With that being said, I don't really feel his new song. On one hand he talks about being new and let the past be the past. Yet on the song he talks about Latin Quarter, Rooftop, 125th street, etc.. Whats neo about that? Any way I will always give much respect and honor to Guru. He helped Hip Hop stay afloat when cats were abandoning ship to do other hop.

I would say to him don't disassociate yourself from your past because many of us are connected to you through your past.

Much respect and Love

re: Guru: Never Going Back

i agree with frehk82...i think guru feels unappreciated...i thinke he is out to get the props he deserves...he sounds very irritated and annoyed in the article...i respect the fact that you do have to move on in life..but i think his best days are behind him...peace to gangstar...legendary rap group...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPDXCvd0Rdc

re: Guru: Never Going Back

Yeh Guru sounds hurt -I wonder what happened?..

re: Guru: Never Going Back

"hard to earn" was my first guru(gangstarr) tape I was probably 12 or 13 when I copped it. He created Gangstarr before Primo even showed up. Then when Gangstarr became him and Primo he helped bring out alot of artists that we know love and respect (M.O.P., Group Home, Jeru etc.). But without Primo, Gangstarr or Guru would have been what? I feel Guru in not wanting to dwell on the past, but like dude above me typed, if it wasn't for that past folks wouldn't know nor care about him. Unfotunately for his new venture with Solar, Guru will always be associated with Gangstarr, which isn't necessarily the case for his "Ex-DJ".

re: Guru: Never Going Back

To Gang Starr's fans, it's common knowledge that Guru and Preme had ups and downs. I've heard Preme in old interviews talk about fistfights and shootouts between them. But for Guru to say they were never close? If I'm not mistaken they were roommates for a time. Besides that, Guru talks about all the new fans and all the sold out shows and how important a "movement" this 7 Grand shit is. The only people I hear talking about 7 Grand is Guru and Solar. In Solar's defense, it must be a real shitty situation to follow a cat that's regarded by many as one of the best producers in hip-hop history, if not THE best. I've honestly haven't heard a lot of dude's stuff but what I did hear didn't keep me up at night wonderin' "how did he make that track?" I respect Guru wanting to move on but tryin' to run from the past is like runnin' on a treadmill.

re: Guru: Never Going Back

WOW! Let me say this first. GURU is a legend and he gets props from all of the MC's from his era and the current one. I mean top 5 hip hop groups of all time.....

EPMD
Gangstarr
A Tribe Called Quest
De La Soul
Outkast

Now he on some he doesn't think he is appreciated type ish. Get the f**k outta here wit that ish. Preemo held him down when he got caught up back in 96 when Moment Of Truth came out. Now I'm a fan of GURU (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) and I have every Gangstarr and Jazzmatazz album but I have to agree with the consensus and say the stuff with Solar is garbage. I have some of the GURU/Solar albums because I'm a fan of GURU and I have to say that this new stuff he is on is not tight at all.

The shows are sold out because your fans want to hear Gangstarr music, not this new stuff. It sounds like the stuff that is coming out of Europe right now. Do all of the true hip hop heads a favor. Get back to the basics. Get in the lab, get with Preemo and let's see a reunion album. PLATINUM!

re: Guru: Never Going Back

I think if you consider yourself a "Hip Hop Lengend" (which Guru is, no doubt), then you shouldn't get salty when people ask you about what you did to gain that status.

Dude just sounded like he was in a bad mood.

re: Guru: Never Going Back

Guru really hates when u talk about Gangstarr I guess, some bad shit happened there!

GreasySupreme dont start that Common talk with targetting other rappers cause it aint ur style. He does sound bitter as hell, and while i consider Gangstarr rap legends i wouldn't put Guru in my top 30 rappers of all time honestly, but Step In The Arena and The Moment of Truth albums are hands down classics. That new song is wack to man, thats nothing you prob would catch anyone riding in there car jamming.

re: Guru: Never Going Back

basically what everyone above me said. dude is real bitter in this article. that new music is not the business.

re: Guru: Never Going Back

*I'M HOPING THERE WILL BE A PART II TO THIS INTERVIEW...

Entitled:"GOING BACK" (With Jigsaw interviewing BOTH Guru AND Preemo "Gangstarr"...and talking about the 20 year anniversary of the classic "No More Mister Nice Guy". And speaking on the next "Gangstarr" project)

Hey its nothing wrong with dreaming, right??

