On some realness, i respect what they are trying...BUT BUT BUT how in the hell can they say stop the violence when over half of them promote violence. I can't belive them because their lyrics don't reflect this mission. They picked the wrong rappers to speak on this. I wanna believe it but HOW IN THE HELL can they preach stop the violence and then get on a track talking about Aks, 9s, 45s and murder. Hypocritical and futile attempt. Not hating, just being real. There is never a reason for violence, Cassidy. Where are people like Lupe, Mos Def, Talib, Common, Little Brother, Kanye, etc? Food for thought.

Violence has become an intricate part of Hip Hop because as a marketing tactic it is just as vibrant as gangster movies in Hollywood. I know for a fact in the streets in DC, like in most cities, violence was and continues to be a daily part of living in the city. It is not nearly as deadly as it used to be though, these youngins didn't live through the late 80s and early 90s in DC especially Southeast where I'm from. They only think they're tough now because they got little guns and shit.

I do not fault rappers for expressing that violence was a part of their neighborhoods. I have a problem with the lack of critical thinking in their expression. As artists the critical evaluation of where the violence comes from and how it impacts our psychological and sociological status in the community is important.

There is no doubt that we are a new breed, I know I grew up with sociopaths so those that came after us are ten times more crazy in terms of their judgment. The identity crisis in Hip Hop is just reflective of a bigger problem of the overdressed facade that perceives these costumed roles as a way to achieve social acceptance. The bravado and glamorization of jewelry are a form of repression. I know many of our people don't look at it like that but that is just how insidious the conditioning is.

Notice how everything is big, the big talk, the big rims, the big grills, the big chains, except the big roles we are supposed to play in actually controlling and deciding how we are perceived and where the multi-billion dollar industry we created is headed. We need to change that. I know I have my eyes set on the successors of Jean-René Fourtou, Jean-Bernard Lévy, Andy Lack, and Rolf Schmidt-Holtz. I'm thinking 20 years into the future, not just the right now.

We need to know who the real big wigs are and don't be fooled by the high paid figureheads because they keep us at each other's throat. I mean we knew the 50/Kanye thing was a marketing tactic and that is cool but why do they even have to do that? Both of them are bringing in big profits for Universal Music Group at the end of the day. The big 3 runs everything, none of these niggaz are major, they are just allowed to run their nigger kingdom. They are getting a paltry share in the big scheme of things. We are HIP HOP, but are these little millions what we should aiming for when the big 3 is making billions by creating blow pop rappers? See what I mean.

By the way I am saying don't be fooled. Notice how most of the so-called "Hip Hop moguls" made their wealth OUTSIDE of Hip Hop music. Jay-Z, 50 Cent, even Russell Simmons (made most his wealth from the hostile takeover of Def Jam). Whereas the big 3 make their profits FROM actually SELLING HIP HOP MUSIC and Culture as a primary source of income not as a by-product.

Let me clear this up.

Chingy, Cassidy, Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne  are saying stop the violence as a political move against people like Bill Cosby  Al Sharpton, Ben Chavis etc. to get off their backs.

I've got one simple question for these artists: From now on are you going to not make rap that talks not just about observing violence (which is acceptable) but are you not going to do raps about doing violence or threatening to do violence or bragging about having a gun?

You, the artists have choosen to make a verbal statement about violence for the moment because it is assumed that that has some influence. So if verbal statements have some influence are you going to make any commitments about the verbal statements you make in your music in the future?

let me predict the answer in advance: No
all bullshit hip-hopcracy

Busta Ryhmes what a joke, all bugged out on steroids tryin to be like 50, on the catch up trying to get catch some petty charges to build up his street cred, how many cases this guy got about four? assault etc.

hicks into nascar want to be dale earnhardt jr.

drunks watching ufc fight at the bar.

kids into goth dress like vampires.

kids into michael jackson get molested.

and kids into hiphop want to be 50 cent....

its no secret that our choice of entertainment defines us. it is more influential then our parents and schools combined. our government and communities should take a stand and make sure this poison doesn't reach the highly impressionable youth. freedom of speech is valuable but life is priceless.

I would have loved to hear people like Mos, Def, Talib, Lupe, KRS and others on this. At the same time the artists who did this are the ones that are constantly in the news and put in the lime light by their companys and hopefully, for the youth who follow these guys, will sit back and evaluate their actions in life.

They can write whatever they want when it comes to songs. These days HipHo does not really reflect what is going on in the streets, and if it does, it only affect a few... But to think these cats do what they rap, is foolish thinking.... If they moving weight, killin, pimping, they would have no time for a record deal... You don't get discovered on the corner while hustling/trappin, you gotta shop that shit around to be heard, so that street grind is really bouncing from club to club.... Remember, none of these dudes is out there slingin shit right now... Some of them cannot hold down a corner anymore if they ever did....

