It’s why black women sit under those big, hot machines for hours and why black girls sometimes sit by the bedside worshipping white Barbie dolls: good hair. Chris Rock channels his inner Ken Burns, giving celebrities, hair stylists and clients, and public figures the third degree about their hair practices, however paganistic they may seem. Of course, it’s Chris Rock, the master of layering comedy with a political silver lining, so the film Good Hair asks the essential question: all that money to chemically change your hair?

Produced by Nelson George (“American Gangster”, CB4) and narrated by the Rock himself, Good Hair follows hair salons in America’s metropoles in various stages of hair consumption. The film is centered around the annual Bronner Bros hair competition, capturing the twirls and whirls, under water and upside down snipping of Atlanta’s hair battle royale. Yet as celebrated as the event is, there’s something controversial about Black women’s relationship with the hair industry and Chris Rock damn well gets to bottom of it.

Good Hair features a high profile panels of interviewees of color who give their two cents on this widely discussed issue of hair grooming practices in the American-American community. Nia Long, Lauren London, and Melyssa Ford represent the relaxed and straightened mainstream. Tracie Thoms, the natural alternative. Ice-T and Andre Harrell the male point of view, and Al Sharpton and Maya Angelou provide intellectual interpretations of the three. Together with sound bites from a few other notable names, no hair strand is left untwisted.

Rock first tackles relaxers, of which millions of ounces are produced containing the scalp mutilating ingredient sodium hydroxide. With help of a “chemistry expert”, Rock shows how the same chemicals, which Black women and girls as young as three years old use in their hair, can burn through a soda can in only hours. Rock also shows how of these endless brands of Black hair products, only a small percent of them are Black owned or as Al Sharpton thought provokingly puts it, “Black women wear their economic exploitation on their head”.

Rock’s hilarious social commentary also brings him to India where he searches for the origin of packaged hair. He discovers that the same hair that Black women pay thousands of dollars for in hair salons across the country, pious young girls at Buddhist temples sacrifice for free. This seemingly ludicrous see-saw of supply and demand inspires Chris Rocks to bundle a large bag of “Black hair” and try to sell it to beauty supply stores in Los Angeles. Of course, his little experiment yields no buyers, but does yield racist statements from an Asian shop owner who adamantly tries to convince him that Black women don’t want hair that looks “too Africa”.

Nia Long and Melyssa Ford break down the culture of weaves and from their testimony it is clear how the dealing of Indian hair has become big business. Sharon Jones, who also sat for an interview, humorously noted that in every black city, one can catch a glimpse of unwanted “tumbleweave” blowing through the streets during the day.

Good Hair thrives off of clever quips from Chris Rock and funny anecdotes from men and women who visit barbershops and hair salons across the country. When asked that last time he touched a Black woman’s hair, one man in an Harlem barbershop replied, “1986. Before the market crashed...”

At the end of the day, Good Hair steers away from self-righteousness by not casting judgment on the women who do choose to chemically alter their hair. Throughout the movie, Chris Rock takes a moment or two to consider how his findings on Black hair will influence his daughters, and he comes up with the a propos solution to tell them what goes on top of their heads is not nearly as important as what goes in their heads. Ice-T echoes similar sentiments about the triviality of the straighten vs. natural debate when he says that Black women should have what they want because if they don’t, “they could bring a whole lot of fucking pain”. Good Hair is a funny conversation starter.

It premiered at the Tribeca theatre in NYC, thanks to sponsors, Dr. Miracles and Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN), to very warm reception and if taken to heart, the film might even change some lifestyles.

