EXCLUSIVE: Royce Da 5’9” Addresses Saying Drake Is Not A Top Lyricist (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Royce Da 5’9” was among the Hip Hop representatives that shared his opinion on Drake’s place on the list of greatest emcees following the Quentin Miller ghostwriting allegations. Just like Ice Cube, Kxng Crooked, and A$AP Rocky, Royce expressed a rapper using someone else to write his verses diminishes his position in the G.O.A.T. discussion.

Despite reiterating a viewpoint that has been conveyed by other people, Royce faced some backlash for his comments about Drake. AllHipHop.com caught up with the Detroit spitter to see whether he felt the need to clear up saying the OVO leader is not a top-tier lyricist.

“I don’t think there’s anything to clarify,” states Royce. “If you look at the interview, I said that the way that [Drake] creates is a dope way of creating. I said I personally get fulfillment from writing.”

The Slaughterhouse member added, “I’m not going to keep explaining myself. I’ve been in the game for over 15 years. I don’t have to explain myself to anybody.”

Royce Da 5’9″ is preparing to release his Layers album on April 18. Pre-order the LP on iTunes.

  • Translation:

“Yeah I said it! If Drake don’t like it, come see me…”

    Response from Drake’s camp:

    {crickets}

    • Executive

Drake’s girl scout groupie boys wouldn’t harm a fly with a sledgehammer.

      • Anthony Mason

That’s for sure. They are all a bunch of fly on the wall blending in with the wallpaper niggas smoking vape pens catching his groupie crumbs…

I’m glad weeknd got out from under him and got his own shine. He is going to surpass Drake in popularity if he already hasnt.

    • TheAfroRican

Drake’s fans are just as soft as he is. No worries.

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

royce 5’9 – pain is his only good song

    • haha

  • RichFromBX

he’s right, nothing further to explain.

Saying Drake is a great lyricist is like saying that Beyonce is a great song writer.

    • Celz

Stop hating and listen to the music – Drake fan

Yea, but he’s getting money though! – another Drake fan

      And my favorite…

If the name is on the song credits, it’s not ghost writing so it’s cool – a stupid Drake fan

  • The Wackness Vs Dope

well while we are on the point, Royce is not a top lyricist, none of his homeless band mates from slaughterhouse are either. Rapping a lot about nothing, doesn’t make you dope. Corny punchlines don’t make you dope. You can listen to an entire Royce verse and when you break down and get past all the tongue twisters and lines none of them mean anything or really say anything significant that makes you get any type of feeling like when you listen to a Jay verse that’s dropping jewels. Thats the problem with these guys they don’t flip sacred treasures anymore.

    • Celz

That’s your opinion. No they aren’t Jay Z caliber but they are better than pretty much anyone else. And making generalizations about 4 rappers who have been in the game so long is foolish. You’re wrong about saying any of them have one style, you’re so wrong there is no point in even proving it. 10 minutes on YouTube shows that. Joe Buddens and Crooked get just as deep and often deeper than Jay Z. And Jay is the GOAT IMO.. Listen to Crooked I can’t breathe.

Royce is a legend who still drops heat to this day. I was listening to him in highschool.. In the 90s..

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

no thats not my opinion thats a fact and plenty of peoples ears agree otherwise he would be up in the discussion of the greats – his a “my miracle lyrical” type rapper. you wanna talk multiples then you look at someone like andree 3K he is ridiculous you look at eminem before the 8 Mile Album. THAT is good use of multiples. It’s almost like… a computer. It’s a tool. Like it doesn’t make you the guy who invented the internet just because you use a fancy lap top. It’s just a tool. In rap there are many tools one can use – those slaughter house guys use a set of tools but disregard a whole other bunch of tools. Like wheres the substance in what your saying like Jay or Em before 8 Mile Pac Scarface wheres the style like 3K, Jay, MF Doom, Lupe. Where the imagination and inventiveness in your lexicon like raekwon – he can paint the most vivid pictures using the fewest words. It’s just like binary code rap. As Jay would say you niggas just rhyme.

      • Celz

You sounds like a female. Opinions are subjective. Many prople disagree with you. It’s like you calling Scottie wack because Jordan is better. No shyt Andre 3000 raps better than Crooked I. But how about you name some better lyricists who are RELAVANT today.. There aren’t many. Cyhi and King Los is pretty much it. Kendrick and J Cole are better rappers than slaughterhouse but not lyricists.

You don’t dictate which styles are superior to others. Who you think sharpened Eminem’s sword? Like Joe Buddens didn’t go head to head with Jay in their friendly battle. Knock it off. Slaughterhouse is complete and is easily top 5 crews ever in lyricism. I don’t know if anyone could survive a battle with them dudes.

