The NAACP kicked off its 98th annual convention this weekend and the lyrics in Hip-Hop music took center stage.

Chairman Julian Bond opened the convention on Saturday (July 8) and referenced rapper Jay-Z during a news conference, while pioneers Eric B. and Kurtis Blow are leading a ceremonial burying of the "n word."

"We don't believe it's a violation of the First Amendment to say to somebody you ought not to talk that way, you ought not denigrate women, you ought not condemn people because of the color of their skin," Bond said during a press conference on opening day. "I heard somebody say that when Jay-Z talks about ho's, he gets a gold record. When Don Imus talks about ho's, he gets fired. We believe in equal justice and equal justice for everyone."

Meanwhile rap pioneers Eric B. and Kurtis Blow will lead a mock funeral for the "n word" today (July 9).

Participants will march from Cobo Center to Hart Plaza, where they will bury the word as part of the NAACP's "STOP" campaign, which is aimed at ending negative images of blacks in popular media, not just rap music.

The burial comes almost 60 years after a similar funeral in Detroit for the Jim Crow Laws.

Prominent speakers include: U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, Eddie Levert, Mo'Nique, Michael Chertoff, secretary, U.S. Department of Homeland Security; Soledad O'Brien , anchor and special correspondent for CNN; Bishop Philip Robert Cousin, Sr. , Senior Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; Kwame M. Kilpatrick, Mayor, City of Detroit; Julian Bond, Chairman, NAACP National Board of Directors; and Dennis C. Hayes , Interim NAACP President and CEO.

Over 8,000 people will attend the convention, which started July 7 and ends July 12.

Fuck the NAACP. if they were so interested in the advancement of "colored people" ( i can't beleive they still call themselves that) they wouldn't have dropped the ball and allowed our children to get in the state that they are in. They are complicit patronization of Black people and the weakening of their collective self reliance. Then when they get called on being th elypocrites they are they go run out and find someone to throw under the bus. They pulled the same shit Al Sharpton pulled. Black leaders my ass.

it's very rare that a rapper will say all women are hoes. Hoes exist. Pretty women is about a prostitute. There are many movies featuring hoes. Maury got a new episode everyday with hoes of all races that can't find they baby father. Children don't come out the womb listening to rap. they dont come out hating and degrading either. Where was the NAACP when over a third of New Orleans couldn't read? Then they got the nerve to get mad at a Katrina response

Why don't these people just admit that They overreacted to the Imus thing instead of looking for targets to witchhunt

The NAACP should go after all those LIQUOR companies for advertising in the black community with half nude black women and other female races.

Lets not forget about the cigarette companies. All that degrading of women to sell their products. THE NAACP has nothing to say about that, but they want rappers = scapegoat.

All that promorion of Liquor and tabacoo. Liquor is a cause of date rape, out of wedlock childbirths (due to being incoherent), drunk driving, alcohol abuse, domestiv violence and family decline.

TALK ABOUT THAT NAACP! ! ! !

GO AFTER THOSE GUYS, IF NOT YOU'RE JUST A BUNCH OF (pick your own degrading name).

Imma play devils advocate on this one.

Change starts from within, and calling for the cease of a by us for a word that was created by them to degrade us, is not by any means wrong or irrelevant.

Did people overreact to Imus, maybe. Should the N world be gone, hell yeah.

I mean on the real, why NOT bury it? Why NOT stop calling women whores in music.

You say that whores exist and rappers are not calling all women that, I see no distinction being made in the music. No one is specifically referring to street walkers. They are referring to all women, especially ones that do not feel the whole thug image.

The NCAAP doing what they have to do, why you all cant respect their gangsta?

So if Dre, Ice Cube, Yella & Ren get together for a reunion tour will they just be "WA"?

And what about subsequent publishing of their CDs? Will they change the logo to be "%#WA"

Can I still listen to all those great spoken word joints by the Last Poets?

I need some further instruction on this one. We need a pamplet or something "what to do when "Nigger/Nigga" is dead and buried". Can we some new "Nigga" manuals?

It's a shame Don Imus was successfully able to deflect negative attention away from himself and divert it towards rap music. Don Imus is a grown ass man, he's prolly felt that way towards women ALL his life. Yet it's rap music's fault he said that right?

Why should the N word be gone? White people are not morons, they don't need no help from Black peopel to stop saying nigger. they say it cause they want to and it's they right. people ar eresponsible for being niggers not the word itself.

I dont see italians rallying around stoppage of dag and guinea. I dont see women lobbbying not to call each other bitch. To ban nigger is an implicit statment that black people are unable to defend themselves and unable to think and decide their own destiny. it's more patronage.

You can take any word out of a vocabulary but if the same sentiment behind the word continues to exist what good have you done? There are many names that are degrading to women and black people alike, merely putting a moritorium on words is like putting a band aid on a mortal flesh wound. Its useless, and actually a little intellectually sloppy. Who cares if they no longer call me a N word if you still treat me like one.

there are people saying that there will still be hoes and bitches. but who am i to judge them. if a ho is a female who fucks around, then shouldn't a dude who fucks around also be a ho? if i had a daughter, i wouldn't want any1 to refer to her as a ho. so why should i refer to another woman as a ho? respect is prime. and if we go on calling our fellow black women hoes and bitches, how do we expect white people to respect our women?

