Sunday Selection: Aaliyah Collabs

By Nia B

I remember clearly when I learned of the death of Aaliyah. It was Sunday, the morning of August 26, 2001; about 5AM or so. I’d fallen asleep on the couch with the television on. Upon awakening I looked over at the TV, and to my surprise was a news reporter saying Aaliyah died tragically while a photo of her with the dates 1979-2001 stood at the reporter's side.

"Was I dreaming," I thought to myself? This couldn’t be true…

My heart dropped, I was in disbelief. I felt a deep sadness and couldn’t help but wonder why someone so sweet, so beautiful, and so talented had to die so young.

It made me think back to 1994, when she popped on the scene. From day one something about her caught my eye. Her name, her style of dress, those loc sunglasses she hid behind, everything about her was unique.

If I felt like this, I knew her loved ones and fans were just as devastated. I was going to have to accept the fact that the girl from Detroit I grew up watching with the baggy jeans and boxers blossom into a mature woman was gone. GONE. I would only have the music, the videos, the movies and the photos to remember her by. I would cherish those particular mementos and though I didn’t like it, I’d have to move on.

Over the course of Aaliyah’s career, we only got three albums, but those three are like gold to any Aaliyah fan. She’s influenced up and coming R&B singers that have come after her, and her spirit, beauty, and talent will never be forgotten.

I love collaborations. There’s nothing like hearing more than one different voice on the same song. There’s just something about a good ole’ duet. So let’s take a moment to reflect on my favorite five Aaliyah duets over the span of her career.

I never met anyone who didn’t like Aaliyah, so if you’re reading this I’d love for you share where you were when you found about her death and your favorite five songs from her too. ( :

August 25, 2008 marks the 7-year anniversary of her death. So on that day, take a moment and remember her. R.I.P. Aaliyah, you may be gone, but not forgotten.

Until next week y’all, enjoy this week’s Sunday Selection – “My Fav 5 Aaliyah collabs”

She was the greatest --- never cocky --- she just had the thing that many artists today are still looking for... even when she had that long hiatus and came back with "are you that somebody" and also with "we need a resolution" it was like she hypnotized people and we fell in love with the music... her and timbaland to me were and even better combination than tim and missy...

i will go out on the limb and say she was the biggie of r&b. only had like 3 albums but was already at the top of her game. everyone tried to be like her but couldnt take her crown. just like biggie, she never got the chance to see her fully grow into one of the greatest of all times. shit i used to try and date every female who looked like her back in high school lol.

"Hot Like Fire" and "If Your Girl Only Knew" were my favorite Aaliyah joints.  What I loved was the contrast of a banging hard track with her angel soft vocals.  It made for timeless music, so the limited amount of music that we have from her will last forever.  Aaliyah was the Minnie Riperton of our generation, and you see that the little bit of music that Minnie contributed isn't going anywhere.

Aww. I'm so glad that allhiphop.com has taken the time to remember her. I've noticed that the tributes on BET/MTV have gone by the waistside. I miss Aaliyah so much because she was truly a talented performer. I've felt her void in R&B music since her death. My best friend and I used to watch Four Page Letter for hours trying to learn the choreography that Fatima did.(SMILE) I can't believe its been seven years, but it shows that great talent never dies, because your name is still revelant. RIP Babygirl

Man i  didn't become a fan of hers until her second album, it was just something about her that made me start liking her(  her skin tone and her long  hair, made i am a sucka for red bones) But anyway made i wish  she  could have stayed  around a little bit longer. But i like her last album the most.

I remember where i was when i found out she died, i was in the living room and put on MTV and there was a picture of Aaliyah, and it said, Rest in peace 1979-2001. my first thought was is this some kind of joke? i started clicking throw all the channels and it was all over the news, i was in shock at first then sad, Aaliyah was the first female artist that got my attention, with her music and some of the movies she did. It was just something about her that was real and her kindness you could tell it wasnt an act just when the cameras where on. She is still miss and tha void that she left in R&B has yet to be filled.

Rest In Peace Aaliyah

Man I can't believe it's been seven years. I still remember that night. I thought it was a rumor to. I was out because my birthday is two weeks before and finally caught up with some friends. When i heard i thought no way. Then I got in my car and turned on the radio and they were playing one of her songs and I knew it was true. Very sad day. She seemed like such a beautiful person inside and out. That Jay-Z tribute was "Hot Like Fire" and the DMX joint was hot. The Vibe cover after she passed was one of their best ever.Condolences out to the family.

Some I have come to realize more than others. People really feel as if they knew her. I didn't get how much until yesterday. It is really deep.  Family, friends, and friends..........live on. She would want you to be happy on that day. not sad.

Be blessed.

Yeah I understand but I think their are plenty of artist that still get tributes every time the anniversary of their death comes around. I've just noticed that Aaliyah and a few others have suddenly come to a halt. But I'm not complaining, just make a statement. : )

My favorite Aaliyah collabo is the Hot Like Fire remix. It's smooth like a ballad but upbeat at the same time, and the video was fire. I miss her a lot. I still bump her music. She was unique and complimented Timbaland's and Missy's best work. The last album and "One In A Million" are truly gems, tt would trump a lot of the stuff that's out today, and it's annoying to see her style be swagger jacked  by Cassie and Ciara. There's not much orginiality in R&B more.

I found out about Aaliyah's death initially when my aunt told me she heard that she died, but I didn't believe it until I saw it for myself on the news. I was so shocked and saddened. Her
blossoming career was cut so abruptly. SMH. R.I.P. Aaliyah You may be imitated, but you can't be duplicated. Thanks for the mark you made while you were here.

Hmmm, it's been said that 7 is the number of completion...and it's been 7 long years since she's left us, though I can't find the coorelation in that just yet...I don't care what anyone says, it wasn't their time to go that day...too many shady things took place that day: wrong plane, wrong pilot, wrong day to leave (they were supposed to leave the following day, but Virgin Records, not Aaliyah, suggested they should hurry back since they wrapped early....yet ppl continue to blame this on Aaliyah...) And that's what makes this so hard, 9 families were ripped apart that day...and we can't turn back the hands of time, so we do our part and keep Aaliyah's memory alive...and let's not forget the others that perished with her: Keith Wallace, Gina Smith, Douglas Kratz, Anthony Dodd, Eric Foreman, Chris Maldonado, Scott Gallin and let's not forget the one responsible: Luis Morales III, afterall, he was someone's son. I must admit, when it first happened and I found out that the pilot had cocaine and alcohol in his blood, I was angry..when I found out he falsified his flying expertise, I was fuming...when I found out that the airline company was bogus, it became apparent that this was a tragic turn of events that costed ppl their lives unnecessarily....so 7 years later, we reflect and keep them in our hearts and minds...Rest In Eternal Peace...We Miss You Aaliyah...we didn't know your entourage, but we do know they were important ppl to you and their families...
It's hard to say what Aaliyah would be doing if she were here, but it's a known fact that she'd be on top of her game and she'd definitely be a household name, what she was about to become. "Akasha" was a role that she did with ease and "Trish Oday" was the epitome of "street but sweet".
