A way of life but it dosen't tell you how to raise a child or treat a wife. " Rappers and these execs need to have their feet held to the fire just like these so-called leaders. But who's feet that really needs to be held down are the ones in the community responsible for tearin shit up and their parents. I appreciate the editorial Banner just broaden the attack next time and talk about these rappers that really aint doin shit for hip hop or the community. Talk about these ring tone money hungry execs who are tearing up the hip hop culture tryin to make a buck not caring about the content coming out of a rappers mouth and that like black kid in Greenville, SC. it effects. He, however, doesn't always reflect it and he should be smart enough to pull some of his comrades to the side and say, "this is not the way to go". Don't request Al, Oprah and them to do something you NEVER do!

Yes, they could do more, but ask yourself, "Is our community prepared to take full advantage of ANY help. Dave Chappelle's skit about reparations was more than just funny, it was a real statement about where our mentality lies.

Al, Jesse, Bill, and Oprah could just skate off with their earnings and live it up-- like the rappers who claim to be so rich are diong. Hell, at least they care enough to hold the mirror up to our crazy brothers and sisters.

How does music that speaks on the harsh realities of life help matters?

If you cats switch up the content a little, I BET over time SOME (not all) things here in the hood will change. This music I grew up and love - is influencing a lot of kids here in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

I think Banner's right on point saying that there's a growning divide in the Black community, particularly between the hip-hop generation and the older, former leaders/their community. Hip-hop has always been a youth movement and I can understand the older generation not "getting it." However, I think Banner makes a good point saying that there needs to be better dialogue. The biggest problem the Black community has faced is its lack of unity. The current "leaders" are dividing the people, and that's never going to help the community grow. They need to find ways to unite people instead.

It used to be an embrassment to do a bid, b/c that means you got caught. It was nothing to be proud of. Selling drugs doesn’t make you hard; drug dealers get robbed all the time. And only followers joined gangs b/c they were shook about fighting or being a vic. (Decepts, etc.)

**Side Note: I’m not disagreeing with the statements that you’ve made, but simultaneously the relevance only goes so far.

Everyone can not move out of the hood. It’s not even or was it ever about the hood. It’s about the people in the hood. The “hoods” in most major cities have all been or will soon be gone. It’s happening all over the country; gentrification. Look at the changes in Bed-Stuy, Harlem, Newark, DC, Atlanta (SWATS, College Park, etc), and I’m sure many other places. And where will people move to? Where can people afford to live? These are questions that need to be answered or at least discussed for possible solutions.

Al Sharpton & David Banner both have valid points, but they are both guilty of division. “Divide & Conquer.” Instead of focusing on the differences, “we” should focus on “our” common ground; black empowerment. Events such as Jena 6 have gone on for years (Rodney King, Sean Bell, Emmett Till, Timothy Stansbury…and the list goes on). I applaud the people who took time to “think” and post their own thoughts. The next step is to become an active participant in “your” community and work together. Volunteer at your local community center, become a big brother/big sister. Changing one person’s life is a step to changing the entire village.

I completely agree with your persepective. Both parties "Our leaders" and "artist" are responsible for bringing about social change. Some artist are just not at the point in understanding / maturity where they realize the power of the tongue. What ever you say has the power to manifest itself in reality and someone else. The leadership starts at home, why wait for somebody to come and save you. We are our own leaders, if I see something wrong I am going to address it. If I see something right I am going to applaud it. I see it with my own eyes, the way that we are trying to out do each other or partying every weekend. Most rappers are not role models or even close to being leaders, but the majority of black youth look up to them because that is all that they see. They see a dream or a fantasy that they long to live. Drug dealing and pimping is more accepted in our community than getting an education and I feel that is backwards. I was raised without a father, my mom was on crack, we lost our house and moved in a shelter. My family was split up, and I moved in with foster parents. All of the bad influences were around me, but I used all of those negative experiences as motivation to lead me where I am today. I could have been a statistic but I would not allow myself to be one, ultimately what I am trying to say is that it is all about personal choices.

These are probably the best post I've ever seen on this subject. I'm happy to see all this dialouge it's a good thing. I think the problem is we can't get our hands around the fact you are all right actually no one is wrong. The issue of African Americans in this great country of ours is a layered one. The offense against us happened 100s of years ago and has been ignored, even by our own people.

