical ammunition” or some s–t like that. Stop. It was a literal threat to load bullets in guns. A threat he had no intention of ever carrying out and, thus, not a fact.
        2) Why did you repeat what I said in point 2 like you had a new point? LOL.
        3) I was referring to Nas’ nonsensical claim that Jay was abused as a child and noting that calling Jay ugly is not a creative dis. Your response addressed none of that. Please read closely before responding.
        4) Roc-A-Fella Records is named after John D. Rockefeller, so you’re grossly misinformed. Go to Google books and you’ll find more than one Jay-Z biography saying so. Who do you believe, a biographer who does research or someone on the Internet making up s–t? LMAO.
        5) You’re making up fairy tales again. I was heavy into rap at that time. At the time, Beans was Jay’s little man. No one in that era heard a song with Beans and Jay on it and said “Beans is great, he makes Jay look wack”. LMAO.
        6) LOL @ “peep the history”. Jay pled guilty. Millionaires don’t plead guilty to protect their hanger-ons. What planet were you born on? There is a difference between outshined (did better) and “killed” (utterly destroyed on your own song, like Canibus used to do to people in 97). No one said that pre-Ether. Hit up Google and try to find a 2001 Blueprint record review that says “The best rapping on The Blueprint was done by Eminem, who totally killed this Jay-Z guy”. LMAO! You can’t, because that wasn’t the critical consensus at the time, pre-Ether, period.
        7) Jazzy was Jay’s old nickname, but Jay-Z was a name constructed based on the J and Z lines, both of which ran near where he grew up. Don’t believe me, read “Empire State of Mind”. The point is, Jay didn’t make up the name Jay-Z out of nowhere just to give props to Jaz-O, if anything, he added the hyphen probably to give props to Jaz-O, but it’s not like he went through life as Shawn, met Jaz-O, and made up Jay-Z out of whole cloth just to imitate Jaz. As for Nas’ post-Illmatic/pre-Stillmatic records, it doesn’t matter what those records were selling, none of them were considered classics at the time. Illmatic got 5 mics. The Firm album, I believe, got 3 1/2. That’s pretty far from a classic rating, bro. Not to mention that The Firm isn’t even a Nas album it was a group record with Nas, AZ, Foxy and the perenially overlooked Nature. LMAO.
I think YOU should brush up on YOUR facts before you talk at all.

      • adam pitterson

Ok….please tell me where there were any physical threats from Nas or Jay at that time…Just because you decided to take it literal doesnt mean that was the intent of the lyric. NO ONE WAS GOING TO DIE FROM THIS.

If you didnt know Jay was picked on as a kid, thats on you. But that was what Nas was referring to.

First off, Jay wasnt this multimillionaire at the time, so lets drop that. Secondly, the name of the label was a nod to a famous Brooklyn drug dealer named Rocafella who Jay-Z idolized as a young hustler….who died of AIDS. This is only the truth…or do you need footnotes for verification?
As heavy as you were into rap, you didnt know that people thought that Beans was a dope rapper? Further more, that line in Ether was just opinion. And despite your ” rap heaviness” at the time, a lot of people did and still do think Beans is nice. Considering their lyrical content at the time, depending on your tastes, an argument can be made.
Jay plead guilty based on what had gone on with Puff at the time. And all you are doing is arguing semantics, outshined vs killed….lets see which one of those would sound better in a battle rap….and Em outshined you on ya own shit….LMAO.
So, all of your classics are judged by the Source? If we go by that logic than both Jay and Nas only have two classic albums. So maybe Jay did wanna be on ALL two of them…so once again…Facts are Facts…which is all Im bringing..
Lastly, I see that comprehension is your strong suit. When I said first name, I meant what he would orignally go by. I didnt know that I had to break that down for you. I know youre smarter than that…

      • Raheem Classick

You’re out gas, I respect your opinion on you saying Nas is better, But I don’t respect anyone trying to down another artist to make their favorite artist look good.

