It always appeared to me as a Casual observer, that Guru feels like he never got or gets his Due and Primo always outshined him. He's right on both accounts, but He was at his best with Primo and Primo always laced Guru with Heat on Gangstarr records, and after all, Primo is Primo.

Love Guru, I understand his irritation people are always trying to be nostalgic when time and life moves on. With that being said, I don't really feel his new song. On one hand he talks about being new and let the past be the past. Yet on the song he talks about Latin Quarter, Rooftop, 125th street, etc.. Whats neo about that? Any way I will always give much respect and honor to Guru. He helped Hip Hop stay afloat when cats were abandoning ship to do other hop.

I would say to him don't disassociate yourself from your past because many of us are connected to you through your past.

i really dont get what guru's problem is... he had the best producer in hip-hop crafting his catalogue and he threw it away and refuses to record with premo or even go back and talk about his old work.. and now he's all over solar's dick, and dude's mediocre and his production doesnt always match guru's voice and flow..

basically, i just think he's bitter that premier was the bigger deal in gangstarr.. and he's right.. the gangstarr records are classics.. but u could have thrown guru off those records and put any other half decent rapper on them and the shit's would still be hot.. but if u took guru's vocals and put them on lesser production, u'd get what he has with solar: mediocre music that nobody gives a fuck about..

frankly, i'm glad gangstarr is no more. fuck guru's ungrateful ass. the less music premo is throwin at guru for gangstarr joints, the more music he can provide to better mcs like royce, teflon, blaq poet, and termanology.

Second, I am in a state of shock, I came up in the late eighties into the ninetys. I bumped Gangstarr. I am just tripping on how this nigga can shit on the Gangstarr fanbase like that.

Guru was an architecht. He created Gangstarr before Primo even showed up. Then when Gangstarr became him and Primo he helped bring out alot of artists that we know love and respect (M.O.P., Group Home, Jeru etc.). But without Primo, Gangstarr or Guru would have been what? I feel Guru in not wanting to dwell on the past, but like dude above me typed, if it wasn't for that past folks wouldn't know nor care about him. Unfotunately for his new venture with Solar, Guru will always be associated with Gangstarr, which isn't necessarily the case for his "Ex-DJ".

To Gang Starr's fans, it's common knowledge that Guru and Preme had ups and downs. I've heard Preme in old interviews talk about fistfights and shootouts between them. But for Guru to say they were never close? If I'm not mistaken they were roommates for a time. Besides that, Guru talks about all the new fans and all the sold out shows and how important a "movement" this 7 Grand shit is. The only people I hear talking about 7 Grand is Guru and Solar. In Solar's defense, it must be a real shitty situation to follow a cat that's regarded by many as one of the best producers in hip-hop history, if not THE best. I've honestly haven't heard a lot of dude's stuff but what I did hear didn't keep me up at night wonderin' "how did he make that track?" I respect Guru wanting to move on but tryin' to run from the past is like runnin' on a treadmill.

I have some of the GURU/Solar albums because I'm a fan of GURU and I have to say that this new stuff he is on is not tight at all.

The shows are sold out because your fans want to hear Gangstarr music, not this new stuff. It sounds like the stuff that is coming out of Europe right now. Do all of the true hip hop heads a favor. Get back to the basics. Get in the lab, get with Preemo and let's see a reunion album. PLATINUM!

He does sound bitter as hell, and while i consider Gangstarr rap legends i wouldn't put Guru in my top 30 rappers of all time honestly, but Step In The Arena and The Moment of Truth albums are hands down classics. That new song is wack to man, thats nothing you prob would catch anyone riding in there car jamming.

I hate myself for even saying this because I respect Guru more than alot of the cats doing it now and he is truly wild with his monotone style, but the feeling I get is that he may be bitter and or envious about Preemo's success as a producer. The way he refered to him as his ex DJ is rather dismissive and not representative of somebody who thought they were equals in a group. Guru may have had the vision, but Premiere is the architect of that sound. I mean, he really hasn't talked to anybody from the foundation? No Jeru? Lil Dap? Freddi Foxx? Im confused by his attitude, but I respect his place to be how he is. What he really needs to realize though is that no one in the states is checking for him and Solar which is fine because there is a huge Eurpoean market open to them. Good luck Guru, do your thing!