The NAACP has turned into house niggers. (Notice I didn't say "niggas"). They are using the same old tactic that blew the cocaine epedemic out of control. They ignored it how long thinking it would just "go away" hahaha Yeah right. now all of a crack addiction is a disease and drug dealers are the angels of dispair. Which is true but when it was controllable they did nothing. When hiphop was moldable they said it was bad and unnaceptable and now that it really is they turn their back on their sons instead of saying no this is the way.

To any dumbass that brings up the question of "how come Blaks can say Nigga but Whites can't" There is a band called Uncle Kracker and there is a country dance called the Honky Took Stomp, and better yet Larry the Cable and Jeff Foxworthy, have a Redneck comedy tour. They have turned every racial word we've used into at the least an avenue to create revenue. So why can;t we have Niggas With Attitudes, why can't my best friend be my Nigga? Because White America did what it did in Iraq, They wanted a peice of the N-word, kind of like how the wanted that oil. When they couldn't get it legally the forcefully took it and cut even the Iraqis of from using it. Anyway FUCK a group of Black idiots that still use the term colored and trying tell us what is setting us bac. FUCK the NAACP

Sticks and Stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. WORDS WILL NEVER HURT ME? This little nursery phrase is one of the biggest lies that have ever been told. Broken bones are mended and fixed everyday. The body recovers and life goes on. A nuclear stone, called the A-BOMB was dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, yet Japan is still a major economic power. Millions of Jews were beaten with the stick of inferiority and cooked in Hitler's ovens, but they too still retained power. They still have power because their names weren't destroyed.
Our names have been stolen, changed, and given back to us in the form of a label or brand. It wasn't enough for white men to just refer to us as slaves, they had to BRAND us with a special name: NIGGER....DERIVED FROM THE LATIN NEGRO- (Black, Black object)- Which itself is derived from the Greek word NECRO- meaning (dead, or death.)
It also implies that we have no homeland or history beyond being conquered. Caucasians, Mongoloids, etc have NAMES that refer to a land, a history, an experience that goes beyond just being slaves or a conquered group of people.

And I do agree that the meaning and significance of words change as we change history. The fact that we have taken Nigger and replaced the "er" with an "A" is a testament to our instinct to survive even after being labeled with a name that originates from DEATH. It doesn't make it ok though.

As a collective of hip-hop enthusiasts, many of us have agreed to accept the negative as affirmation of our survival against all odds. That's the conditioning of "SYSTEMS" in which none of us "cogs" in this hip-hop machine want to stop the wheels of our "Nigga" system from turning. Hip-Hop also gave the "Invisible Men" that Ralph Ellison eloquently described in his book so long ago a way to be visible through the use of two turntables and a Mic. So we loudly proclaimed that "The NIGGA is still here!" whether that was good or bad.
White men responded, "Oh yeah, the Nigger is still here; And in the same way that "niggas" rob each other to survive in our urban jungles, the white man robbed NIGGERS of our publishing, beat us for distribution of OUR product, and still reserve the right to Censor us when they choose to!

Even knowing all that, we get angrier with Julian Bond and the NAACP than we do with the white man who branded us with that NIGGER name in the first place. Niggers survive, NiggAs survive with an attitude about it, but can a Nigga progress to a position of dominance in this global economy and community? That's what we should ask OURSELVES and be sure of before we crucify the NAACP and continue to declare ourselves NIGGAS.

I think a lot of people are missing the point: the simple fact is, Don Imus said something fucked up, and it suddenly became very obvious that it would be very hypocritical if we were to castigate him for it, and not turn the mirror on our own behavior and the things we promote. Burying the N-word may seem a little cheesy, but I think it's something symbolic, and is about policing ourselves and recognizing the impact that our music has on the world around us.

Incidentally, I thought it was odd that Starr (formerly of Hot 97) got all up in J-Lo's ass (figuratively, of course) for using the N-word back in the day - his beef was that she's Puerto Rican and shouldn't be able to use the word in her song. Somebody should bring that up with Pun, Fat Joe, Cuban Link, etc., etc.

Oh, and another thing - if the current crop of Black leaders is so terrible, how come nobody else is stepping up to fill the void? Challenge the status quo!

First and foremost, I want to state that I have been an active and vivid reader of this site, and I enjoy logging on every night and reading the news, rumors, post, etc. I wanted to make a comment about the NAACP stand and views about the N word, or H word or any derogatory words that plague our society and what I have to say is just a little insight of my opinion and views of the issues. I do applaud the NAACP for their efforts of trying to rekindle the social awareness and reform that is needed in our black community, but how they are going about it is all wrong. NAACP are really just downplaying the big and broader issues that face our community. I feel we should target issues about poverty level, lack of education, crime, substance abuse, health education(HIV/AIDS and STDs) that have such a tremendous negative downward affect on our community. These issues should be addressed. Instead of trying to gain politcal respect from whites and a pat on the back from financial influential blacks (Oprah, etc.) we should face these issues face on. Why do most celebrities go outside the country and establish these schools and charity work and organization, instead of helping our community. We need to work on the internal before trying to fix the external. I am of Nigerian descent so I am not hating on the fact that they do go to these countries, but why so much hate, jealousy and envy in our country and our community, just a thought....

But we have to take that stance that we want to change inorder for progress to take place....