      • adam pitterson

I didnt down any artist at all. Please point it out if I did…

      • Raheem Classick

        My bad Adam, Wrong person.

      • adam pitterson

        All good

      • Spirit Equality

        1) The point was, Nas wasn’t speaking metaphorically, so saying he was “loading up the ammo” ready to do anything is the opposite of a fact.
        2) I didn’t say Jay was a “multi” millionaire either, I said he was a millionaire. Seriously, read more carefully. If you’re arguing that Jay had a net worth of less than $1 million in 2001, you’re hilariously wrong. By that point, he had been headlining tours for at least 3 years, was getting money from Roc-A-Fella and had been a multi-platinum artist for three years (not to mention the publishing money he was making from his ghostwriting).
Also, I never said Beans wasn’t dope, I said saying “comparing to Beans, you’re wack” is an absurd opinion that only Nas held in 2001. Challenge me and find a reviewer from the time, any record reviewer who said “Beanie Sigel is so good, he makes Jay-Z look wack”. That is a hilarious lie that no one believed in 2001.
I think if you say you’re bringing facts, you should be able to cite objective sources. If The Source isn’t enough for you, try to find *any* magazine that rated The Firm album higher than Illmatic. You won’t, because none did.
I deal in facts and can back them up with sources.
You deal with hearsay that you can’t back up with anything.
With that said, back up and back down. LOL.

side note: Nas’ two five mic albums are Illmatic and Stillmatic. Since we both know Jay didn’t ask to be on Stillmatic, what are you talking about when you say Jay wanted to be on “ALL two of them”? Get your facts straight.

      • EL_BARK

Um ur wrong thinking it rocafella was name after rocksfeller
It was named after the dude roc,

      • Raheem Classick

      • Raheem Classick

Thats good, But jay is still here.

  • Black Jay

Any hip hop dude knows good and damn well that Jay got roasted with that Ether joint. I mean, it pulled some serious emotional sh*t outta Jay and forced him to release that weak ass response to Ether. That response clearly showed who crushed who. I’ll give Jay points. That Takeover track was a dope diss and would’ve killed almost any other MC in the game at that time. But Ether would kill any MC at any moment in hip hop history. It was that lethal. Hands down, the dopest diss record of all time.

Oh I don’t hate you for your beliefs. But I like women. Why do you keep stalking me? What’s up with you? Gay as sh*t. But it’s okay. Live your homosexual life. Just keep that sh*t over there.

Even if I was gay you still would be scared because I keep checking you (checkers) after all tou thinking you smarter than me( chess) but little do you know I been on something totally different. Go ahead and insert some gay joke next or try to flip what I just stated . I’ll wait!!! (Will wonka meme pose)

@Inmadopuroz, superh8 , and @Qudus….(All 3 of these profiles created by one person to STALK GROWN ASS MEN)…

I don’t know dude…. You went from one sentence to a long ass paragraph. Whose getting emotional, you or me? Hahahahaha….

Look I have no problem with any man living their life the way that they want to. You’ve already admitted you were a homosexual. No problem. Keep doing your thing. BUT WHEN YOU TURN YOUR HOMOSEXUALITY INTO BLATANTLY STALKING GROWN MEN, don’t get mad when someone calls you out on it. We like p*ssy over here. It’s not my fault you don’t. Just admit what the obvious point is. You’re gay and YOU’RE MAD THAT SOMEONE IS PLAYING CHESS ON YOUR SILLY ANTICS. Really…. How long do you think you can chase men on this site and nobody would pick up that you’re a homosexual? You’re playing yourself.

You’ve already put the gun in your own mouth and pulled the trigger. The only thing left to do is clean up the brains. Go ahead and sign off and MAKE THE AHH PLEDGE: YOU WILL NEVER STALK ANOTHER GROWN ASS MAN AS LONG AS YOU LIVE. Say that and stay the f*ck away from me and I MIGHT let you live. Otherwise you get your skull blown the f*ck off with your brains all over this site everyday until I get tired. Knowledge kills dumb n*ggas like you all day long. Hahahahahahaha…..

