The movie about the rise of legendary rap group N.W.A was well received by critics. It also dominated the box office, becoming the highest grossing music biographical picture of all time.

Gray and the movie’s actors were not recognized with Oscar nominations either. Straight Outta Compton did earn a nod for Best Original Screenplay. The other nominees in that category include Bridge of SpiesEx MachinaInside Out, and Spotlight.

Some film experts expected rapper/actor Will Smith to make the Oscar list for Best Actor for his role in Concussion. Smith was nominated for Best Actor at the Golden Globe Awards, and he took home the Hollywood Actor Award at the Hollywood Film Awards.

However, Smith did not make the final cut at the Academy Awards. Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Matt Damon (The Martian), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) will compete for Best Actor.
