EXCLUSIVE: Statik Selektah Explains Why He Is Not Impressed By Bobby Shmurda's "Hot N*gga"

(AllHipHop News) Bobby Shmurda’s YouTube smash “Hot N***a” and the associating dance has gotten a co-sign from Jay Z, Beyoncé, Meek Mill, and others. The success of the Jahlil Beats produced track even led to the Brooklyn native securing a deal with Epic Records, but not everyone is praising Shmurda and his hit single yet.

During an interview with AllHipHop.com, DJ Statik Selektah explained why he is not quick to jump on the Bobby Shmurda bandwagon. The creator of the recently released What Goes Around album plans to wait and see if Shmurda can consistently release long-lasting, high quality music.

Statik said about “Hot N***a”:

I don’t knock anyone else’s hustle if they’re trying to put on for New York, but to me that’s like a flash in the pan right now. If Bobby Shmurda makes a career out of that, and he makes real music then I’ll be impressed, but right now I haven’t really heard anything original that’s really impressed me.

His single is cool, but it’s a freestyle to me. I understand the dance and all that, but let’s see if he’ll make some music that will last a couple of years. We’ll see. I hope he does. I hope everybody makes good s**t. But I felt like it was a Chicago type of thing when I first saw it.

We’ll see what he does with it. That’s not really what I’m rocking with though. We got our own thing going on. [“Hot N***a”] is a fun record. You play it in the club, people do the dance. To me, that’s – I don’t want to say a gimmick, there’s just a catch to it. What happens when you take that element out? Is he going to put out a real good record? We’ll see. I hope so.

  • Stay Phokus

    Shamurda is alright
Once everyone steals his flow, he gonna be swept under the rug

    • that dude

Then he should be able to change his flow and content like a real artist.

    • Killuminati

You act like he has a unique style lol

    • dee

Nothing he doing is original from the flow to the dance

  • KILL NEW YORK RAPPERS

STATIK TIRED OF GARBAGE PICKING OLD N.Y RAPPERS#KILLNYRAP

  • El Dogga

Valid points here……flavor of the month.

  • Black Avatars

How funny a whiteboy trying to school a black man on something they created lmao!! I’m proud to see young blacks not out on the street corners hustling for a buck.

    • William Witherz

Have you seen the video? That’s all the video is – a bunch of young blacks out on street corners. The song is wack. I’m glad somebody said it. Statik gets his props for speaking the real, even though he tried to tiptoe around saying is was huff. Them lame dudes might as well have been here in the Chi with that crap video and song.

      • Black Avatars

Street corner in the sense of selling dope, catching bodies. It’s a video so of course they will be in the hood on the block for the video. My point is Bobby is occupying his time with something other than the street. That whole “Copying Chicago” is bullshit. Chicago music is nothing but Atlanta Trap renamed.

      • Myleage

or maybe its just a bad song. jay z and oj juiceman both talk about trapping but one makes good music.

      • Black Avatars

I’m not even talking about the song. I’m talking about young kids finding avenues of making money instead of hustling on the streets.

      • Myleage

no one is knocking his legit hustle. even statik said that. its just an ass of a song. its fun to turn up but its not that good of a song. that’s all anybody was saying

      • Black Avatars

All I said was it’s good to see young blacks find other avenues. His opinion is his opinion. Tons of other people like it. Statik should be happy people no longer calling him a premo wannabe, just like he saying Bobby is copying Chicago.

      • FatAssFu

Is being black your only credential for trolling an actual contributor to hip hop music?

      • Black Avatars

        Old ass post LMAO!!!

      • Killuminati

The only thing coming out of him being signed and getting money is more drugs and guns for his homies in that video lol….they uploaded that video not thinking it would pop off like it did. So naturally they are the ones on the corner committing the crimes. He will be dropped in a year like Trinidad James.

      • Black Avatars

        Cool

      • Capbussa

        Jay z likes it tho

    • Mack

Bobby Shmurda didn’t exactly invent or re-invent hip-hop. What Statik lacks in melanin, B.S. lacks in quality music. You better check Statik’s track record and contributions to the culture before labelling him as a generic whiteboy.

      • Black Avatars

What are you talking about…..Where did I say bobby
invented something? The whole “White trying to school a black” was in
the general sense, not to be taken literally. I know exactly who Statik
is. He will always be a Premo Knock off.

      • Black Avatars

What exactly has he contributed? He jacked Premo entire sound and made
money of him. He ain’t nothing but another white boy eating of the
black culture. Like I said he ain’t original, he’s a Premo wannabe.
Kick rocks nigga. 2ndly you called him a generic whiteboy, i didn’t.

      • Mack

Listen, I doubt that Preemo or any other respected producer backs you on this. Statik, 9th Wonder, DJ Scratch etc. are inspired by Premier but have developed their own sounds. Just like he himself looked up to Marley Marl and then found his own style. If anything, Bobby S benefits from the work people like Bun B, Talib Kweli and Pharoahe Monch put in, without bringing any original stuff whatsoever. Sure, he’s got a lane with 2 Chainz, Trinidad James and ’em, but that’s about it.

      • 5% Hov

        Whaa….. has he contributed???

        #BLASPHEME

  • johnblacksad

“What happens when you take that element out? Is he going to put out a real good record?”

I could easily answer those questions for you if you need me to!

    • 5% Hov

      LOL
      Answers : Nothing. And No.

“I spoke to Statik when I shot niggas” LOL

Statik needs to fall back – he aint say nothing wrong but people willl start calling him an old bitter head. He should givve Bobby some beats see if can ride an actual NY sounding beat (doubt it)

That new album from Statik sounds FIRE tho.

    • Ryan Cole

We need more “bitter haters” and less ass kissing. The more people ride the waves of bullshit artists, the more bullshit we’ll end up getting. “Jay likes this wack shit, so maybe I should rap and spit wack shit and veterans will co-sign me.”

  • BigDayOne

Bobby bout to be like ” caught Statik body bout a week ago”

    • Jared

      lol

  • hustle

He spoke nothing but the truth

  • fasho

    Truth hurts…

  • dee

My first time hearing this record was 2 days ago and first reaction was I see why I kept reading comments that jackpot is better. Lets be honest the only thing carrying this song is the dance and thats not even original.

  • ursocalledgod

this song is mad wack. its just something for some young cats and older cats stuck in their childhood to turn up to in the club. probably get to fighting and busting at each other in the parking lot. this BS wont be around in a year. look at the performance 50 cats on stage rapping over a track with the words still in it. that aint professional nor will it stand the test of time. watch.

  • Jeff Van Gundy

nigga sayin 100pct facts lol Banks actually killed the beat it irritates me seeing things like “hot nigga freestyle” when we all kno who killed it first

  • Super_Hero

Right now there Bobby is Mims/Ron Browz. I don’t take it as a diss. Like Nas said, you went platinum now do it again and again.

  • Sensual A

The beat and the little hook goes hard but the verses and lyrics are 1st grader material.

  • I completely agree. I also want to add how garbage the song is…

Well, Statik isn’t the only one not impressed…..but I wish Bobby Shmurda the best.

  • #SS

statik is just a hater! mad cause the boy its making millions and everybody loves him.