I seriously think dude is Gay. Lol! I’m joking a little but mostly I think it’s true. Look at his actions….

I’ve informed him that I’m a straight male and I like p*ssy only. But
he won’t quit with the fandom. He’s the only dude on this whole site
(other than his aliases) that chase dudes to comment. WE’RE TALKING A
GROWN ASS MAN CHASING OTHER GROWN MEN ON THIS SITE. He doesn’t comment
about any subject. He just goes at men.

In my opinion he’s gay. Maybe he hasn’t come out of the closet
(which would explain him creating 3 different profiles to stalk dudes). I
told him today that I thought he was a homosexual. He utilizes various
aliases to try to talk to me. For the most part I’ve ignored dude. But
today I told him my true opinion. I hope he catches on.

It’s kinda funny but it’s also very stupid. He’s a man. What does he
think other men will think of him if he has this stupid habit of chasing
        men online? Lol!

Like I said, my intellect is far beyond what you’re accustomed to. Beg for mercy. Or I’ll just keep opening that chest up with buck shot and exposing your frail ass heart. Lol!

I know you’re gay but for the last time. I am a heterosexual. I like women. You like men. Keep that sh*t over there. I mean if you check the viciousness, hit em up can’t even compete. As a matter of fact Common’s “B*tch in you” can’t even come close. To me the closest is “No Vaseline”. But even at that, Nas’s attack was so personal and so demeaning that it stands the test of times as the best diss record. I mean he went at every aspect of Jigga. Everything. That’s unheard of in a battle.

I think they’re two of the greatest MC’s ever to do it. It’s a really tough call. Jay roasted the sh*t out of a bunch of people on Takeover. That song was more about Jay flexing than it was about anyone else. That’s why it was so dope. Jay was just basically taking a giant dump on the game with that song. Kanye’s unbelievable Door’s sample was ridiculous too. Ether was a great song however it was completely about and responding to Jay and Jay only. He murdered and embarrassed him on that song though. Total David and Goliath situation. I get how it’s easy to hate on Jay because he’s NEVER been the underdog but it’s a really tough call. Song for song I’m still gonna take the Takeover.

    • dee

“Ether was a great song however it was completely about and responding to Jay and Jay only.” ….. Thats what a diss record is about aiming at your target

  • ursocalledgod

Nas is the first and only rapper to make Jay-Z feel unsure about himself. Had Jay-Z on Hot 97 damn near cryin’ and sh*t, like his doctor just told him he had three months to live. I couldn’t believe that this was the same confident and cocky Jay-Z when I heard him on the radio that day.

  • Raheem Classick

After the battle In 2002 Jay-Z and Nas dropped more music, Nas put out > God’s Son & The Lost Tapes,(Both together sold Platinum) Jay-Z put out > The Blueprint 2 : The Gift & The Curse (Sold 3X Platinum) If your ask me Jay-Z gained more fans, If people want to say that Nas is A better artist or is more lyrical, I do not have A problem with that, Because that’s A person’s opinion, And I respect that, So don’t disrespect mine.
Three of Jay-Z albums, Reasonable Doubt (1996), The Blueprint (2001), and The Black Album (2003), are considered landmarks in the genre with all of them featured in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, Nas is also on the list too. Jay-Z is recognized as the 88th greatest artist of all time by Rolling Stone. Remember, No artist gets into the Rap game just to Rap, Its A business, And that means making money. (I think I’ve said enough)

    • Super_Hero

Rolling Stone’s list. That is where you get your hip hop. stop it. Yeah, Rap became a business when dudes like you look at Rolling Stones for hip hop.

      • Raheem Classick

You read what you want > Nas is also on the list too.

    • adam pitterson

Your point is understood, but nobody was discussing business. We are discussing the actual lyrics..

