GUESS WHO?

This is a little rumor that a birdie sent me. I didn’t even realize that Nas still has a label! But, whatever! Here is the good news. Nas has picked some lucky rapper to sign. Here is the scoop, he is going to make the big announcement at SXSW tomorrow! Honesty, that’s all I have right now.

NAS IS GOING TO ANNOUNCE A NEW SIGNING AT SXSW TOMORROW!

I was going to say Bishop Nehru. But it seems like he’s signed already. We’ll see.

I don’t know about this one Nas. Stick to MCing. You have a label and I haven’t heard about any success from the dudes you signed.

    • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

Welcome my bro, I feel the positive flow running thru you today. Peace!

Nas has already proved a bunch of times his no boss and has no idea how to do this

    • ihatefaggots

Lol he a worker not a boss.

    • Southcidal

He’s an artist first. That’s why his art is so captivating. Jay-Z has not been an absolute juggernaut as an exec, Eminem either. Kanye was stolen from Dame (who actually founded Yeezy), Seigel and the rest of them boys were Dame Dash guys as well. How well has Em faired? 50 cent? Ok, but who else? And 50 Cent basically created himself on the mixtape circuit before Shady/Aftermath came calling.

      • obie trice!!!! lol.. love his 1st album.

      • brotha_man

        dont forget cashis

      • meanygreene

      • oh and slaughterhouse.. duh..

      • Tommy Steel

Jay-Z’s one claim to fame as an exec. is J. Cole. They say he found Rihanna and Neyo but it was actually Ty Ty that found them. Jay just took the credit….like alot of things which is smart. one of the 48 laws of power ” let others do the work and you take the credit”

      • EL_BARK

No sigel and state prop were not dame guys
Sigel was sign by jay…. After meeting jay in philly.
Dame wasnt either there when they meet.

  • Sean Power

his most likely going a joint deal with some who can run the label and just put his name as a front

  • MrNoName2K

The Bravehearts lmao!! Talk about a group that got screwed over left and right…but idk, too many rappers in NYC so its a toss up

    • they were just the guys that chant “BRAVEHEART” over an over agin right? lol..

    • To be honest, the main nucleus out of the group was Nas fmr. bodyguard/friend “Horse”. He wrote both Jungle and Wiz’s verses for “Oocchie Wally” . It showed after he (Horse) left Nas and they put out the Brave hearts album

  • Havoc Wreaka III

    NY takes this L

  • ShortDogg

Nas is the the greatest but no comment on signing an artist. King Nas!!! Nas is still the greatest of all time. Who cares what he is trying to do by helping someone’s else stardom. Brother can’t help another brother out! Damn, if Nas sits on the throne (toilet), they complain how he craps. Brothers breath!!!

  • water_ur_seeds

He never really done to great as a leader, he works better solo…

  • why sign to nas?? why sign to a nigga who’s signed to another nigga who’s signed to another nigga??

    • Super_Hero

because he has more name recognition and friend in the biz then john doe from john doe records. Nas already has the connects. At this point in the game, I rather him sign dudes and do features then come out with an album trying to compete in this young man’s game. You think just because you sign to a hot label like “cash money” or “MMG” that you will sell. 90% of them dudes they sign still haven’t put out an album or have a release date. they are stuck. And the ones that did still flopped and will never get that same money from the machine to promote their album. Signing to them dudes is the worst thing you can do unless you already have a hot single. ex, bad boy. Red Cafe signed with Diddy and got nothing out. French had two popular song and was buzzing when he signed to Diddy. Diddy used the buzz and remix and promote French album. still flopped and Diddy won’t give French the same money next time around if there is a next time. Nas can play the background instead of competing with his artist the way Wayne and Ross does.

    • and that last nigga is signed to a jew lol

      • brotha_man

and the jew is signed to a jew

  • you looking at the same guy who been in the game for 20+ years and never took off as a boss…you looking at the same guy who signed to a nigga who talked about fukking his baby moms and throwing condoms in his daughters carseat…you looking at the same guy who ended up signing to nicca that he beat in a legendary battle…smh

  • See that’s what I was saying all along, “these old ass rappers need to stop trying to re-create their career and sign some new talent”….THANK YOU Nas, hopefully this person is a brand new artist that we don’t know about….THIS IS THE BEST NEWS I HEARD ALL DAY….So many kids with talent it’s time they start to invest in the kids and stop trying to be one. #winning

    • Southcidal

So old jazz artists, old rock artists, r&b artists and every other genre can continue to make music but old rappers can’t? I’m 37 and I don’t want to listen to the topics that a 19 year old is rapping about. I sit around waiting for the rappers in Nas’ age range to drop something. Should I just stop listening to rap if the “old” rappers stop re-creating themselves?

