Welcome to The Odd Side, a column that explores the effects of Hip Hop’s transformation through new sounds.
It’s been a while since we supplied you with some good music to get the summer going. But now that it’s the Fall, the sound seems to change just like the seasons. While projects like Travis Scott’s Rodeo graced us into the times, there’s much more either dropping soon or on Soundcloud. The artists in today’s installment kind of add the vibes and style of the season, oddly. Taking out the heat and ferocity of the summer, and supplying music that fits the colder weather. Here’s a couple of songs for the fall.
Mac Miller – The Clubhouse
Recently, Mac Miller has been releasing a couple of singles from his anticipated project GO:OD AM, and they’ve been getting quite the attention on Soundcloud. The latest leaked single was “The Clubhouse”, a cut with a banging beat, DJ scratches, and a flow by Miller so fly it makes you feel like you’re on Cloud 9. Hope to hear more dope music from the Pittsburgh rapper this week.
Melo-Zed – Stimulus
HM&M Recordings is a Los Angeles record label that has been getting listeners hip to new age producers like Kaytranada, Gravez, and Ta-Ku. Now though, it’s this young 19-year old producer named Melo-Zed. “Stimulus” is one of his newest songs out of HW&W, and it sounds so damn cool. Zed’s new track has a Dilla-like bass line with a futuristic twist, that is until the beats switches up with a reggae-like kick. The sounds of what might be a Janet Jackson sample also adds a smooth element to the song, making it the track you might want in rotation at night.
Jordan Bratton – Frank
This New York artist has been recommended in a past installment of The Odd Side, but he once again deserves a spot in this one as well. Compared to his past singles, “Frank” seems to be a small switch up from the artist’s usual sound, using a more heavy hitting beat than many of the other tracks in his repertoire. However Bratton’s vocals and unique lyrics still continue to be the main attribute to the single.
Goldlink ft. Louie Lastic – Movin’ On
Although this came out around the end of the summer, “Movin On” definitely is the cut to play now. The track is strongly influenced by Tupac’s classic song “I Get Around”, but VA producer Louie Lastic adds a modern spin to it. The chorus at the hook also gives the song some flavor as well.
Jarreau Vandal – Be Alright
Kendrick Lamar’s single “Alright” might be the song that people sing in the streets, but don’t sleep on this edit by this Soulection producer. “Be Alright” focuses more the crazy production, with the chorus keeping you interested in the buildup of the beat. The song also includes a keyboard and guitar to fill in and add the tones in the back as well.