      • Raheem Classick

I guess you haven’t read all the other stuff people posted, But I digress, If you wanna say that Nas is A better artist or is more lyrical, I do not
        have A problem with that, Because that’s A person’s opinion, And I
respect that, And so we can agree to disagree.

    • Thomas Wrencher

You are right on some things. Hip Hop is a culture that’s in the music business, but the business does not dictate what the culture is. The people do that. So nobody that knows about hip hop will ever let album sales be a criteria on judging who is the best. If you think it matters then you know nothing about the music or culture. Rolling Stone knows nothing about the music or culture. Jay will never be better than Nas and never was. Nelly sold more records than anyone except Jay, 2pac, Em, Beastie Boys, and Outkast. Do you really think Nelly is better than Nas, Biggie, Big Pun, etc? Hell no… album sales mean absolutely nothing.

      • Raheem Classick

Me showing that Jay-Z sold 2X as many records as Nas did is me saying that alot of people must feel that Jay-Z is A good artist, And also from the post you quoted from > If people want to say that Nas is A better artist or is more lyrical, I
do not have A problem with that, Because that’s A person’s opinion, And I
respect that, So don’t disrespect mine.

      • Thomas Wrencher

I respect your opinion. I’m just giving you the truth on this music. Sales mean nothing at all so you can’t go by record sales. Most of the people who buy rap albums are people OUTSIDE of the culture, lil suburban white kids who really know nothing about it. If we make sales a criteria for who is good, then we are basically saying lil suburban teens tell us who is good or not. Sales do not mean that you are good at all (not saying Jay isn’t good, he is a legend). This article is about the BATTLE between Jay and Nas. Battles are judged entirely on lyrics, not sales, so it is no reason to even bring it up.

      • Raheem Classick

I feel that Jay-Z won the Battle & War, Thats my opinion, We are finished, Thanks Bro”.

      • Thomas Wrencher

Get that weak ish outta here. “We are finished…” lol… smh. Thats the same attitude that got Jay murked!!

    • JLAWES

NAS WON! I can understand if JAY is you favorite artist but every poll that was ever taken have NAS winning by a land slide JAY cried when he went to hot 97 with Angie (google it). Jay was hot and feeling his self NAS momma was sick and he was not on the scene, it was a smart move by Jay but he lost. Listen to silent ETHER
(LAST REAL N IGGER ALIVE on GOD SON).

      • Raheem Classick

You mean every poll on the internet ? Heres the deal, You say Nas won, I say Jay won, Lets agree to disagree.

      • JLAWES

Jay said Nas won… lol Watch the MTV interview. LOL

      • Raheem Classick

If its true, That’s his opinion, I still say Jay-Z won, Thats what I believe, That’s my opinion, Case closed.

      • JLAWES

Let me translate…. JAY dick is mine and mine alone lol…. I don’t care how much baby mama he has lol

Its always these keyboard kats that think they know everything, Look, If Nas your favorite artist then kool, But you the same kats who also be saying Big Pun hit Jay-Z with A bottle, And still no proof, Y’all just A bunch of kats that be reaching”

  • Bleeks line was “ball til’ you fall…..”, then Nas came with “you wana ball til you fall I can help you with that”, Jay also had a line “who’s the best emcee Biggie JayZ or Nas”. Then Nas came with “who’s the best emcee, there aint no best…” then came the war. I still think Nas won no doubt.

  • RazaBladeKing

I swear you Mr. Knowles fans are the worst. Livin in a fantasy world where Mr. Knowles can do no wrong… it’s like he saved your cat from a burnin house or something.

    Facts:
-Nobody says “You got Takeover’d”. You got “ETHERED.” People without their head in Jay-Z’s rectum know who won that battle… it became a verb.
    -Eminem bodied Jay on “Renegade”
-Bun-B bodied Jay on “Big Pimpin”, to the point that Jay added verse 4 to the radio/video edit to try and compensate
-T.I. bodied Jay, Kanye, AND Wayne on “Swagga Like Us.” Period.
-“Get Rich or Die Tryin” sales > any Jay-Z album sales
-“The Massacre” sales > any Jay-Z album sales
-hell, The Game’s “The Documentary” > any Jay-Z album sales

    Best Rapper Alive. Sure.

