Azealia Banks Parts Ways With Universal Music

AZEALIA BANKS IS “FREE AT LAST” FROM RECORD DEAL

(AllHipHop News) Azealia Banks has been waiting to drop her major label debut album Broke With Expensive Taste for sometime. The project had been sitting on the shelf for years at Universal Music Group, but Banks may finally get to share her LP with the world now that she is no longer signed to UMG.

The “212” rapper revealed on Twitter that she is “free at last.” She also expressed her excitement to be an independent artist.

In January, Banks was “begging” to be released from her contract with Universal. At the time she tweeted she felt like she was “in hell” and that she was “tired of having to consult a group of old white guys about my black girl craft.”

Banks was previously signed to a development deal with British indie label XL when she was 17. That situation did not work out either. She bumped heads with label head Richard Russell.

She told the BBC in 2012, “This is not what I worked so hard my entire life to do – to be rejected by some English guy in West Bumblefrickin’ nowhere London, telling me I’m amateur or something like that. So I just said, ‘Screw you!'”