      • No you shouldn’t stop but instead of trying to get the younger rappers to spread a more positive messages, they are not making music for everyone they make music for their peers….Simply because these older rappers are not catering to their own demographics, they are trying to compete with the younger crowd, by trying to look, act and sound like them…..Older rappers should make music for older people, and it’s you older fans who have to step up to the plate and support the older artists…Stop looking for uplifting music from the kids, and let the kids make music for their own kind.

      • Super_Hero

I never seen Nas where tight jeans, glittery belts trying to appeas the young crowd. I would rather Nas not put out albums but instead do features and signing young artist.

      • Nas Escobar the drug dealer?

      • Say what you want about Rick Ross, but to me Ross is an older rapper who is smoking hot, his music is not really for kids, its for adults….Everything about Ross is “grown” and he is very successful at it…..But someone like Nicki Minaj who is still successful at what she did, but you all see how she had to put on all kinds of kiddie acts just to fool the kids into thinking that she is one of them, and she is clearly not…She was lucky…lol

      • Phibes

        You sound like a idiot.

      • How many times you used the word “Idiot” today? Dude, the computer is your friend, google more words and use them.

      • Phibes

Now I know your an idiot. Rick Ross is just as old as thee rappers you want to call old heads, but you cut him a pass. Like I said, You sound like an idiot! LOL

      • Dude you are 23 and proving it to everyone that your vocabulary consist of about 10 words….I need you to converse with me properly so we can have a real debate……..My thing about Ross is that he came in the game as an adult and started making music for adults…..Most other rappers who are older now, started in the game when they were much younger…..Here is another example, rapper 2 chainz is 40 years old and he tried to come off as someone younger, and his career is not as successful as Ross who has a target audience who are grown.

      • Truth Powell

But you gotta advance with the times too….and there’s nothing wrong with a 15 year old kid bumping Nas or a 40 year old man bumping Schoolboy Q in 2014.

      • Nothing wrong with a 15 year old bumping Nas, because it’s up to the kids to figure out what they want, good music always speaks for itself……But for Nas to still dress like a kid to purposely attract a younger crowd is what I am against…..To me advancing means to take your existing fans to a new level, not abandoning them for a younger audience like what most rappers do.

      • Phibes

        You sound like a idiot.

      • Again, state your argument, why am I an idiot? Back up your comment with something that we can debate about….Calling me an idiot, doesn’t add to the conversation at all.

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

you missed the point … thats fine… the prob is when nas is catering to an 15yo in a way where he dumbs himself down to the level of a 15yo and giving him all the immature values that he knows as a 40yo man only helped tear him down mentally and physically vs help build him to become the man he is and wants to continue to be going into his 50s … thats what you got souljaboy and them ouchea for … let them do that … and this isnt to say nas isnt doing that … just trying to make it clear …. in addition if you think about it … it gives a better spectrum of music … cause right now ish is blurred … whats the difference between Meek Mills music and Rick Ross …. theres @least a 20year gap between thier ages … but theres 1 song and 1 message … of course someone like Meeks mill music should be filled with hormonal bars about clubbing, drugs, violence, chicks, spending money cause he still young and dont know no better…. and someone like ross should be spitting about finding someone special, family (real family not the homey family) stacking chips buying homes and having kids, raising kids, learning form mistakes, staying away from the bs etc…. but they are who they are and im not knocking it … and like i said imo COOL …. it keeps the lane open for something more authentic cause its obvious thats not those guys lane ……

      • Truth Powell

Nas has never been known for dumbing down for modern 15 year olds. The closest he ever came was You Owe Me and Oochie Wally. And that was well over 10 years ago. His last albums have been: Hiphop is Dead, untitled, and Life is Good. Where is the dumbed down, catering to youth music on those records? I missed the point because it’s nonexistent.

      • Phibes

You sound silly & this is coming from a 23 year old. LOL SMH

      • Exactly you are 23 years old, and have nothing substantial to say about the topic but to call someone “silly” without backing up your argument….You are not saying anything with the comment that you just made.

