Mos Def Arrested In South Africa, Ordered To Leave The Country

(AllHipHop News) According to reports, Mos Def (aka Yasiin Bey) has been arrested in Cape Town, South Africa. The Brooklyn rapper, born Dante Smith, was taken into custody at the Cape Town International Airport over charges related to a “fraudulent passport.”

South Africa’s Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete addressed the situation via Twitter, and he revealed Mos and his family have 14 days to depart the country.

Mos reportedly relocated to South Africa in 2014. Last year, the “Ms. Fat Booty” rhymer did an interview with Beats By Dre where he explained why he moved away from the United States.

“America’s really a very challenging place for me,” said Mos. “Sure there’s great business opportunities, but given the current social, political, economic climate it’s very difficult, unnecessarily difficult, to create to the degree of fullness, the type of robust creativity I like to have – it’s very difficult for me to produce that [in America].”

Isn’t it funny that a black man is being ordered to leave an African country? Africa don’t care what skin color you have you must fall in line with rules and regulations of their immigration

    • Djibril

Should be the same way in USA. Enforce immigration laws. LA and Miami would be different places today for example.

      • Celz

Yes LA would be in Mexico.

    • cromthelaughinggod7

South Africa is where the whites are though. You must not realize that is not the rest of the African countries. That is the europeans from the UK that invaded that area killing Africans. So don’t equate the entire continent with them. This is where Nelson Mandela was president. The government is white and black but again there are a lot of white settlers living there who in fact are racist which makes no sense because they don’t belong there.

      • S.Soga

What rubbish. You gotta respect the laws of the land my brother. This has got nothing to do with race hommie. Blacks are not oppressed in South Africa. Racists are everywhere.

      • Q.

If racists are everywhere, then by definition, Blacks are oppressed “everywhere.” IJS

      • S.Soga

racism doesn’t only affect black people.

      • Q.

True. Though it affects most people of color, and Black people are people of color, so yeah…what I said before.

      • S.Soga

Now you saying people of colour and not black people. That makes your previous comment invalid.

  • Eli Pinilla

“America’s really a very challenging place for me,” said Mos. “Sure there’s great business opportunities, but given the current social, political, economic climate it’s very difficult, unnecessarily difficult, to create to the degree of fullness, the type of robust creativity I like to have – it’s very difficult for me to produce that [in America].”

^^^^^^^translation: these child support laws are crazy and they keep suspending my passport.

There are countries that allow dual citizenship that won’t deport. Brazil is one of them. He has the resources to make that happen. I always thought these rappers were smart when I was younger cuz of what they said and how they put their words together but naw, these dudes are dumb. They don’t know how to move in the real world. They only rap smart; “smart dumb nggz”- Ghost

  • Mos Def…. Damn! How you gonna get your people’s taken from the motherland through bondage and slavery, you attain some success and impregnate a billion women and then go back to the motherland only to get kicked the f*ck out for shady sh*t? That’s f*cked up…. #misdirectedbackpacker

lol he gotta be back across an ocean before ethan couch gets back across the fence for basically the same shit.

  • Savimbi

Yet they’ve let the Boers illegally and forcefully occupy their land going on centuries now. As an African I will say, South Africans have, onlplenty occasions, shamed us by some of their behaviors towards others of African descants. Last year, in protest of lack of job opportunities, instead of taking the streets against the Boer occupiers, they resorted to publicly burn, kill and humiliate other African migrants. There is a video of them burning an entire family in the streets. These are some very lost ni99as. But I am still disappointed in Mos.

    • Djibril

      Agree

    • Freedom Fighter

Yeah what kind of message are you sending to the disenfranchised black people of America that feel like going home to the motherland.

    • S.Soga

That’s not fair my brother. Why don’t you mention that there was a vigorous campaign against xenophobic attacks, launched by the people of South Africa? The truth is that a very very big majority of the population was against these attacks. Google it!!

Also, South Africa has accommodated a lot of African foreigners in their land…..what with all these atrocities happening close to its borders and elsewhere in Africa….no wonder some call it the America of Africa. Don’t slander the one country in Africa that gives you opportunities like no other in Africa.