I feel like women of all races have something about them that they don't like..thats why black women spend thousands of dollars on there hair trying to look more acceptable in a white society...for white women they spend a lot of time in tanning beds trying to look darker or getting collagen injections in there lips and butt trying to look more like black women... Indian women get skin lighting treatments....Asian women get eyelid surgery to make them look more westernized.... even women in Iraq get nose jobs....I'm not sure why all women can't just be happy with whats unique to there race instead of trying to take other attributes from other races pretty soon everybody is just gonna look the same

I've had long hair all my life because i don't load it up with a buncha products and put a lot of heat on it. I love having black hair...i can do whatever i want with my sh't and it aint NEVER had nothing to do with tryin to look white or have hair like white people. My hair is past my shoulders but it aint easy to manage. If i didn't change up my style with my hair i probably wouldnt have none.

I NEVER comment on anything but I felt the need to comment on this.  I feel where everybody is coming from.  I am a black female and one thing I HATE is when people say that black women style their hair the way that they do to look more like white women.  Granted some may, but I don't think that is always the reason why we wear our hair the way that we do.  I have worn my hair every way imaginable, and one thing that I love about having black hair is that you can do so much with it.  But the main reason why I keep my hair relaxed or with weave is because it is more MANAGEABLE then wearing it natural!!  Depending on the texture of your hair, your geographical location wearing your hair natural is not an option.  The combination of the weather (humidity, rain etc) and the texture of your hair, for some women just putting their natural hair in a pony tail is a CHALLENGE!
I would be a liar if I didn't admit that there is a social issue tied to black hair but like DPikAble said every race and nationality has issues with their image.  Our society and culture puts a lot on image.  This may not be true with all black women but I know with myself the higher up in the professional relm I go the more I have to deal with some of these issues.  I remember having a job, and even though my hair is relaxed because of its texture if I wash it and let it air dry it is still pretty wavy and curly.  One day I didn't feel like going through the 3 1/2 hour process (on a good day) of straightening and styling my hair.  So I just let it air dry for 30 minutes and styled its a natural way pushed it back with a headband.  It wasn't messy or crazy.  At work I had someone ( a white person) tell me that it was policy to keep a presentable appearance, which means hair needs to be more tamed either straight, or pulled back.  Now there were white women who would come to work with their hair wet, but because my hair wasn't straight it was a problem.  People kept telling me all day "you look so different" "I didn't even recognize you."  In college I had a lot of jobs working as a waitress and I would wear different weaves curly and straight, but they would usually be long.  When I would take my hair out and wear my natural hair, I would literally loose out on tips.  Or if I started a job with my natural hair and put weave in it later on I would get more money.  And usually the change in money would come from white customers or a select few ignorant black men.  Black hair is an issue in the black community but its an issue we inherited.

Comedian Marlon Wayans is set to play legendary funnyman Richard Pryor in a new biopic.

A string of Hollywood heavyweights are lining up behind the project, which will be directed by Dreamgirls' Bill Condon and produced by Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and Pryor's widow Jennifer.

Condon is currently in negotiations with Columbia Pictures and Sandler's Happy Madison company and hopes production on "Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?" can begin next spring (10) with a budget of $20 million, according to Daily Variety.

If the deal is done, it will conclude a long battle for Condon, whose plans to cast Eddie Murphy in the lead role collapsed when a number of studios rejected the stars' pay demands.

Pryor died in 2005 from a cardiac arrest at the age of 65.

My daughter got long beautiful hair and she 3 years old, i hope when she get older, she choose not to get perms in her hair. She can get it pressed, that's cool, but that relaxer s**twill ruin your hair. Our hair is beautiful, don't forget that.

My wife, my sister, several of my cousins, and many of my friends and associates choose to wear their hair in natural styles. Their friends who don't see natural hair as an option for themselves often say that their natural hair is not "manageable" just as you did when you wrote the following:

"I have worn my hair every way imaginable, and one thing that I love about having black hair is that you can do so much with it.  But the main reason why I keep my hair relaxed or with weave is because it is more MANAGEABLE then wearing it natural!!  Depending on the texture of your hair, your geographical location wearing your hair natural is not an option.  The combination of the weather (humidity, rain etc) and the texture of your hair, for some women just putting their natural hair in a pony tail is a CHALLENGE!"

