I consider myself a huge Common fan and I always give an artist credit for trying something new, but just because they make the attempt doesn't always mean it succeeds.

No hating... but no dick riding either...

I'm not a fan of this album at all. I've listened to it a few times to try to get into it.. and I just can't....

Looking forward to the next one.....

Common is a legend, period. Definitely one of my favorites ever, probably right after Jay. The lyrics he brings are just beautiful. I know a lot of people are gonna hate on Universal Mind Control, but I actually like it a lot. He said that the album is just about having fun and thats what he brought on this one.

Its not gunna sell, the common fans(like myself).. arnt going to buy it cause its too much of a risk(ill hear it, if ilike it ill buy it), and as dope as he singles was i cant do a whole album of that... So hes gunna loose hardcore fan sales

and the sinles didnt perform commercially for him to atract any new fans.. so he's kind of in a rut.

Good interview. Common probably fits somewhere into my Top 10 or 15. I don't think he selling out, he's just growing as an artist but I haven't really heard anything from this new album that caught my ear yet - "Announcement" was OK.

not liking something isn't the same as hating on it. this album is a departure from the previous two well centered common albums. Not my cup of tea. Maybe this is who he is now. He tried on Electric circus and it wasn't the right market. I think this album is going to be well received globally and in clubs and raves. I don't think I'm taking this ride though.

im a huge common (sense) fan, ever since can i borrow a dollar. i have UMC and im not that impressed. its below standard for him. only 10 tracks and the neptunes prod is played out. id love for him to do a full album w/ premier.

Im from the chi and i dont know what it is but all we get is wack wanna be pop artists. (common, kanye, twista--fell off) Seems like in chicago we lack a unique style or sound that makes us stand out compared to all the coasts

Common is that dude. There will always be difference of opinion. He's selling out, he should/shoud not work with this producer or that producer, and so forth and so on. Common gives a different vibe or something different on almost every album (BE and Finding Forever feel similar IMO).

How many 'true' hip hop artist have had at least 8 albums put out in their career?

Now that he is in commercials, has sponsorships, and is in movies, it ain't the same for some folks. It's like a crab in the bucket mentality, you can't have it one way. I change, you change, we change, if there was no change there would be no progress.

Hip-hop went from being the voice of the urban youht into a multi-billion dollar business. If you can make a living, do what you love to do, affect lives, and be true to yourself what can top that?

If you a common fan then u go buy it. I dont get that at all. I've only heard a couple of the songs and i'm feeling them. If you a hardcore fan then you buy it. If you dont buy it then dont consider yourself a hardcore fan...is the way i see it. Not hating either just dont get the thought process on that one.

Am i the only one that liked Electric Circus too?

haven't heard the album yet but I will buy it. Period. I'm one of the few who actually really liked Electric Circus, for the most part, in trying to understand what he wanted to do as an artist/musician, so this doesnt seem like too much of a stretch from what I can tell so far.

I don't believe that. I believe that a person picks the ones that he/she thinks are good. I can be a fan but I'm only going to spend money on something I'm feeling. It makes no sense to spend your hard earned cash to purchase a cd that you're hardly going to play.

Doesn't mean, I'm not a fan. Just means I don't like THIS particular album.

Agreed. That's how I got to be with Prince a few years back--just wasn't fond of most of his newer material (like, post 2000-2001) overall.

I didn't think Common was capable of making anything that I wouldn't like but I have to say that i'm not feeling his new album...I thought he was done with the experimental phase of his career (Electric Circus) but I guess I was wrong...I have no problem with a artist switching up and trying new things but his last two albums were CLASSICS so why stray away from a winning formula at this point in his career???? Common is one of my all time favorite MCs and I will continue to support dude but he did let me down a little with this album...

I think it comes down to what kinda fan you are...are you a bandwagon Common fan (those who weren't fans before BE),or a die hard Common fan (day one fans)...The bandwagon fans will like this new Common because it's new...Anything he comes out with is acceptable to bandwagon fans because they just wanna be down...They force theirselves to like whatever he comes out with because they have no knowledge or history of Common to be able to draw an accurate opinion...The die hard Common fans know that Common can do better based on his 7 previous albums...Die hard fans know that this new album doesn't come close to any of his other albums (not even Electric Circus)...We hold Common at a higher standard so when he drops a less than spectacular album, we hold him accountable (which is why he is receiving so much negative feedback from his fans)...You do have your stubborn die hard fans who will never admit their artist dropped something wack but that's a different story lol...The bottom line is that if you are really a fan of Common, you should be able to admit that this is not a very good album...I'm reading too many comments of ppl sayin' "well if you're a true fan of Common, then you should like this" etc...The truth is that if you're a true fan of anybody you should be able to admit when they put out something wack!!! (Lil Wayne fans will never admit it lol)