If it's all about accountability and integrity, how can you blame the youth with out sharing in the blame, especially a genre of music. Are you kidding me?? I was a teen in the 80s, push'n them packs and the hottest album out was De La Soul's 3ft high and rising. How I see it, the street wanted the street music. Back at that time NWA was banging in every hood with no airplay or massive media exposure these artist get today yet they still sold a million copies which was a phenominal feat. They sold that many records because they capture the anger and fustration we face and white kids are fascinated how our music pisses off their parents..cause they hate their parents just like we hate their racist parents hate'n us, just as much as we hate ourselves.

What I'm sayin is the hood is gonna be fucked up wether there was rap music or not. To blame rap music you have to shut down every other form of entertainment as well. Right?? To change the condition of African Americans is an enormous task that can not be pulled off by Al and those old judgemental grannies nor can it be done by music. That is something which can only happen thru a revolution in our minds. I myself don't know how that would happen.

Let me first say that I am a David Banner fan. I also agree with alot of stuff that he said. I realize that he has and continues to do much for our community. I realize that some of this music is do to people's surroundings and circumstances, but not all of what we here and see is do to that. Hip-Hop is the most influential music in the world, it influences over seas, the suburbs, even in the country towns of the US. We see little white kids dressing in baggy shorts, sagging their pants, trying to rap, joining gangs, talking about pimps and using language that we all know doesn't come from their household. If we have that much influence on kids that don't look like us, have both parents in the house and doesn't have the problems that we have in the black community then we must realize the influence that we have on the youth in our community. It is not hard to see the day to day influence. Remember that for kids in the hood supervision is sometimes if not most of the time minimal. So it is easy to say raise your own kids to the parent that is there, but what do you say to the mom that is working two to three jobs to make ends meet with no family help. Also to the kid that is raising his brothers or sisters that does not have it figured it out yet. I can't let my kids listen to the radio without explaining nine to ten different things that my kid shouldn't be worried about. I have to tell my kids you can sing that song but you can't say this word.
I agree that some of our leaders are not going about their goal the right way. You have to realize that Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were going through the struggles that they were fighting against. The leaders of today went through those struggles long ago. So don't get mad if they take the wrong path, you should join them in their mission and show them the way a person that deals with this stuff would do it.
In closing I would like to say that I am from the "hood" and I still struggle everyday outside of that hood. On a very personal note I find it to be a poor excuse to say that "I degrade women and my brother because of where I am from or that we do this because of the Ol' White society". When I hear a educated person say that, what I really hear is that I am to weak minded to break from the role that society has made for me. And for a person that is not educated, I feel it is our duty as the educated to let them know that it is not right. We have enough black men and women making money in this country to educate our own if we would do it. The definition of insanity is to "continue doing the same thing and expecting a different result". So I challenge the rappers businessmen and educators in our community to step up to the plate and start our own schools and create our own communities so that we can get all the benefits that we complain about not having.
Last thing is that I DID see Al Sharpton at a press conference when the kids in New Jersey got killed.

And these lyrics are very public so they should be addressed in public. I wanna know why you feel you being left out to dry. You have rights they didn't have coming up. I can't knock Oprah too much because she has done a lot of great things, but she still needs to open her eyes. Hip-hop is not the villain. The drugs, violence, and crime in the hood is the villain. Honestly, not all rappers are clear from the finger pointing because some of them do not just talk about these things but they glorify them.

