Ray J, WTF Were You Thinking?!

Hey everybody! Hope all is well. This week I received an mp3 from my editor. It was from Ray J called “Snake in the Grass.” When I played it, I was stopped dead in my tracks. My initial thought was, “If I see Ray J in the streets, I’m gonna slap the sh*t out him for doing such a horrible song.”

I have been a fan of music, all kinds of music, since I was a child. And I have heard some songs that were full of misogyny, but I never expected to hear something from Ray J that was so disrespectful, appalling, sexist, degrading and flat out foul. Ok Ok, back in '94 when Dr. Dre dropped The Chronic, the track “B*tches Ain’t Shit But Hoes and Tricks” was jaw dropping and even in 2006 R Kelly’s “Real Talk” off his Double Up album was another shocker. But as for “Snake in the Grass,” all I can say is OMFG.

The lyrics of this song are unbelievable. Ray J says things like, “Make sure it’s not your bloody week, you slut,” “Now that a n*gga rich all the b*tches wanna f**k,” “A lot of nasty hoes give it up, but I met this young girl who was chillin’ in the cut she told me to meet her at 3 o’clock to meet her at the Pizza Hut and she was real freaky told me to do it in her butt, so I did it in her butt butt right in the back of the pizza hut hut I’m a freak that’s why I don’t give a f**k. F**k I’ll beat it up until I bust a nut nut cause I don’t give a f**k.” And the hook on the song is “B*tch I don’t give a f**k, N***a I don’t give a f**k. Sh*t I beat up until I bust a nut.” Are you kidding me! Really Ray J…

Why? Why? Why? And the irony behind hearing this song is a pal of mine who’s had the DVD of Ray J and Kim Kardashian for sometime asked me last week if I had seen it. I told her, put the bullsh*t on that I’ve heard so much about for so long. After viewing it for a few minutes, I wasn’t all that impressed. And for the record, I think the fellas bug out over Kim because she’s hot and they’ve seen how she gets down, but for the record I’ve seen and done better.

But anyway, does the rise in stock of Ray J’s celebrity based on his performance in that tape make him think that he can just wild out now? WTF? Does you mom know that you’ve have a song like this Ray J? Does she? Because I think if she knew you did, she’d slap the sh*t out of you. At least I’d hope she would. And Brandy, you need to check your brother. Yeah he’s grown, but a song like this shows his immature side and lack of respect for women.

All I can say is wow. Wow! Ray J you should be ashamed of yourself, but then again women have let men get away with disrespecting us like this in music and overall for way too long. When will this bulls*t end? Ray J how would you feel if one day you had a daughter and a man talked to her the way you conducted yourself in this song? I don’t think you’d like it. You’d demand respect for your daughter. So the next time you decided to write a song like this and then attempt to sing/rap it, don’t!

It’s Sunday and I’m all worked up about this song. “Snake in The Grass” is actually too X-Rated for a day like today, but I couldn’t hold back. I had to let you all know about this mess. How do you feel about it? How do you all look at Ray J now? Let me know. I know I look at him totally different. I’m sure a lot of you will have a lot to say. Don’t hold back!

Until next week! I’ll holla.

I still think Ray-J a beast. I think iof you a fan then you have to be fan of the pros and cons and only God can judge them. Like dude said above there are women that don't give a fuck like Ray so he's not talking to all women just like he said the sluts and freaks. If i had a daughter I wouldnt hide this song from if she heard it. for one, i'm wise enough to know how to explain thangs and i would tell her if you have sex wit alot of guys and not respect yourself when it comes to sex, then this is how men will refer to you. The writer of this blog needs to get over her shock because the world aint finished shocking you. This article ain't shit though just kinda funny when i think about the lyrics. I bet when Khia raps her lyrics, you dont get all shocked when she degrading men. And if you don't get shocked when listening to Khia degrade men writer, then that means you're subconciously sexist

I'm a major brandy fan and for that I respect ray j and his music...But this song is TRASH! and not just because of the lyrics. He has no real beat behind all the garbage he's singing about, his voice is monotone and it just sounds like he's trying to be cool by being disrespectful.  This song is soooo incredibly whack that I had to comment.  Ray J PLEASE!!!!!!! stop it ur getting out of control now. you sound like a clown lol.