*Preemo, holla at ya boy Guru and squash that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Divine, PEACE!

re: Guru: Never Going Back

I agree with Breed......Dude does sound like he's got a lil' "bitchasness" in him right now. The way he refered to him as his ex DJ is rather dismissive and not representative of somebody who thought they were equals in a group. Guru may have had the vision, but Premiere is the architect of that sound. I mean, he really hasn't talked to anybody from the foundation? No Jeru? Lil Dap? Freddi Foxx? Im confused by his attitude, but I respect his place to be how he is. What he really needs to realize though is that no one in the states is checking for him and Solar which is fine because there is a huge Eurpoean market open to them. Good luck Guru, do your thing!

re: Guru: Never Going Back

Word yo... And that bullshit statement at the end, how some fans of his new stuff hasnt really herd of Gangstarr lmao I cant see that... After all Him and Solar said about new wack stuff.................. they used autotune??? I don't feel he has to be with preemo til the end, but damn man this new shit isn't the move.

It's no secret that Guru & Preemo didn't even know each other when the 1st album was made. That no more mr. nice guy album was said to have been made over the phone.Supposedly they were never even in the studio together. The former owner of "Wild Pitch records put them 2 together.

It was well known throughout NY that Guru was a Big Drunk.Mad stories of him pullin guns on preemo & them getting into str8 up fights.Guru is no slouch on the mic ,but this dude is buggin-no question.

And what was wild as hell to me is how he was wildin on boston.
I may be mistaken, but Guru wasn't a big time supporter of boston. He screamed Brooklyn so much you would never know he was from boston.I never ever seen any GangStarr videos or pics of them in boston.I even remember the skit on GangStarr Album where the cat asks Big Shug" what the fuck is up with ur man Guru?-He think he from Brooklyn? SMH

Guru from boston and moved to NYC,to me he didn't hold boston down like he should have & obviously they feel the same.I have all the Gangstar albums & Jazzmatazz, but I def won't get this joint.

Just personal opinion, but I think the shit started to go sour when Guru got very heated about the fact that people thought Preemo produced the 1st Bahamadia single" Total wreck" & Guru did that joint.I remember him getting very heated about that.He brought out Bahamadia with the Ill Kidz.He was mad salty about that one.

re: Guru: Never Going Back

JERU never fell off ... He refers to Primo as his "Ex-DJ" what's that about? He won't even show proper respect to the man who created the Gangstarr Sound...that's a sucka move.

Second, he doesn't even mention Lil Dap or Group Home, Jeru, M.O.P. etc..these groups collectively made Gangstarr HOT!

Third, he's talking about leaving the past in the past, but the sad thing is 90's hip-hop is arguably the BEST era of hip-hop, from coast to coast; to not give proper respect to what made you a "Legend" is a weak move.

After reading this article I got onto Rhapsody and peeped his latest venture out with Solar...Guru 8.0 Lost and Found...this album is seriously lacking in production value and MC skills. He has a track on this album titled Best of My Yearz...well Guru you right, the best of your years have come and gone...like Brett Favre he don't know when to get out of the game...he thinks he still got "Skillz" to get it done...sorry you coming up shorter than a midge my man..

re: Guru: Never Going Back

Damn, you all seriously think Solar is wack? You stated that this Solar produced album (Lost and Found) reminds you of some Warriors soundtrack...but Guru in the article mentions he is moving on...creating some new...how are you new if your sound is similar to some old production techniques...this is neither "moving on" or new...bottom line folks who are posting on this thread are just taken back by the fact that Guru is diss-ing what made him a legend.

If this were his debut album it would get ripped up in the Source, Vibe, XXL or whatever hip-hop magazine you may read and clowned by hip-hop fans world wide and dude would not be considered a legend...

Where's your props Guru? Guru's energy is very odd when discussing Solar, and while i appreciate him having his guy's back (no pun intended), Keith E. E comes off as protective of his friend. you ever see the two together doing an interview? peep their language around each other--body, verbal, or otherwise. like i said, this isn't a judgement; live the life you love and love the life you live. but, these guys give off the aura of being lovers.

exiting that --i feel Guru has always been an insecure cat with respect to his working with Premier. he used to complain that he never got the choice cuts from Preem to rhyme to--which is utter rubbage. Bumpy Knuckles once told a story on Squeeze Radio on WKCR in NY of how Guru had lost or left an item at a spot where Gangstarr, Foxxx, and others had stopped during traveling on tour. Guru wanted the driver of their vehicle to go back to that location to look for whatever item it was, but he was vetoed by everyone present. Freddie basically said that Guru was whining like, "if it was Premier we would have gone back!"

