Davey makes great points that for the most part are difficult to disagree with. Most of the youth of today and adults for that matter are way to concerned with bs such as 50 v. Rick Ross, American idol, John and Kate and all that other nonsense to really educate themselves about the goings on in the world and how these things really do affect us in our lives. People must be educated (and educate themselves) to gain deeper awareness and understanding of the world around them and the other people living in it.
It's also embarrassing to see members of the GOP who are so clearly ignorant of basic history and politics of Iran and the entire Middle East that they would not understand the damage that would have been done to the cause of the protesters in the streets of Iran had President Obama been more outspoken during this past week.
Much like folks wearing green without basic knowledge of Iran, and kefiyyas without knowing the political messages that they carry, the GOP would rather be caught in the cause of the moment and make sweeping statements that fail to really do anything except attempt to boost their own image, as they did during the Georgian conflict of this past year.
All that being said, the one place where Davey misses the boat is by unnecessarily throwing Israel into the mix during his last paragraph. What is currently going on in Iran has absolutely nothing to to with Palestinians and nothing to to with Israel (beyond the support Israeli's throughout the internet and twitter in particular are showing and offering the protesters), this is about an oppressive religious regime that has squashed free thinking and democracy for 30 years and who's people have finally had enough. By bringing Israel into this discussion Davey completely delegitimizes his well written and purpose driven editorial and puts himself in the same column as those who are currently condemning our President for nothing more then their own self serving political views and purposes. How unfortunate.
We can all do to further educate ourselves and discuss/debate many topics but lets not get it twisted...knowing the venom and ignorance often displayed across the blogosphere (and world in general) why confuse the issues and group unrelated (but certainly relevant) discussions together, in the end this does more damage then good.

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) — Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Sunday disputed allegations of ballot irregularities in the presidential elections, calling the possibility almost nonexistent.

Speaking to foreign diplomats in Tehran, Mottaki said an investigation into claims of fraud in the June 12 election will be announced by week’s end.

“The possibility of organized and comprehensive disruption and irregularities in this election is almost close to zero given the composition of the people who are holding the election,” Mottaki said.

He blamed Britain for interfering in the elections, saying it had been planning against the vote for more than a year.

“We witnessed an influx of people from the U.K. ahead of the election,” he said, without offering specifics.

Mottaki accused Britain of supporting followers of the Baha’i faith, a religion that originated in 19th-century Persia but which Iran does not recognize.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Mottaki is trying to turn an internal dispute into a battle between Iran and other countries.

“I reject categorically the idea that the protesters in Iran are manipulated or motivated by foreign countries,” he said in a statement.

Mottaki also said the West expects a different model of democracy from developing countries.

He brought up Kenya as an example where a power-sharing deal was implemented after a disputed election, and Zimbabwe where President Robert Mugabe was re-elected in a race that many countries said was rife with irregularities.

“Our understanding of election rules is that one who secures the majority of the votes wins,” Mottaki said. “Regarding developing countries, will democracy assume a new definition?”

The last time America was of ANY help outside it's own country was World War II. That's a FACT. Everything since has been detrimental to the country they were trying to "help". America has done nothing but fan the flames and cause more harm than good with it's foreign policy [and I mean both officially and covertly with C.I.A. etc.] for the past 60 years.

America; help your OWN homeless. And trust me they're are enough of them if you want a challenge. Help victims of drug abuse. Help end racism in your country. 50 years since the civil rights movement and racism is still rampant accross the nation.

There is nothing wrong with being aware of global issues (and trust me I know what I'm talking about the world over) and there is nothing wrong with showing solidarity towards a nation that you feel is a victim of injustice but don't let any article con you into thinking America is the solution to a problem. It isn't.

Oh and btw...do you think replacing a president is going to solve Iran's problems? Do you think putting another president in place is going to change their entire way of life? Do you honestly believe that Iran is going to change overnight and start opening McDonalds, watching MTV and discussing rap beefs?

A country with an ingrained culture of stoning women to death and jailing homosexuals cannot be changed by American intervention. They must decide for themselves to stop being fundamentalists and fanatics who are living by Old Testament values and the only way for that to happen is for the people to rise up and revolt against these injustices.

Also, I want to thank memebers of this site for supporting the students of iran, this is not the first time that students are demanding their freedom, I was in tehran in 1999 unrests and eventhough I was only 16 I protested in streets and even took a few stiches myself. This time around is different we now have the support of the world and the middle class, also the goverment can't deny the killing because now we have internet and our voice is heard everywhere. My brothers, in iran follow the hip hop daily, so it would be big support in some of the mainstream artist wear green or send a message in their videos. Britian denied it had 'manipulated or motivated' the tens of thousands of protesters in Tehran [AFP]

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, has told the US and Britain to stop interfering in the country's internal affairs following its disputed presidential election on June 12.