Busta I remember the syphas at Smith St Park in Uniondale,, it was all fun then.....

So no matter how you feel about their music, pay attention to what they are saying here. It needs to be said by those that are listend to. But action is louder than words, so these dudes need to carry this message with them everywhere they go and show......

Stop the violence and stupidity.....

All of yall talking this "yeah but they still rap about violence" sound just like Oprah, Cosby, Sharpton and everyone else REFUSING to acknowledge when rappers attempt to do anything good. I bet if Quintin Tarentino was a part of a "Stop The Violence" campaign, ya'll wouldn't have nothing to say.

Everyone calling the rappers hypocrites:

obviously these are the ones that need to be doing the most damage control. Every1 acts like when hip hop needs some positivity that Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and LB are supposed to jump in a phone booth and change clothes.

They have been doing the positive thing their entire careers. The ones that get the negative light are the ones that SHOULD be doing the psa, just to counteract all the bad press.

LB, Common, Kweli etc. fans aren't really the ones that need to be reached with this message. So a PSA from Mos Def isn't going to reach Fat Joe's violent fanbase (not meant to insult Joe's fanbase-Im a fan myself). Fat Joe has to do it himself. That doesn't make him hypocritical, that makes him layered. Every human has at some point contradicted themself, rappers are no exception. Give 'em a break.

And give them some kind of credit for trying.

Old school gansta mcs made agnsta songs and put in sublim messages to keep me out the game and track 456 are gangsta but 9 and 10 were positive. MC's nowaday dont know how to "trick" people. Cause what i came up on the gangstas told me not to ssell drugs, respect woman, be a father toyour child, be pro black, dont join gangs and dont use drugs. Thats it? just a PSA? c'mon man? The original Self destruction was so ill that when you learned the words you were actually reciting a message. Even if you wasnt "positive" the song was still hot.
This PSA shit aint gonna cut it, sorry.
Back in those days drugs was the new phenomenon in every other hood in america. It was all just getting started per say.
My generation HAD to say something, we HAD too, it really was self destruction going on.
Its just not as drastic now like it used to be.
Nothing seems to move us anymore.
Besides hip hop beef and all this internet garbage WE as a people dont stand up for shit no more. We dont HAVE to.
Niggas got blogs to talk for hours now without having to show & prove nothing.
Wayne and cassidy took it a little too far for me with the imagery, almost like they were tryin to self promote their image, which isnt what stop the violence is.
If memory serves me correct lil wayne shot himself playin with a gun or some stupid shit and cassidy aint even in the hood like that to be talkin so tough.
We are forever gonna be in a lose/lose situation here.
Niggas almost have to talk wreckless about the streets on record to get your attention, so then they REALLY need to be in the streets basically risking their freedom for you to believe them(or not) and support them, only for us to turn around and call them stupid when they get caught up for trying to live up to their image. What the fuck is that? really?
Look at TI. he needs all them guns for what? just to say he really has them? some niggas was acting proud about the shit tryin to call out the guns to prove their gun knowledge or something...
I mean why has hip hop become such a fuckin circus?
I tell you like this, in the late 80's early 90's the style was afrocentric. period. if you didnt have an X hat or skullie you was on the outside lookin in, just what it was.
Some niggas rode the trend of course, others lived by it and still do, but alot of cats got up on Malcom during that time simply cause it was a trend. Trends go a long way, good or bad.
Black awareness was the IN THING, before the west coast gangst rap shit popped off. And we all know violence sells big. period. And we all know the blood & crip trend that spawned nation wide afterwards...
If the artist make awreness a trend, the people will follow, the corporations will follow then in turn the money will follow.
Its just all too risky to do. And it is.
Would you follow suit or rebel as a fan?
And Being that black america doesnt buy the majority of our own music, who are we talkin too anyway? white kids?
Their safe in their own america.
They get to pick & choose..." hummm the new common song or the new shake your butt song"...guess what their gonna pick every single time...
Their not in the hood, none of this hood shit even relates to them but we keep going on & on about it.
We are teaching them how to be 'hood' in the end, exploiting, and its killing their parents, not each other.
they just wanna be entertained and copy off us just like it has been for the last 500 years. what else is new.
So after all the shallow stop the violence talk from all these artist, your still gonna get that good ol top 40 pop rap from these niggas. what do you expect?
Go back and look at that KRS video when he's talkin about Kanye and 50, and just look at the disbelief on his face when discussing ringtone rap etc. that says it all, look at what hip hop has become. Can you blame niggas like him for straddling the fence?
its such a fuckin undefendable joke that its pathetic, it aint all our fault, true, but its sooo pathetic and the fans dont make it any easier. We are all to blame here and half ass PSA's dont excuse anything. This will be forgotten, yet again, in another week or so or until the next big rumor hits...