Remember his Jazzmatazz projects they was alright but nowhere near the shit he did with Premo , I remember him on a nother non Gangstarr project and him getting smoked on a Heavy D posse cut featuring Biggie called "A Bunch Of Niggas" and the shit he's doing with Solar is not the worst i've heard but it will not add any points on his legend and is mediocre at best . and he wouldn't have needed no autotune if he was with Pemo

I just read this article and then re-read it.
First off Guru is coming off hella salty. He refers to Primo as his "Ex-DJ" what's that about? He won't even show proper respect to the man who created the Gangstarr Sound...that's a sucka move.

Second, he doesn't even mention Lil Dap or Group Home, Jeru, M.O.P. etc..these groups collectively made Gangstarr HOT!

Third, he's talking about leaving the past in the past, but the sad thing is 90's hip-hop is arguably the BEST era of hip-hop, from coast to coast; to not give proper respect to what made you a "Legend" is a weak move.

After reading this article I got onto Rhapsody and peeped his latest venture out with Solar...Guru 8.0 Lost and Found...this album is seriously lacking in production value and MC skills. He has a track on this album titled Best of My Yearz...well Guru you right, the best of your years have come and gone...like Brett Favre he don't know when to get out of the game...he thinks he still got "Skillz" to get it done...sorry you coming up shorter than a midge my man..

now, that's a bit much from a legend whose lyrical output is well respected and documented. i've been a fan of Guru and Premier since "Gusto" (i know--whuh?) and to not appreciate the legacy of his own group, and to force-feed us a cat in Solar whom we do NOT care about--at all, is sad.

I once spent a small amount of time a while back chilling backstage @ a gig with guru & solar amongst others - & I'm telling you straight that Sonar is the classic example of a con artist - he has Guru totally brainwashed & under his spell, & was constantly bigging him up & telling him he's the greatest rapper ever, retaining his trust through an excessive amount of compliments, whilst also sneakily reminding him solar is the greatest producer ever!! (eek)

His way of interacting with guru tells me he's spent a lot more time studying mind control than he has making beats, real talk!! Guru is like a little puppy following him around, no wonder he comes across as so lost in this interview without him...

Fine, Guru...let's talk about Guru 8.0:

No Gimmick Sh*t is HOT.
Best of My Yearz is aiight, but it honestly sounds like Premo lite. And those snares are the worst I've heard in all my years!
I'm not feelin Divine Rule, but I respect that other cats might be.
After Time is aiight, but the chipmunk voice is played.
Stop Frontin is almost good, but sounds a little dated.

The rest is GARBAGE...for three reasons:

1) It's actually OVERproduced! The mix is WACK, and Solar fills every space with weak drum rolls, lame sound-effects, etc. It's like he tried to throw every trick into every song...it's ridiculous! Even though I'm not a professional, even I know the difference between making music somebody's gotta rhyme INTO, as opposed to a tight instrumental...you gotta leave some space, if not in the beats then at least in the EQ or the reverb space!! Even 9th Wonder and the Bomb Squad, both of whom have very dense tracks, are able to make it work for their emcees. Take a lesson.

2) Beyond spacing, the music doesn't even SOUND GOOD! Yo Guru - Solar is NOT a superproducer, or the hottest in NY, or whatever you keep repeating like a mantra, until he makes something the PEOPLE feel is hot. Maybe he's technically sound, maybe some things he does in the studio are be innovative, but the end product is, as Simon Cowell would say, "Not memorable". The worst mistake you could have made, by the way, is to go from one single-producer situation to another. At least get a couple of other cats involved...it ain't a money thing, because LOTS of even big-name cats are able to make it happen for reasonable rates.

3) Guru ain't Big or Pac...but at his best, he can create LEGENDARY lyrics. I can quote 5 of his verses any time of day. But hot, focused beats inspire great rhymes from great emcees. If the beats were better, Guru would have written better rhymes and smashed it. As it is, it's not anywhere NEAR what he's capable of - And if the lyrics WERE better, then I'd be even MADDER about Solar drowning it out with garbage.