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

yeah jordan aka mr. 23 still wet behind the ears … you are 100% correct but i hope these old as 40 yo rappers like ross just keep on pushing that young boy ish box chevys shirt off turning up music … it will keep that lane open for an authentic grown man to come thru and bless those who have cross the threshold of boyhood to manhood and use thier god given talents to bless thier life with some music to vibe too ….

      • And please don’t bring the other genres of music into this because you and I know dam well that in Hip-Hop is the ONLY genre where you have grown ass men wearing kids clothing, trying to reach the younger crowd…No other genre does that…I am sorry to say this but there is a whole lot more respect involved in the other genres of music and there is absolutely no respect involved in making Hip-Hop music.

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

I understand your point, but a lotta old school artist don’t try to act young, only to make good music, but record company only want candy coated hip hop. I know things change but Old School Still should have some kind of platform.JMO!!!!

      • I can agree with that….That makes sense.

      • Phibes

Maybe no respect from some cultures, but within the hip hop culture there is tons of respect. And if someone doesn’t respect the culture, does that mean you have to stop because of how someone else may feel? I think not!!! You sound like an idiot & i’m only 23 & have a better understanding of this than you. SMH!!!

      • See you are only talking from your own experience without doing research……..You are 23 and that’s not considered “young” in the industry you are not one of the kids that I am speaking about….Kids are 18 and younger.

      • Super_Hero

There are no successful 18 yr old rappers. How old is Mac Miller? Everybody that went plat is near or over 30. and one in his 40s.

      • Phibes

        Foolish boy!!!

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

        Co-sign that Bro.

    • Truth Powell

For real. I hope it’s some new ill spitter no one’s heard about, not one of these guys that have been making mixtapes for the last 5 years.

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

unless its some1 thats fresh and dope that finally deserves thier brake …. its def some dudes on the mixtape underground circuit that need and can use that shot

  • speaking of nas, check what the first story I ever posted on my website was about…this was when nas was complaining about not coming out and no promo from the label etc…

    Dear Disgruntled Def Jam Employees

I am writing this letter out of love from one brother to the next. It is becoming quite concerning to me about the amount of rappers complaining about their label situations.

First off, you chose to sign your deal. No one put a gun to your head and made you. You knew that there were chances of your deal going sour. And if you did not know, it was because they sweet talked you. You know how when we want some p…from a pretty girl we tell them anything but when we get the p…we don’t want anything to do with them. The label must have done that to you, thus, semi pimping you emotionally and financially. So ask yourself, who’s the mack.

Secondly, most of you have had your success and believe that you have proved to the label your worth. You dummy, you are an employee. You work for the label. Do you not know that as a black man in America, you must work twice as hard and will have to prove your worth on an ongoing basis? Ask any black man that has a “real” job.

Thirdly, most of you disgruntled rappers refuse to get with the times. While hip-hop has been around for 30+ years, most of the sales (digital, physical CD’s, paraphernalia, concert tickets, etc) come from the 15-23 year old range. So naturally they will buy what they can either closely relate to or something that they could never relate to but are infatuated by. Even though my generation cherishes it, they do not want to hear that boom-bap sh…They want something that beats hard in their car, something they can vibe to in a club, or something that just makes them feel good. Until these old, disgruntled rappers understand this, their projects will remain shelved.

It can be said that it is a sad state of affairs when rappers like Souljah Boy, Gucci Mane, and Waka Flaka Flame can release CD’s whenever they please, while a more established, veteran rapper like Nas has to give handjobs at the Def Jam round table to get a single released. These executives know nothing about the culture and couldn’t care less about their rappers, or rather their employees, but the one thing they do know is profit. They know how to generate money and that is their sole purpose.

To all of you old, broke, disgruntled rappers: either get with the program or get out of the game. It is that simple. Grown men should not be crying over these situations. Nas of all people should not be going at the label. He has a history of making bad choices (wifing up Carmen who ended up letting Jay Z get them backshots while Nas was touring; marrying Kelis who ended up sodomizing him for $60k a month for child support; signing to work for his former foe…) the list goes on. So Nas has lost credibility with most people because of all the dumb stuff he has done. Like Jay-Z once said “smarten up Nas.”

The main lesson is that if you do not generate interest, why would the label invest in you? There are ample resources like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram where these artists can speak directly to their fans and generate some kind of buzz. I truly hate to say this but K Michelle has a bigger buzz than Nas.

