Wow, things really took a turn last week in the NBA didn’t they? First, the Lakers hit the lottery and got Pau Gasol for basically nothing (i.e. Kwame Brown).

Then the Phoenix Suns pulled one of the most shocking trades in recent history, by shipping off Shawn Marion for Shaquille O’Neal.

How do these moves shake up the Western Conference? First of all, I can bet that a lot of teams in the West are absolutely furious at the Memphis Grizzlies for pulling a Kevin McHale-esque move by and giving up a lot for a little.

Gasol, a career 19 and 9 guy,  gives the Lakers a post player who can hit a 15-foot jump show and more importantly, can command a double team. Any big man who can command a double team will give guys like Kobe and  D-Fish open jump shots all day.

And you know Pau has no problem playing second fiddle to Kobe. That is the good thing about acquiring an All Star from a losing team. They are so happy to be out of their losing situation that they’ll happily defer to the stars on their new team - which I’m sure Kobe would have no problem with. Kobe has definitely had more bounce to his step on and off the court since the Lakers pulled the trigger on Gasol. Bryant’s confidence is at an all time high and that is not good news for the rest of the west.

I like the trade. I think when Bynum comes back, they have the tools to make a serious run at the title, and this is good for the league. I think the league and most people want to see a Lakers and Celtics NBA Final. And after what Phoenix just pulled, that might not be too far fetched.

Speaking of Phoenix, is it just me, or did this trade make absolutely no sense? Okay we get it, Shawn Marion was unhappy and there were probably factors that were going on behind closed doors regarding the Matrix. But for Shaquille O’Neal? It is one thing if the Suns traded for someone like Andrei Kirilinko or Richard Jefferson, someone who would fill in the lanes and play the uptempo Phoenix Suns’ basketball. But doesn’t getting Shaq contradict that whole strategy?

If this going to work for Phoenix, they are going to have to play a whole new system of basketball. The good news for Suns’ fans is Shaq can still demand a double team and the Suns have some good perimeter shooters. Also, he is big enough to defend the likes of an Andrew Bynum or a Tim Duncan. Plus, Shaq is not a happy camper. He knows people are criticizing his ability, so you know he’s got a big chip on his shoulder and is dying to prove people wrong.

But regardless, I still think this was a mistake. Banking on Shaq to mesh with Nash and Amare is a huge gamble. Why jeopardize the chemistry they already had? I agree with what Michael Bivins predicted in his last blog - this was the year Phoenix was to get over the hump. Now, I’m not so sure.

These final 30 games are going to be really interesting. All these big trades and free agent signings are far from done. Remember, there are still a few weeks until the trade deadline, so you never know where guys like Jason Kidd, Jermaine O’Neal or Kirk Hinrich might end up. After what we’ve seen this past week, anything can happen!

I think the Suns and Shaq will surprise many and go deep in to the playoffs. I think Shaq has a lot of heart and has pride in himself to go out and deliver, as much as I hated him in the beginning of his career, I've grown a great admiration for him and his dicipline to always do the right thing and bring his lunch pale to the arena and handle the business and go home and be a great family man we know him to be. Don't be surprised if Shaq gets his 5th ring.

say mane Phoenix had the same squad last year minus Grant Hill and didn't make it to the finals last year...Amare is their only big man...they needed another big man and Shaq was that nigga...who else could they have acquired?

obviously their uptempo approach didn't work and the suns needed more help defensively then offensively

this dude needs to realise that uptempo bullshit don't win championships, the playoffs is where the running shit stops, hell they need to compete with golden state and san antonio to win a title and they can't do that with stoudamaire being the only big. Shawn Marion is 6'7, him for the 7'1 diesel can work. Its like they saying, the 80s lakers had dudes who run the floor, but then they also had times where they slowed it down and gave the ball to Kareem. This is exactly what the Suns are thinking, and I hope it works cause this is a bold move by D'Antoni to try and get his team over the hump.

I heard someone sayin that Shaq will be good for them cause Pheonix cant run every game durin the playoffs and they need someone down in to post when they need to slow the game down cause nash is gettin old and cant run like that all the time. i kinda agreed wit it but i think kirilinko woulda been a better fit for em. I think dallas needs to make a move for Jermaine Oneal or ron artest cause everybody knows their soft. I cant wait till Bynum comes back tho to see what thats gonna look like.

Now I don't know about the Suns becoming an immediate contender, but I do know one thing; Shaq is running out of hot climate cities to play for...

1) Orlando
2) Los Angelas
3) Miami
4) Phoenix

After Phoenix refuses to re-up his contract two years from now, we can cancel Sacramento out of Shaq's next move (he called them "Queens" instead of Kings). And the Clippers are a no-go because he'd practically be sharing locker room space with Kobe.

At 38 years old (two years form now), The Big Aristotle may be left out in the cold, literally. Don't be mad, The New York Knicks are hiring...

Other fun facts... Phoenix weren't title contenders before the deal; what good is scoring 106 points per game if you can't hold your opponent under 100? They are run-and-gun, but if the game is under 90 points, there defense falls short every time.

