A variety of popular rappers have come under attack in Chicago, where a Southside church has erected twenty billboards throughout the city, denouncing rappers they claim "demean women and perpetuate violence."

The billboards were placed by the Faith Community of Saint Sabina church and urges community members to "stop listening to trash."

Snoop Dogg, Fat Joe, Lil Wayne, Nelly, 50 Cent & G-Unit, Ludacris, Chicago native Twista and "all negative rappers" are among the ten rappers targeted on the billboards, a spokesman for Saint Sabina told AllHipHop.com today (June 19).

"If we are going to end the violence and the disrespect of women, we must fight every form of negativity, including the music industry," Rev. Michael Pfleger said of the campaign in a statement.

Rev. Pfleger and Saint Sabina have spoken out against a number of issues in the past, including racism, the retail sale of drug paraphernalia and grain alcohol and the rise of alcohol and tobacco billboards in the African-American community.

There are currently 10 billboards placed around Chicago:

87th & Vincennes 79th & Normal

79th & Ada 74th & Racine

79th & Ashland Halsted & Garfield

103rd & Wallace 79th & Western

119th & Wallace 107th & Michigan

115th & Forest 63rd & Wood

14th & Kedzie Keeler & Roosevelt

Kedvale & Ogden Fillmore & California

a church should be saving souls instead of wasting time talkin to people about rap....how about stopping alcoholism, and other problems people face on a daily basis, no one is dying because Snoop Dogg or Twista say the word bitch. if they directed their energy to something more useful, they would be much more effective

Billyocean, you are completely on point. A church has waaay too many pressing issues to deal with to spend their energy taking billboards out about rappers. The worse part about it is that by pointing out all of the most popular rappers in the way they have, they are alienating the youth who they need to be reaching out to. The kids are the ones who can help change the outlook is our communities if given the right guidance, etc, but you have to come to them where they are. If the first thing you say to them is "Stop listening to this trash you are listening to!", the next thing you say to them won't even be heard. The people who will look at those billboards and agree with what they say aint listening to Snoop, Nelly, etc anyway, so its just another case of PREACHING TO THE CHOIR!

I am from the GO, Chicago. Born and raised. The location of the billboard I have been to those areas before. What they need to do work on helping the community. In the those areas there is not one Black Own Business. Do you know how much a billboard cost. They could have put that money together and open up a store or a center. To show the young community that we can make it on our own. They don't need to be attacking artist, they should be attacking themselves. They need to be addressing more pressing matters, which they are afraid to do, like AIDS in the black community. They never speak about that in the church. Education, Homosexuality, etc. The real problems, instead of rap music. Again rap is a scapegoat!

It is more then likely that mainstream rap does perpetuate violence and encourage poor treatment of women but putting up billboards wont change anything.  When people get sick of hearing about drugs, dubs, and fake thug's the problem will solve itself.  Real hip-hop will rise again....someday.

There is a big difference between rappers saying bitches and ho's and Don Imus callin' the Rutgers womans basketball team nappy headed ho's. First of all the racial implications that are in it. Truth is some girls are bitches and ho's and that needs to be talked about. There are real woman out there but there are also girls who will get with a guy based on thier financial status. If you don't apply in the ho collum then don't be offended by what a rapper says cuz they ain't talkin' to you. If you do fall in that catagory then you should figure out how to change the way you are instead of blaming everyone else. I ain't tell you to suck that dick.

I love how churches try to be "cool" and up on what they deem needs to be changed. Seriously how popular are any of the rappers on these billboards. Now if the Chicago Board of Education had posters up of Mimms, R Kelly, T-pain, and any artist with the words "Lil'" or "Young" before them and wrote the words LET'S STOP THE IGNORANCE BEFORE WE ALL BECOME A BUNCH OF DUMB NIGGAS then I'd be moved to do something. But until then " Let me buy you a drank, with yo lip gloss, doin' the shoulder lean, chain hangin low, cause this is why you hot" until I die.