The US and other Western nations have criticised the police crackdown on the mass protests that followed his re-election and some have backed calls for a recount of ballots.

"Definitely by hasty remarks you will not be placed in the circle of friendship with the Iranian nation," the state-run ISNA news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying in a meeting with religious leaders and scholars on Sunday.

"Therefore I advise you to correct your interfering stances."

Since he came to office in January, Barack Obama, the US president, has stated that he would like to engage in dialogue with Iran, but on Saturday he demanded an end to the crackdown on the protests.

"We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people," he said in a written statement.

"The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights."

British 'plot'

Manouchehr Mottaki, Iran's foreign minister, earlier said that Britain had "plotted against the presidential election for more than two years" and accused the country of organising an "influx" of agents into Iran before the polls.

"Elements linked to the British secret service were flying in in droves," he said.

But David Miliband, Britain's foreign minister, dismissed claims that his country had been providing support to the tens of thousands of people who have taken to the streets.

He was quoted by Journal du Dimanche as saying that while Iran's protesters are calling for international support, "this doesn't mean we will settle the problem in place of the Iranians".

Kouchner also hailed the Iranian protesters' "courage to show their thirst for openness, freedom and their demand for electoral transparency".

Ali Larijani, Iran's parliamentary speaker, has suggested that ties with Britain, France and Germany should be reconsidered in view of their "shameful" statements on the vote, according to state radio.

As some of you have said already, the differences between Ahmadinejad and Moussavi aren't all that clear. I am glad to see the people protesting the results of the obvious bogus election. It does bring to my mind the ineptitude and lack of care that we as Americans show towards our government. We should have been in the streets like that back in 2000 when an election was stolen from us, but we sat back chillin' and as a result, we had 8 years of the worst kind of leadership in recent history. But that's another story.

The real problem in my eyes in Iran is that the the country is run by religious leaders as opposed to secular/non-religious leaders. They base all of their laws on the Qur'an and not basic, common sense principles that can be modified to fit the modern age. The only way the people of Iran will see change is if they ultimately do away with the Ayatollahs and Clerics who control the entire country. I don't know if that's possible without the help of foreign nations though.

And even if they get rid of all the above mentioned leaders, another Elephant is in the room they must deal with, and that is the Iranian Revolutinary Guard. I fear that if the Mullahs are no longer in control of Iran, the IRG will assume control and that could possibly be worse than what they currently have. It is a very dangerous situation in Iran and I don't know which outcome would be worse.

I hope the people there stay strong and bring about the change that will help move Iran forward, and not backward.

LOL. I don't agree with everything you said, but I agree with 90% of it. We need to adopt that Isolationist policy when it comes to that region. The American Foregin policy has only served to create more havoc over there than anything else. In my eyes, that wasn't done by accident, meaning that those policies weren't crafted to be something good and decent and something bad happened along the way to f&ck things up. Everything was done purposefully. IF people look back on the US involvement in the Middle East, you'll see that we helped overthrow the Shah of Iran in the 50's, supported Saddam Hussein in his war against Iran, the Bush administration's idea of exporting democracy got Hezbollah rightfully elected in Lebanon a few years back, and we basically helped create the modern day Taliban and Al-Qaeda. And to hear Republicans on tv, saying that the Barack needs to do more in terms of helping Iranian protesters are fucking ridiculous. And last but not least, I'd say the majority of the reason why the Arab/Muslim world has issues with the US is because of the constant, and enduring support for Israel and their policies towards countries like Palestine and Iran. We should move out of the region entirely and let them all kill each other and let Allah sort out the mess.

But the writer does not say anything about an official statement made by the government or who the person is which represents Iran that confessed to the "ballot stuffing." So I'm still a little wary of that article and pretty much everything I hear about Iran.

I mean cmon man, the last part of the article just talked about Obama and criticized him on the whole situation rather than addressing the source of the info. Though I agree, Obama needs to take a different approach on the matter, I'm still not 100% convinced about the "ballot stuffing" (based on that article anyway).

Keep that info coming though! I may not trust it, but I still read it and like to hear as many point of views as possible.

President Obama called on the Iranian government to allow protesters to control the streets in Tehran. Would Obama or any US president allow protesters to control the streets in Washington, D.C.?

There was more objective evidence that George W. Bush stole his two elections than there is at this time of election theft in Iran. But there was no orchestrated media campaign to discredit the US government.

On May 16, 2007, the London Telegraph reported that Bush regime official John Bolton told the Telegraph that a US military attack on Iran would "be a 'last option' after economic sanctions and attempts to foment a popular revolution had failed."