    • EL_BARK

Um the takeover was a concept diss record….

Them focal point of the song was him and his crew was running the industry and he shetted on Queensbridge pride and joy and diss. The shet out of them..
I mean takeover was a i diss your hood & only had one verse geared towards nas.
When ether was strictly going at jay.

If u from ny you know they take their hood pjs serious.
He smash they hood in one track…..

A lot of nas shet in ether was not factual, but it was hot cause nas hadnt had a hot track in a while, and everybody counted him out….

Over all the takeover was better only cause he diss the shet out of qb finest,
He took on on they whole hood…. Expose them nigga

I dont care if u mobb deep i hold triggers to crews u little fuk
      Straight disrespectful…

      • RazaBladeKing

No doubt Jay rode on QB’s best and brightest. Most would agree Prodigy got it the worst out of everybody. None of that is relevant.

Bottom line, head-to-head, nothin Jay did could touch “Ether.” He got “Ethered.” [he was the first] That’s how the battle went.

    • Celz

#1 People still say “We don’t believe you you need more people”
#2 Jay murdered Eminem on Renegade thoroughly. It’s hard for niccas that don’t rap to see the differences. Eminem had the better flow because his subject matter was more general and he based what he said off his rhyme patterns. Jay’s verse was deeper and discussed his own emotional issues and bigger societal issues. Em just ranted on how people say he cusses too much. No contest.

The rest of your points are irrelevant and sound emotional. They have nothing to do with the topic. Jay has the largest body of work bar none I can find plenty of bad verses and fucc ups. Like when he said Armadale Vodka was 40 proof.

Jay is the GOAT but I’d rather fucc wit Nas on a day to day

      • RazaBladeKing

“The rest of your points are irrelevant and sound emotional” followed by “Jay is the GOAT.” Slurp, slurp. Take your feelings out of this, and “use your braaaaaain.” Your #1 point is decent, but a few one-liners don’t overrule an entire song for song debate (see my #1 point). As for your 2nd point, I do rap, and I saw the difference… to say Jay thoroughly murdered Eminem on Renegade goes against the overwhelming majority opinion, but no surprise from someone who thinks “Jay is the GOAT.” Em’s content was more basic and general, but his rhyme schemes were more intricate and complex. I brought up those other “irrelevant” points to counter your fellow Jay-z d-riders who bring up his money/plaques/etc as if they mean anything to the battle that the majority say he lost. Decisively. Perception = reality.

      • Boston80sbaby

Although it’s much closer than people give it credit for, Em got Jay on Renegade.

      • Celz

Look at the subject matter.. Jay was operating at a much deeper level. If you break the verses down Jay’s subject matter dictates what words he uses. Eminem let’s the words he uses dictate his subject matter.. Big difference, that’s why Em is flowing better he’s spitting about a broader topic while Jay is telling a story that relates to his theme.

  • EL_BARK

Lol that shet started on nas i am album
He took a shot a jay on we will survive “and these niggas is wrong using u name in vein and he claims to be new york king its not about that”

Jay resoonded on bleek album that came a few months later
On “what u think of that,” the verse he shetted on nas,

I know this niggas not trying to get down or something try to play me like a clown or something,
Running round here fronting l my shet dont sound like nothing?
    Like i aint got”the crown or something”…….
Like i aint the niggah u based ur life on, guess i aint the reason u got that ice on,
Like i aint 5 mill and what did ur joint go.
Excuse. Me niggah dont confuse me.

Nas aint diss bleek on a freestyle its was on nastradamus
He took the hook from what u think of that and told bleek he was going to pop one in his hat,
That bleek was none fir always wearing and rapping about.

