DJ Mustard Talks Him and YG Almost Quitting, His Beats Sounding The Same + MORE

(AllHipHop News) Mustard has been on almost every popular song of 2014. During a recent interview, DJ Mustard explains when himself and label partner YG were planning on quitting rap, his sound being duplicated and more.

In 2014 alone, DJ Mustard has produced tracks for J. Lo, Jason Derulo, Trey Songz, T.I. and Iggy Azaela and a litany of others. Mustard, the official DJ of YG explained to Billboard how himself and YG were close to quitting years ago:

YG and I told each other when we was coming up that if we didn’t feel like we was close to making it by 25, we was going to stop. Now, we’re cool.

With ubiquity comes imitation and Mustard is aware of the imitations of his sound found in other production, specifically Iggy Azaela’s “Fancy. According to Mustard, “You can’t pick a fight with anyone doing something with your sound. I actually play ‘Fancy’ when I DJ. It doesn’t bother me.” While that criticisms is brushed off, Mustard addressed the idea that all of his beats sound the same:

I hear a lot of people saying my stuff sounds the same. When you’re in my position, people come to you to give them the same sound in a different type of way. And once they’re happy with it and you’re happy with it, there’s another hit record. But this album is going to show people I can do whatever type of music.

DJ Mustard’s debut album 10 Summers releases on Google Play tomorrow (August 12th).

Only thing I could say is what goes up must come down! Get your $$$ why you can mustard.

  • Nemesis_Enforcer

Why are you standing against a brick wall?

    • JEM

      Why does it bother you?

While I’m not a fan of dude’s sound, i would say that while you’re on top now just prepare for when you’re not the it producer anymore. Far better music producers than him have come and went and all you can hope for is that they managed their money well while they were on top.

He can’t be mad at people having his sound. He stole the Bay’s sound anyway

    • The Magical Negro

Preach. I’m not even from the west coast but that sound has origins pre-mustard.

    • JEM

      How?

    • TheAfroRican

Exactly. Dude should pay Sean T and Rick Rock homage.

    • Tanman1

      He took Lil jons sound

  • AK

LOL he really got a mustard bottle chain

    • Screwface

And his birth name is Dijon… Smh.

I’ve asked this many a time and never get a straight adult answer: WTF is a “sound???” Example, DJ premier… Everyone who knows hip hop right away would say east coast boom bap, godfather producer, but… He’s from TEXAS, so isn’t ANYTHING he makes a “downsouth beat”? Most of Dre’s beats are either from people out of the country, or new York, so how did he father the “west coast sound” when the main drummer from Chronic 2001 is japanese, and scott storch is a jew? People need to quit trying to own something that isnt theirs. I make beats and have some in my stash that people would say sound like im “biting” mustard, the problem is, i made them in 2001 when he was probably still doing homework counting on his fingers. So did he steal my sound? Or does my lack of popularity prevent rational thought?

      Very real statement!

    • The Magical Negro

I see “sound” in a more broad sense that different eras/genres have different sounds that come and go as time passes. As far as people stealing ones “sound” it’s simple, music is universal. It evolves and devolves (is that a word?).

Shit, soul samples could make a comeback if the right artist has the right hit from the right producer.

  • Q.

    Hilarious.

Nikki rocked a chicken wing… Mustard got a mustard bottle, right?
Maybe Rick Ross needs to get a potato salad chain.
All these coons need a watermelon chain too. SMH

  • 1hiphophiphop

His “sound” can be duplicated by a 3 year old

  • JEM

“YG and I told each other when we was coming up that if we didn’t feel like we was close to making it by 25, we was going to stop.”
Stop and do what? Go back to banging? I respect YG more that Mustard bc at least YG is honest with it. Just like a lot of street artist, music increased their years of living. Both of them should continue to make music for their crowd and SAVE MONEY. As much as I would want them to last, I don’t see it happening. Mustard is no Dre and YG is no Snoop, but they are good for todays crowd. Longevity these days are rare.
