A University of
Florida football player who played his high school ball at Sandalwood High
School is accused of identity theft after using the credit card of a fellow UF
student after she was killed last year in a motorcycle accident.
Jamar Hornsby, 21, turned himself in Friday
morning on charges of credit card theft and fraudulent use of a credit card.
His attorney, Huntley Johnson, said they learned that a judge had issued a
warrant for Hornsby's arrest on Thursday.
Hornsby was later released on his own
recognizance.
It's not immediately clear how he got Ashley
Slonina's BP gas card, which court records show was used several times,
starting Oct. 13 -- the day after her death.
According to the Gainesville Sun, the bills
from her credit card continued coming to her family for six months after her
death, which caused continuing emotional distress for the family.
Ashley Slonina died in a motorcycle accident
in October along with another football player, redshirt freshman Michael
Guilford.
Johnson told Channel 4's Jim Piggott there
was a good reason why he had Slonina's credit card, and his client will
cooperate with authorities.
Alachua County Judge William E. Davis ordered
Hornsby not to use anyone else's credit card while the charges are pending
against him. Davis said he did not order any bond for Hornsby so any money paid
to a bondsman could be used for restitution for the family.