U want encore yall should welcome me back
    > u want to ball to u fall< bleek hook "i can help u with that"
U want beef i can let a slug melt in ur hat "

Also jay sneak diss in mariah heartbreaker video,
He stole nas scarface scence from the world is yours, and was talking slick about carmen in his first, she want ride wit jay stay fly with jay… Nobody didnt know though or most didnt know he was baiting nas…

    Bleek responded with mind right,
Then nas fire back on the qb2000

Walls come down, jaws will get broke < a diss to mack,
    Ur whole crew coffing bound
    Ur man = bleek
    Ur hoe= amil
    Ur lietiant= beans
    Ur boss = dame
    will get found. Lol

After that, it was summer jam and the rest was history.

  • ANDRE SALAZAR

The fact that people think Nas won that battle says a lot about the type of people listening to hip-hop 10 years ago. Nas was always the butt-hurt clown who’s head was too big for his shoulder’s going up against Jay’s flawless record of dominance. So it was NO surprise when J crushed him & ended-up being Nas’ boss in the end. Takeover is easily > Ether, simply because one is true & the other is butt-hurt whining! #reality

check out the hot97 interview the day after jay got ethered, or check the blueprint 2 title track. he basically says nas got him. of course if you don’t know hip hop you wouldn’t understand it…

    • Raheem Classick

I agree with you 100%, But get ready for the Noisy Nas Army, They will not let facts get in the way of their hatred for Jay-Z.

      • Bryant D Neal Sr

Well there is a lot of Noisy Nas Army people out there look at the voting not only now but back then. You would think if Jay was more popular he would win that vote? Fact of the matter is that Ether was better the music proves it.

      • Celz

We talkin music or lyrics? Who gives a fucc if the song was better or harder. Niccas is emcees the lyrics are all that matters period.

    • Celz

“1 was “nah,” the other was Illmatic
      That’s a one-hot-album-every-10-year average
      And that’s so (lame)
      Nigga, switch up your flow
      Your shit is garbage
What you trying to kick, knowledge?”

That pretty much did it. Plus Takeover was 1st and it was 1 verse compared to 3.5-4 verses of material. Jay killed him off short and sweet then moved on to the next target.

  • Obi Won

“You think you’re going to really get me to be like Nas killed my big homie. I don’t give a f**k if he did. You ain’t never going to hear that from my mouth”
Basically!! WTH would Bleek say Nas Killed Jay?

Nas sh!tted on 50 on “Queens Get the Money” almost as bad as he sh!tted on Jigga…. and he only gave 50 a few bars. Ether>Takeover and also Ether>every Bleek song and album.

  • Brindle

what else he gonna say? Ether was deeper, so you gonna get the more continuous and righteous cats, Nas when in on Jays morals and willingness to buffoon himself for money but it worked for jay if $ is what’s important, he no longer has to buffoon himself other than kissing up to jews in every other song… Jay came with the take over and it was more street and aggressive… I personally liked Ether the best, somethen got to be said about a person that will challenge you with out trying to intimidate you… means they got no fear of the outcome… GAME BRED

  • King Kredible

It’s 2014 and this is still an issue? C’mon now, you can’t rewrite history. What Bleek and Jay need to realize is that the fact Nas murdered him is a credit to his success. It’s one thing to be on top, but to get knocked down and get BACK on top is what makes legends, and BOTH Nas and Jay-Z have that on their resumes.

    • Jayson C Williams

Lol well put. Did u see the voting? Landslide

      • superh8

Yea, out of ur stretcht out sloppy pussy.nasty ho

    • King Kredible

Not to mention that Supaugly was a ho ass record and took away points from Takeover.

  • justmathoughts

the term “ethered” was dubbed from this battle of tracks but takeover was better? that dont make sense

    • Celz

It’s the same as people saying LL beat Canibus. If you check the lyrics Canibus murdered him. But if you goin off the beat and ferocity then yea maybe you can come to a different conclusion but if niccas is emcees then lyrics is the only thing that matters.. 4 albums in 10 years nicca I can divide.. Stop it, that destroyed everything Jay broke him down into atoms.. And I love Nas I’d want to hang with Nas over Jay any day of the week..

