Last night, DTP’s Chaka Zulu introduced his new protege, India Shawn. With a voice that her fans compare to silk and melodies that are purely organic, the Trini-American beauty performed music from her debut project, Origin. India started her set with No One to Feel which transitioned into a cover of John Legend’s hit song, Tonight. The songstress continued to wow the crowd with not only her charm and charisma, but with also the spiritual / emotional connection she has with her music. Her second performance of No Saint, which was based off a real life story, gave music fans insight about her past relationship problems. India closed her set with her latest single, I’m Alive.

Bermuda songbird Canjelae. Known for her unique blend of or R&B, pop and rock and roll, Canjelae began her performance with a cover of Usher’s Bad Girl. The sultry artist closed her set with new music titled First Time and Promise Me.

Audiences were also kept entertained by up-and-coming comedian Mario Tory, and the legendary, Joe Clair. Also in attendance were Big Tigger, Keisha Knight-Pulliam, Kawan Prather-SVP of A&R at Atlantic Records, San Diego Chargers, Takeo Spikes, and more.

A truly great live show is measured by the sum of its parts and not simply a fantastic headliner. Hailing from Montreal, Canada is the mesmerizing newcomer Lina Gatineau. This impressive vocalist mixed between original songs and one stirring cover of Erykah Badu’s 1997 classic breakout hit “Tyrone”. At one point the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles graduate began to direct the lyrics of “Tyrone” at two gentlemen in the front without laughing or breaking character. The true standout  moment was the opener, her unabashedly personal song on an indecisive ex-boyfriend entitled “Frontin’”. Over a seductively brooding bass guitar Gatineau’s angelic voice gets raw:

“Remind me why I put up with this,

bulls**t you pull I know a’int legit.”

Yazarah made sure every person at SOBs left with her burned into their memories. The veteran R&B vocalist has been a backup singer for Erykah Badu, released four solo albums and now is apart of the multi-genre collective The Foreign Exchange with Little Brother’s Phonte. Her charisma was apparent from the start as she was carried to the stage through the crowd on a man’s shoulder wearing a colorful kufi.  Nineteen months removed from giving birth, Yazarah and her powerful vocals were riveting as she went through a few Prince classics (“Purple Rain”, “Little Red Corvette”) an original soulful ballad (“Starships”) and a few other covers. She made you feel her pain with stories of wanting to throw herself at “the walls of life” hoping to die. She made you laugh  by saying she needs positive reenforcement mid-song. She was a consummate performer.

Then there was Jesse.

This man took his hair out of a bun into a wild mane and the entire crowd screamed for more. It was that type of night. From the love-struck middle aged woman in the front to the boisterously dancing young woman by the back bar area, Jesse had everyone in SOBs under his spell. Making them sway with a smooth rendition of Andre 3000′s “Prototype”. Using an engaging call-and-response in an extended performance of the “Amorous” to have the jam packed SOBs sing his words.

Even with repeated microphone issues and some visible miscommunication with his effects guy, Jesse and his various vocal tones made for a wildly entertaining night. However, it was not clear if this was by design or impulse but Jesse’s set felt as if it went a few songs past its welcome even with a raucous closing performance of “Tabloids”.

But when you’re following awe-inspiring talent and having women yell “do more, we paid for it” the urge to overextend is a hard temptation to pass for a genuinely passionate singer such as Jesse Boykins III.

The perpetually jovial Hip-Hop historian/drummer/everything Questlove said this around 11 pm to hundreds of people who had been standing in sardine formation for hours waiting for a 9pm show to start. Mick Boogie did an exceptional job entertaining the near riotous crowd with an expert blend of old school cuts from almost any and every artist that ever participated in the Soulaquarian movement. However, with no opening act and the crowd body heat reaching critical levels people began to plan exit plans. Some concert goers were even overheard giving the reclusive genius until 11pm to materialize or he would be replaced with DVR viewings of “Girls”.

Once the 5’6, 38-year-old phenom emerged dressed in all black like The Omen with Questlove in tow (sporting a “Free Pussy Riot” shirt) disgruntled sighs quickly turned to jubilant yells.  Before his ravishing opening cover of Sly and the Family Stone’s “Let Me Have It All”. Before his beautifully controlled wailing high notes on Voodoo‘s ”The Root”. Before the show really started, all there was were two men and hundreds of cheers.

Then history began.

Unofficial moderator Questlove informed the crowd from the beginning this performance will resemble the numerous jam sessions him and D’angelo have when recording music. That feel permeated every facet of their performance. Whether it be the unspoken back and forth joking between two longtime friends during songs such as The Funkadelics’ “Cosmic Slop” or how each song bled into the next, the performance always retained this organic feel.