We are now witnessing in Tehran US "attempts to foment a popular revolution" in the guise of another CIA orchestrated "color revolution." It is possible that splits among the mullahs themselves brought about by their rival ambitions will aid and abet what the Telegraph (May 27, 2007) reported were "CIA plans for a propaganda and disinformation campaign intended to destabilize, and eventually topple, the theocratic rule of the mullahs." It is certainly a fact that the secularized youth of Tehran have played into the CIA's hands.

The Mousavi protests have set up Iran either for a US puppet government or for a military strike. The mullahs are in a lose-lose situation. Even if the mullahs hold together and suppress the protests, the legitimacy of the Iranian government in the eyes of the outside world has been damaged. Obama's diplomatic approach is over before it started. The neocons and Israel have won.

The US intervention and the orchestrated disinformation pumped out by the western media are so transparent that it is impossible to believe than any informed person or government is taken in. One cannot avoid the conclusion that the West wants the 1978 Iranian Revolution overthrown and intends to use deception or violence to achieve that goal.

It has become increasingly difficult to believe that facts and truth motivate the western news media. For the record, I would like to point out a few of the most obvious oversights, to use an euphemism, in the Iran reporting.

According to a wide variety of news sources (for example, London Telegraph, Yahoo News, The Globe and Mail, Asbarez.com, Politico), "Before the polling closed Mr. Mousavi declared himself 'definitely the winner' based on 'all indications from all over Iran.' He alleged widespread voting irregularities without giving specifics and hinted he was ready to challenge the final results." Other news sources, which might not have been aware that the polls were kept open several hours beyond normal closing time in order to accommodate the turnout, reported that Mousavi made his victory claim the minute polls closed.

Mousavi's premature claim of victory before polling was over or votes counted is clearly a preemptive move, the purpose of which is to discredit any other outcome. There is no other reason to make such a claim.

In Iran's system, election fraud has no purpose, because a small select group of ruling mullahs select the candidates who are put on the ballot. If they don't like an aspiring candidate, they simply don't put him on the ballot.

When the liberal reformer Khatami ran for president, he won with 70% of the vote and served from 1997-2005. If the mullahs didn't defraud Khatami of his win, it seems unlikely they would defraud an establishment figure like Mousavi, who was foreign minister in the most conservative government, and is backed by another establishment figure, Rafsanjani.

As Mousavi was seen as Rafsanjani's man, why is it "unbelievable" that Ahmadinejad defeated Mousavi by the same margin that he defeated Rafsanjani in the previous election?

Neoconservative Kenneth Timmerman let the cat out of the bag that there was an orchestrated "color revolution" in the works. Before the election, Timmerman wrote: "there's talk of a 'green revolution' in Tehran." Why would protests be organized prior to a vote and announcement of the outcome? Organized protests waiting in the wings are not spontaneous responses to a stolen election.

Timmerman's organization, Foundation for Democracy, is funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) for the explicit purpose of promoting democracy in Iran. According to Timmerman, NED money was funneled to "pro-Mousavi groups who have ties to non-governmental organizations outside Iran that the National Endowment for Democracy funds."

The US media has studiously ignored all of these highly suggestive facts. The media is not reporting or providing objective analysis. It is engaged in a propagandistic onslaught against the Iranian government.

We know that the US funds terrorist organizations inside Iran that are responsible for bombings and other violent acts. It is likely that these terrorist organizations are responsible for the burning buses and other acts of violence that have occurred during the demonstrations in Tehran.

A writer on pakalert.wordpress.com says that he was intrigued by the sudden appearance of tens of thousands of Twitter allegations that Ahmadinejad stole the Iranian election. He investigated, he says, and he reports that each of the new highly active accounts were created on Saturday, June 13th. "IranElection" is their most popular keyword. He narrowed the spammers to the most persistent: @StopAhmadi, @IranRiggedElect, and @Change_For_Iran. He concludes that the new Twitter sites are propaganda operations.

One wonders why the youth of the world, who do not protest stolen elections elsewhere, are so obsessed with Iran.

The unexamined question is Mousavi and his motives. Why would Mousavi unleash demonstrations that are obviously being used by a hostile West to discredit the government of the Iranian Revolution that overthrew the US puppet government? Are these the actions of a "moderate"? Or are these the actions of a disgruntled man who kept his disaffection from his colleagues in order to gain the opportunity to discredit the regime with street protests? Is Mousavi being manipulated by organizations funded with US government money?

John Bolton laid out the US strategy. First we try to destabilize the regime. Failing that, we strike them militarily. As this strategy unfolds, Iranians will pay in lost independence or in blood for the naiveness of its secularized youth and for the mistake the mullahs made in trusting Mousavi.
