DJ Quik Says It’s “Unfair” Kanye West Is Credited For Bringing Back El DeBarge

(AllHipHop News) El DeBarge was among the many voices Kanye West recruited to appear on his latest album The Life Of Pablo. The 54-year-old singer-songwriter returned to the music scene by adding vocals to the track “Highlights.” However, there is one West Coast rap legend that feels Kanye should not get the praise for bringing attention back to DeBarge.

DJ Quik took to Twitter to express his belief that he shined a light on DeBarge before Ye. The Compton representative wrote, “I bought [sic] El DeBarge back 1st and got him paid. Kanye West gets all the credit. Unfair. I’m bout to do some blow and drink Jameson.”

The two artists have been friends and recording partners for many years. Quik featured DeBarge on his single “Hand In Hand.” The song appeared on the 1998 album Rhythm-al-ism.

Since that time, DeBarge released his own LP titled Second Chance in 2010 which featured a guest appearance by Fabolous. In addition, DeBarge made a surprise comeback at the 2010 BET Awards. The Michigan native performed a medley of hits from his group including “All This Love,” “I Like It,” and “Rhythm of the Night.”

Say what you want but on some real Shiite The Life of Pablo is one of the most progressive album in rotation right now. Ye once again keeps proving to the masses that his talent meter is heads above the rest. N!ggaz better step their games up because Yeezy haven’t even began to snap his warm ups off.

      LOL!

    • Papi Peligro

    Quik sounding really bitter now.

  • ZUBU

Quik is that brotha for real, and he is speaking the truth. Yet IMO he needs to stay of the internet, especially when he is getting bent…

    • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

The Divorce song off of Balance and Option feat. El Debarge was so dope, matter of fact that whole album was dope.

  • bigdoe6

Quik is the homie. Better beats and better sound quality than any track Kanye has ever created.

    • AL Dunbar

      Izzo was hot

    • atle fjeldstad

Quik is one of the greats for show

  • Chief J4

Kanye got some Axis 2 stuff going on, lol

  • Dark Matters

Quik, if no one noticed then you didn’t “bring Debarge back” bro.

  • In Black America Radio

The way you handle a situation like this is with TIMELINES
according to this article Quiik mention 1998 and 2010
but 2012 El Debage was arrested for drugs…………….so wouldnt that be a relapse and or him derailing from “coming back”? Ye have him on his 2016 album, so technically Ye DID bring him back.

    • atle fjeldstad

i think el debarge has played alot of piano on quiks albums. even on his last project..

      • In Black America Radio

        question (maybe im tripping)
is El Debage known as a singer or a pianist? i forget?

      • Lisa

Known more for singing, but his piano skills are top notch,.

      • atle fjeldstad

Word! In the visualizm (the quik documentary) he refers to el as a new Beethoven pr something

  • ancientGOD83

quik>dre better rapper, plays multiple instruments, can sing, engineer, production underrated forever…don’t believe me…watch dj quik live at the house of blues

    • Uncle Ruckus

Yet the crazy thing is he has said himself he’s in awe of Dre! I have my suspicions that a lot of Dre’s work has Quik’s touch without Quik getting the credit. Thinking California Love here. Also, I only recently found out Quik did So Addictive for Truth Hurts which was MASSIVE

      • ancientGOD83

he said he gave dre plenty of sounds for chronic 2001, and got NO credit…he is in awe of the credit dre gets… dre can records a turd fallin the toilet and folks will be like “ooh shit that new dre is the shit” pun intended… that Compton album was dumpster juice, yet it got great ratings… dre is handpicked in the industry, not taking away from his talent…but it doesn’t mean he is the best

      • atle fjeldstad

from what i understand they all say david blake on the credits.. but if you listen to the trauma album, you can hear that dre has used quik on alot. quik actually took the credit for the handclaps on in da club, so i guess he probably made that one to. and one of the albums i heard dre got alot of credit for (all eyez on me) was mostly mixed by quik and some other dude.

      • Smashit

You 100 on that Compton album but people rated it like it was best thing from Cali in the past 10 years smh

      • Uncle Ruckus

I hope you didn’t think I was trying to say I think Dre is the best producer? He’s possibly the producer of say 3 of my favourite tracks ( G thang, Gin and Juice and California Love remix) but I think Quik’s work, especially on his Safe + Sound album (his best album for me). I think the point I was making (which I think you missed) is that despite him being as good as he is, he’s spoken highly of Dre. I THINK I saw this on a youtube interview. If not the Young Jack Thriller one then some other one.

  • Golgo 13

how he sed it u would think it was like this yr of last yr he did this but this was yrs ago

  • Uncle Ruckus

For all the things Quik has done in music, THIS is the thing he wants credit for? I knew I should have backed Mc Eiht to win!

  • Papi Peligro

Naw BET BROUGHT BACK EL DEBARGE. Then crack brought back El Debarge and he had to cancel all his sh!t. That ninja should have been one of the All Time Greatest.

  • El Debarge ain’t back. He’s just as coked out as ever. Kanye just put a little Coke money in his pocket.

  • Ike’s Mood

Blow? Damn Quik…it’s hard in the music business, huh?

  • Smashit

Quik next time you say some shit that makes sense don’t say that you had to be high to say it smdh