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

NO U sound like a female. SKILLS are not subjective. either you got it or you don’t your either Eminem or Vanilla Ice, a person can either do a back flip off a moving train or they can’t, this ain’t no Soviet Union socialism of rap skills. Look at the creativity of Raekwon – Canal Street , the visual imagery and imagination of word play the inventiveness while still saying something dope. the skill it takes to do that is why no one else can do it. Royce couldn’t do that. Just face it some people are not as creative some people don’t need Diddy to teach them how to create like Royce. See him like “ooo diddy taught me how to write and re write” fark type of MC in top ranks got tips on RAPPING from diddy, where they do that at?

      • Celz

You’re a fan who doesn’t know how to rap.. Lol what am I even doing here? Take care bro..

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

why would i need to know how to rap? it’s like saying you have eyes but don’t know how to look. Do you even know how your processing all that light and breaking it down into different wave lengths?

      • TRUTH SPEAKER

What you are saying is like Action Bronson vs. Ghostface. On a superficial level they might sound the same. But people that really knows whats up peep that Ghost is actually saying something. Dropping jewels, telling stories, speaking on life, painting pictures. Creating and advancing culture, Making art.

Action Bronson is just putting words together vocally. Not really saying anything that has any real weight. Royce is like that. It might be “true hiphop”, but it’s disposable.

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

        YESSSSS
HALLLEEELUUUUUJAAAAA! that is spot on. Even a great e)(ample. i can’t listen to action even though he raps good cos he doesn’t say shit. It’s such a waste of great beats and great flow and word play. He has nothing to say. Like my two fav songs of his are Action Bronson – Rolling Thunder and Action Bronson – 9-24-11. You listen to those songs and they are so good everything is damn near raekwon perfect – should could have made it on to only built 4 cuban lyn. But one problem – he doesn’t say shit. i love listening to the songs the flows everything but at the end of it you just have a bunch of random sentences that don’t paint anything. Like random unrelated photos that tell no story about anywhere or anyone. If he just kept all that the flow beat and everything and just changes the words to mean something those songs would be damn near nas perfect…But he didn’t say shit. His bars are like “shoe glass book cup tup map look bird pie cake mate skate car rain water passport drink blue”

      • TRUTH SPEAKER

my god man you get it. I am not alone in this world. Even tho Eminem’s music sucks balls lol

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

that’s why i say it like B.C. . eminem B.8mile i refuse to acknowledge anything after 8 mile everything before tho was god mode rap

    • Keyser Soze

I understand your point… But lyricism is subjective it’s levels to the shit… it’s Jay, Nas, Andre 3K.. it’s Pac Scarface… it’s ghost and Rae.. it’s Lupe Jay E … etc while I don’t think the depth of their lyricism (slaughter house) is consistently on point with the aforementioned.. You can’t deny the brothers can put words together better than 90% of the game.. imo✌

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

no he can’t put them together better than 90% – his a “my miracle lyrical” type rapper. you wanna talk multiples then you look at someone like andree 3K he is ridiculous you look at eminem before the 8 Mile Album. THAT is good use of multiples. It’s almost like… a computer. It’s a tool. Like it doesn’t make you the guy who invented the internet just because you use a fancy lap top. It’s just a tool. As Jay would say you niggas just rhyme.

      • Keyser Soze

You saying the same thing I said my G… If you leave out the exceptional lyricist like the ones I named you not gonna find a long list of cats who can out rap these brothers is my point… they not top tier Jay em nas redman type shit… but definitely they on that next tier

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

Andree 3K – play the guitar verse alone which is not even close to his best verse = Royce whole career + Slaughter Houses members entire careers and verses ever written

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

stop it man – raekwon – canal street. that’s lyrical

    • The City

Not a fan of the multiples huh?

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

you wanna talk multiples then you look at someone like andree 3K he is ridiculous you look at eminem before the 8 Mile Album. THAT is good use of multiples. It’s almost like… a computer. • The City

Lol that Jay reference was classic.

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

the closest Royce came to being a dope lyricist was Royce 5’9 – Pain

    • TRUTH SPEAKER

it’s true. Royce isn’t even ill on a superficial wordplay level with multiples or witty metaphors or similes. He just raps because “im a rapper and im real hiphop”, What is he really saying? Rapping for the sake of rapping. It’s what I call “babble rap”,

      • The Wackness Vs Dope

        lyrical, miricale, spirital,

  • Executive

Finally a man with some nuts, when he said he ain’t gotta explain that’s all he gotta say.

  • Anthony Mason

Royce is allowed to say this. He is right too.

Drake had some deep mixtapes years ago but now he does the cha cha and who knows where the lyrics came from. Type of nigga to tell his mom she put too much rosemary in the chicken and storm away from the dinner table…

    • I_AM_Houston

lol comedy. on another note niggas put rosemary in chicken? lol ima sprinkle some on a few wings later and see what thats about lol

      • Anthony Mason

Bruh, rosemary, minced garlic, lemon zest, sea salt ,garlic powder ,cilantro, olive oil. Coat it….