And I don't see this getting much playing the club, there's nothing in the song to make the people move.

True, this song is disreprectful to women...I have a young daughter, so I'm very mindful of what she listens to, what she is exposed to, and  her perception of herself. Hopefully my guidance will ensure her future as a strong, educated, respectful, independent black woman.

However....

You gotta admit...it IS a little funny coming from Ray J...I kept saying to myself "THIS nigga  clowning"...I was chuckling my ass off!..."I said GOTDAMN!...This cat REALLY feeling himself right now"....

If it was anybody else I'd say they're bogus as hell, but from RAY J, the same dude that got boo'ed and cried about, it's HILARARIOUS that he's hardcore mackin' and a tough guy now...

Is he still beefing with B2K?

*Sorry for the long ass post, but it needs to be said dammit!*

Boooooo! The engineer is to blame. He should have stopped recording as soon as he started with that mess.

I usually support any artist and their vision, but this is absolutely ridiculous. "Snakes in the grass" is a common reference to enemies or someone hiding, trying to get close to you and do you harm. I understand how some women can be a bit hoodratish and do unsavory things, but damn. If you are going to name a track something like that, atleast tie the concept into the lyrics somehow. I know KK has you a bit tight, if you're going to speak, SPEAK.

OH AND THE "I DON'T GIVE A FUCK" LINE IS WACK. IN CASE YOU DUMBASSES WHO WILL BE SHOUTING THIS OUT "IN DA CLUB" DON'T KNOW, SOMEONE NOT GIVING A FUCK IS WHAT CAUSES MILLIONS OF PEOPLE TO DIE OF AIDS A DAY. SO WHILE YOU JACKASSES ARE TOSSING DOWN SHOTS OF PATRON, BOUNCING TO THIS BULLSHIT, LET YOUR BETTER JUDGEMENT OR COMMON DAMN SENSE KICK IN AND REALIZE YOU SHOULD GIVE A FUCK. ABOUT YOUR SELF, AND YOUR SAFETY IF NOTHING ELSE. GIVE A FUCK AND WRAP IT UP!! That's why certain races look down upon us as over sexed, under educated, low class people. And as long as we support Gay J and his fake gangsta pimp lyrics and the millions of fake ass rappers and homeboys like him, we will continue to be the race at the bottom of the totem pole. Dumbasses! SMDH

And one last bit of advice to Ray J, I saw your lil video. We all know you "don't give a fuck" atleast not a good one. So I wouldn't expect you to be bragging.

I hate to be jumping on the bandwagon, but I have to agree with MOST of the comments above.  I mean....let's see...

Ray J has been a fool with it for a MINUTE now.  For real...

It almost seems like you haven't been listening to Ray J for like 5 or 6 years or something Nia?

And then to get so "upset" over a song?  I don't know why...

It's not like Trina's LOOK BACK AT ME is an epitome of how a woman should be (I like that track by the way:), or Dre's "Bitches Ain't Shit", or Nelly's "Tip Drill", or Khia's "My Neck, My Back".  I mean, come on...

I really don't think jumping on this Ray J track is the way to go.  THere really are women out there like that, and if/when I do have a daughter, I want her to see the differences in how women treat THEMSELVES.  I want her to know that if she is out there lettin' dudes "hit it in the back of the Pizza Hut", then she will probably be treated and looked at as a whore.  And she can't get upset about it, because she would be putting herself out there as a whore.

I've seen women come from the slums, and be upstanding women.  I've also seen women come from the suburbs, and be the biggest ho's.  Mommy and Daddy were there, and raised her, and loved her, and did all they could, and she still CHOSE to be a whore.

In life, it's OUR PERSONAL CHOICES that help decide our plots in life.  Yes, there are "exceptions", but let's just talk about THE NORM.  I don't think Ray J should be jumped on for this song, as much as he should for much he sucked singing it:).  Not the lyrics though.  Nia, you sounded a little feminist in writing this.  For real.

And I'm not getting on you, I'm just disagreeing with you, especially when there has probably been women dancing to this bullsh*t in the clubs.  I, personally, thought the track was funny.  But no different than the nasty sh*t I've heard from Trina, Kim, Khia, and a host of other freaky women...