The set list took the gleeful spectators through classics from D’angelo’s two masterful albums 1995′s Brown Sugar and 2000′s epochal game changer Voodoo and also covers of bands that influenced the brilliant singer.  D’angelo’s vocal command was as crisp as ever with only a few spots during a cover of  The Ohio Players’ “Our Love Has Died” showing signs of rust natural with such a prolonged absence from regular live performances. An underrated talen of his is his expert musicianship and the way he manipulated the Fender Rhodes and Hohner D6 Clavinet while belting out intricate vocal patterns was mesmerizing. The big voice did not match the sheepish demeanor D’angelo displayed throughout the night.

Following a rendition of “Really Love”, the packed Brooklyn Bowl crowd applauded so loudly Questlove and D’angelo could not communicate, prompting the always loquacious drummer to deliver the night’s most heartfelt and revelatory moment.

“Keep clapping. Let him know he is loved or y’all might have to wait until 2044 for the next album.”

There was a microphone in the center of the stage that was not used for one single song. D’angelo, the emblem of the golden era in neo-soul returns to Brooklyn for the first time in over a decade and opts to play on the side instead of center. This was not simply another test run for a D’Angelo re-acclimating himself to not only the grind of performing but the realization of his immutable impact.  This was a reclusive genius coming out of hiding to see not if he still had it but if the people still wanted it.

He only spoke one word in the center mic, a singular “yes” at the end of jam session. He was answering Questlove’s question “Is the album almost done?”

Besides a few soft spoken “Thank You’s” and one  ”I love you too” he let the music speak. After the last cymbals crash on the epic Voodoo closer “Africa” and the two men returned to the backstage area, fans did not have to wait 10 years for a follow up performance but rather a few minutes for the encore. D’angelo and Questlove capped the night off with a soul-stirring rendition of Brown Sugar‘s “Alright”.

Overall, D’angelo proved why he is in another stratosphere than the new generation of experimental urban singers(read: Frank Ocean/The Weekend). D’angelo has reentered himself into the national consciousness and the only thing left is to hear the as-of-yet untitled album before he can dust off the crown he relinquished over a decade ago.

21 year old Texas native Rikki Blu storms straight out of a Nashville with “For Life, a blistering track off his latest mixtape XXXIII. The passionate rhyme slinger will be opening up for TDE’s Ab-Soul along with Brooklyn MC G.R.A.MZ. and Bishop Nehru  at Sob’s on Feb 27th.

The show, scheduled to begin at 10pm did not present its first performer (Zulu Collie) until around 11pm. The bill for the Brooklyn concert was half out of towners (Ceasar Luciano, Zulu Collie and M3) and half New York natives (Tuge, Bryan Dope and Troy Ave). However, the crowd at the tightly packed venue majorly consisted of fans of the out-of-town acts as once those acts left, so did the crowd.

DJ Prince was serviceable for a good portion of the show, however made odd song choices that were not influenced by the crowd’s enjoyment. For example, after a relatively zombie-like reaction to the entirety of Trinidad James’ “All Gold Everything” the crowd grew noticably raucous once Kanye West’s bravado overload possee cut “So Appalled” blared through the muffled speaker system. Even though this got one of the more energized responses, DJ Prince decided to cut the song off after the 1st Kanye verse, sending the party back into its disjointed feel.

The opening acts were a mixture of unrehearsed amateur sets(rapping over vocal backing track), promising crowd-controlling lyricism and Tuge.

This was a calmer Tuge

This show can be easily broken up into two categories. B.T. and A.T. Before Tuge. After Tuge. The husky MC hailing from Rooservelt Island, NYC single handedly provided the most organic reaction of the crowd. After a few camera phone picture flashes, Tuge’s rapid fire flow, vocal changes and infectious passion transformed the somber crowd into a frenzy. The man performed an entire song where he compared himself to Khole Kardashian’s husband, Scott Disick, twice, 40 minutes apart and got the same reaction both times.

“Ruff & Uncut” A.T. consisted of South Providence, RI’s Ceasar Luciano flying through joints off his Confessions of Rubirosa: The Last Playboy, and Queens MC  Bryant Dope bouncing around the stage rapping about Generation Y.

Then there was the “headliner”, Troy Ave. Actually, after Tuge and the subsequent acts there were a few 30-minute waiting periods for Troy Ave on top of the extra hour of lateness. Comedian and host Eric Rosado attempted to keep the crowd interested with numerous requests for single ladies and even asking the audience to “please come closer to the stage for Troy Ave.” Once the Brooklyn MC graced the stage (after 1:30 am), the crowd had already turned into this:

Troy Ave was all smiles and attributed his lateness to getting “a call to make a delivery”. After doing his renditions of his hook on Fabolous’ “Only Life I Know” and Pusha T’s “Road Runner” he powers through “Concrete Jungle” and “Blanco” off his latest mixtape, White Christmas. However, his entire contribution to the event and the event as a whole was encapsulated in one moment. While performing, Troy Ave stopped and claimed he forgot his lyrics due to alcohol. He proceeded to take another sip of alcohol.

