“THE KING OF AUTO-TUNE” EXPLAINS WHY YEEZY USES THE TECHNIQUE WRONG

(AllHipHop News) T-Pain has been very vocal about his contribution to the use of Auto-Tune becoming a major trend in modern music. The “Can’t Believe It” singer has also been critical of other artists’ attempt at using the pitch altering effect. Pain recently spoke with HuffPost Live, and during the segment he points out one particular rapper that is not using Auto-Tune the right way in his opinion.

T-Pain said:

Kanye uses it, but he doesn’t use it correctly. He makes great music with it, but the way that I use it and the way that I’ve shown Chris [Brown] and Jamie [Foxx] to use it, he doesn’t use it that way… He sings without it first and then he puts it on after he’s done with the vocals… You don’t know how it’s going to come out. You can’t catch your mistakes before they happen. So sometimes it gets a little bit wobbly and things like that… [Kanye’s 808s & Heartbreak] was actually pretty good, but I had a lot to do with that album… 808s & Heartbreak was Rappa Ternt Sanga.

According to Pain, Auto-Tune is essentially ineffective if the performer does not have an understanding of melody, harmony, and music in general. After dropping Gold certified studio albums such as Rappa Ternt Sanga, Epiphany, and Three Ringz, the Florida native is prepping a “Greatest Hits” project. T-Pain Presents Happy Hour: The Greatest Hits is scheduled for release on November 4.