now, that's a bit much from a legend whose lyrical output is well respected and documented. i've been a fan of Guru and Premier since "Gusto" (i know--whuh?) and to not appreciate the legacy of his own group, and to force-feed us a cat in Solar whom we do NOT care about--at all, is sad.

re: Guru: Never Going Back

I once spent a small amount of time a while back chilling backstage @ a gig with guru & solar amongst others - & I'm telling you straight that Sonar is the classic example of a con artist - he has Guru totally brainwashed & under his spell, & was constantly bigging him up & telling him he's the greatest rapper ever, retaining his trust through an excessive amount of compliments, whilst also sneakily reminding him solar is the greatest producer ever!! He and Preme have CLASSIC albums, not cuts, but CLASSIC ALBUMS. For him to dismiss that is what in part of what killed Hip Hop. Forgetting the past should not be an option. I will never forget the first time I heard "Words I Manifest" and bugged out. But hey, you want to forget the past and stay on that AUTOTUNE ISH, fine. He clearly controls Guru with his Jedi MIND tricks. Solar is CEO of Guru's ideal, which is 7 Grand records. Solar does all the wack production, which is not hip hop to me. Solar is the creative director for all their videos. Solar always talks about producing for these great artists on the last jazzmatazz cd plus their new cd, but guess what Solar?...those great jazz artists, singers, & big up to Common were Guru's associates, not yours. Solar always interrupts Guru in interviews. Does everybody see the real picture?? Solar has Guru thinking in a dark room with no windows & clearly no furniture. Just a director's chair that says "SOLAR"......... & Guru can only sit in that chair for a few minutes because Solar will get mad at Guru, after all, he's The Super Wack Producer of 7 Bland Records. Guru needs to listen to his own vocals on that GREAT GANGSTARR CLASSIC, "MASS APPEAL". Hip hop is raw, it's grimy, it's lyrical, it's funky, it's soulful, it's dope rhymes over dope beats and Solar's production is not doing it for my ears. Guru, don't be mad at the fans, what we are hearing is not dope. You clearly have soul out. Hip hop is street music. You and Solar are chasing after the 106 & Park $$$. We all embraced your Jazzmatazz series because it was dope! We heard your vision. The first two were dope and the last two were just okay. Hip hop is dusty records, and I'm speaking from a hip hop culture perspective. You and Solar are in the "RAP GAME" now, not hip hop culture. No one in the hoods of the U.S.A. is feeling your new music, only Europe, except the cats who are about hip hop culture, which u have clearly disbanded legend and now ya legacy is tainted. Get back with DJ Premier or at least Pete Rock, Large Pro, Alchemist, Showbiz...shit, I'll even throw in Dr. Dre. Dope producers have ears to create. Anybody can create a beat or track. How can you go from the best to less??? We know your ego is hurting but somebody needs to be the bigger adult and squash this B.S., DJ Premier is ready, read his interviews Guru. That brotha said, he will drop everything to make a Gangstarr record. It may be industry as u claimed BUT the streets know the deal & that new Guru music is not the deal. Some sell their soul to have mass appeal. Big up to Gangstarr, Big Shug, Jeru Da Damaja, Group Home, Krumbsnatcha & others who were associates of this great crew.

djvinyl1973
re: Guru: Never Going Back

Great read!!!! I'm back again... Please forgive me for even making mention of Michael Jackson as we mourn his death... Imagine this though....What if Michael Jackson said that the music he made with Quincy Jones was just for that era..or he and Quincy were never really friends and just shitted on the man he made history with. Not to mention that was his 2nd time around the block. He first killed it with his brothers...Nigga, you didn't have no albums bumpin' before Gangstarr. You were happy to be on....Ya'll were one of the longest lasting groups in hip-hop...Your rhymes were mediocre to good..Just to Get A Rep was that shit..so was Code of the Streets...Greg Nice murdered you on DWYCK.. .Commercially, Jay-Z gave the Roots band a better look than Black Thought would probably ever in his career but he ain't shittin' on ?Love..He's gettin money with his Fam and well respected worldwide as an emcee... I just can't believe that interview...Gangstarr was really one of those groups and this interview tarnishes the legacy. EVERYONE KNOWS PREMIER HELD GANGSTARR DOWN WITH THE BEATS.