      • justmathoughts

jays actually my favorite rapper so i didnt really want to but since were quoting ill sum it up like this, “i get it you biggie and hes puffy”, “foxy got you hot cause you kept your face in her puss, what you think you gettin girls now cause of ya looks? negro please, you no mustache havin wit whiskers like a rat, compared to beans you wack, and ya man stabbed un and made you take the blame, you ass, went from jaz to hangin with kane to irv to big and eminem murdered you on your own shit” facts only right, there a lot more too

130 comments deep and counting. Interestingly, 13 odd years after the fact, this debate is as heated as ever.

I recall Dart Adams aka ‘PD’ (Poisonous Dart), the author of ‘Poisonous Paragraphs’ on AHH back in the day broke down this battle line for line, bar for bar and it was an interesting read, I can’t seem to find it anywhere on the net. I’ll send him a mail to ask if he still has it somewhere in his archive and see if I can share it if he does. It is a must read, a very insightful piece.

But I do recall sending him a mail a few years back asking, “What makes a diss a good diss?

And his response was and I quote:

“1. If the listening audience has an overwhelming response to it. (If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it…who the hell cares?)

    2. If the subject of the diss is hurt/affected by it (Jay was really affected by Nas’ Ether) Nas won Jay’s undying respect…I think Jay NEEDED Nas to come back (plus, let’s be real…Jay is a Nas fan).”

…make of that what you will but it doesn’t get any clearer than these 2 points above.

  • GQ

I support both Jay and Nas. Jay is my favorite of all time, but Ether hit a lil harder than Takeover.

  • superh8

Bleek,, u need more ppl.u just a tax write off so u gotta say that

  • Willie Stewart II

Bleek can ride Jay’s dick all he wants but Nas made the word ether synonymous with verbally killin a nigga. That’s how bad he owned Jay on that record. And no facts on the record? How’s this for facts

“In 88 you was gettin chased through your buildin, Called at my crib and ain’t even give you my number.”

“I still whip your ass, you thirty-six in a karate class”

“You no mustache having, with whiskers like a rat”

“How much of Biggies rhymes is gone come out yo fat lips?”

“And your man stabbed Un and made you take the blame You ass, went from Jaz to hanging with Kane, to Herb, to Big”

“KRS already made an album called Blueprint First, Biggie’s ya man, then you got the nerve to say that you better than Big Dick sucking lips, why don’t you let the late, great veteran live”

“Wearing Jaz chains, no tecs, no cash, no cars No jail bars Jigga, no pies, no case Just Hawaiian shirts, hanging with little Chase”

“Rockefeller died of AIDS, that was the end of his chapter And that’s the guy y’all chose to name your company after?”

It’s funny how I see some of the people below trying to repeat that ether had no facts on it as if it’s actually true just because bleek said it.

    • Glasscut

Hmm seems like facts to me especially “In 88 you was gettin chased through your buildin, Called at my crib and ain’t even give you my number.” hmm i don’t think nas is making that up.. Also the Jaz line.. Lol bleek doesn’t want to get left out of the will.. muahhaaaa

  • Guest

Wow I’m readin these comments and ya’ll niggas must be delusional. I was a Jay fan before I was a Nas fan and back when I didn’t care to listen to Nas I still bumped ether. Takeover was nice but you ain’t fuckin with ether. Ya’ll niggas ridin Jay’s dick way too hard and just because bleek said that ether had no facts some of ya’ll is repeatin it like it’s actually true. smdh. Nas turned ether into a verb that’s used throughout the hip hop community today. Hell, go to the community section of this website and ether is one of the marks that you can give somebody when they ether somebody in a comment. Takeover will never have the kind of lasting impact on the hip hop culture that ether had. I’ve always been a Jay fan but he got verbally bitch slapped in that beef.

    • Celz

1 verse of facts beats 4 verses of homophobic name calling in my book..