Anyhow...

I need to get to a movie...

But ya'll need to chill out.  i wouldn't have posted this article AHH...

@ mightydog...No I'm not from NY, so I hadn't heard this song until recently. But I did get the mp3 from my NY folks. If this was and underground joint, it should come as no surprise some folks are hearing this for the first time.

I never undersand the arguments for misogyny in songs like this. People say well theres been worse songs and people have been making misogynistic songs for years. Okay.... Does that make this particular song any better?? You cant talk about anything else like that. You cant rob a bank and expect not to get in trouble because people have robbed banks in the past and stole more money. IF its a misogynistic song its a misogynistic song, Old songs dont make this one any better OR any more acceptable!

There is a problem with songs full of lyrics that degrade women like this. At one part of the song he said every girl at his concert is a hoe, Everyone of them. So thru this song Ray is tryin to say EVERY WOMAN is a slut, hoe, bitch etc...

I have a huge problem with songs like this. We degrade our women but yet we ask other people to treat us with respect. Women are the cornerstone of the Black community so if we destroy and degrade Black women we destroy and Degrade ourselves and our entire community. Its our responsibility as listners not to purchase/support songs like this and to support songs that empower women. Young folks and some older folks need to learn to respect our women or were going to continue to suffer as a community. If we dont step our game up as a community and stand up against this hatred of women we all are going to suffer, shit we already do suffer because of it. Look at how many single mothers there are in our community becuase as men we have NO respect for women and think we dont need to stay with our childs mother. Its through lack of respect for women that we do not value relationships, Its through Lack of respect and the sexual degredation of women that we no longer show strong family values and think of women merely as Sex objects.

So I do think this song and songs like this only make a growing problem in our community worse. This song is disgusting and everyone co-signing this song needs to really understand the impact misogyny has on the Black community.

You can't be serious Nia B. I don't like the song & Ray J's not really talented to me, but he didn't say anything that has never been said before in a song. This is like a feminist watching a porno and then being shocked & offended at what she saw even though she knew it was coming (no pun intended). You're so offended by the song that you decide to write an article about & post the song online to expose it to millions of people that probably would have never heard it? Makes sense...

Look at how many single mothers there are in our community becuase as men we have NO respect for women and think we dont need to stay with our childs mother.

I agree that Black men need to step and do what they need to do for their children, I can't argue about that, but why don't women take the initiative to prevent unwanted pregnancies with dudes that aren't about sh*t? It's not impossible to prevent pregnancy. We all know women who have a new baby everytime they get a new boyfriend. Why aren't women looking out for their own best interests?

All of that is true, but you're helping Ray J more than you're hurting him. Still, this was about as bad as him singing "I'mma take this broomstick and shove it in his asshole!"  Speaking of which, Ray J seems to be quite fascinated with sticking things in asses.

At the moment maybe children were created because the man wanted to go raw and the woman thought there was more in their relationship than there actually was. It's important to view all disparging remarks, by artist against women, as disrespectful and unacceptable. You think that Back men would honor and respect our women more.. I know ML King and Malcolm X would be turning in their graves if they heard some of the filth being spit by Black rappers towards our women.

I understand that Ray J's lyrics are utterly disrespectful; nonetheless, there are a ton of artist (such as Piles) who has made a career on disrespecting women and no one calls him or other artist on it.

This is preceisly why female rappers have a difficult time because females don't even have a level of sistahood among themselves.

So when someone comes out wiht hurtful lyrics like this, people aren't surprised.

My question is...what took so long?

And where are the other female artist and thir outrage?

I'm waiting to see what happens.....

This song is definitely disgusting and disrespectful in my opinion. It's crazy to see excuses saying there's other songs like this, well no shit Sherlock.  Controversial songs have always existed, but that doesn't make this particular song any less tasteless than it already it is. However, I'm not all that suprised that  Ray J would make a song like this. He's been doing a lot crazy things for years out of shock value and attention. It is what it is with Ray J as far as I'm concerned. I disagree with Nia B saying that Brandy should say something to him. What can she do? He's a grown man. I'm sure her and even their parents probably tried to talk some sense into him before, but obviously it hasn't work yet. They can only do so much, and it's up to him in the end to decide what he wants to do. I pesonally think Ray J now knows no one really takes him seriously as a singer, actor, or whatever else he tries to be, so he has developed this I don't give a damn attitude.

