I know for a fact, when I was coming up on in the Bronx (i'm 31) & we would have our ciphers, freestyle ment just rhyming without a specific subject matter.

It could be written, or off the top, but there was no specific subject matter involved.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A controversial history lesson left parents and teachers upset in Union County. The teachers plan to write letters to leaders at the historic Latta Plantation about their disapproval of a hands-on history lesson during a Rea View Elementary class trip Wednesday.

During a lesson on the Civil War, tour guide Ian Campbell, made black students pretend to be slaves in front of their white classmates.

Campbell said he's been a historian for more than 15 years. "I am very enthusiastic about getting kids to think about how people did things in 1860, 1861, even before that period."

One parent said Campbell took his enthusiasm too far when he picked three black elementary school children out of a group of mostly white students to play the role of cotton picking slaves during a his hands-on history lesson. The parent says the students were also made to wear bags used to gather cotton around their necks.

Campbell said, "I was trying to be historically correct not politically correct."

Charlotte-Mecklenburg NAACP President Kojo Nantambu disagrees. He said, "There is a lingering pain, a lingering bitterness, a lingering insecurity and a lingering sense of inhumanity since slavery. Because that's still there you want to be more sensitive than politically correct or historically correct."

Although Campbell defends his decision, he says in the future he will take a different approach. "I'm going to start asking for volunteers instead of calling people from the audience. I think that would make it a lot easier that way if someone is afraid of public speaking or getting up in front of peers it wouldn't embarrass them," Campbell said.

"Even if the black children had volunteered, I probably would have tried to use all of the children," Nantambu said. "That would have made all the children feel equal in the experience."

Ian Campbell said he's done lessons like this in the past, but this was his first complaint.

A spokeswoman for the Union County school district said administrators were "surprised by the lack of sensitivity" of the presentation. Parents plan to meet with school administrators Friday morning to address their concerns

I think she's catching alot of flack bcuz she's attractive and she doesn't 'kick knowledge' like most classic emcees. personally i don't think she killed the cypher but her verse, written or otherwise, was better than a few of the other rappers; other than the heavyweights..i'e. black thought, mos def, budden, krs one.

also, there's been alot of debate recently over eminems verse...so i'll give my take on it. I AM an Eminem fan and as an em fan i will say that he did NOT kill that cypher. his line about osama,obama, and dahmer was dope as hell but that's it. the rest of the verse was just a build up to that.

i don't think black thought is getting enough props for HIS verse. his verse was by far the illest. it had content and stellar delivery. he sounds like a true vet everytime he spits. Krs one gets all my respect for just coming off the dome. he was the only one that did that and he should be commended for coming up with a dope rhyme off the top.

as for freestylin?....im a student of the artform so i feel similar to what alot of you others feel but keeping it real...most niggaz don't freestyle...or should i say freestyle well. there are alot of popular and classic rappers that put out 'freestyle' tracks that are really not freestylin...so i'll just say that i don't hold people accountable for spittin writtens anymore cuz most that claim they spittin off the top are lyin  anyway. just don't spit no wack s**tfeel me?

but once again, i'm not a nicki hater or a nicki lover...but i do think she's being unfairly treated on here. is she exceptional?...not by any means but honestly, there are rappers that alot of people hold in high regard that are marginal lyricists....meth for one. and i'm speaking as a wu-tang and meth fan. but to be honest...his bars aren't that great. redman kills him almost all the time.

i think some of yall need to really listen to her bars again. they are not as bad as some are portrayin.

Okay Nicki Minaj may not be the best rapper alive, but Nicki most definately killed her cypher. The animation and funny faces that she makes when she rhymes bring character to her flow. I'm sorry but Joe Budden's flow was crap and boring. He seemed like he didn't even feel like being there and it was a big *yawn*. I think Nickin is marginal at best but in essence, i think her presence in the game is doing exactly what she wants it do; which is to get people to talk about her. It doesn't matter if she's great or horrible, as long as she's on everyones mind and her name is rolling off our tongues, she's winning.