    • Boston80sbaby

I agree completely. I was more of a jay fan and ether got me into Nas stuff at the time. Obviously his earlier work was great (Nas)

  • Brick Soulja

Nas murdered Jay Z on Ether period!

  • king

It’s over bleek now go find your hip hop career.

  • Mr.Revolution

Now days if you get killed in a battle they say you got Ethered…Nuff said

  • Why is it, there’s this idea that Ether wasn’t facutal?
Jay did have a lot of Nas references in his first 2 albums that were used as reverence…KRS-1 had an album called The Blueprint of Hip Hop…He was known for dissing women in his earlier singles…”Gave you a style to run with” – Nas was the first one bigging up his projects heavy, one of the first with a gangsta moniker (Escobar vs Vito Correone), first with the super group, first with Scarface references…Jay admitted to wearing Jaz chains his damn self…”Taino-ho” is a joke about him boxing on that mtv show…Dame Dash being to Jay what Diddy was to Biggie is quite obvious…He still has no mustache…He did went from hanging with Jaz to Irv to BIG…Eminem did out rap him in Renegade…Russell Simmons did run the music label he was on…He did get his name from Jaz-O…He did try to do songs with Nas…He do use a ton of Biggie’s lines
I like them both but if your argument is Takeover is better because Ether wasn’t based on facts, you have a disoriented argument.

  • @Real_SirJamie

Some of the things said in BOTH songs weren’t known then, and from some of you commenting still aren’t. So your personal opinion should be about the MUSIC. “Take over” is a better SONG because of the beat, and overall concept (R.O.C., We runnin this rap $#!t…). Mr. Carter just chose that time to establish his dominance over N.Y. Rap since he felt comfortable with him and his crew on top at that time. Truth be told a “I’m better than you” hip hop war had been raging in N.Y. for about 18 good years by that time. Preme VS Large Pro over beats, and B.I., Jeru, Rae, and Nas over best rapper in early 90’s. People were already talking about the kid from Q.B. before we knew about him (Live at the Bar B Q) Jay was still rappin like Das Efx and in Jaz’s shadow. (not a diss just truth) Jay really looked up to Nas and Ether HURT. I couldn’t really tell back then I was young and cared about other things more but having the time to dissect NOW? WHOA. He hit Jay personally with things we as rap fans didn’t know about. Things STRICTLY MEANT FOR JAY. Like Bark said (What up Bark) Them east coast heads take their p.j.’s REAL SERIOUS LOL. The Rocafella line about dude from Marcy STILL goes over dudes heads til THIS DAY. I saw someone accuse another of making it up! It’s things like THAT… that prove “Ether” is the clear winner. Ether wasn’t factual? C’mon Bleek…And I see y’all attacking the punchlines and metaphors of the SECOND AND LAST VERSE ( and only a few at that). ETHER IS A RESPONSE. Are we forgetting that? It’s not like “Hit Em Up”. Nas responded to EVERYTHING dude said and killed him.

    • Marc Btes

I don’t know about that facts you just put out. Takeover wasn’t a full song when Jayz performed at summer jam. Prodigy was the main diss, Hov only stated, during that same concert “ask nas he don’t want it with hov” then, the 1st song Nas did publicly addressing hov, was H to the Omo, which was terrible. After that Jayz came back to takeover added the has verse and thats when the blueprint came out. Ether was released and then super ugly. I always felt like Jayz and bleek baited nas into this battle. Batman and Robin.

  • I just want to know why Memphis Bleek thought he could go up against Nas in the first place. That niggas music was trash, better yet it was Garbage. Therefore, it was best for Jay-z to step in and protect his side kick from that embarrassment.Side kicks who ride dick can’t speak on shit.In my opinion I do believe Jay-z won the battle because of his status at the time.He just had this laid back confidence that let you know he really was who said he was. However,I’m not completely pushing nas out the picture because he came back spittin with a vengence.Nas proved his point but Jay-z proved to the world he was who he said he was. Both artist were great at the time but only one can take the throne.