Nasir, and any other disgruntled rappers who may read this, I am not bashing you. I am just detailing the harsh realities of the music business and life in general. At some point we all become irrelevant and fall into obscurity. We must accept that but we can stay ahead of the game and approach it from a different angle, however, whining never works.

    • Youtube “Down The Charts” by KRS1
Dope track to compliment the letter.

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

when you drop to 26 you in the old school mix … dope !! track !! real !! inspiring lyrically !! @ sametime informative !! props to krs1 they prob just now starting to get it

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

        HUMBLE PIE!!

      • *Instant classic & favorite!

        That track went in!

    • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

Agree with your article, but their are OLD SCHOOL FANS ,that want artist like Nas , Geto Goys, DJ QUIK, TRICK DADDY, and so to have a voice in something they help create or evolve, whether you like their music or not. It always come down to sales, never about the artist music. It’s a place in music for everbody, young and old.

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

but its like he says labels cater to a certain demo .. artist like that should be and will be forced to go indy to supply thier demand … sadily alot of those artist dont have the indy trait to survive or the ambition to go indy … labels are into copying whats hot which is why we went from Lil Wayne to Tpain to 2chainz to Future to Cash Out to Rich Home to Young Thug …. do yall see a pattern here ???? (which is also why i think cmb passed on signing young thug they already got 1 lol) luckily labels are starting to see light with guys like K.Dot and J cole showing that artist who actually speak about stuff vs artist who constantly sell stuff …. actually can do the same #s and in some cases actually surpass the more commercial artist ….

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

The beats too, name a song with a dope ass beat. Radio too is the blame. Geto boys and NWA went platinum with no radio or video. Got to be dope beats, If the beats dope it will sale the album itself.Today, It not music too me, just sounds put together. Need instruments. I miss the sampling, aleast try trying to create, Now ni*gg*s is just lazy.JMO!

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

in addition the business of hip hop and sampling kind of hurts those artist … most of those artist you mention are sample heavy … and hip hop is so hot right now … the sample owners are coming for that $$$$$ which drives the cost of a hip hop project UP !!!! so unless your name is kanye west or rick ross you may not have the means to put that together on an indy level … which also sort of takes the soul out of hip hop … cause hip hop got its soul from sampling … today most hip hop producers are cut from the swizz beats cloth where they are making original production which is a gift and curse …. we lose the soul but that producer gains all rights and owner ship of the production which also = mo money for that producer and lesser budgets to create an album etc…… i heard ross say a few times to his new artist like meek to send him a song for thier MMG project but MAKE SURE ITS SAMPLE FREE !! which again goes towards the BUSINESS OF HIP HOP

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

AIN’T THAT SAD THO, THOSE ARTIST DESERVE TO GET PAID TOO. i’M PRETTY SURE SOME KIND OF COMPROMISE COULD MADE. MONEY TOOK THE SOUL OUT OF HIP HOP. BROTHERS BE ALL ON FLASHING MONEY AND CARS, BUT DON’T WANNA PAY FOR SAMPLES. A LOT OF THESE PRODUCERS CHARGES THESE RIDICULOUS PRICES FOR SUBPAR BEATS. PREMIER AND DRE, THE BUCKS STOP RIGHT THERE. MAYBE A FEW MORE I;M MISSING TIMB, DJ QUIK, PETE ROCK. MIGHT AS WELL SAY IT;S A BUSINESS NOW NOT HIP HOP. SALES & BUDGETS. THAT THE ANSWER TO ALL QUESTION REGARDING HIP HOP.SMH..

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

dont forget cormega but mega was on before nas but nas always keeped his name out there until they started beefing … i dont blame nas for bravehearts those were his true bothers and dudes who grew up with he had to do something for them …. but also DONT FORGET AZ !! … imo nas shine light on alot of dope rappers … but its was like the gift and curse cause people would compare them to nas which is unfair … sort of the same treatment memphis bleeek has gotten sitting next to jayz …. everyone nas cosigned outside of bravehearts has been dope imo …. and even within bravehearts Wiz and Nashawn were both dope …. nas’s actual blood brother Jungle has his moments but thats fam … and horse was never a fave of mine but people says he has a classic verse on oochie wally which is prob more of an indirect shot @ nas on some jayz ish ….