Here's my advice. And it's all love, son.

1) Many TRUE superproducers don't do ALL the production on an album, not even on their own albums. Mix it up a bit. Call up 9th. Mix in some Organized Noise. Maybe a little Hi-Tek...just not 100% Solar.

2) We get it, that you're tired of being [Batman and] Robin. But the more you complain about it you're actually give people MORE to talk about!

3) Get on Twitter and do your own marketing, so people can directly feel you, and you don't fall into these crazy arguments with reporters.

That video was the most boring I've seen in years. I hope this wasn't Solar again. Whoever did it needs to fall back. If it was Solar, then he IS a jack of all trades...and master of none.

You GOTTA do better than this.

Hip hop is raw, it's grimy, it's lyrical, it's funky, it's soulful, it's dope rhymes over dope beats and Solar's production is not doing it for my ears. Guru, don't be mad at the fans, what we are hearing is not dope. You clearly have soul out. Hip hop is street music. You and Solar are chasing after the 106 & Park $$$. We all embraced your Jazzmatazz series because it was dope! We heard your vision. The first two were dope and the last two were just okay. Hip hop is dusty records, and I'm speaking from a hip hop culture perspective. You and Solar are in the "RAP GAME" now, not hip hop culture. No one in the hoods of the U.S.A. is feeling your new music, only Europe, except the cats who are about hip hop culture, which u have clearly disbanded legend and now ya legacy is tainted. Get back with DJ Premier or at least Pete Rock, Large Pro, Alchemist, Showbiz...shit, I'll even throw in Dr. Dre. Dope producers have ears to create. Anybody can create a beat or track. How can you go from the best to less??? We know your ego is hurting but somebody needs to be the bigger adult and squash this B.S., DJ Premier is ready, read his interviews Guru. That brotha said, he will drop everything to make a Gangstarr record. It may be industry as u claimed BUT the streets know the deal & that new Guru music is not the deal. Some sell their soul to have mass appeal. Big up to Gangstarr, Big Shug, Jeru Da Damaja, Group Home, Krumbsnatcha & others who were associates of this great crew.

Yes Guru, we understand that this 2009 and it is dangerous to be stuck in a specific era of music but how can you shit on Gangstarr?. I don't see how you can make "Make'em pay" and try to rationalize auto tune and it still wouldn't be a radio hit, so why?.

You probably got tired of every single media outlet asking "When you going to be back with Premo?, what happened to Gangstarr?", but you can't just outright shit on the fanbase that grew up to your music.

I never saw Premo as the greater half of the group, it was a DYNAMIC DUO collabo.

I can see why he is upset. I am a huge Gangstarr fan. The first album with Solar was not good. The Jazzamataz 4 record was great. Probably his best album vocally. Solar's production on the album was really good too and it was slept on. No publicity. It was one of the best hip hop albums that came out that year and he had to cancel the american tour cause there was no support for it. That is why he is salty, cause we didn't give one of his best pieces of material a chance. All we want to hear about is Gangstarr and I can understand that too.

2 other thoughts: one, it's funny that Guru and Big Shug started Gang Starr together yet Shug is the one still rolloin' with Preme. I am Djehuti Ausar aka Big Deal of Wu-Tang/Harlem6.
I read this interview and I have a few comments. Being a person that worked with guru for 3years as his personal sound engineer, I can say that yes, he does sound bitter and probably is. I felt the need to response when I read that he said that he and Solar was friends first before they started working together and that is a flat out lie!!!!

Guru was introduced to Solar by the god Black Jesus of Wu-Tang/Harlem6, which I am producer of. When Solar came into the picture he came in producing beats as he does now and there was no prior friendship with Solar before they started working together.

Solar came into the picture and disrupted the projects that we were working on and poisoned his mind against Black Jesus, myself and others that were involved.

I must say that I do appreciate what Guru did for me. He took me on tour to Dj for him in 2001 and 2002, where I was able to see alot of Europe and Nigeria, Africa.

Now on a present note... I would appreciate all of you that read this to go to itunes and purchase the new single "Ode To The Wu" by Wu-Tang/Harlem6
and please go to my youtube page and get ur minds right!!! :-)