@ Killuminati 187 - Jazmine Sullivan's "Bust Your Windows" was not Sunday Selection, Ray J's "Snake in The Grass" is. Jazmine's song is a whole different can of worms. Saying...“Make sure it’s not your bloody week, you slut,” is nothing compared to busting out windows.

Windows can be replaced, being disrespectful like that...there is a difference and you know that just as well as I do.

If you look at the history of Hip-Hop...Men have been talking greasy in their music way before women even thought about it.

We can take it back to 87' when I listened to Too Short for the first time in my walkman. At that moment I realized that people could say some crazy things in their music. And I was a little girl then.

Here I am almost 20 years later still hearing the same misogny. When will the madness end??!!!

There is no level of sin, bustin' out windows is just as bad as sayin' "make sure it's not your bloody week you slut", so Ray-J is doing nothing worse than what that Jazmine bitch is doin', and yes, I call Jazmine Sullivan a BITCH 'cause only Bitches bust windows out a car like a coward, if a bitch bust my windows out I will hunt her down and take a brick to her face, I don't play vandalism.  There's nothing you can tell me that will make "busting out windows" okay, you got a problem then handle it like a fuckin' adult, not a little hood rat.

You just feel offended by the Ray-J song obviously, but why get offended if you're not the SLUT he's talkin' about?  Are you the girl he fucked in the butt behind Pizza Hut?  Didn't think so.  There's more BITCHES in this world than there are LADIES, and I understand you aren't in the "bitch" category Nia, so back up and let him lash out at all the women who deserve to be called bitches, he's not talkin' about you so what's your issue?  Yet you say you would SLAP Ray-J for makin' this?  Only a BITCH would try to slap me over a damn song I made that wasn't even talkin' about her ass...THAT'S more ignorant than the SONG is.

CONCLUSION: There will always be bitches, and there will always be good women.  If you're a good woman then this song shouldn't bother you, you should be laughin' at the way he's talkin' about these snake bitches.  If you're a snake bitch, you'll find this Ray-J song offensive.  Point blank, if you're not a bitch/hoe/cunt/slut, then you're NOT who he's talkin' about, so stop cryin'.

Are you out of your fuckin' mind?

Lack of respect for WOMEN??  What you're failing to understand is he's not disrespecting WOMEN, he's disrespecting BITCHES that can't keep their legs closed.  A good WOMAN knows better than to do hoe shit.  Bitches need to be talked to like that so they'll clean their fuckin' act up.  We all know what the difference between a Lady and a Bitch is, and you're making it seem like he's just lashing out at innocent women with this song, that's complete bullshit.

And for your little smart ass comment you spoke out the side of your mouth...I don't need you to tell me what the Sunday Selection is after I just read your entire article lashing out at Ray-J because he made ONE song disrespecting bitches and hoes.  Fuck it, if you wanna take offense to this song and throw yourself in the "Hoe" category and say "OH NO HE DIDN'T!!!!" then go ahead.  You coulda been a lady about it and just said "there's too much cussin'.." and pressed the Stop button instead of wiggin' out like the sky is fallin' on your face.

@ Killuminati 187 - I know Ray J is not talking about me, but at the same time if Ray J will say this about a woman, what makes me exempt from being called that even if I'm not a slut or bitch? I hear men refer to women that aren't "bitches and hoes" as "bitches and hoes" all the time. This is a never ending conversation...

Look how you are refering to Jazmine Sullivan based on a song she wrote. You don't know her, but yet your calling her a bitch. At what point in your life did you start calling women out their names? Who influenced you to do it? Was it the male influences around you, movies, or Hip-Hop music?

Its all love though Killuminati 187. Thanks for providing your thoughts.

You know it's all love, u AHH fam just like everybody else.