These same preachers & self righteous mofo's got family, congragation members, and who knows that fall into the bitch/hoe catagory. Why attack these blk men for speaking on what goes on in the hood everyday? We gotta stop identifying the problem & work on solutions. Attacking these artist art/music is simply not the solution. They do have a responsibility 2 "Keep It Real" & I believe all the artist they're targeting speak on real life situations & characters. Well I think what they are doing by all means has good intentions (hopefully). But "realistically'' what they are doing will have no effect in the community. And to be real once again, Im no gangsta or preacher none of the above just average dude. But you cant always or neccessarily came at those rappers like that for what they say. Just like in church people testify about what theyve been through or are going through. And people express theirselves. Its the same thing these rappers are doing.. Just in their own way. They live and have lived a different lifestyle so thats what they talk about. its what they do and how they earn their living. If anything we should be glad that they just make music and dont actually promote the drama and violence. As far as that (violence and negativity)  stopping in music, it like and other trend and fad, it will eventually fade out and classic hip hop once re occur. And if any female or any person feels offended, you should do some self examination. Bitch only applies to the ones who are bitches and the same with hoes etc...if it dont pertain to you then dont worry about it. Im sure when ther say bitch they aint calling their own mothers and sisters that. Onoy if it applies to you..i would say more..but it aint worth it

I can almost guarantee that these rappers on this "so called billboard" their putting around town, have most likely done more positive and constructive deeds around the community than this pastor. I don't agree with everything these rappers are speaking on, but lets face it you attacking the wrong group of people. If you going to attack these people don't attack them just because some idiot (Don Imus) gets on the radio and disrespects and shows his ignorance towards storng educated black women. Get a sense of direction. I mean really do these people think the solution to the problem would be to get rid of all the "so called" negative rapper and there would stop being bitches and ho and a decrease vioence. Give me a break dude!!!! The Problem is bigger that.

Pure ignorance people!!  Drinking is a problem and it is in HIP HOP!!  How many songs are tied into alcohol... or alcohol related??  Just about every song now sponsers a new liquor, beer or expensive champagne!!  The base of the problem is in Hip Hop lately.  Rappers today spen too much time glorifying the wrong things... Weed, alcohol, drug trafficing and so forth.  Where are the real issues in this world.  Someone has got to step up and take responsibilty for the situations going on.  U may not have started it, but seeing how today's youth look for icons... and weed, sex and alcohol are tied together, why not follow their lead!  Wake up People!!

INFORMING the HIP-HOP COMMUNITY

An Intelligent Query: Can I get JUST ONE?

Can I get just ONE billboard (not 10) paid for by the black church of Southside Chicago that criticizes BUSH and the American Establishment for COMMITTING, not just perpetuating, violence against ALL the human families of the earth?

Can I get just ONE billboard (not 9) paid for by the black church of Southside Chicago that criticizes the racially biased "drug war" incarcerates African American youth at much higher rates than their white counterparts and gives them more time for committing the same crimes?

Can I get just ONE billboard (not 8) paid for by the black church of Southside Chicago that criticizes the WEALTHY white-male supremacist who run the "music industry" and controls the propagation of destructive images? Targeting rappers is NOT targeting the "music industry!" Rappers are laborers in the industry of music; they manufacture the products that their company demands of them. Rappers are like models in a cigarette advertisement that most often don't even smoke cigarettes, but for want of work, they'll promote the harmful tobacco products!

Can I get just ONE billboard (not 7) paid for by the black church of Southside Chicago that criticizes black "pastors" who sell their flock to politicians who DO NOT represent the interest of the Black Community?

Can I get just ONE billboard (not 6) paid for by the black church of Southside Chicago that criticizes the CIA/Reagan-Bush administrations deliberate flooding of the Black Community with cocaine from Central/South America to finance a covert war in Nicaragua?

Can I get just ONE billboard (not 5) paid for by the black church of Southside Chicago that demands reparations for this Genocidal crime against humanity?

Can I get just ONE billboard (not 4) paid for by the black church of Southside Chicago that criticizes the inadequate education in our communities that has left a substantial amount of black youth unable to read on a fourth grade level after 12 years of school. Inefficient administrators and superintendents. Not to mention horrible teachers who can not be fired?

Can I get just ONE billboard (not 3) paid for by the black church of Southside Chicago that criticizes Big Time black media moguls like Kathy Hughes, Bob Johnson, and the black woman who presides as president of BET for their participation in the dissemination, propagation and perpetuation of negative images that "degrade women" and "perpetuate violence."

