Independent Artists Videos May Soon Be Deleted From YouTube

(AllHipHop News) It appears Google-owned YouTube is now involved in the “major vs. indie” debate that has been ongoing in the music industry for years. According to reports, the video streaming site is on the verge of completely deleting content from some independent artists.

YouTube is set to add a subscription service in the coming days. Reportedly named YouTube Music Pass, the new service will allow users to avoid ads and download music directly from the site.

“Music Pass” has led to new licensing deals with major labels and 90% of the industry, but indie labels are reportedly being offered “highly unfavorable” terms as compared to the big companies.

Some indies are refusing to participate. The independents argue they account for 35% percent of all music traffic on YouTube and that should be justification for a percentage of the revenue from Music Pass.

Google apparently has responded by threatening to omit the independents from the new YouTube service and remove their videos from the free site as well. Videos on Vevo should stay active since the site has separate licensing agreements.

“While we wish that we had 100% success rate, we understand that is not likely an achievable goal and therefore it is our responsibility to our users and the industry to launch the enhanced music experience,” stated Vice President and Global Head of Business at YouTube Robert Kyncl.

This development could have an enormous negative effect on the success of independent artists. Forbes‘ Hugh McIntyre writes:

Perhaps more important is the fact that many up-and-coming artists may have a harder time sharing their music and videos… Barring lesser-known names from the most popular streaming site in the world could seriously damage the growth of independent artists, and hurt the careers of future stars.

It is not clear at the moment how Google’s decision will affect unsigned acts.

Majors tryna take the game back- making power moves

    • Kool Kool Kutta

Actually the “majors” have no choice in the matter but to take the money and participate due to the overwhelming success of youtube. It’s not something the major labels came up with but google is trying to get like I tunes. It’s either “get down or lay down” for the major record companies.

How do you figure that? This is Googles way of saving the music industry and capitalizing. The industry loves this idea. This is like shutting down Myspace, or Netflix in the future.

    Big bank take little bank….

  • Myleage

buy music from youtube? that may work. but why are they low balling the indie artists?

  • atlantahiphopshop

The only winners in this is YouTube. YouTube is on it’s way out anyway. Besides, people are not going to pay for major artists when they already have a way of paying for major artists. Now downloading indies would be something serious.

  • MR..ASS..TO..MOUTH..

im going to assume this doent apply to these corny non-rapping niggas like chief keef and the rest of the untalented buffoons getting deals off youtube views

I like this! Perfect half these independent artists suck. We need real talent that can stand the test of times, not some lil kid making dance songs. Hiphop has to be bigger than just cutesy stuff by adolescents. So if YouTube wants to exclude independents while it’s unfair it’s a double edge sword yea u get rid of some trash music but breaking artits returns to the culture. Artists use to get broken in by dj’s and the streets not an internet site

Some way i really agree whit you, youtube is the cause of lots of crap bringing into the for front, same whit soundcloud to be honest. In the past you watch tv or went to a record store or party, listen radio to hear music. Most of all this music was already rated to a quality level before it got trough the speakers. Today you got quality stuff swimming trough lots and lots of unprofessional crap. Im sorry i don’t want to put people down, i know music is a form of art, but its not wrong if it got a sort of quality filter before the main public stamps it as quality. Sorry for my bad english.

  • Can’t agree with that…they need to keep it how it is, it allows an outlet and they make they’re money from advertisement…youtube has brought alot of ppl to the forefront…if anything, remove the monitizting from you tube, and ppl would just be able to use it as promo, they don’t grind they don’t eat.

This is that bullshit. Everybody be on here talkin bout the industry and corrupt shit….This is that!! Right here in front of your eyes. Now the labels will use this to sign more acts to those slave contracts and use youtube videos as a pitch to get them back on majors. Anybody who’s thinks this is good are completely missing what the motives seem to be. It’s one thing if indies got the same contract. But they getting bullshit deals compared to the majors to force their hand or make them go somewhere else. Or even have to go back and deal with a major when that completely negates being independent in the first place. This isn’t just youtube doing this. You know the majors made sure the indies got a bullshit end of the deal.