In the oven 400…top with parm at the end. Throw back in oven once turned off. Serve with dill ranch dressing (onion garlic ranch dill dry Saracha seasoning)…

      • I_AM_Houston

See I ususally use sea salt, black pepper, onion powder and fresh well grounded garlic cloves, light garlic salt and olive oil and now and then. You changed the game with lemon zest, rosemary and cilantro. I screenshot the shit out of that. I gotta try it Im a food head. This may be the first time people broke down recipes on this site lol…oh and the sauce is onion, garlic, mixed in any ranch dressing along with dry saracha seasoning?

      • Anthony Mason

Yeah. I love dry Siracha . Try dill in the sauce too…

      • Anthony Mason

        You cook that up yet?

      • I_AM_Houston

aww yeah that was a winner!

      • Anthony Mason

Drake probably has never cooked a meal in his life but everyone knows that hopefully…

  • TheAfroRican

Let ’em know, Royce! It’s good to see there aren’t any wave riders in the music industry.

  • Rozay23

There’s an old saying “When your good at something you tell people but when your great at something people will tell you” Drake is not a G.O.A.T. as a lyricist but he has potential to be as an artist. M.J. is considered a G.O.A.T. as an artist so Drake has a long way to go before he reach that status.

ROYCE IS SPEAKING THE TRUTH BUT HE IS NOT RELEVANT ENOUGH FOR ANYBODY TO CARE!!!

    • I_AM_Houston

wouldnt matter if Hov said it. You cant make people care if they dont care about the process. Im sure nobody tripping over their clothes or shoes being made in sweatshops either as long as it fit nice. It just is what it is now.

      • dbfromdc

I WOULD MATTER IF HOV SAID DRAKE IS TRASH!!! PEOPLE WOULD LISTEN TO THAT!!! NOBODY CARES ABOUT WHAT ROYCE THE 5’9 HAS TO SAY ABOUT DRAKE!!! THOSE ARE THE FACTS!!!

      • Real Hip Hop folks do

      • Live Well

Totally agree. Obama could say it and his fans wouldn’t care. They care about the product, not the process. This what happens when an art form becomes a 50 billion dollar industry.

    • cza jones

Lets take that a step further – WHAT HE SAID Is NOT RELEVANT ENOUGH FOR ANYBODY TO CARE!!!

Kids today don’t care about lyrics. even if it was form a so-called credible artist it would still fall on deaf ears. Tyga, future, drake are still going to be hot single material and this conversation, like Royce to commercial kids, will be forgotten in a fast minute

Dude knows how hard it is gaining credibility as a top lyricist and he knows how frustrating it is to not be supported as those who don’t follow the same path he and other real MCs have. Unfortunately much of the rap fans out here could care less about actual writing skills.

    • Chyze

That’s cuz Royce is a lyricist….that’s based in Hip Hop. Rap fans just wanna hear good music. Drake creates good music that a good chunk of ppl like. Ppl say it’s cuz he’s a Jew…that’s a weak @ss cop out. I ain’t never liked or appreciated anything just cuz a group of ppl told me I should. Royce like the underground artists in the 90’s…the majority never popped cuz that backpack shyt is hard 2 listen 2. I’m glad it exists but I appreciate good music 2. It’s always been about the music. Ppl listen cuz of the beat, then they learn the hook almost right away, then the lyrics…that’s the reality of it. If u want someone 2 help u remember a song u quote the hook…not a random bar cuz only true heads would know the song by any one bar.

      • Markus

        True indeed.

      • TRUTH SPEAKER

People listened in the old days cuz of the beat too. CREAM, Warning,Flava In Your Ear, Ain’t No Halfsteppin’, T.R.O.Y., etc etc.

Good hiphop is good hiphop. It is not hard to listen to. Problem with a lot of supposed backpack rap nowadays is that the production sucks and has no soul. The only new school underground guy hitting with consistent dope production now is Meyhem Lauren. Compare his beats to any of Royce’s work to see the difference.

      • Chyze

I gotta check him out. I hadn’t heard of him b4 but I’ll always give real Hip Hop my ear and attention.

  • STEPH

HE’S NOT! WTF? What’s the big fu-kin deal. The yellow nigga is a performer…(He performs others work really well) Royce is a true lyricist and the shit most likely pisses him off.

  • TRUTH SPEAKER

What Royce is saying is redundant. He’s not making some grand statement. No one thinks Drake is one of the top lyricists in the game. People like him as a artist, they think he makes good songs. But who really considers him a lyricist or listens to him for his lyrics?

And for the record a great emcee may not necessarily be a great lyricist.

For the record Royce is neither a great emcee nor lyricist.

    • king joe

I disagree…Royce is a great lyricist and emcee, but we’ve had this disagreement before…right?

      • TRUTH SPEAKER

What’s a song where he kills it lyrically and flow wise?

      • Mo Deebo

Bad Meets Evil – “All I Think About”

        and “Writer’s Block”

      • TRUTH SPEAKER

“All I think about” was horrendous imo. And neither song have great lyricism. Although I love the Primo beat for the Writer’s Block remix.