When my wife first attempted to go natural, she made what she now considers a mistake in her approach; she attempted to force her natural hair into arrangements and styles that don't fit her hair. Friends in the "my hair is not manageable" camp, who had actually tried going natural, had typically made the same error. I don't know you or your history, but is it possible that you might have done the same thing when you went natural? I ask because you mentioned that you tried to put your natural hair in a "pony tail" and you emphasized the word "manageable;" I wondered whether you might be trying to "manage" your hair into directions that might better fit another type.

In case anyone cares, here is a brief description of where I am coming from. I am a Black Man. I think all textures of healthy Black hair are beautiful, and that no texture of Black hair should be denigrated. Whether a Black Woman wear her hair is in styles that compliments her hair as it naturally grows from her body, or it is relaxed, flat-ironed, or whatever, her choice doesn't reflect her character. Also, I know and know of several professional Black Women who wear their hair naturally; I also know two women, who at different stages of their careers, were forced to straighten their hair.

Peace

However you put it perms destroy your hair, it's not natural to put chemicals on your hair. So Black women can put perms on their hair all they want, but it's not natural, it destroys your hair. Natural is the way to go for Black women.

I support any hairstyle that black women may choose to wear because it is an expression of themselves.  I truly do not like the chemicals that are touted to black people to make their hair "beautiful".  Only the individual can decide what is beauty, not some corporation.  Lye and other chemicals are so dangerous and they hurt our women's bodies and the planet.   Big ups to all my sistas out there, you're all beautiful.

@Deus-ex-Melas

I appreciate your comment.  I actually agree with you on everything you are saying.  In my comment I was basically generalizing all aspects as to why most black women wear they hair as they do.

Personally I wear my hair in various ways (relaxed, natural,weaves, and wigs) because I like the style and I see it more as an expression.  Don't get me wrong I don't change my hair every week.  (That's just tacky to me. To each their own.) Its more like whatever works for that moment, I may wear my hair natural during the summer because the texture of hair that I have, I can wash it let it air dry and go.  Or I may decide to wear a weave for a few months because I want the length of my hair to be longer (or shorter).

When I say manageable hair is because there are a lot of black women who just don't have the skill set or the time (or both skill set and time) to do their hair.  I have always been able to style my hair, my friends hair etc. But there are many women who just don't know how to do hair period (even their own hair, their kids hair whatever).  It can take me anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours to do my hair.  Mind you I'm not married, I don't have any children so I have all the time in the world to play in my hair.  So by manageable I take into consideration time.  It's much easier to get weave put in your hair and BAM your hair is done for a whole 3 weeks or longer depending on how you take care of it.

Also by manageable I take into consideration that some women do not know how to style hair, and styling their natural hair is a challenge.  I had several friends that went natural, and for the first few months to a year it was a challenge.  My cousin put braids in her hair for like 6 months until it grew to a length that she could actually style on her own.  She's been natural for almost 7 years I love it and it looks really good on her.

@Chocalate Morsel
I live in the south and it gets ugly humid out here, and I know what its like to do your hair one way and just walking to the car turns you into a french poodle.  But I know you already know that's all women.

all i know is i aint about to be walking around with my hair all over my head for the sake of being natural. Perms ruin SOME peoples hair, not EVERYBODY's...once you chemically treat your hair in ANY way, and not just relaxers, i'm talkin dyes or curly perms too, you have to take extra good care of your hair or it could be damaged. Relaxing my hair aint never messed me up...never. You wash it, you condition it real good every week or two, you don't let your hair get dry, you wrap it up in a silk scarf before you go to bed and you don't apply a lot of heat to it in the meantime. Now, that works for ME, i can't speak for everybody else. Not everybody's hair can withstand chemical treatment...

