I totally agree with the double standard between white women and black women. Here's why: 1) black women have always had to uphold the "Strong Black Woman" stereotype that we always have to be strong for our kids, men and ourselves. 2) white women have rarely had to take responsibility for their actions they have a a captain save 'em: white men. Where was dr. phil at when Mary J was going through her isues? but he rushed to save that irresponsible white country trash Brittany Spears. What about Whitney Houston she was dogged out! She had talent and she was dissmised when she was going through issues. Brittany has prove that the only talent she has is stripping around a pole half naked. Back to Black was probably the best album by a female soul singer to come out ever since Lauryn dropped Miseducation.

You're sitting there with steam coming out of your head because a black artist didnt win as many awards as she did. Why are you bringing race into her success? In Europe, they dont look at peoples skin color. So all you're really doing is being racist by saying she can get away with anything because shes white instead of focusing on the talent. This lets me know two things: (1) you dont know good music when you hear it and (2) you are probably one of the biggest haters ive ever heard.

Putting all her drug habits aside, she brought back the soul sound better than alot of artists have before. Instead of making one song sounding like it was Motown and then making a club record, the whole album had backgroup of old school soul music. Shes an excellent song writer and a great vocalist. And she happens to be white. WHO CARES!!! Get over it! Shes talented point blank.

Entertainment in this society is based on the Band Wagon fallacy. It's great because some self ordained music critic says it's great, the source gave it 5 mics, the movie got 5 stars, Ebert and Roper gave it Two thumbs up. Would she even be listened to if it wasn't for the critics riding this whack ass album? The music never speaks for itself in this society. We watch a movie listen to music with greatness already in mind. Sometimes thats a bad thing but sometimes it helps.

Amy Winehouse does Black sounding music and is a White face the fact is if she was Black she wouldn't get the same acclaim. Just like Mariah Carey same thing. She can pass for White. I think Amy Winehouse gets so much acclaim also because she makes music that isn't necessarily pop. It's a change of pace from Brittney Spears and anything else any other White girl is doing besides Joss Stone. It's mostly race I don't wanna hear this "It's all about the music bull shit." Because it isn't. The music has a little bit to do with it. And plus her music isn't that good.

Its quite obvious you havent listened to her whole album with unbiased ears or listen to her album at all. She brought back the complete sound of old school music. Not alot of artists are doing that and taking the chance to be different. And yea Erykah is extremely talented but she hasnt put a full album out since Mama's Gun. And shes a change of pace period not with whites but i guess also with blacks. Whos putting soulful music out like that lately. Damn sure aint Beyonce and like i said it isnt Erykah. Jill Scott kind of lost me on this new joint she has out. Artists like Amy and Chrisette Michele should be commended from making music that is different from the rest. I loved her album and I dont really get why the author kept comparing her and Blige, Mary's divine voice hasnt done the same kind of R&B Amy does. Sharon Jones is the only one you listed that I can see your point as being valid, the have the same band do the same kinda music and similar sound... but Amy blew up first so theres a major part of why she doesnt get the same recognition.
