roger troutman is somewhere turning in his grave because of the way people are misusing the vocoder. it was cool at first cuz i haven't heard it in a while, but now it's played out, just like the screwed voice (i'm mad at twista for having the screwed voice on damn near every hook on Adrenaline Rush 2007). to be honest, i'm tired of hearing it. but snoop's rendition of it is cold as fuck tho.

This article is confusing two different things a talkbox and a vocoder.

A talkbox is a mini amplifier with a tube. An instrument such as a guitar or keyboard is plugged into the box and travels up a tube. The tube goes in the back of your mouth. As you play the instrument and mouth the words the instrument, amplifier and tube acts as your vocal cords and speaks the word. However, you only mouth the words, you do not actually sing. The picture you have above is a talkbox. Roger made the talkbox famous, so did Peter Frampton.

A vocoder is a rack mounted, (or now software drive) vocal pitch corrector. Its basically used by singers who cannot hit a certain not. The vocoder corrects the pitch based on the settings you give. This was made famous by Cher in "I Believe in Love".

I say this because I keep hearing comparisons of R&B acts today compared to Roger. Roger used a talkbox not a vocoder, and its not similar. A talkbox is extremely hard to use and requires alot of skill as a musician. A vocoder is used by singers to cannot hit a certain note.

to clarify my statement above, the talkbox is really hard to use cause you have to be able to play an instrument while your mouthing the words (not singing). It takes an incredible amount of practice to be able to learn how to mouth the words and make them come out exactly as if you were talking.

The effect used nowadays with T-Pain and Snoop's new track is not a vocoder or talkbox. It's Auto-Tune.
Roger and Peter Frampton used Talkboxes. THey are useless unless you play an instrument. A vocoder is basically what Kraftwerk used in "Trans-Europe Express" (the classic track that was used as the basis for "Planet Rock"). The vocoder is almost the same as a talkbox, only it is a keyboard. You can also have software-based vocoders like Orange Vocoder.
Auto-tune is something else entirely. I use it on some tracks, I've been using it since about 2001. Its purpose is in its name. It auto-tunes notes on vocals. When the settings are turned up all the way, you get the T-Pain effect. His vocals jump around even with he auto-tune on because he's not the best singer in the world. Snoop says they used a vocoder and autotune for "Sexual Eruption", but it's just Auto-tune. You can control the notes via MIDI rather than use the settings, but it still isn't a vocoder.

Good point you're trying to make... But yo... Straight up... The way you did it is just plain wack... You should learn about something before you try to express your opinion. Mr. Fuzion perfectly explained the difference between Talkbox, Vocoder and Auto-Tune. What you're trying to diss is Auto-Tune, not Vocoder. Change the name of your article dude, you're just confusing everybody. Vocoder is DOPE, talkbox is DOPE, Auto-Tune is WACK (except if it's used with great care and taste like Snoop).

You talk about Peter Frampton and his "talking guitar" (not even knowing he uses a talkbox), and you don't even mention Roger in the whole article!! As a critic you should know about this... but look it up on google if that's the way you roll. Here's what you do: you go to a certain website called "google", here's the address "www.google.com", and type in "Roger Troutman Zapp Talkbox"... Wow! ain't that great buddy! You can learn lost of fun stuff for your writing on there! Use it...

I think artists are just as confused.
I saw an interview wherenot only the interviewer referred to it as a "talkbox", and Snoop said he used "Auto-Tunes with a talkbox on top of it" (as he called it) when it was obviously just the Auto-Tune. To top it off, he acts like he's using a vocoder the video and his live performances either have him faking his using a vocoder (As on Ellen below) or a talkbox as on Jay Leno/David Letterman (removed from youtube) (check youtube if the video below doesn't work).

Those of us who actually play keys can see that he obviously can't play (he's not even using the key), let a lone the vocoder or talkbox.. which is not bad (it's a show for God's sake), but there was a due singing ON TOP of his vocal on the live version. He's not a singer, never claimed he was one and it looks like someone told him to act like he's using the vocoder.. which is fine. Those outside the industry have no clue and just like the song.
That's what's wrong with music today. You have cats who listen to ringtone rap and think that it's real hip-hop, or who can draw a few beats onto Fruity Loops (which I don't hate on, but it honestly only works if you have talent) and think they're a producer.

Hating on a hustle is one thing. T-Pain is making his paper and, quiet as its kept, actually plays instruments (no telling how well though) and can right hit songs in his sleep, no matter how minimalistic they sound. Snoop on the other hand is a fucking legend. No disrespect to either, but, it's just that neither one can hold a note in a bucket. Again: not a dis, just a fact. I have a lot of respect for both.

There's a different issue here. You need to KNOW your craft, or else those who DO know what you don't will put you on blast.

I respect everyone's hustle, but damn. Know what you're talking about instead of confusing a lot of cats here who think T-Pain, and Snoop used a talkbox, vocoder, voicebox, etc... it's auto-tune.

If you wanna know how a talkbox really is used and should be used, either type in Roger Troutman or "Stevie Wonder talkbox" on youtube. STEVIE was the one who influenced Roger into using it. Real talk.

To all producers, learn 2 things: at least learn 1 instrument and know the business end and at least some basic music terms.
Or else you'll be trying to explain that you use a vocoder or talkbox, but can't play an instrument. You'll either confuse people or be made a fool of.

Case in point: the whole "I Get Money" fiasco.

Whats funny is most of you here are clueless. What these guys are using is NOT a Talk Box. It's a vocal ensemble (something like a Roland VP-550) which is very different. Listen to an old Zap song and see if it even resembles these TP, Snoop, Ja Rule songs. It is not a Talk Box nor a Vocoder. I hear these VP-550's everywhere now. There are a few artist who actually do use a Talk Box (DJ Quik, E-40 and maybe a few other artist), but these take much more skill then a VP-550.

And to this user -"Breakdownbeats"...... You're confusing a Vocoder with one of these Voice Ensembles (VP-550). They are two different things. Roland had a Vocoder back in the 70's which was called a VP-330 (a true Vocoder), but the newer line of Roland's voice processors are still labeled VP and are not Vocoders.