And one more thing brother, Boers are my brothers!!! Because their language is only spoken in Africa. That means they are African….lousy Savimbi!!!

      • Savimbi

That doesn’t negate my point, and this isn’t the first time that it’s happened in SA, I was actually present during the same instances back in 94, so my comments are coming from experience rather than mere opinion, furthermore, how do you explain, that the Boers, a white minority still controls a large majority of your wealth? which is not to say that the same is not occurring in the rest of Africa, my point being, Native Africans committing gruesome attacks against their own brothers for something occupiers of their lands have done. you say they are Africans because their language is only spoken there, what about their origins? “Boer, (Dutch: “husbandman,” or “farmer”), a South African of Dutch, German, or Huguenot descent, especially one of the early settlers of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State..”
They’re only association to Africa is through settlement, and occupation fam!!!! But if you consider them your brothers than so be it.

      • S.Soga

You gotta realise that when one country is giving lucrative opportunities to foreigners, there’s bound to be conflict. Most countries have issues with immigrants. There will be sections that act inappropriately but you shouldn’t generalize, especially when so much was done to oppose such acts. Brothers were accommodated in other brother’s homes….

To answer your question, whites have had control of the economy for over 180 years, blacks have been ruling for just over 21 years….surely there’s a lot to do, don’t you think?

These folks are our brothers because they can speak the native’s language whilst you can’t…because you are from Angola…Savimbi.

      • Savimbi

Americans aren’t going around putting tires and burning immigrants alive are they? and criminally your government has done nothing to go after those responsible for the attacks. So tell me how effective were the so called protests against these attacks were. Furthermore, considering the atrocities they committed against your ancestors, how exactly does “language” equate to them being your brothers? thirdly, by this acceptance of these invaders, most if not all of your chiefs who naturally are rulers of the land have lost dominion over their perspective territories and are merely some symbol of past history. thirdly, I am not from Angola so try that again…Fam.

      • S.Soga

        1. No-one is defending the atrocities. Worse things are happening in Syria and North African coastlines to migrants. 2. The government has convicted the tyre story criminals. Google it. 3. No-one is denying the atrocities committed by white people….all over the world in fact. But, these people love us more than our black brothers in the rest of Africa. However small that love is. 4. Chiefs have never lost their dominion. We have the Zulu kingdom remember? 5. Why would you choose to call yourself Savimbi? What has he done for Africa? He has a bad reputation globally. I wonder about your character.

Brother, your problem is that you want to slander us without accurate information. I can’t accept that. Do your research first.

      • Q.

        ^FACTS!

    • Q.

I’m hearing white supremacy is alive and kicking in SA. Black folks still living in shantytowns, working subservient jobs, and taking sh!ts on the side of the road, meanwhile the white Afrikaaners are laid up in the lush suburbs. SMH …Why you disappointed in Mos though?

      • Savimbi

Exactly, I was there about 7-8 years ago. Here’s another kicker, right after apartheid ended, most whites moved their economy, businesses etc… outside of the city when the blacks began moving in, which in turn, turned the city centre into a complete slum. S. Soga is just one of those Eurocentric Africans. IMO, they might be worse than uncle toms, as they seem to reject the idea that Africa in general is still controlled by the European nations. one good SA to follow tho is Credo Mutwa, he has some great insights on this topic and is said to be one of the few last shamans living today…

      • Q.

Damn. And for a minute, I was under the impression that SA was socially progressive. What you described was the “white flight” phenomenon which took place in the U.S. in the 1950s! SMH
Man, what these coons and toms don’t realize is that they’re only extending the shelf-life of white supremacy, and are setting up their own children for more oppression.

      • S.Soga

Don’t believe that crap. Ain’t no coons and uncle toms here brother. We are the most socially progressive country in Africa. Hands down. Don’t believe otherwise. Brothers are balling in here.

      • Q.

I’ve seen photos and heard first-hand accounts from people who’ve been there: people are still living in shantytown corrugated tin-roof shacks with no plumbing, people defecating on the side of the roads, and people serving wealthy whites in the service industry like peasants. You can’t hide the truth. A few Black people balling doesn’t excuse the atrocious conditions most of the others are living in.