You said"  "Everyone calling the rappers hypocrites:
....obviously these are the ones that need to be doing the most damage control"

-usually when the term "damage control" is used it's meant to mean cover up shit

You said: "Mos Def isn't going to reach Fat Joe's violent fanbase (not meant to insult Joe's fanbase-Im a fan myself). Fat Joe has to do it himself. That doesn't make him hypocritical, that makes him layered. Every human has at some point contradicted themself, rappers are no exception

-It's true Mos Def is not going to reach Fat Joe's fan base but to say that Fat Joe "at some point contradicted himself" doesn't seem accurate. It's not "at some point" It's his entire gangsta image, Joey Crack and he constantly talks about doing violence in his music. So please don't try to make it like it's "at some point" like he made some little itty bitty mistake way back when.

Let me ask you a question. What is the definition of hyopcrite? You seem to act like there's no such thing in the world.

What sense does it make if fat Joe is gonna do a PSA for five minutes and then write tons of songs portraying how he's the baddest thug out. I'll tell you what I think. I think that confuses people for him to then do a PSA or one song about Stop The Violence (haven't even gotten a song yet) and when we figure out what's going on they see it as a thick layer of hypocritical bullshit.
Let me ask you a question. What is your definition of hyopcrite? You seem to act like there's no such thing in this world.

All you have to do is go to Fat Joe's recent lyrics off his last album in 2006 to see we're not talkin about "at one point" it's many points, in fact the guys whole image. I don't see an layers there. And if he does one "stop the violence" song how does that balance out 14 other gangster songs on an album?

For example from the 2006 album "Me Myself and I" the very first song:

"Pendemic"

We getting poppin', them hammers go

I'm way over your head, you like cre-a-tiv-ity
I'm a GANGSTA RAPPER, Lord forgive the shit I'm saying
But you'd be surprised where my music is playing
That's what they want to hear

I keep gunning for 'em, they keep running from me

"The Profit"

"The streets love me
See they named me coca
The Puerto Rican version of La Costra Nostra"....
I hope you know them Bentley doors not chopper proof
And they go Br R-RR Ta Tat
Just like them bullets dancin'

“Breathe and Stop”

“All my niggaz throw your Dubs up
If you ain't from the west side put your guns up

Sell coke to Pablo

“Think About it”

New York
Yeah we G'ed up

Ice pick change your life with one strife man
Too much rappin and we don't rat
We do it for them trap stars serving them packs
And e'er  nigga know from way back to Houston

I'll yap that Nigga
Gun clap that Nigga
Oh yeah I spit that shit
MOTIVATE YOUNG BUCKS HOW TO FLIP BRICKS”

How are you gonna take all these thug rappers and pretend they Martin Luther King. You can't run a non violent movement
with these dudes. You think they are gonna stay on track?
Is this all about selling a new part 2 collabo? This whole things the biggest joke I ever heard. Thugs in Philly, Newark, New York are gonna be laughing when that shit comes out (if it does).
How's it make sense to put Lil Wayne out there, he's up on gun charges. Busta's up for assault and three other cases. Actions speak louder than words. Damn that's stupid to pick guys who might even about to do a bid. Next thing ya know T.I. gonna be portrayed as Mahatma Ghandi.
Yo wanna go the Malcom X route? That's not happening either. They got a lot of rules in the N.O.I. So you can't be livin no gangsta rap lifestyle.

POLL QUESTION:

If you look at the firts Stop The Violence movement (was it a movement or just a song?) The song Self Destruction had
KRS-One, Stetsasonic, Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Just-Ice,
Doug E. Fresh, Heavy D, Public Enemy, Ms. Melodie and D-Nice.
Now you can see that he's got a different type of artist now. Now some suggest that the type of artists he got now is more hardcore and they can better reach the hard head street dudes.
Thing is it's hard to believe that the artists he got now are going to stick with the program when it comes to their new music matching this stop the violence concept. Lil Wayne already got a single out with Fat Joe called Crack House and another one called Trouble where he says:
"kill for my bread, kill for my Gs kill for my cream....keep shootin till I burn my sleeves"
plus dude is up on gun charges.
But anyway some people think that artists like this is the one's that can reach the hardbodys on the street.
That remains to be seen.

But anyway here's my poll question: Is KRS using knucklehead rappers for the Stop The Violence Movement part 2 because he's trying to reach the street or is it because he no longer has the credibilty to get artists like Chuck D, Kanye West,Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Q-Tip, Little Brother, the Roots, Wise Intelligent, Rhymefest etc. etc. ???

