An upcoming concert in Auckland, New Zealand featuring rapper Ice Cube has come under fire by a local politician who is running for Mayor.

Manukau mayorial candidate Len Brown is reportedly putting pressure on the CEO of the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau to cancel the August 22 performance, alleging that Ice Cube's music promotes violence and gang culture that the youth will replicate.

"Ice Cube brings a gangsta message to our community via his gangsta rap," Brown said in a statement. "This message promotes gangs, gang violence and drugs. We don’t want this in our homes. We don’t want it on our streets. Our community is taking a stand on these issues. There is massive energy and resource dedicated to getting on top of gang activity in many parts of South Auckland. For once we have a cohesive partnership of community, government and police working together to confront this challenge and move things forward for our young people. So let’s be clear we don’t need a gangsta rappa [sic] working against the future interests of our young. It’s time to freeze out the Ice Cube."

Camilla Anderson, the promoter of the event, disputed Brown's allegations against Ice Cube, noting that the rapper has shed most of his gangster imagery and has had success as a mainstream actor and director.

Anderson also said that Brown's attempt to cancel the planned concert was actually an election tactic.

Ice Cube's appearance at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre is one of several dates the rapper is booked to play in New Zealand and Australia.

The rapper is scheduled to visit Brisbane, Sydney, Perth and Melbourne.

He will then head to Japan for two dates in Nagoya and Sapporo.

In related news, Ice Cube's lighthearted family comedy Are We Done Yet will hit stores on DVD tomorrow (August 7).

Looks like people pasts are catching up to them.  Cube can't deny anything these people say b/c its all on record.  It is sad that people are using someones past to stop them from making money, and they use that for their own gain, but it is what it is.  So rappers keep going talking about drugs this and murder that, and keep wondering why the feds are looking at you.  You did it to yourself, some of you fools are snitching on yourself with your raps.  Yes you are reporting what you see and what you have done, but if you were never caught why bring that stuff back up into the public.  These people will always try to find a way of holding us back and our music is just one way.  It does not matter what Ice Cube does now his NWA and post NWA music will always get brought back up.

it's New Zealand.  "Straight Outta Compton" was probably just released last tuesday.  They probably won't get "Are We There Yet?" until another 15 years.  I hear stone-washed jeans are the shit down there right now and the Terminator 2 did well in its opening in theaters last Friday.

What More Can I say said:

Politicians build carrers off of issues that they believe are a concern to white America/ New Zealand, in this case. Since Imus everyone is putting on their armor and taking aim at hip hop. Last time this happened Rudy Giuliani cemented his career by locking up blacks with the use of the RICO Law. If hip hop dosen't begin policing ourselves and checking one another, hip hop will never be the same as we know it.

@What More Can I say

I disagree. What hip-hop has to do is start to go INDEPENDENT. When you fool with the majors and depend on selling a lot of records...you will feel the hate so much more and feel the pressure to be edited and compromise yourself. If you are Independent an remain Black Owned and Brand what you do...hatred can't stop you, it will only fuel you. Rap music can't be stopped dogg. Don't compromise it's voice.

We agree that change must begin, but f**k holding your tongue. They want us to shut up, but last time I checked, they wasn't trippin on what goes down on these streets. Don't be fooled by the Uncle Tom's telling cats to hate on rap mayne...it's about getting these streets improved and getting ALL Black people to a better place. This hating on rap ish is gone separate the street ni**as from the Bougy ni**as and it's fittin to be field ni**a vs. House ni**a's all over again.

A House divided can not stand.

!!! HOLD THA FUCK UP !!!

its not like the whole of New Zealand is against this concert. it is ONE politicians views.

I'm from New Zealand i know that this concert is going to be huge and most of the public is supporting it. it would only be a small percentage of people that are against it.

I know alot of WHITE full grown adults who have nothing against hip hop, they actually enjoy the music.

don't go thinking the whole of New Zealand is against Hip Hop because IT AINT. if anything, hip hop would probably be the most listened to genre of music in New Zealand by Youth's. AIGHT!

IT USUALLY ISN'T THE MAJORITY. BUT THE POLITICIANS ARE THE ONES WHO MAKE THE HEADLINES. NEVER THOSE OF US WHO SUPPORT OUR CULTURE.