Can I get just ONE billboard (not 2) paid for by the black church of Southside Chicago that criticizes the lack of financial transparency in the black churches in America who fleece their poor urban and middle-class black families of tithes and offerings that never find their way back into the community to aid the very people the church is set up to support?

Can I get just ONE billboard (just 1) paid for by the black church of Southside Chicago that criticizes the rich white-male supremacist patriarchy in which we are embedded for its shaping and maintaining of anti-black behavior in all of its life sustaining institutions be they private or public?

JUST ONE!

Just a thought:

Maybe if people were not filling themselves on the negative themes found in much of Hip-Hop, then they would be inspiried to go out and do something positive.  Maybe if the music was empowering people to do positive things like get an education, respect your woman, love yourself instead of things like smokin weed, F'ing hoes, and killing ni**as, then the average guy on the block will WANT to change his/her life.

You are what you eat.  If you feed yourself with negativity then that is what you will have inside of you and that is what is going to come out.  Let's be real, people idolize these stars and want to be like them, and if all they talking about is foolishness and that is the image they promote "keepin it real," then that is what people are going to emulate.  Period.  You are fooling yourself if you think that these personas dont have anything to do with why our kids  and they parents and older cousins are walking around with knee length white tees, baggy jeans, and a fresh pair of Ones...

Im not saying that its all on Hip-Hop, its not.  But the music does play a part and we have to acknowledge that.  Plus these rappers are not "keeping it real" cuz most of these guys havent really been on a corner in YEARS.  I can see the first album, maybe even the second being like that, but almost 15 years later, Snoop is not in Long Beach so he can talk about something else.  In his case if he wants us to focus on his positive acts, then his next single should be titled "Football Father."  Give that the ol promotional push and then see how mainstream America perceives him then...

That's keeping it real!

The church is the most hypocritical establishment in the american culture, its full of Drug users, sexual deviants, pedifiles and more...

1st of all, the church is no more hypocritical than many of these artist who for example talking about how they'll kill somebody or about how hardcore of a life they are currently living, meanwhile they are on vacation on a yacht somewhere or living in a MTV crib.  Then u got the ones who on an album say they drink this or smoke that  all day and in real life they dont smoke or drink at all...i.e 50.  But then on the other hand u got cats who really are living what they are talking about.  So dont be so quick to call an whole establishment hypocritical when you havent been to every church in the world, when u do visit every one and see that every one is full of hypocrites then i'll respect that statement.

Secondly the purpose of the church is to help the Drug users, sexual deviants, pedifiles and etc to get delivered from those things and to see their souls saved.  They are the people who will have the greatest testimonies.  Most of the most famous names in the bible, were ex murders, drunks, sexual deviants and so on so that God can show you it's not about one's past but his future.  Least those people you named are going to church in an effort to deal with these issues, while you just sit back talk from the outside.

And a few other people made mention that the "church" just wants money or something to that extent. The drug dealer just wants your money, the electric company just wants ur money, the liquor store just wants your money, the casino just wants your money and you'll gladly give it to them without hesitation.  A "real" church doesnt want your money just for the sake of taking your money.  If a person is really a child of God like they say, they should be more than willing to give your tithe and offering because you the bible says that God loves a cheerful giver and they understand the principal or sowing and reaping.    In addition, the more money a "real" church has the means the more then can help out in the community.  Such as giving students scholarships, providing food and clothing needs for the needy, building community centers that provide kids a safe environment to do homework or hang out and the list goes on.

So even though i dont feel that Rap or hip-hop should be the scapegoat for all the negatives in society I disagree with people being upset about what this church is doing.  I never been there and dont know what they are about, but at least they took a stand on something the feel strongly about.  If real recognize real let them be.  Cuz y some of u say rap and hip hop doesnt have infuence on people, thats cuz it doesnt infuence you one way or the other.  But imagine yourself, in as a kid who idolizes Juelz and listens to his song "kill em" all day everyday.  When that kid gets put into a situation where something or someone pushes him to that limit...chance's are he's gonna kill em.