***************************************************

Now some of yall might be sayin at least he's doin something.
But is this doing something or is this a circus?

this is cool and all but this is not tha first time they have tried to make peace but they always lose sight of the matter. some artist just do this in hopes of getting respect from people. if they are really serious, they would think before they rap.

i aint even listen to the song, and i don't want to! i got mad love and respect for KRS and Busta because they been in tha game since what the early 80's and they still know how ta rip it lyrically. And i'm even a fan of Cassidy because his word play is sick!
BUT WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO IS THAT IF UR GONNA GET A BUNCH OF RAPPERS TO GET ON A TRACK OR MAKE A STATEMENT ABOUT "STOPPING VIOLENCE" THEN DON'T GET A BUNCH OF "VINYL ACTORS" THAT COULDN'T COME UP WITH A SOLUTION EVEN IF THEY REALLY WANTED TO.
#1 THEY COULDN'T DO IT BECAUSE THESE RAPPERS TODAY, (AND BY "TODAY I MEAN THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN AROUND ONLY FOR THE PAST 4-5 YEARS OR SO), THEY HAVE NO IMPORTANT TOPICS THAT REALLY MATTER IN THEIR LYRICS. YOU CAN ONLY TALK ABOUT RIMS, CHICKS, GANG BANGING, AND MONEY SO MUCH UNTIL IT GET PLAYED OUT AND IT AINT EVEN SOMETHING THATS A DECENT MESSAGE TO THE YOUTH.

#2 SINCE THE WORLD THAT WE LIVE IN IS ONE OF LOWERED STANDARDS, LOST MORALS, AN EXTEME DESENSITIZATION FOR THE NEW GENERATIONS OF THE UNITED STATES' POPULATION AS A WHOLE...THE MUSIC INDUSTRY KNOWS THAT REGARDLESS OF CONTENT, IF THE MUSIC IS SELLING THEN WHY PUT OUT OR SUPPORT SOMETHING THAT IS COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE TO MAKING MONEY. JUST THE SAME WHY WOULD ANY "RAPPER TODAY" ACTUALLY WANT TO SPEAK OUT ABOUT SOMETHING THAT WOULDN'T SELL..."JUST ABOUT EVERY ARTIST OUT NOW IS JUST ABOUT GETTING PAID AND NOT ABOUT THE LOVE OF THE MUSIC AND RESPECT FOR THE PEOPLE THE MUSIC IS AFFECTING"

WE NEED TO BE MORE CONSCIOUS AS A WHOLE AND HELP OTHERS IN NEED, (ESPECIALLY OUR YOUTH WHICH ARE LEAD DOWN THE WRONG PATH SO EASILY BLINDED BY THIS MATERIAL DOMINATED WORLD...THINGS LIKE PLATINUM AND DIAMOND CHAINS, (DEGRADING) WOMEN, AND SELLING DRUGS IS THE DEVIIL HARD AT WORK. IF WE DON'T SET AN EXAMPLE FOR OUR YOUTH NOW THEN THEY AND FUTURE GENERATIONS WILL HAVE NO HOPE FOR A BETTER FUTURE!

PEOPLE LIKE COMMON, TALIB KWELI, MOS DEF, PHAROAH MONCHE, KARDINAL OFFISHALL, THE ROOTS, LUPE FIASCO, KRS-ONE, DEAD PREZ, COCOA BROVAS, PETE ROCK, BRAND-NUBIANS, HEAVY D, RAKIM, BIG DADDY KANE, AND DE LA SOUL AMONG MANY OTHER REAL EMCEES ARE THE PAST AND PRESENT GENERATIONS OF SOLDIERS FOR OUR THE GOOD FIGHT, (TO BETTER HUMANITY).
REAL HIP-HOP IS BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE, REAL HIP-HOP IS A FEEL GOOD MUSIC, AND REAL HIP-HOP IS ABOUT LIVING A DECENT LIFE, WHICH THE MORE UNFORTUNATE PEOPLE IN SOCIETY, (SUCH AS MINORITIES LIKE MYSELF), ARE TRYING TO REACH FOR NOT ONLY THEMSELVES BUT FOR FUTURE GENENERATIONS TO COME...REAL HIP-HOP IS NOT ABOUT POPPIN GUNS, SELLIN DRUGS, SLEEPIN WITH THE MOST WOMEN, AND ANY OTHER GET-RICH QUICK SCHEMES THAT LEAD TO ALMOST CERTAIN DEATH !!!
I MAY BE CRITISIZED LIKE SO MANY THESE "REAL HIP-HOP EMCEES" AND UNSUNG ACTIVIST HEROES OF OUR TIME BUT U KNOW WHAT...
..."WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE ARE YOU GIVING TO THE SEEDS OF OUR FUTURE?"
"WHAT IS YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO HUMANITY?"

I'M NO BETTER THAN THE NEXT MAN, BUT WHATS WRONG WITH TRYING TA BE A BETTER HUMAN BEING IN GENERAL?