But since you asked, I've never called women collectively out of their name (meaning I've not once said every woman is a bitch/hoe), just select women who I feel deserve it.  To be honest with you, I don't remember the exact first time I called a woman a bitch, but I bet everything I own that she wasn't a nice lady I was just being mean to for no reason.

Example: My ex cheated on me, she's a bitch for that.

Cheating don't fly with me, period point blank.  We can co-exist in the same place (say at a party or somethin) but she knows the deal, she a dirty untrustworthy bitch that like to sleep around when she in a relationship, that makes her a Bitch to me.  So if I make a song talkin' bout dirty bitches, it's about women like her, not like you...that's why if I were Ray-J I wouldn't expect you to trip like you did.

It's all good tho, gorgeous smile in ya avi btw, Stay up.

I am surprised that Nia B would waste this much space on a Ray J article. You can't deny that what he is talking about is very true in regards to a lot of women in this society. With the amount of groupies and gold diggers willing to do anything for fame the song has a lot of merit. Nobody forces these women to perform the sexual acts behind closed doors or on these sex tapes. Generally speaking, integrity is lacking in our culture. In fact, IMO, it is up to the individual to earn respect.

These females that waiting in lines looped around the corner to be on the Flava of Love 4, or in the next rap video are VOLUNTEERING to participate in these roles.

Who are you or me to judge another person putting food on their own plate?

Nia B is beautiful! And Ray-J is pretty lame, as far as trying to come with all this tough, fuck a bitch type, blah-zay.. There are guys that actually live that way (I'm not praising that) And people who don't really understand why some dudes may say fuck a bitch (Compared to some people who many not understand when some women say niggas ain't shit (N.A.S. lmao) But it goes both ways.. I can vibe it, but it could've been done with some more class, maybe something that could've gotten some actual exposure. Savy put it best (henny, strip club, studio LMAO) but it's obvious that he was REALLY vibing himself from shagging Kim K. Women (not all) like niggas with stuipd dough. Even lil wayne funny looking ass got groupies by the bundle. Women are that way, and men should only remind them of how so, in a dignified manner! (Unless you two are alone, this eliminates all slander charges, and tell that bitch how it is!) Good read Nia B, with your gorgeous self.

1st thing I got from this article is Nia B sayin she's "seen and done better" and you from my city, we should really holla.
My problem is with the word mysoginist, which means a person with a hatred for women. Im not saying this song and songs like this aren't disrespectful to women, but I highly doubt these guys hate women. Really rap was supposed to be a man's point of view on things without being R&Bish talkin sappy. These songs represent a disgust for women who use us for material gain, not a hatred of women. More than a few of the women I have had sexual relations with, wanted to be fucked hard from behind their hair pulled and their ass slapped, not soft and sentimental the way most R&B songs lead you to believe women want it. Nia baby you may not like these kinds of lyrics, but what happens with you when the lights are off, lets be real we are adults here. The negative ways women are treated and portrayed go deeper than a song. At the same time if a man doesn't know how to treat a woman with respect,(not including what I've said in an attempt to express my desire for the writer of this article), even if she is a hoe or a bitch, then he himself is a bitch.

@ Shutup Im talkn - you are the first person to notice that I said..."I've seen and done better!" (blushing). Yeah I said it and I meant it. And as adults - yes, we all get down! But as an adult we should also speak about things with tact and respect as much as possible. Be the bigger person sometimes. Don't always take the "fuck a bitch route" because its the road to no where.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

@ Nia B, I understand the shock value, i even agree with some of what you said. I'm just confused as to why you didnt' realize that Ray J has always been like this??? secondly, he's not the 1st nor the last to do a song like this. In no way does this make it right, but again, where do these guys get the material to come out like this??? Yep from the LADIES. and no i'm not blaming all women, just the sluts, lmao.

@Kgm1985, you hit right on the nail.
@Haughville i agree with all you said.

It's simple, women need to be smarter in who they chose to be freaky with. Secondly, again, women need to be smarter in raising their little girls to have better morals. these songs will continue as long as we have women out there who is doing these things.

and for the record, that tape was garbarge so Tpain and everyone else commenting on that wack bootleg video of Kim and Ray, please. It was awful. Like Nia said, i can do better and seen better. lmao, just teasing there.