I like Ron Art's comments on the things that he doesn't like. I agree 100 with that. Its hard being an intelligent black man in this society, largely due to the fact that it goes against the foundation of this society. Understand that these systems were built to keep us ignorant, and forever in service to the powers that be. An intelligent black man is a directly threat to the status quo. Slavery ended because the whites in power were looking like huge hypocrits to the world trying to preach human rights across the globe and spread democracy (people matter philosophy) but at the same time enslaving, manipulationg, and deminishing a whole race of people. Basically the epitome of hypocracy. But understand the mentality tho. Imagine one day, your dog stood up on his hind legs and started preaching to you about improving his conditions, and bettering the way you treated him. But at the same time he didnt do nothing to show you an example of how he should be treated, he just b*@#hed and moaned but still wauted for you to change the conditions. You would first of all be shocked to see him on his hind legs (that would take you sometime to handle by itself), and after you get over that you would immediately create a plan to take your dog back into being a dog. And its even better if he's a dog and doesnt even know he still is a dog. He know thinks he has a few rights. I mean after all, life is great while your dog is being a dog, who would want to give that up. I mean after all he is mans best friend. People thats the mentality that your trying to go against. We are decendants of slaves (hence the white mans dogs), we are the fruit of Willie Lynches labor. We are now in that mode of waiting for the children of former slave masters and there mans best friends (the new black leaders) to change things for us. Nobody will ever give you anything. I like this piece by David Banner. I too agree on how the older generation is, and from what I know, they do too much negative talking amongst themselves about the hip hop/urban/black community. Instead of talking about how bad it is maybe they should consider encouraging the younger generation to be a more positive group. Me personally, i used to have my 'rebel' days and sometimes i could over hear negative comments coming from my own fam, just like the so called leaders are talking about our youth and the hip hop community. It brings me to write you on a matter that is getting way out of control and that is black unity. In 1712 Willie Lynch made a speech to a Virginia Colony on ways to put slaves (Black People) against one another and his method proves very effective till this day, being that Willie Lynch guaranteed everyone in the Colony, "that if his method of controlling slaves, (Black People) is installed correctly it will control the slaves for at least 300 years". Ask yourself this question, "Is that not whats going on right now"? Of course it is, you have the old black male against the young black male, the young black male versus the old black male, light skinned blacks versus dark skinned blacks and vice versa, the rich black male versus the poor black male, the light skinned female versus the dark skinned female and the list can go on and on. When will we as a people learn that what our ansectors died for we have put to shame. I mean I saw the show that you did that involved the comments that Don Imus made and it truly angered me to see how your panel, group of all blacks, blamed and went after each other faulting one another for a comment a white man done made. Comments like these were made way before my time and still are made to this very day. Being born in the early 70's I can say we never blamed artist like Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, James Brown etc etc.. for the lynchings, burnings, rapings and other horrific things that we as black people have gone through or still go through today. What i'm saying is, "Enough is enough", and we must understand that our complete existence will soon be just a memory if we do not react now.

Lets take a good look at our young. I'm 34 years old and I ask my 14 year old daughter about how she felt about slavery and she said, "If it was not for you and Mommy telling me about it I never would have none it even existed". Do we not see the concern in what my daughter stated? What child born in the late 80's, 90's, 2k and beyond is going to know about what struggles our people have went and gone through and will still go through if we do not educate them, for Black History is being elimenated throughout the school system and am I the only one that see this? In today's world have we as black people got to comfortable in life? Do our young know that the reason they are able to drink from the same water fountains as whites, able to go into restrauants with whites, being able to use the same bathrooms as whites, is that many of ansectors fought and died for us to have a better way of living? Kids now a days worship gangs, violence, material things instead of realizing the dream in what Martin Luther King spoke of. I mean was freedom at the cost of killing and degrading our own kind? If we continue to ignore the problem then expect things with our youth to spiral way out of control with no point of return.

What I am asking is for some type of documentory showing how things were back in the days of slavery and beyond and what currently has taken place and what lies ahead to eduacate our younger generation. One thing I do not want is for my children, my grandchildren, so on and so on, to have to relive what my parents and grandparents went through and how hard it was on them. Its time that we show our black youth who paved the way for them and what they had to go through in order for them to enjoy what life has to offer now, for it was not offered in the old days. Truly showing our youth that if you put a red, blue, black cloth over their head and are claiming a gang affiliation, is no different than a white person, who puts a white cloth over their head and call themselves a klansman, for the intent is to kill off the black race and our young and some old are to blind and uneduacted to see this. I pray that one day we all could live in harmony and live peacefully amongst one another, but will that ever happen? Rev. King and others who paved the way must be turning in their grave to see what the price of freedom has cost us. Lets take a stand, and instead of just talking about it be about it and learn that in order for us to rest in peace comfortably we can be assured that our young and old come together before all is lost.

I think the whole point of the article and what alot of people seem to be missing is............we all need to solve these problems. David Banner, Al Sharpton, Opray, etc....we all need to fix what's going on with our community. Just to pinpoint hip-hop music and say this is what's wrong with us and it's needs to be cleaned up is pointless. Go back in hip-hop music and listen to "The Message". Listen to the conditions he's speaking on. How much of that has really changed??? Life dictates art. Without these ills of society do you think rappers would be talking about things such as this?? Probably not.

