bogus. the real emcees today are light years aehad of where their forefathers were. it's not theri fault that as fans you're too lazy to look for them. they were easy to find when there were only 8 rappers. now ther'es 800 you ogtta look more. but dontn tell em jay-z or common or kweli or lupe wouldnt torch a bunch of those old niggas on the mic. You can't really blame hiphop now for what's going on. It's a trade that has happened in the music. For the artists to make that big money, they had to provide a product that was marketable to the society as a whole. We created this but remember that we are only a percentage of the population in this country. The real money was in getting to those who wanted pop rap. Single driven albums that can get play on MTV and sell ringtones. The people who provide the money for these labels see what sells and directly sign and promote acts that they think will give them a return on their money. It has nothing to do with artistry, creativity or realness. It's about the bottom line to the labels and distributors. Buy low and sell high. People always talking about those people that sell not having talent or being real rap, but realness doesn't sell.

On another note, those so called fake rappers have opened up doors to do other things besides rap. They have opened up avenues to do other things like acting, starting fashion lines, alcholic bevs and etc. Other companies see how feasible it is to incorperate hip hop into marketing their products and brings a new cash flow into hiphop. There's a bigger pie out there for people to get a piece of. Geniune hiphop music has been sold out for financial gain. We just gotta accept that.

Hip Hop died with Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. What we have today is rap. Before then, it was all about the music. After those two died everyone was scared to make art. They had to be soo hard you wouldn't mess with them. It wasn't to long ago that songs like "Return of the Funky Man" by LOTU was the norm. Now you even have herbs like Lupe Fiasco being disrespectful and trying to be hard.

I agree with Legend on most points. What happened was that Hip-Hop expanded outside of it's core fanbase, much like wrestling did. And like wrestling, they saw the amount of money out there to be had and it got real gimmicky. (I know that's not a word) Now to a certain extent, it's the fans who blew some of these so called wack rappers up. If we didn't buy their albums or buy the products they endorsed rappers wouldn't be getting these large advances from these record labels. Thus rappers would be still rapping to show the masses that they're nice on the Mic instead of trying to sell. There's nothing wrong with them making money, the problem is that too many of these rappers are becoming the record labels puppets. And of course the latest trend, ringtone rappers. Once Hip-Hop became corporate we saw a big change in the music. The majority of rappers use to go into the studio to release some stress and to talk to their communities. Now I believe too many create music that will be remembered as jingles.

By no means is Legend saying that EVERYTHING/ONE out there today is garbage... but too much of it is just as DSheezy implies - right out of Hollywood Shuffle. There's no question that current artists such as Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Black Thought, Common, Lupe and Jay-Z would run circles around the cats from back in the day in a cipher. But their skill and content has become the exception rather than the norm of today's standards. And when the potential of Hip Hop is wasted to that degree - it's a shame. I see Ice Cube trying to bring it back with Gansta Rap Made Me Do It, though!

I know that Hip-Hop is still alive underground. Crews like Living Legends and Rhymesayers are still keeping it alive. All i'm saying is this. THEY GET NO RESPECT IN THE HIP-HOP COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE!! Your average listener only knows what's hot right now. And 9 times outta 10 what's hot right now is straight up noise pollution. Music is supposed to be the voice of the soul and if that's the case, a lot of your favorite rappers don't have a lot in that department.

The BIGGEST problem with hip hop right now is niggas overemphasized prowess to keep it street...every rapper talks about wanting to keep it street, keep it hood...everyone is so worried about being accepted in the street that they're forgetting what their 9 to 5 is and thats too make music..real niggas in the street dont have to talk about it 24/7 cuz they're really living it. if these rappers today would step out of the box with their music and spend less time making videos for youtube and myspace and more time in the studio working on their craft, hip hop would be in much better space right now..you get more youtube videos than singles from these niggas now.