I honestly wish dude had bugged out a lot earlier in his career so that Premier could have broke off from him sooner andworked with some more artists. I'd like for you to look in the mirror and tell me your a legend and now think about Michael Jackson and see where you compare. His last interview in 2007 was all about his kids and the recording of his CLASSIC "Thriller" album. Never forget the past. And yes, that Solar ish is weak as all get out. You make some great points about Lee Pin Stripe Jeans but why would you go back to the past and remember that? Isn't that going against what your interview was all about... forgetting the past? Call me crazy.

re: Guru: Never Going Back

Yes Guru, we understand that this 2009 and it is dangerous to be stuck in a specific era of music but how can you shit on Gangstarr?. I don't see how you can make "Make'em pay" and try to rationalize auto tune and it still wouldn't be a radio hit, so why?.

You probably got tired of every single media outlet asking "When you going to be back with Premo?, what happened to Gangstarr?", but you can't just outright shit on the fanbase that grew up to your music.

I never saw Premo as the greater half of the group, it was a DYNAMIC DUO collabo.

This is your 20th, 20th! anniversary. I don't care how long you been with Solar, his shit is absolute garbage and does not compliment your flow. Don't talk about Premo, nor Solar, get another DJ that can tinker with your delivery.

Your not suppose to say that your a legend out of your own mouth, it just doesn't make sense. Its for your listeners to decide.

Hubcity, learn to rationalize and use proper English. No one will read your garbage nor take you seriously.

re: Guru: Never Going Back

This bitch is an asshole.

re: Guru: Never Going Back

No, No, No!!! "Supa Danger*divine rule*" WTF was that? Two, maybe Guru should get with CL Smooth, who's about as fond of Pete Rock as Guru is of Preme these days, and do an album together and name it after a classic Large Professor line: "Fuck Those Two DJ's..." Seriously, isn't it real bitch-like that Guru won't even refer to Preme by name? cappella, what is you talking about?ok, if you want the entire instrumental Gangstarr catalogue, then i'll take the a cappella version. it's a matter of taste you jokers.yeah i like music but you have to have some human words and a MESSAGE in Hip Hop.WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF CRACK HAVE YOU ALL BEEN SMOKING TRYING TO GLOSS OVER THAT. there is no Gangstarr without Guru's voice, flow and MESSAGE.and now that Guru is living his lyrics,a vegetarian, drug and alcohol free, with positivity you fold.not a good look.you pseudo fans WILL BE REPLACED,Guru just sold out concerts in japan.his new songs get as much if not more love than the older ones.he plays them all. name any other artist from his era doing what he is doing at his level.name any artist from any era any kind of music who has done what Guru has done and is going to.in my book ,Guru is the GREATEST MC OF ALL TIME.he has longevity,he put Hip Hop and Jazz together first.he has Gangstarr and Jazzmatazz.he's real, he has a message and has technique.he takes risks with his music, and he is still alive.don't forget Guru started Gangstarr....and another thing none of you cats will say anything about, the features on the new album,K Born and High Power.you haters don't want to say anything 'cause you know they are dope....and you cats are mad that Guru doesn't use other producers.how many producers are on most Gangstarr records?does Guru get props for that?which is it with you schizos?what's really important for you?...and to you fans who are like "oh Guru said one thing i don't like, now i don't like him anymore",get real...and none of you seem to understand human relationships,if you have friends who fall out,is this really how you act?taking some sad ass sides and mortgaging truth in the process?...only positivity will win in the end...

Nasty Nas Demo « Being a person that worked with guru for 3years as his personal sound engineer, I can say that yes, he does sound bitter and probably is. I felt the need to response when I read that he said that he and Solar was friends first before they started working together and that is a flat out lie!!!!

Guru was introduced to Solar by the god Black Jesus of Wu-Tang/Harlem6, which I am producer of. When Solar came into the picture he came in producing beats as he does now and there was no prior friendship with Solar before they started working together.

Solar came into the picture and disrupted the projects that we were working on and poisoned his mind against Black Jesus, myself and others that were involved.

I must say that I do appreciate what Guru did for me. He took me on tour to Dj for him in 2001 and 2002, where I was able to see alot of Europe and Nigeria, Africa.

Now on a present note... I would appreciate all of you that read this to go to itunes and purchase the new single "Ode To The Wu" by Wu-Tang/Harlem6
and please go to my youtube page and get ur minds right!!! :-)

SHM HTP (SHEM HOTEP)(farewell, peace)

Djehuti Ausar
AMRKHMWST ∆