Having natural hair don't mean it have to be in the form of a afro, or all over your head. My wife got this thing called the in-styler, it can straighten your hair without putting a relaxer on it. From my understanding, wearing your hair natural, ain't that hard, like alot of women claim it to be. My wife told me all this, because me as a guy, don't really know alot about females hair, and don't really care to know. She said the women that say being natural is hard, is just an excuse to not wear it like that. But to each it's own, it don't matter to me either way. But i know natural is better and more healthier for your hair. Anything that is a chemical such as perms, cant be good for your hair, there is no way to spin that. I know women with thicker hair, it tend not to do as much damage, but nevertheless, it ruins it to a certain extent.

LOL @ the instyler...i be seein that infomercial on TV all the time! real talk tho, my hair aint no where close to thick. If i'm keepin it real i keep my hair up just to not have to do nothing to it. Its just about achieving different looks. my hair aint gonna stay straight with no press, no flat iron, no instyler...period. it would be all over my head by lunch.  if i want it to stay straight i gotta relax it. and for me it aint no biggie because i know how to take care of my hair. I guess they don't add health to your hair, but it depends on the grade and texture of what you got. i think some women just dont know how to take care of their hair. I permed my daughters hair, my mom and my auntie are mad at me for doing it, but she been gettin perms in her hair and wearing braids for 4 years now...never a problem. her hair still thick (like her daddy's) and long (like mine) but i'm sure that's because i take care of it. I seen people perm they stuff and after 3 or 4 touchups they sh't gone tho...they either didn't take care of it right, or they just dont have hair that can handle it.

But for real the in-styler is good product. My daughter is 3 years old and she got real long thick hair. See my hair is real thick and i have a good grade also. But i keep my hair cut close though, cause i can't stand having alot of hair on my head. Do you live in the South or what, I live in Texas and the weather here can, mess with women hair. But i guess you right about perms destroy some women hair and not others, but anything called a chemical treatment, can't be good for your hair overall. But you think being natural is bad, or you just saying it ain't for you.

I hate to go completely off topic and talk about something that has absolutely nothing to do with this, but what can I say? I'm opportunistic. And no, this isn't spam, I'm writing this up right now. Is anyone aware of what a GPT is? It stands for Get Paid To. It's similar to those "Paid to Surf" websites, that allows you to collect and maintain a currency, which you can later redeem for prizes. Anyways, there is this "Get Paid To" that came out 2 months ago called "Lockerz", it's ran by the CEO of Amazon.com and is funded by Liberty Media. To gain what they call "PTZ", which in other words is Lockerz $ (money), you do certain different things, such as... logging in daily (4 PTZ),  answering the question of the day (2-10 PTZ), and everytime you get a friend to join (all that your friends have to do is sign up, which doesn't include any real information if you're suspicious about anything), you'll get another 4 PTZ, per person. You can also gain up to 30 PTZ the first day, by playing a game as soon as you've registered. I got 23 this way. 23+4+4 got me 31 PTZ the first day, overall. An Xbox 360 game is only 50, that's how easy this is. An Xbox 360 console is 650 PTZ, and an iPod Touch/Phone is around 800, among lots of other prizes you can choose from. If you want to check it out and get an invite from me but are still suspicious, check their Facebook page (28,000 followers), or YouTube "Lockerz proof/unboxing", and you'll get all the proof you want. Sure you'll also be wondering, "what do they gain from this", it's a simple answer, they're funding now, and building for the future. Like I mentioned earlier, it's in beta. You won't find a single website on the web complaining about this website. I'd also like to mention that I received NHL 10 for PS3 2 days ago (had I known this website was 100% legit, I would have saved up for an Xbox 360). They re-stock every 10-15 days, and have an unofficial forum with over 10,000 members if you want daily updated/info/discussion.

For an invite, E-Mail me at theone_slaughter@hotmail.com with your request. I'll reply within 8 hours with your invite, or if I'm online, right away. I can only send so many invites out per day, so first come, first serve.