Overall, the “Raw & Uncut” was exactly what the name implied. Unfiltered Hip Hop given in the rawest and unpolished(read: unrehearsed) way.

The 2nd Annual Dilla Day Detroit was a tremendous success. With thousands of attendees from around the country, Dilla Day was all about the music. A performance from Clear Soul Forces warmed up the house followed by Frank n Dank, the duo with whom Dilla made some of his greatest music. A mystical jazz performance by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson highlighted preceeded DJ sets from Houseshoes and DJ Spinna, both friends of the legendary producer. Royce Da 5’9″ then took the stage performing “Let’s Grow,” a classic collaboration he created with Dilla for Lyricist Lounge. The headliner of the night was Talib Kweli who performed an amazing set with live instrumentation.

While the music was amazing, the vibe made the night even better. Dozens of Detroit hip-hop artists were in the room and the feeling was like a family reunion. Dilla Day 2013 was about family, the collective hip-hop family that has spawned some of Detroit’s most successful artists. Ms. Maureen Yancey best known as Dilla’s Ma Dukes and Big Proof’s mother, Sherallene “Mama P” Holton, were both recognized for their continued work in Detroit hip-hop after the loss of their sons, who were friends, within two months of each other.

Ms. Yancey cared for her son at the end of his life in 2006 and then later publicly battled for control of his estate and the ability to pay his enormous medical bills. It was clear, by the happy glow on her face that things have finally begun to turn for the better. With the launch of Yancey Media Group and The J. Dilla Foundation, Ms. Yancey is able to support great Detroit hip-hop like that showcased on “The Rebirth of Detroit,” last year and “The Lost Scrolls” this year. She is also able to encourage arts among the youth of Detroit, the day after the Dilla Day show featured a beat-making session with young people at 5e Gallery, an independently owned art gallery in the city.

With the continued support of the hip-hop and philanthropic community, Dilla Day Detroit has the potential to be one of hip-hop’s first official holidays.

BMI’s “How I Wrote That Song” panel is an annual pre-Grammy event that celebrates both Grammy winners and nominees and serves as a platform for panelists to discuss the process of writing, producing and performing hit songs.

This year Grammy-nominated songwriter B.O.B., Grammy-nominated rapper Busta Rhymes and Grammy Award-winner Snoop Lion, as well as chart-topping writer and producer Benny Blanco will be among those discussing their work ethic and recording process to those in attendance.

The annually-held panel, which has included past talent like Nas, T-Pain, Cee-Lo, Keri Hilson, Rev Run, Seal and DJ Khaled, will take place at the famous Roxy Nightclub and be moderated by BMI Vice President Catherine Brewton.

“How I Wrote That Song” will take place from 12:30 to 2:30 pm and is open to the public.

“If I had to describe it, it’s going to feel like VH1: Storytellers. It’s going to feel [like] MTV: Unplugged, where I’m explaining creations, explaining what it meant to me, talk about another record, that’s going to be the vibe,” Skyzoo shared with harlemworldmag.com.

The event will be hosted by Power 105.1′s Angela Yee and will feature a full ensemble of musicians including horn players, a keyboardist, a drummer, and both male and female backup singers. The venue, MIST Harlem’s Theater B, will be a seated only space in order to give the audience the impression of being at a jazz show.

“This concert is going to be different from anything that I’ve done from this far,” says Skyzoo. “I’m a huge jazz head and I think even more so than hip-hop. This is the first time where I get to incorporate the two together and really put a show together from a Miles Davis standpoint or a John Coltrane standpoint or Bobbi Humphrey standpoint.”

To help promote “The Writings of Skyzoo” the Duck Down Records emcee will release a new jazz-inspired song every Tuesday. Last week the freestyle “Phone Calls” hit the Internet. The record featured a track produced by Madlib where he used a Bobbi Humphrey sample mixed with a Hip-Hop beat.

“So Madlib flipped this Bobbi Humphrey record and so that was the jazz connection. The idea was to do a joint over a jazz beat or a direct jazz song for the next four weeks,” explains Skyzoo.

The crowd at MIST Harlem can expect to hear jazzy versions of songs from Skyzoo projects like Cloud 9: The 3 Day High, Corner Store Classic, and his 2012 album A Dream Defered.

I.M.P.A.C.T. is a 4-day event from January 31-February 3 sponsored by Home Mission Inc (HMI) and New Orleans native Lil Wayne’s non-profit organization One Family Foundation. The main goal of I.M.P.A.C.T. (Individuals Making Progress Across Celebrity Thresholds) is to raise funds and awareness about Home Mission’s efforts to provide services for the homeless and underprivileged in New Orleans. The celebrity participates will host events and provide live performances at the Dijon NOLA venue with proceeds going back to HMI. The I.M.P.A.C.T. Weekend will also feature community service projects including the Home Mission’s bi-weekly feed the homeless campaign.

I feel I deserve that.”
