Jay Z Defends Tidal, Talks Roc Nation Sports & Performs “Empire State Of Mind” (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Hip Hop legend Jay Z gave Jimmy Kimmel a rare television interview this week. The Roc Nation boss stopped by Kimmel’s late night ABC program on Tuesday to help promote the TIDAL X: 1020 concert event in Brooklyn.

Jay sat down with Kimmel to talk about battling fellow BK emcee Busta Rhymes in high school and the changes taking place in his home borough. The conversation included a discussion about the Tidal streaming service as well.

“It’s better. It’s better sound. It’s better everything,” said Jay about Tidal’s lossless audio compared to its competitors. “They want people to believe that you don’t care about sound and quality.”

He added, “Just think of it like a big jukebox… This way you put $9 in and you get 30 million songs. And you can take the jukebox and put it in your pocket.”

The Blueprint album creator was also asked about taking on the task of being a sports agent with Roc Nation Sports. According to Hov, the people off the field are obligated to help prevent the financial failings of the sports stars they sign.

“No one ever talks about the agent. [It’s just,] ‘the dumb athlete.’ The agent goes on about their business,” stated Jay. “But it’s also the agent’s responsibility to take care of these kids.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live also aired Jay’s performance of “Empire State Of Mind” from the TIDAL X: 1020 event at the Barclays Center. Jay Z closed out the concert that also featured Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Usher, Nas, Rick Ross, Meek Mill, T.I., and many more.

Still pushing that crappy tidal Spotify got the streaming industry by the balls and they not letting go.😂

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

thats cool its plenty of market share available … same can be said about nike but reebok & addidas and ect… still are valuable company’s ….

      • Knickfan4life

The difference between the sneaker company and music is Nike does not make shell toe Adidas but all the music is the same on every service.

      • Watever

Which is why Tidal provides exclusive content like the concert last night, Tidal only releases, interviews, and web series. Apple Music has exclusives too. Streaming is becoming way more than just music. These companies are looking to become the new HBO and Netflix.

      • Knickfan4life

I understand what you are saying I don’t know if you work for the company but music is music that is all people want. Netflix started out with DVD then work up to being a streaming powerhouse. If he was smart he would have made a music social network.

      • Watever

No, I don’t work for the company. And I’m sorry but you’re wrong. This generation wants more access than just music. They get that for free on YouTube or file sharing sites. Older cats may not ever sign on to these streaming sites, but that’s not their target audience anyway. And the market is too competitive to not jump in with as much exclusive content as possible. That’s why Spotify is now looking to add video to their service.

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

i remember there was a time only a select few had an iPhone … now everybody got one and people will point out they aint getting the green bubble if you dont have one when you text them …….. most of the people i know that were on iphones early are also the ones using spotify and tidal and google play etc today ……. it will eventually go mainstream …. in due time …………………….

      • Watever

Yeah, that’s what Jay was saying in the video. It used to be people only bought records. Then it went to mostly cassettes. Then it went to mostly CDs. Then it went to mostly digital downloads. We’re just at the beginning of streaming. In another 5-10 years, an entire generation would have grown up only using streaming. It’s looking at the long game…

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

and fyi that was def my own opinion i didnt even watch the jayz interview yet … #me&jayzONTHESAMEPAGE lol

      • Knickfan4life

No they don’t because YouTube is visual and vevo and Spotify are free what can tidal give besides music and a few exclusives for my 9 dollars .now if he was throwing in tidal music, gaming and exclusive TV series like crackle for 9 dollars.he would have destroyed the streaming competition. Tidal Will be over with in 2 years.

      • Watever

You obviously have never used Tidal. They already have exclusive visual series/content and they’re adding more. You have a short term vision about business. They will continue to add more and more exclusive content to the service which will build their user base. Just like Netflix and HBO did. And Spotify probably won’t be free for much longer. The record labels are going to ask for way more revenue when their current contracts with Spotify ends.

      • Knickfan4life

I don’t think you understand why it’s flopping in business you have to give people something they never had.

      • Watever

Who said its “flopping”? They doubled their subscribers in 6 months, partnered with HTC, and continued to bring on numerous high-profile artists as co-owners. Tidal’s social media impact is bigger than Spotify’s. Whenever Tidal broadcasts an event, it’s trending on Twitter (which is free advertising). And what don’t you get about the fact they are giving people something they never had. They’re called exclusives. That’s why people are signing onto the service.

      • Knickfan4life

It’s not making enough money for the amount it cost for the investors to pay out in publishing royalities.

      • Watever

And you know this how? Why would billion dollar companies and millionaire artists keep investing in Tidal if they didn’t see at as being profitable? And you do realize Jay just purchased Tidal in January and they just relaunched the platform in March? That’s not even a complete fiscal year to evaluate profits and earnings.

      • Knickfan4life

I read Wallstreet journal every day

      • Watever

Please provide a link to the WSJ or any other credible source that provides proof Tidal is unable to pay out royalties.

      • Knickfan4life

Nonetheless, if Jay Z can’t come up with the cash for Sony, he faces the possibility that Tidal might lose albums from some of its co-owners, most painfully Beyoncé, a Sony artist. “I’m pretty sure most of the artists that were at the press conference don’t control their own streaming rights,” says Peter Mensch, co-founder of Q Prime, the talent agency that manages the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica.

      • Watever

“Jay Z is a friend and business associate for many years,” stated Sony Music CEO Doug Morris. “I have always admired his business acumen, his entrepreneurship and his passion for music. All of our content, including Beyoncé, is available through the Tidal service, and we have announced no plans to remove our catalog from Tidal. Like all of our other partners, we are rooting for Jay and Tidal to succeed.”

      • Knickfan4life

He can be a “friend” but Michael Jackson estate not trying to hear the money is not being paid properly bruh. I wish him luck but when you think about yahoo losing 43 million on a streaming TV venture you know tidal will not be around in 10 years. Market is crowded

      • brotha_man

Not true Idgaf about exclusives and concert footage. I already know what I want to listen to and Jay z, Nikki, and lil Wayne exclusives aren’t enough….I’ll stick to iTunes music.

      • Watever

Guess what? Nobody asked you to switch. FTR, there are more exclusives than just Jay, Nicki and Wayne. But do you.

      • Yabiggirl

Which is why Tidal is better! Hov thinks 5-10 years ahead of the current situation. Cant knock dat boi hustle

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

HBO and Netflix of music is def a clear precise way to look @ it …

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

yes and no … tidal has exclusive content … if you want to compare similar sevices … you ever been on a block full of barber shops ?? block full of pizza shops?? block full of chinese food shops?? in business its actually ok and prefered to have direct competition … if theres an Eckerds on the block open up a CVS accross the street ……………..

      • Knickfan4life

I understand the exclusive content but that is not enough when Spotify is free and rdio is 3 dollars. It just did not make good business sense to get into streaming.

      • TheBlackItalian

My man threw in Eckerds. Lmao!

  • what?why

Wow lots of plastic surgery for Jay! He looks better in pictures than in person but he can rap.

  • WeakSauce

Saw this shit last night but Jay-Z looked like an idiot trying to convince people about Tidal lol With everyone else you 5 songs with Tidal you get 30 Million! Oh sit yo ass down KneeGrow!

    • TheBlackItalian