      • S.Soga

Dude, i’ve seen photos of black people living in the Bay Area. I couldn’t believe that was the US. The projects in New York have poor black people too. This is true in Europe as well. Black people are living under bad conditions globally homes. Not a South African problem.

There’s a good and bad side to all societies brother. Some are poor and some are thriving. That’s how it is globally.

      • S.Soga

Utter rubbish. You don’t know what you are talking about homes….South African blacks are probably more happier than Black Americans, never mind other Africans.

You living in the past hommie. We growing.

      • Savimbi

If they were so happy they wouldn’t be out in the streets burning other africans alive.

      • S.Soga

That’s not true homes. There are thriving blacks and struggling blacks. Some working as Doctors, CAs, Actuaries..etc professionals. Some aren’t there as yet. Just like everywhere in the world. Google it.

      • Q.

I’m sure there are Black professionals there. But when the minority white population controls a majority of the wealth, and lives better than the majority of the indigenous people, that’s called white supremacy, bro.

      • S.Soga

It is a problem brother, no doubt. However, you need to understand that change is a process and not an event. It takes time to correct 180 years + of injustice in 21 years of black rule. What i’m arguing against is the perception that in general, blacks are oppressed. There is no white supremacy issues, but there are income inequality issues….just like in the US.

      • Q.

Well, yes, Blacks in general, are oppressed. When people in their native land are living in squalor while the outsider is living in comfort as a result of economic dominance–that is oppression! I’m not sure you understand what white supremacy actually is; when a white European dominates an African in his own land, whether politically, economically, or governmentally, that IS white supremacy. It didn’t end with apartheid.

      • S.Soga

White supremacy means white people generally hold a belief that their race is superior than other races. Not necessarily domination.

As I said before, change is a process and not an event. The biggest telecommunication company (MTN) in AFRICA, was started and still run by black South Africans. Which other black nation can claim that, including black Americans?

      • Q.

That’s incorrect. White supremacy is the total institution of political and economic control which has been exercised by white Europeans over people of color over the past 500+ years. It is not a belief, it is the practical reality of modern life on Earth.

      • S.Soga

That’s colonization brother. Don’t confuse the two concepts.

      • Q.

Colonization was an attack arm of white supremacy. That was when the Europeans first dominated you. They are synonymous.

      • S.Soga

Let me help you: the word supremacy is derived from the word superior. Again, white supremacy states that the white race is more superior than other races. Its a belief that brings rise to laws such as ‘whites only beach’.

They are not similes. You can be colonized without being dominated. For example, when whites invaded, Kingdoms were never destroyed, they still exist to this day.

      • Q.

If the act of white European colonization of Africa is not rooted in the ambition to become a SUPERIOR RACE, then help me understand why these whites came to your land in the first place, murdering your men, raping your women, taking your land and natural resources, and giving you a false religion with their own image imposed on the idol, in order to rule your people?
And if you are merely colonized yet not DOMINATED, as you suggest, then why is it the minority population of whites are living in SUPERIOR conditions to that of the majority of indigenous South Africans in a post-Apartheid South Africa? Please educate me, because I need help understanding why. I need answers to both.

Man, you have to go to a whole different continent for robust creativity? No truer words uttered in the rap game than when Jay-z said, “cause a brother wear a kufi it don’t mean that he bright.” Some of these rappers feign to be socially conscious, but then you read what they have to say on Twitter, or IG and you begin to wonder if they even have common sense. To Mos Def’s credit, this appears to be more about ignorance of immigration laws than any real intent to possess a “fraudulent passport.” A World Passport is an actual travel document, it’s just not recognized in that country. At least that’s how I’m reading the tweets.

    • Q.

Nothing wrong with leaving the country due to an unsavory “social, political, economic climate.” e.g., Many Black artists back in the 30s and 40s emigrated to France due to the insane racial climate in the U.S. People seeking peace of mind or creative inspiration from foreign locales is not unheard of either (e.g., Dave Chappelle). IJS

  • Q.

Interesting to see so many “fans” going in on Mos over CHILD SUPPORT, knowing the U.S. child support system is known for raping men’s pockets.