You can take hip-hop music away, ban it, clean it up, etc.....Do you really think the conditions of our communities will change?? There's still going to be drugs, violence, suffering, etc....

Even David Banner said it himself we're all making mistakes, put don't just criticize the person making the mistake if you claim to know a better way, just teach that person the better way. If a rapper is out here making the music he loves, feeding his family, and giving back to his community.....this an art form where he's pouring his heart out and speaking on his troubles. Man, Im from Mississippi and I can say that David Banner is highly respected here, and not just because of where he's from...I can honestly say that he does give back and when he's alone with no help from the gov't, the fellow wealthy Mississippians(OPRAH IS FROM MISSISSIPPI)..but that not being the point..He is only making a counter-statement to what "they" have begun to criticize and not offer any input on trying to make "us" better..whether it be..hip-hop or poor communities, black on black violence(epidemic), public education, etc.

Maybe he could have taken a different approach to address the situation and maybe "they" could have also, but "we" as a people cannot continue to point the finger of blame at each other...but I do agree with most of the things that he has to say, even though it's not about being street or from the hood because that neither MUSIC makes us who we are and makes the decision on whether we will drop out of school, bang, rob, sell drugs, or whatever you do to get by... because even though college isn't for everyone, a high school diploma doesn't hurt at all in the world we live in today..

But i think he will apologize for the way that he said alot of things in this publication...but not everything...but OUR BLACK "LEADERS" NEED TO PLAY THEIR ROLE AND NOT JUST CLAIM THE NAME.

I am a little hurt that he used the same choice of words that they seem to be arguing about being said and still cannot seem to quite link the chain for society vs. statements made in the lyrics that are affecting the community which only leaves me to believe that they plain and simply don't want to and for me, being in the community that they don't seem to care about, say that they need to be dropped as advocates in the black community and should to the white community because my community doesn't need anyone who thinks that we are expendable and can be taken as test subjects and wait until we all die off and then allow them to live with there fantsey's of white familys with no black sounds and they live as slaves. No thank you, we can not do. I must say that that Oprah is letting me down, she has been around for a while and in her effort to help the community, she still has her little pitty party with her white community because they block her from hearing the truth. Understood that you need a support system but when you can't even look yourself in the face and neither can your audience, they are just paid, then you have to admitt that can cause hurt and pain and allow you to let that affect the community in ways that you could never imagine such as now. Working with the Naacp and not doing anything and still living a fantsey over in Africa as if to say that one school is really going to change the bigger controversy, saying that you would rather support someone who goes to Africa and kills the people by putting Aids in their blood stream to exterminate and then to say, these are the same people that I will allow to support me and as long as I can safe a portion of the African's then I am subtle, that is deep and not acceptable. I didn't get a chance to view any panel discussions but to have Common on the panel, that is like having cake at a cookie party, just doesn't add up, both sweet, not the same category. I agree 100% and say that if we can clear them out of their positions, then I believe that derogatory language can be eliminated from being filtered in the minds of children and adults against their will without warning and can contain a lot of the music that is put out which releases the wrong message and pisses people like David Banner off who don't want to entertain the animal that want's him to let off all the fowl language that he just did and lay that beast down to rest and continue with life!

Much respect to David Banner, College educated rappers are dope! I agree that all of the most articulate gangsta rappers such as say... 50, or Too Short, or Jim Jones were left out of the discussion. It is based on the fear of being made to look ignorant by the same people who you strive to call the same thing. After reading this and all the comments people have made, I must ask first and foremost myself, what I am doing to better the society I live in ? We can all talk about it till death but it does not change the world we live in. Ron, I agree with you 100% it bothers me too, what bothers you bothers me but at the same time we all need to get involved. Why are we waiting for people to lead us? We are not ones to be led we can lead ourselves. It starts with the individual then the family then the community. Lets start with ourselves. There are so many ways to get involved so instead of talking about it do it! Join the Boys and Girls Club join anything that makes a difference but make a difference. Its easy to talk about it but to give up our free time to make someone's life easier is hard. SO DO IT! Get up and offer a hand to someone in need, it does not always have to be money. Advice youth to go to school show them life other than the one they see and are used to.
