I don't really care about the blocking of the name but they do have a point with the safety issue. Many of the players with the long hair / locks have been tackled viciously by that same long hair. I'm sure it can cause a bad case of sprained neck. But so do face masks penalties for that much. I really don't care if a name is covered though. It's up to the programs, true fans and the stadiums to know the name of the players.

I was going to say the same thing cause getting tackled by your hair is just as bad as a face mask and probably hurts worse. I know Marion Barber can't keep his helmet for 2 plays without it coming off because off those dreads. The name plate isn't that big of a deal but I figured that were gonna do it at some point or another

Anybody remember that play when Larry Johnson from the Chiefs snatched Polamalu up by the hair, or even how Roy Williams be horsecollerin people, he could easliy miss and grab their hair,
it is a saftey issue, I'm not saying they should cut it, just tuck it in or somethin

noooooo! its not. its a PERSONAL issue. the stupid folks suggesting these rules be implemented are NOT the ones with the long hair playing the game. The players with long hair in the NFL are GROWN...and KNOW that they are at risk to get their hair pulled and risk something bad happening, like a hurt neck, etc. so everytime they go out their with long hair, its THEIR choice. If they WANT to take that risk, let em. its that simple

Re: Uh-Oh The NFL Suits at it again (might ban long hair)

Yea its a safety issue but its at ur own risk I mean really look at the NFL n look at the people with long hair atleast 90% are defensive players how often do u really think they are get there hair pulled?? That Polamalu situation is like a 1/100 chance that will ever happen again in his career..Edgerrin James, Laurence Maroneey, Larry Fitzgeralds have all been qouted for sayin that they trim there dreads so they dont get there haired pulled Come on man we are talking about grown ass men dont u think they knew the risk of growing long hair b4 they did shit its not like they grew it over nite.

Me personal I just think that they hate how grimey these niggas look in dreads "Pacman Jones" b4 he cut his, just like how the NBA hated A.I. braids..If a nigga wanna run out the locker room shaking his dreads FUCK IT ITS A FREE COUNTRY!!!!!!!

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/2008/03/27/2008-03-27_chiefs_propose_hairraizing_rule.html

It's a hairy situation for the NFL: Can it control the length of hair on game day?

The Chiefs have proposed a rule that will be discussed - and could be voted on - at next week's league meeting in Palm Beach, Fla., that will prohibit hair to obscure a player's name or number on the back of the jersey. "It doesn't mean players have to cut their hair," said Atlanta's Rich McKay, the co-chairman of the competition committee. "They would have to keep it under their helmet."

It has not been determined that long hair has become a safety issue. But there is some concern around the league that it could be looked at as a racial and cultural issue, which is the last thing the NFL wants. Even so, Chiefs coach Herm Edwards, who is African-American, is behind the proposal. One source said the league would like to get the approval of Gene Upshaw, the NFLPA executive director, who is black.

The eight-man competition committee overwhelmingly endorsed the proposal, but there is a good chance it will be tabled and not even voted on next week.

R.W. McQuarters of the Giants, cut his long hair before last season. Cornerbacks Al Harris of the Packers and Mike McKenzie of the Saints have been known for their extra long hair. In 2006, Kansas City running back Larry Johnson reportedly was penalized 15 yards for grabbing Steelers safety Troy Polamalu by his hair as he was tackling him. Polamalu is one of several players in the NFL who have hair extending past their shoulders.

I don't agree with it, but I understand why the NFL wants to go that route.  It is both a safety and image issue.  Guys have been tackled by their hair and this is a business.  But my question is this, what will they do if the lenght of the hair is part of a religion or culture.  Polamalum is part Samoan and he respects that side of his heritage through his hair.  What does the NFL do then?  Just a question.

I'm a cowboy fan and though the nfl makes idiot rules most times this one is alright i guess i mean Roy Williams hopefully won't pull somebody down by their hair if he can't get the horse collar tackle.

why can't they just penalize people who tackle people by their hair instead of penalizing the people with long hair by making them cut it, fuck the NFL.....but i can't live without it...I bet if Favre would've had long hair they would've made it a requirement that all players have to be at a certain length to imitate him