Miami has more than losing 22 out of their past 23 games to worry about; it starts and ends with Coach/President, Pat Riley. President Riley watched from above as Steve Van Gundy coached the Heat to the top of the East, before "Firing" Van Gundy and swooping down to coach the team to a Championship. Riley has nothing left, Shaq knew it, and D. Wade, a phenomenal player, has had to much weight on his shoulders over the past three years and its becoming harder for him to stand up after each crash to the hardwood.

This was a smart deal for the future of both clubs, even if a Title doesn't come out of it...

I'm from arizona. 10 miles south of phoenix. been a suns fans since 1992.

a lot op people, from nba analyst to fans to people like you, use the suns as guinea pigs, for your entertainment until the playoffs come. then you all, including the analyst say, the suns cant run there way into the finals and look at other teams like the spurs, lakers or mavs. during the regualr season, the suns provide the most highlist for espn regardless of a win or loss. then when the playoffs come, you all say....."the playoffs are a lot different than the regualr season. everything slows down and gets physical. WELL that's where shaq is going to help. playing against the lakers is no problem...2 years in a row 1st round exit....cool. 3rd time, maybe not but who cares. 1 out of 3. when the suns play the spurs or mavs in the 2nd round round. what do y'all say. mavs or spurs in 5 or 6 cause the suns aint tough. then there's shaq. who cares if the suns are going awaw from there run-and-gun offense to a slowed down half court sets. 27-29 other teasm do it, why not the suns. just like i said. everyone uses them as entertainment purposes only. who ever your team is, you cant wait until they play the suns cause that's when your team plays the best. remeber vince carter played like crap for the raptors then later admitted that he played that way cause he didnt want to be there? then when he got to the nets he played well up into the moment they started losing games? well the suns are a winning team with over 50 wins in a season so shaq won't be superstar status, he'll be important for big guys that beat up amare like duncan, bynum, dampier, jeffereson....the big guys. NOW i'm not saying the suns are going to be better with shaq during the regular season. the suns were on there way to winning 58 games this season, but with shaq...they'll win 48-54 games. BUT when the playoffs start, then you'll see how important he's going to be because AMARE STOUDEMIRE is going to go bananas againt the other players. vs the spurs which other big guy can take amare? vs the mavs which other big guy can take amare? vs the lakers which other big guy can take amare? the suns are USING shaq as a decoy, to free amare and let him do his thing without getting into foul trouble.

Ok, let me just start off by saying I'm a Laker fan, and have always been one. (Just wan't everyone to know...) However, at first I too didn't understand the O'Neal trade and definetly thought that he was gonna mess up the team. However, upon taking a second look at the situation I realized that main reason the Suns couldn't get over the "hump" was because of their lack of defense. Shaq is obviously not the same as he was a few years ago, but is still a force in the paint, and could really help the Suns on the defensive end. Also, he can be good for the Suns when they can't play their up-tempo game, and need to slow down when playing teams like the Spurs. However, having said that, I still think there could have been someone better like Dwight Howard or perhaps Marcus Camby (who I know aren't really likely to be traded) that could fill in the defensive role just as good, or even better than Shaq, and still play good on the offensive end. In the end, Shaq has proven many people wrong throughout the years and has also brought championships to teams he has been traded to. So, I guess at the end only time can tell if Shaq is what the Suns need...

Oh yeah, and being a Laker fan I can't wait to see who and how they are going to play in the playoffs!

GO LAKERS!!!

whoever wrote this article is obviously an idiot and didn't do no damn research...it seems like his favorite words were "command a double team" and "andrew bynum"....first off any healthy, able-bodied big man "commands a double team" and secondly, Andrew Bynum is nobody...how r u gonna support ur statement by saying Shaq can't guard Bynum? he was never un-guardable in the first place...and the point about Shaq not fittin' into the Suns style of basketball-which is run and gun- is the point they're trying to admit...they had a squad with Amare, Nash, and Marion for the past couple years, but their style of play didn't garner them any rings...so that's why they're switching their tempo up and slowin' it down...cuz regardless of how good of a squad u have-not havin' a big man down low is gonna make it twice as hard....

Shaq with Nash, Stoudimire, and G.Hill? That's a fukin all-star team! Yall are seriously doubting Shaq man.....Fuk what yall are sayin...Without this trade taking place, this would've been the year that THE LAKERS got over the hump....But this trade changes everything....The Lakers Vs. The Suns playoff series will be one for the ages....But The Suns will be victorious, and WITH SHAQ on deck, the will finally be able to defeat San Antonio or Dallas...

before marion got traded, me being a suns fan - a realistic NBA fan than a specific team fan, i believed since the 10th game of the season, the suns would have lost to the lakers in the 2nd round. then when the lakers got gasol, i was even more convinced. then the suns got shaq, that would be amare vs gasol. you saw that match up in the playoffs in 2004-2005 when the suns swept the grizzlies.
